  • Here's an older Sigma lens with a nice maximum aperture and close-focusing ability - I was thinking of buying one a few years ago. Is it any good at all?

    I bought this lens as my first wide angle full frame lens - it was cheap and I wanted a fast prime. I ended liking it quite a bit for low light events.
    -The AF was slow but reliably locked on due to iris opening to f1.8.
    -The corner weakness was not a bother for shooting people at events.
    -The macro ability meant a lot of fun quirky close ups.
    One thing I really find this lens great for too is pets like cats and dogs. Macro and wide angle is really cute and fun.
    I since bought a 24A and found that while the shaper picture is great, the bokeh is a bit distracting and the min focal distance bonus is sorely missed. I went and sold again and switch to a Canon 28mm f2.8 IS for the (fairly specific) purposes I use these lenses for.

    Great review Chris. Very interesting seeing how this 'old' lens performs. Thanks for going into so much detail.

    The bokeh is wonderful with it as the video shows. And while it can focus so closely, this lens definitely has something to play with. I personally adore taking close-ups with wide angle lens. It's really interesting. I have canon 35 f2 is, it's also semi-macro lens. So I think this sigma isn't worthless, it has it's own peculiarity.

    The blue glare at f/1.8 is in the shots.. I think it's just a design flaw of this lens

  • @ErikSWE
    @ErikSWE 8 років тому +1

    I've never experienced that blue haze with an EX lens, that first APS-C-shot was truly horrendous. Unless you really need a fast lens I would highly recommend the Sigma 15-30 f/3.5-4.5 EX-lens to cover most of these primes (I still prefer primes to zooms but at about $150 this zoom truly screams value).

    I had the chance to buy the 28mm 1.8 macro version for 150$. The images are a bit sharper than this 24mm version at 1.8, but still rather soft. Nevertheless, I'm quite happy with the lens considering the price I've paid, since it gets me some unique shots and the macro ability is quite nice too. And for video the lens is awesome :)

    Not sure why, but mine can use AF with the ring either up or down, always thaught that pull switch was for focus distance limiting for easier focusing during non-macro use

  • @DynamixWarePro
    @DynamixWarePro 8 років тому

    I have never liked the old way Sigma lenses had that focus ring. I have the Sigma 105mm EX DG macro which I got in 2008, and I have had it repaired about 3 times since, due to the autofocus stopping working correctly. The focus would often start to autofocus then it would stop before the subject was in focus, or it focused really slowly and didn't focus clearly on the subject. If I ever have the money, might replace it for the newer one or the Canon 100mm L Macro lens.

I want send an email with photos for comparision to anorher owner. I think the scratches can make more lateral chromatic distortion in hight contrast situación but im no shure. Being a newcomer to the SLR-world, my first hand experience with Sigma and Tamron comes after they put out some amazing gear. I have heard about Sigma and Tamron making poor gear in the past, which is why so many were surprised and impressed by them recently. Now I can see what people had to contend with... Yikes.

      The Sigma Art series is amazing. Their professional long macro lenses (150mm, 180mm f2.8 APO OS) are also fantastic.

      I've never seen anyone demonstrate such terms in a meaningful, tangible way. Could you demonstrate the differences between the Art lenses and comparable lenses of the same focal lengths that reveal the weaknesses you have in mind? Let's take the 50mm, for example.
      Sorry for the edits. I just wanted to be clear.

      As far as I know microcontrast just means contrast. I haven't noticed any cyan tint in my 35mm. The first sigma image could be a picture with lots of atmospheric haze for all we know (in fact, I'd be willing to bet that it is). I don't see a particular 3D effect in the black/white picture you showed me, which looks overly processed for contrast. We cannot look at images that are not shot side-by-side when comparing IQ, since there is so much that changes in different conditions. Crisp daylight gives different sharpness than overcast, the white-balance may be off, atmospheric haze affects the IQ, post processing may have been used, focus may have been missed, different lenses are superior at different f-stops, etc.
      That apple picture is just ridiculous. No review I've seen of the Sigma 50mm shows a cyan cast, let alone one that is so strong. Looks like post processing to me. My 35mm never gives results like that. In fact, I've never used a lens which affects WB so drastically.
      One detriment of the 35mm sigma art lens is the heavy vignetting. But, that can easily be fixed in post, unless the effect is attractive in a particular shot.
      In my experience, the best way to test glass is to slap a macro tube or two on it and see how it fares. The 35 Art does really, really well with macro tubes.
      I'm a scientist by education and at heart, so I go where the evidence points. I wouldn't mind if a lens is better than the Sigma (because reality doesn't care if I like or dislike it). But, I'm not convinced you have shown me representative or fair comparisons.
      Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the effort you went to in order to show me pictures.

      I must apologise again for all the edits I made in the response I just wrote. Hope you haven't read the post before now. I'm trying to be clear, and I don't wish for misunderstandings to occur, like how I could come off as being aggressive or antagonising. That is not my intent. I'm totally open minded about being wrong if I am (or at least I like to think so). I don't mix feelings in with the performance of lenses or cameras. As I see it, it's in our best interest to scrutinise the products they make us pay lots of money for.

      Yeah, there are many people who get emotionally invested in their gear, and can't handle different opinions. I'm not totally immune myself, of course. I adore my 35mm. But, I'm not threatened by other opinions, as some seem to be.
      I will say that the Sigma has 9 elements, which is the same number as the Zeiss 35mm T* F2 Distagon you mentioned (I thought I would look it up: photographylife.com/reviews/zeiss-distagon-35mm-f2-zf2 ). So, if glass really coloured the images so drastically, the Zeiss should fare no better in that regard.
      I've heard the definition of microcontrast before, but I have yet to see someone show me two similar pictures were one had good general contrast but poor microcontrast, and the other with both good contrast and good microcontrast. And, some claim microcontrast is an invented term made by people who wish to justify expensive gear. I haven't looked much into it, since I generally need and want auto focus. The microcontrast discussions tend to stay with the really expensive MF only lenses. So, until further notice, I just go with "contrast".
      I don't like checking lens characteristics by looking at flickr pics. There's no telling what they've done with the pics. Something I've noticed is that many pics are gloomy because people don't bother checking the histogram to see if their subject is properly exposed. So, how to tell a poorly exposed image from native lens gloominess, I don't know.
      What I meant by testing with macro tubes is the sharpness. Macro tubes stretch the capabilities of the glass to render sharp images. My Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC for example does not perform amazingly well with macro tubes. As a sidenote though, the VC makes it good for macro video work.
      I've looked at some video reviews of the Art series, and none of them mention cyan tint. Have you seen one?

    Hi Chris, I really liked your video, but I thought of giving a shot and bought the similar lens for Nikon. All I can see in your video is, the lens AF was not tuned, which resulted in soft (at 1.8 clearly it's out of focus) images. decreasing aperture helped the sharpness, but still out of focus.
    On my D7200, I had to tune +15.0 to make it properly focus. And definitely no CA with Nikon system

    Hey man, I am looking at buying a reasonably priced ultra wide for my 5D mark iii. I have seen the Sigma 12-24 - it caught my eye because its cheap and unbelievably wide. However, there are no reviews that show its performance in a controlled way (like your reviews). Is there any chance you could have a look at it and make one of your awesome reviews? Cheers!
