Samyang XP 14mm f/2.4 lens review with samples (Full-frame & APS-C)

- Here we have another of Samyang's new premium lenses: a 14mm lens for full-frame cameras, with a very wide aperture of f/2.4 (it reports as f/2.5 on your camera, but that's just a limitation of the camera's firmware). It's already been hyped up to be one of the sharpest ultra wide angle lenses ever made - well, we'll be the judge of that!

Your reviews are simply the best 😊😊
Holy Poop. What a winner. Sharp corner to corner with no CA wide open? I almost never see that in your charts! No coma, smooth bokeh, etc, just wow. Screw autofocus, who needs it.
you deserve way more views and subs.
I really love your reviews Chris! It's always a pleasant moment when I realize a new one is ready for viewing. :)
This lens seems like it could be really nice for low light glidecam use on my 80D if it was just a little bit wider... I rarely like to shoot as tight as 14mm with my Sigma 10-20 f/3.5. Maybe it's time for some more testing at 14mm to see how the field of view works out.
Wow, that is a crazy good lens. I've never seen such a good coma performance and it is even better than my Sigma 18-35 which is a heck of a lens but not as low on chromatic abberation and coma. Great review!
Is it worth the price to upgrade from a Samyang 14mm F2.8?
I'd like to know the answer to this question as well.
It depends how much you're going to use it I guess. Wideangle lenses are generally not used a lot. To me the F2.8 version's price is just right and I am overall very pleased with the results. This new one though has better superb sharpness and is like $1100 dollars cheaper than the Canon 14mm F2.8.
Hugo França Can you tell me what is the better lens? Thank you.
I owned the cheaper f/2.8 and sold it. That lens did not resolve well on my A7r3 and the images were not tack sharp. At 3 times the price of the cheaper counterpart, this lens seems a worthy option as my next astro lens, even if i need to use an MC-11 adaptor on my Sony.
you should become an amazon associate. I would like to support you by buying my gear with your link. Cheers from Canada.
Another good review! simply the Best reviewer of UA-cam!!!
Aww.. I was most impressed by the bunny. :3
Dear Chris,,
I would be most obliged if you could tell me if the Samyang 14mm AF 2.8 would be appropriate with a camera body yielding 50 megapixels plus? i.e. would the resolution be comparable to the 14mm XP?
Yours faithfully,
A. Pearson.
The XP version will be noticeably sharper
Thank you for a great review. You're very thorough as always. This may be a great lens, but it kills me that Samyang wouldn't include a depth of field scale. It's an absolute must for a wide angle lens, especially a manual focusing one, where it would be useful to set the lens to a hyperfocal distance and shoot without refocusing. I wonder who was the genius who decided to exclude it?
soo... this one or venus optics 12mm f/2.8? what's your choice?
The Samyang is sharper, the Venus is wider - depends on your need as a photographer :-)
Christopher Frost Photography will take it into consideration :) Thanks for the response! Samyang is also cheaper I guess
I'm not sure it will be cheaper, this article suggests a very close value, but this is in pounds, I guess the pound is pretty weak right now though, so maybe cheaper maybe not. www.ephotozine.com/article/samyang-premium-mf-14mm-f-2-4-lens-review-30229 Also don't forget the 12mm primary selling point, the low low distortion, which, while this Samyang doesn't have super bad distortion it is certainly noticeable.
the venus optics 12mm f/2.8 has less distortion than the new samyang xp 14mm f/2.4, am I right?
It has less distortion than /any/ ultra wide-angle lens
I was sure you would be the first to review this gem. Seems like a must have glass for night photography despite the price. Very good job Christopher, your reviews have so far helped me to restart my photography without loosing money on unfortunate equipment choices. Thank you.
Your reviews are the best 👍everything you need to know, which is pretty rare on UA-cam. Keep on the good work 💪
Hey Christopher. How does this compare to the Irix Blackstone 2.4 15mm in your opinion?
I am trying to decide which one to buy for Astro photography.
If the image quality is equally good I’m inclined to go with the Irix due to the possibility of front filters, focus Lock and weather ceiling.
However, I am a bit concerned about the quality control, as there are no local store selling these brands in Denmark.
Great review as usual. I have been interested in this lens since I first heard about it as I recently added a Canon 5Ds to my DSLR lineup as well as the Sigma 20mm f1.4 for my landscape and cityscape work but was thinking of adding a super wide prime like this one. For the price point and build quality this lens really seems like a winner. By the way Christopher, was the burial stones/night photo the Pentre Ifan site in Pembrokeshire? It sure looks like it.
Yup it's in Pembs :-)
Thanks for a great review. Could you tell me where I might get hold of the test chart that you use (or similar). I particularly like the "graticlues". Thanks!
Just a small update on this lens. So I bought the lens and was very pleased. It was sharp edge to edge even at maximum aperture, the only downside was lens flaring which sometimes spans the whole image. One day my lens fell from my bag form a distance of about 10cm to the ground beneath since my zipper got damaged and I didn't zip tight. The result was that the lens was very hard to focus and the edges of the picture were blurry. I tried contacting many Samynag service centers that I found on their website but most off them either didn't respond or declined to help me. So after a long search finally found a company from England called CVP who agreed to service it. After sending them the lens and waiting for the feedback I was in shock when I received their answer. So I am from Croatia and bought the lens during my trip to the US, since there it is much cheaper than here in Europe. I paid around 600 USD for the lens New from Adorama. They asked me 800 pounds which is almost 1000 USD to fix the lens, or if I declined I had to pay 100 pounds plus shipping just to get the lens back. I mean the ticket to the US cost me about 500 USD, so I could literally go there and buy the new lens for the same price. In conclusion, if you are from Europe and are intrigued by this lens as I was, and I really liked this lens and own 3 more Samyang lenses, don't buy it. Go for Sigma, Laowa, Irix or any other brand. Samyang support is the worst I've ever come across and from this day I can say that they lost a customer.
I'm really sorry to hear that, what a shame.
Hello Christopher, please test Sigma 85mm 1.4 Art
I got this dirt cheap on Amazon used. $200. It's in mint condition.
Love your reviews! I wish I had the money to buy everything you give the thumbs up to. Thanks to your review, and the one on the 15mm irix I chose the 14mm Samyang f/2.4. I got to play with the lens during a fun engagement session on the 5D mkIV and am so pleased with the results. Had no usability issues and the pictures are nice and sharp. B&H is selling these on sale right now - I got mine just before the sale but bought a used copy for even more savings. It was open box so in mint condition. Perhaps the manual focus lenses have a high rate of return because some folks decide it's not for them...?
I have a distaste for ultra-wide lenses (especially fisheye ones), but I must say I am surprised to see how sharp this one is across the frame.
Christopher, would you mind enough to test the Zeiss Batis 85mm F1.8, as well as the entire range of Fuji X lenses, including the 90mm F2, the APO and original versions of the 56mm F1.2, the 50mm F2 WR and 23, 27 and 35 F1.2 and F2 lenses?
Thank you. 😊
Hi Chris, It looks very nice and looks very like the Zeiss 18mm f/2.8 Mjlvus. For landscape work is it worth the price to upgrade from a Samyang 14mm f/2.8?
Because of your review I have bought this lens. But my test show a different result. The centre circle until the frame is very sharp beginning at 2.4 - impressive. But all corners are extremly soft at this aperture. Only in the area around aperture 11 the corners are quite acceptable. Is it possible, that the build quality differs and I have got a bad one? So I can not use this lens for star photography at 2.4 if I have to crop the image to get sharp results. Then I can use a not so wide lens and stitch panoramas.
Does anyone have suggestions for a APS-C astrophotography lens? Because this one would be 19mm equivalent so it's only ultra wide angle on full frame cameras...
If you have a mirrorless camera then the Samyang 12mm f/2. If you have DSLR then the Samyang 16mm f/2 is very good, and people speak highly of the Tokina 14-20mm f/2, as well
Hello Brother Christopher, Can you please review the new Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM
Thanks for your great reviews. They have helped me to choose some lenses (I recently went for th e Canon ed 400mm f4 L. excellent sharpness. I agree with what you said about it in your review). Keep the good work.
About the lens reviewed here, I wonder how it compares to other uwa lenses such as the 14mm non-premium Samyang, The Irix, or even the Zeiss Distangon 15mm (although quite more expensive). Thanks again for your work.
Thank you for the best review.
I would like to know how much cost this lens? because i couldn't find it in amazing
would be nice if this lens is retested and compared to modern uwa lenses
Hi Christopher! Nice review, Do you think it's usable for video (vignetting? ) with a GH5 with Metabones XL (0,64) ? It will become a 18mm. Thanks a lot :)
It's a full-frame lens so I don't think you'll get vignetting on a Micro 4/3 camera, whatever adaptor you're using. It'll probably be very nice
Thanks Christopher for your kind answer ! :) I will choose between this Samyang or the Irix 1 or the new upcomig Sigma. My next music video is June, hope we'll have news in the meantime ^^
Hi Christopher, Will you better recommand me to go on Irix 15 or Samyang 2.4 to shoot 4K video foortage with GH5 and Metabones XL ? :)
So usefull to watch your reviews, amazing work for everyone, thanks again :)
They should both be capable of delivering the resolution needed.
Great video very informative! Could you do a comparison video of the ultra wide lenses you've reviewed? I'm sure people are now having more options when it comes to buying UW lenses and it would surely be helpful to put them all and compare side by side. Nonetheless I Love your videos! Thank you very much!
Thank you so much for your fine work, I really enjoy your reviews a lot. Any chance that you will review Samyang 10mm f/2.8 sometime ?
Hi, yes it looks very nice, do you think it is better than Sigma 20mm 1.4 art ?
5+ Laowa Venus 12/2.8 MF Zero D, Great for Architecture. Small size
5+ Laowa 15/2 for Sony FE MF Zero-D Small size
5 Samyang Rokinon XP 14/2.4 MF Sharp with too much distortion. Small size
5 Irix 11/4 ,MF F4 only
5 Irix 15/2.4 MF
5- Sigma 14/1.8 AF Too BIG, too much distortion
5- Sigma 12-24/4 Art AF Too big, too much distortion
5- Tamron 15-30/2.8 AF, Big, too much distortion
5 Canon 12-24/4 AF Expensive
5+Nikon 12-24/2.8 AF the Best / Expensive
4 Rokinon 14/2.8 MF Cheapest, too much distortion
3- Canon 20/2.8 AF Cheap / Small / Too Soft
...thanks for that...
Well, used the Nikon 14 mm f2.8 and did not see sharp corners at 2.8 like I see the samyang..
Many ultra wide lenses create more distortion at close focusing distance. I think testing the lens with far subject is better.
does anyone know where these samyang XP lenses can be bought for the north american customers? thanks
please make a review of sigma 85mm f1.4 & sigma 70-200 f2.8.
thanks.
pity no filters can be fitted. makes it pretty useless for landscape photography
Thanks again for another great review Chris.
how does the irix 15/2.4 fare when compare to this one? they are so colse in specs.
Love the review! Im still trying to find a wide angle lens for my 6D that is under 400 and cant find anything
Charlie CJ for this budget I would recommend you to take a look in vintage lenses.
Charlie CJ The 10mm 2.8 is an aps-c lens, so won't work on a Canon 6d. What about the samyang 14mm 2.8? It's a great lens and should be under 400, especially whem used...
So, which are you choose - Samyang or Laowa?
I will be making a video comparing extreme wide angle lenses sometime in the next few months
I'd find that very helpful.
Christopher can you review the 10mm xp 3.5 for ff? Ty!
hey Christopher, could you do a macro pens shootout?
hopefully those on low budgets
It looks like a light bulb.
You have the best and most classy (thanks to the piano music) reviews that are very detailed and to the point with no time wasted rambling.
is it posible that you make a comparison between milvus 15mm and milvus 18mm?
Great resource of information your videos are, thank you for all your time
I haven't tested either of those lenses I'm afraid
@@christopherfrost just because whenever you do, you do it great, the reviews are very helpfull. i am moving Towards sigma, all being second hand, rather cheap i try to find
your videos are f****** great!
Another cracking review Christopher, does this lenses fit the canon 80d ?
All Canon mount lenses made since 1987 will work on your Canon APS-C digital SLR camera, except EF-M lenses
This lens is certainly drool-worthy! The images are amazing. I'd be curious to see if that rubber focusing ring poses a problem overtime in extreme heat or for dust? Rubberized textures tend to become sticky from the oils in our skin. What do you think Christopher? Another outstanding production btw. Thank you.
Hmm don't know. I've never experienced that problem, although maybe over a /very/ long period of time there might be deterioration
Your reviews are wonderful. And your pet rabbit is adorable. So fluffy. Does your rabbit have a name?
Snuffy (I didn't name her)
Chris, thank you for your reviews. I'm looking for my first ultra wide lens, and I'm between this samyang sp 14 and irix 15. Must I invest on samyang for better quality or save some money with irix? Thank you.
That's essentially the choice you have :-)
Hello ! Nice video ! you say that we can use it with mirrorless cameras with an adaptator...but what about APSc ? It was not clear enough to me if the adaptator was just for the mirrorless or apsc too =/ Thanks !
APS-C is a sensor size. It has nothing to do with whether a lens is mirrorless or not. As for whether this lens works on an APS-C camera - watch the video, and you'll see
Hi Chris, what adapter do you recommend for using this line of Samyang´s XP lenses on a sony e-mount body in order to have aperture control, thanks and as always a great review!
I haven't tested many of them but the Sigma MC-11 is a pretty safe bet generally
Hello, Christopher. Excellent and useful video, thank you. Please answer the question. You buy lenses, or you provide their producers?
Sometimes I buy lenses, sometimes hire, sometimes borrow. I was loaned this lens by Samyang for 2 weeks for testing. I had to give it back afterwards
Awesome review Chris!
While we're at it, do you think you could review the Samyang 10mm f/2.8, if you can get your hands on it, please?
There are some videos here and there doing light reviews on it, but nothing as near and as detailed as yours, and I'd like to see more on it.
Thanks!
Agree! There is currently no high quality samyang 10mm f/2.8 review available
Wow that is some crazy super sharp lens.. O_O
Wow that is some crazy super sharp lens.. O_O
Does anyone know where I can get a canon full frame for cheap? No 5d classic, I like to use the view finder
+F. Perez ... I think you mean the live view, the 5D classic has a very capable viewfinder. 6D is the usual budget FF, though the 5DII often gets low used prices as well. Amazon used 5DIIs: www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B001G5ZTLS/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=all 6D new: www.amazon.com/Canon-20-2-Digital-Camera-3-0-Inch/dp/B009C6VADE/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1485719709&sr=1-1&keywords=6D It's also worthwhile to check Canon's own refurbished section on their site. This site tracks prices for Canon gear from various sources: www.canonpricewatch.com For instance, here they track the Canon refurbished gear: www.canonpricewatch.com/canon-refurb-stock-tracker/
zvxcvxcz thanks homie🙏
can you talk about tokina 24-70 f2.8 FX
hi,if you want to compare 14 .2.8 vs 14 2.4 which one do you prefer ? do you think extra money for new one has worth it ?
I'll be doing a big comparison video once I've tested the new Sigma 14mm f/1.8
Hi Chris, Nice review video. How is this compared with the Samyang 14mm F2.8?
A bit sharper with much less distortion and much nicer build quality
Another great review Chris and another great lens from Samyang
how would you compare this with the irix 14mm.?
The Irix 15mm? Take a look at my review of that lens to see how they compare
Hi Chris! Between those two, and considering that the Irix Blackstone is a bit cheaper, which one would you get?
Great review. I do 360º panoramic images with Canon 5DSR and the Canon 8-15mm L. Would I get sharper panoramas with this Samyang lens? thanks.
They would be straighter
hmm, and sharper? I suppose so, right? since it's a fixed focal compared to the zoom Canon 8-15. Thanks!
Those internal Church shots look stunning. I wish they made an M43 equivalent ie a 7mm of similar quality! Great review as always...
I think Olympus do one
Christopher Frost Photography thanks.
Another great review Chris thanks. I'd like to see a review of the Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM, there doesn't seem to be a decent review of this lens on youtube.
I would like to but it's such a rare lens.
Thanks for responding back, and so it is, I just check Amazon and B&H and its not available. I didn't think it was that old of a lens. Guess thats why there aren't many reviews. :)
Mitchell Hagerty It's discontinued unfortunately, but I've only read very positive reviews, very sharp. I have the older version without OS, also very nice, sharp and lightweight. Here's to hoping for a new Art version. The 50-100 1.8 is stellar I hear, but so heavy...
Chris you are great. Perfect and on time.
Any idea when this will be released in the US? I can't find it anywhere.
may be going under the name rokinon 14mm f/2.8
I am an apsc guy and have been waiting for a long time to get a sharp ultra wide angle lens. I wish samyang's 10mm was as shape as this one. 14mm is like...not so wide after all on crop. From whatever reviews and pictures I saw of the 10mm, its not a good performer. Hope you will find some time to review it.
Saket Sarupria the Tokina 11-20 2.8 is excellent
For my 7D the At-X 11-16 Pro DX is the sharpest wide angle lens. The 11-20 is not that sharp if we are really comparing them side by side. Problem with the 11-16 is high vignetting and good amount of CA. I believe there is no near perfect ultra wide angle lens for apsc in the market. I really had high hopes from samyang but their 10mm isn't that sharp.
Saket Sarupria not true mate, I just moved from the 11-16 to the 11-20, they're both very sharp, but the 11-20 is better. more useful range, less CA and better flare resistance. A recent example I took last week m.flickr.com/#/photos/129434925@N02/32090317710/
Hey Chris, Love your reviews bud! Quick question, it looks like the focus ring throw is pretty long, if I was to use it for video do you reckon there would be any issues having to reposition your hand for long focus pulls, also is the lack of IS noticeable for video? Cheers
If you had to do a very long focus pull it might be a slight issue. As for IS, there isn't a full-frame 14mm lens on the market with IS at all I'm afraid. My advise is to get a motorised gimbal and use that. I'm testing out a Zhiyun Crane at the moment and it's great (I didn't try it with this lens, though)
You can see the focus ring throw about the 2:30 mark
For video you WANT a long focus throw.
Why has it not released for Sony E yet?
Ask Samyang
f/2.4 isn't very useful. T 15-30 f/2.8 VC can absorb much more light
I think you're confused somewhere. F/2.4 is faster than f/2.8
VC
Samyang is killing it!
Compare with Zeiss 15mm f2.8 in term of image quality, what do you think?
I haven't tried the Zeiss lens. TBH, this Samyang lens's sharpness is literally perfect
@@christopherfrostbut the Zeiss takes filters and has an aperture ring
Its made in Korea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a fantastic lens! Great review again Chris
I finaly found cool music for this stuff
Excellent review Chris!
With so many ultra wide angle lenses released recently, I am really curious how they compare to each other.
I will be doing a major comparison video sometime in the next few months. :-)
Very interested in that!
yes, please, do it! :) between this one, the Laowa 15mm f4 macro, the 12mm f2.8 zero-D, and the Irix 15mm f2.4
👍
so with this lens you cant zoom in and out? I am a noob :)
That's right
great review as always .. thank you
Have you tried this lens on your sony a7RII?
Nope, afraid not
do we have focus confirmation on canon bodies?
Yup
This or irix 15?
lovely i like it
Awesome lens!
Great review!!
This, or Samyang 16mm f/2 for astro and in general on APS-C considering the price difference?
depends on what kind of astrophotography you are taking. In my own experience, if you want to shoot the milky way, 16 mm and 14 mm won't be wide enough on an aps-c.
Kai Hin Lkh Any suggestion for a Canon APS-C?
I personally opted for tokina 11-16 mm f/2.8. It will never be as sharp as the full frame lenses but it gets the job done for a fairly low price. There's also a samyang 10mm f/2.8, but according to review it is no better than the tokina so no point in sacrificing the versatility of the zoom, unless you really want that extra 1 mm. There's also the full frame Laowa 12 mm f/2.8,which should still be wide enough after the crop factor and it is sharp, but it is also quite expensive.
Thank you.
I was asking the first question mainly because I'm willing to look for a full frame body this year, so I'm looking around for good lenses that can be mounted on both APS-C and FF without sacrifice.
I just found out that the Samyang 16mm f/2 is for APS-C only, which is a pity considering that it has great build and image quality, a detachable hood, a filter thread, a pretty good wide angle focal length, is that fast, and doesn't cost too much.
On the other hand, even if the lens in this video is for FF and is this great, it doesn't have a detachable hood, and that's so bad for my regular landscape 100x100 filter set...
Choose Tokina
1st
such a waste to be testing lenses on a crappy 20mpix sensor, get an a7r2 or a 5dsr if you have to use Canon
i want this for my A7II.
Can you test the Mitakon 50mm 0.95! please
Could you once highlight the difference between the cine and normal versions of the samyang lenses ?
The cine versions have a different design in their body. Optics are the same
Christopher Frost Photography thank you, i found out after watching some more of your great videos ;)
