      And it's not even just "in case you don't end up with the kind of child you want". Even if you get a neurotypical, able-bodied cishet child, they're still going to be their own person making their own choices, and that's clearly not something you support.

    • @SarastistheSerpent
      @SarastistheSerpent 8 місяців тому +156

      Far, _far_ less offensive. The Satanic goat is actually cool and clever. It was popularized by 17th and 18th century artistic depictions of Baphomet, which was the idol the Catholic Church invented and accused the Knights Templar of worshipping when they had them arrested and executed for idolatry (because the Church and various Catholic monarchs were deeply in dept to the Templars). The goat was chosen by artists depicting Baphomet as a reference to the Greek pagan god Pan, who was a deity of nature, ribaldry and music.

      I grew up in the same situation. Taught hatred as if it were truth and then had had a horrible experience realizing everything I'd been taught was wrong when I accidentally came upon NOAHFINNCE and Jamie at the start of high school and realized that apparently, it's not normal for cis girls to want a hysterectomy, mastectomy, short hair ("boy style"), and to be seen as boys by everyone around me (I'm a trans man).
      I applaud you for being an ally despite being cis (possibly) yourself. I'd like to think it'd be the same for me but I've never had that experience so I'll never know.

      Been there in regard to the questioning. My advice is to pay attention to what your body is telling you. If you're able to accept your feelings (whatever they are), you will probably be happier and have a clearer mind.

    On the topic of Harry Potter tattoos, a friend of mine (a cis man) has a Harry Potter tattoo that he got many years ago. When JK went full transphobe, he went back to his tattoo artist and had her incorporate the trans flag into the existing design, cuz he didn't want trans people to feel unsafe around him upon seeing it. He turned it into a statement of "I am a safe person and will have your back", and it's one of the many things I (as a nonbinary person) absolutely adore him for 🥰

    Jamie, thank you so much for mentioning that intersex people are equally a part of discussions about human biology! I'm an intersex nonbinary person, but I was mistakenly assigned AFAB and had doctors intentionally misdiagnose me to hide the fact that they discovered I was intersex, so I spent a large part of my life without an understanding of why my body didn't function the way people told me it should. Including intersex people in conversations about queerness, identity, and sociocultural sciences is so vital to our safety as well as our ability to explore our identities.
    Btw, for folks who are new to learning about this, most intersex people (including myself) do not feel as if it is a queer identity, but are included in queer discussions and spaces because our existence is considered controversial and counterculture for the same reason: The disruption of harmful stereotypes and norms in western cultures. Us existing would mean people would have to reevaluate their preconceived notions about human nature and identity, which people don't tend to be fond of.

      Intersex people are my favorite argument against bigots whenever they start spouting their "gender is determined by biology" nonsense. I found the entire concept of intersex fascinating when we read a book about it in college, and ever since I've been defending trans people with the very fact that people with conditions like yours exist. I'm sorry you had to go through so much because of how bigoted the medical staff around you were, but I'm glad you've found your identity now. Best wishes for you, random internet friendo

      I'm not intersex but I know that a lot of the USA's bills banning gender affirming care for trans kids have specific bits saying that it's okay to do surgery if they're intersex to "correct" their bodies (not sure if that wording is entirely correct for what the bills say haven't read them because I live in scotland. also this is what usa tories believe, not me, being intersex doesn't make you broken or in need of correcting)

    • @minsungswifey
      @minsungswifey 8 місяців тому +17

      I found I might be intersex- I’ve started slowly growing thick beard hair and I was AFAB! I would also expect my parents not to tell me this because my dad’s homophobic/transphobic. I’m also genderfluid so I don’t mind it but it’s just surprising that I’ve only found this out after I moved out from living with my dad a few years ago.
      I also have issues with my body not functioning the same way as others- usually have a lot of pain and discomfort during times where there shouldn’t be in comparison.

    • @rebeccajesse4604

      People exist in a never ending spectrum of variety. That is how biology works. I find it hilarious that people think they should put morals on the way a person’s body looks/functions. There is no such thing as limited options in biology, and the fact people think so and then use “biology” to defend their moral arguments is absurd.
      Also, I’m sorry that your existence, and the existence of other intersex people is used as a “gotcha” moment in arguments but I’m glad you’ve found spaces that are accepting and acknowledge you for who you are. Everyone deserves that. Congratulations on learning/developing who you are and on your journey to find/make a place for yourself.

    17:49 - The joke is transgender people are pointing and laughing at cis people for having a name their mom picked for them.
    18:49 - I can only assume the train was meant to say "define". "Knowing that my body does not define who I really am".
    19:25 - So, there's someone I know who is agender, they/them or xie/xer (I actually don't know how they're spelled, I've only heard them spoken). I've only met them via Discord, over voice chat doing D&D. The problem is, they have a fairly feminine voice, and so it's actually difficult for me to break the societal training and remember to say "they" instead of "she". It is something I put effort into, and it took some time to get used to putting that effort in. (Part of me wonders if it's hindered by the fact that I'm a trans girl, and have several trans girls in my life, so part of me defaults to female at the slightest provocation. I hope not.) Every time I do catch myself using the wrong pronoun, I do correct myself, and we've gotten everyone in the call doing it. If someone says "she", someone invariably will point out "They" or "Xie". Not in an angry way, not in a scolding way, just helping to build that habit.
    But there is a clear distinction between "I messed up, sorry" and "I refuse to respect you and I don't care". Very easy to tell the difference in almost every instance.

    My love (and obsession) for Harry Potter is one of the reasons I got a job at Universal's Wizarding World. Working in Diagon for so many years only increased my love, since I often met other super-fans, and I loved themeing as a Witch
    Now, things are harder. I can't actually leave, since I don't want to quit (Universal has decent medical and good benefits), and I can't transfer yet, since I don't have the attendance points for it
    So, at this point, since I don't want to break the hearts of excited guests, I still try my best to theme, but in a way that "doesn't like the way the Ministry is", which is also how I feel living in America, so its fitting 😂

      I don‘t have anything against people transitioning AS ADULTS and after and actual thorough examination and therapy to make sure it is the right choice for them, but currently there is so much wrong with „gender affirming care“ !
      We need to talk about this!

    JKR is one example of how i can't "separate the art from the artist," because it's an undeniable fact that the perspective and opinions of the artist inform the art. knowing JKR is transphobic means i cannot unsee the very transphobic ways that rita skeeter is described. knowing how closely the description of the bank-owning goblins tracks with antisemitic stereotypes means i have to assume she is also antisemitic. i loved reading orson scott card's "ender's game"/"ender's shadow" series when i was younger but knowing his worldview now, i can't in good conscience recommend them to anyone because i have to assume that that worldview has been woven into the narrative of the stories he has chosen to tell. i think every artist conveys their beliefs with their art, that's why they make art. it may not always be entirely conscious, but it is inextricable.

    • @SarastistheSerpent

      I would never wish harm on anyone, including JKR much as I despise her and think her views are dangerous and evil, but a part of me can’t wait until she’s not around anymore so I can go back to enjoying HP guilt free, in the same way I can enjoy Lovecraft’s work today without worrying about his incredibly racist and antisemitic views.
      On the subject to the goblin antisemitism, in fairness to jkr I don’t think that was solely her doing. Unfortunately, European depictions of goblins and trolls are by nature antisemetic, because Christian Europeans for most of their history were antisemetic. Harry Potter merely continues the legacy of European antisemetic goblin tropes. Jkr didn’t invent them, and knowing her, she probably wasn’t even smart enough to know that folkloric goblins were antisemetic caricatures.

    • @sluttyMapleSyrup
      @sluttyMapleSyrup 8 місяців тому +1

      I think the fact JKR is still alive and makes an income from the continued relevance of HP is largely to blame for this dilemma too. And the fact she outright stated she sees any financial success of HP properties as affirmation and support for her views.
      Like, I find it's a lot easier to separate MJ's music from his actions and Jim Carrey's films from his anti-vax views because neither of them tried to tie support for their art to the crimes or views they expressed. MJ never went on-record to say "If you like my music then you must believe I did nothing wrong"...

    You summed up the bit at 16:52 perfectly! I know several trans men, and as a trans woman I both completely understand and am utterly baffled at their desire to be a man - just as I'm certain they feel the same with respect to trans women. We both have the same struggles and motivations, we're just approaching from opposite directions. That shared experience and connection is a wonderful thing. But there's something about that paradox of understanding that tickles my brain and amuses me greatly.

      It's important to note that this was many years ago. Back then we didn't even know about trans people.
      Today he's still a guy. But he's gay. And a dancer. Maybe back then he thought that only girls could marry guys and only girls could be dancers. Or maybe he'll come out as trans one day. Idk.
      But that was just how I thought back then. Just like when I prepared a play for my family. And I called it 'The female dragon'. Because I wanted to name the second part 'The male dragon'. And I wanted the second play to be the better one. 😅😂 Kids have such a funny logic sometimes.

      Personally, it feels like my brain just says certain body parts aren't meant to be there, and parts that are missing should be there. Not much to do with social situations - though they are frustrating, but mostly it just comes down to the body I see in the mirror isn't mine. Though given my very masculine looking body and my desire to have the opposite, it's as much how I see myself as it is how others see me.
      I never really considered it had anything to do with people thinking things would be easier as the opposite gender.

    So yesterday was my first birthday since beginning my transition. All of my gifts are still in transit because my family has the executive functioning skills of a comatose sloth, and it was overall nothing spectacular looking from the outside in. And yet I cant recall feeling better on any single birthday of mine since elementary school. For the first time in as long as I can remember there was a sentiment in my head other than "Oh fuck, now I have to do that all for another year, Christ on a bike I can't wait to be dead." I'm actually looking forward to things. I kept getting these flashes of "I get to be a GIRL!" that still fill me with the most glorious euphoria. My parents calling me their daughter is still a rush unparalleled.
    Over the years I've gained a reputation in my family of being hard to buy for and asking for big ticket items. In retrospect i think I was looking to try and fill the hole in my soul: throw things into the void until it stopped screaming. This year for my birthday I got my hope back. I got my future back. I got my self-love and self-esteem back. I got MYSELF back. Who needs anything else after that?
    I'm really looking forward to the holidays now.

    I'm not religious either, but one of my favourite things a religious person told me was that everyone has free will and it is not up to others to dictate another's life choices when they effect no one else's lives, even the religious choices. And that if God was doing anything by putting a trans person in their path, it was a test to see whether or not the religious person would use their God-given free will to choose kindness and empathy toward the person who used their own free will to choose personal happiness. They told me they were disappointed to see how many religious people seem to bomb every one of God's empathy tests.
    Also a note on regret rates for HP tats: I'm an artists & was paid to design one for a trans guy. A week later, a DAY before he was gonna get the tattoo done, JK put out her first ever public "I'm actual a trash human" post. I immediately messaged him it just in case and he was so thankful he hadn't gotten it yet. He paid me again to instead design a Doctor Who tattoo that he did eventually get. He loves messaging me articles about David Tennant being so vocally trans supportive.

    Speaking of the tattoos one think I find somewhat ironic about the whole Harry Potter fandom is that for me (and probably many others) HP fanfics were among the first stories I came across that painted queer _and_ disabled and neurodivergent people in a positive and respectful light. Of course I read some stories with gay or handicapped people but it was rare and most of the time when I did find them they were either so old being gay/lesbian was part of "the horror" (Carmilla) or they were killed off, and the disability was only painted as a tragic and pitiful thing, and neurodivergents were only "retards" or rude and screaming and so on. The HP fandom showed me that lgbtq+ characters can have a happy ending, and that even if a character is deaf/blind/etc they can be happy, and that autistic characters aren't just screaming or rude etc. It's truly a pity it's creator decided to be an asshole, just imagine what she could've done for the world if she had been a good person

    on the "cis people change their name too" thing. guess who did change his name:
    Elton John. Yes he wasn't always named Elton John.
    "uhhh but that's his artist name..." nop, look it up, it's his legal name

    19:35 With coming out to a child and having them use a new name/pronouns for you-I’ll always be so thankful that, when I came out to my best friends son who had known me as female all his lil 6 year life, we explained “We all thought X was a girl, but X has figured out he’s a boy, and would like to be called Fin now and be called “he”, but it’s okay if it’s a little weird and you still call him X, all right?” And this boy just said “I’m not a girl either, that would make me sad.” And that was that. Never misgendered me or dead named.

    “There comes a point where it becomes a chore to keep misgendering trans people, but by then it just makes you look crazy”
    That’s literally what it’s like for the people hating Jammie in the comments and keep calling him “her”. Dude’s got a better beard than I will ever have, the _only_ reason you misgender him is because he’s trans

      Honestly what they make me want to do is transition and then become a stealth UA-camr, see how many people call me ‘she’ and how I “look like a woman” before I tell them

    WAIT WAIT WAIT. Your point about celebrities using aliases just reminded me... JKR goes by "Robert Galbraith" for her crime series, so she's clearly fine with the idea of someone using a chosen name that doesn't "match" their assigned gender at birth-as long as they aren't trans. ...I just can't even with her, at this point.

    I have 2 Harry Potter themed tattoos and I don't regret them. I did for a while after finding out JK is a transphobe, I'm trans and it hurt so much to hear. But then I remembered why I got them. My tattoos are representations of the self love and acceptance I found in the Harry Potter community. They're there to remind me of who I was, who I've grown to be, and the people who helped me through that change via the Harry Potter fandom. JK is a horrible woman who has hurt so many people, including people I know and love, with her views but I refuse to let her take more away from me by making me ashamed to love something that impacted so much of my life. When I say that I love Harry Potter I am not talking about that hateful woman, (hell I'm not even talking about the books half the time) I'm talking about the fandom, the world WE built and continue to build together and the home I and many others found amongst the community. Harry Potter is OUR'S not her's

    I'm reminded of the story where Diogenes the Cynic busts into a meeting of philosophers who were trying to come up with a simple and concise definition of a Man (human), and came up with "Featherless Biped". Diogenes walks in with a plucked chicken and says "Behold, here is your Man!"

    I am so happy that you’re being positive today. While I’ve watched your most recent videos, and have appreciated them, I did have to be in the right mindset to watch them. I’m pretty much just anxiety shaped like a human 😂
