After being lost for about three decades, some force led me to those church doors, once a monastery, on a Tuesday morning on August 29, 2017. Looking back now, I gave up trying to find, there was no God, and had developed a disdain for Him; so I don’t know why I would walk into any church at that time and on a summer morning when I could have slept in. Everything changed the moment I stepped in. To top it off, I was alone in there; no other person in there. It was just Jesus, the angels, Blessed Mother and the profound LOVE and mercy of the Holy Spirit. It’s not human; it’s not of this world. I am an academic and like most, human reason and evidence is “god.” From that moment on, everything of me and of the world (past, present and what is to come) began to make sense. A lot has happened since then and a lot I was able to recall since my childhood. Since then I have been given many opportunities and moments that are little presents of love from God. I have had many child like moments that inspire child like awe and wonder; like a kid in Disney on Christmas Day. With that said, one of my greatest moments was my confirmation at 43 years old. When? In 2018 on Easter….sealed in the Holy Spirit on EASTER! Now that is a powerful statement
I've always appreciated how Matt doesn't simply cheerlead for the home team. He asks the hard questions. Catholic now, but I was fortunate to have been raised in a Bible-reading Protestant home, so it's nice to hear a fair treatment and not Protestant bashing. Much appreciated.
What an excellent biblical overview of the priesthood! A topic often misunderstood by Catholics and Protestants alike. Cheers to Dr John Bergsma and Pints!
I was glad to listen to this interview this morning -- my 15-year-old Southern Baptist niece has been asking questions, and I need to be able to keep up with her!!
14:30 is my favorite part. As a cradle Catholic I never questioned the "participatory mediation" aspect of Catholic Christianity. As I have aged and became challenged by Protestants that was concerning to me. Hearing Dr. Bergsma saying that we are all baptized into the body of Christ so of course we would have a role to play, although of course to a lower degree than Christ himself.
Bergsma has to make excuses for those priests living in sin. If the Roman Catholic church excommunicated all of their practicing homosexual priests that would reduce the priesthood by half.
His detailed description of his investigations of the truths of Catholic teaching, especially the real presence in the Eucharist and Mary, just blew me away! Wow! What an amazing, amazing witness! I ❤️this so much!
Dr Bergsma was my son’s professor. Our son just bought us his book that he wrote with Dr Brandt ! It’s is fascinating! Connecting the Old testament roots with the new . It’s a beautiful reference book .
Dr. Bergma is an absolute blessing to the Catholic Church. I've purchased many of his books and his writing is very readable for laymen like me. Bible basics for Catholics and new testament basic for Catholics are two books you should read before you dive into the Bible on your own.
Thank you for this wonderful interview Matt. I especially enjoyed hearing Dr. Bergsma explain the Hebrew understanding of the priesthood and the "signal words" that indicate a priest and also how Christ conferred the priestly privelages on the apostles, over time.
Absolutely love Bergsma. I still listen to my wife’s lecture recordings from his classes. Thank you for having him on! I hope Bob Rice is on in the future, too 👊
What a great time with you two. Matt always great, calm questions. I’m a revert after 50yrs. Needed to read the Bible and after several attempts…Fr. Mike started podcast “Bible in a year”. I love reading while he reads aloud with commentary. I never could have taken this on my own…and now, I finally find the Old Testament not only interesting but exciting. The podcast with study guide began by being the #1Apple podcast for many weeks. Just that fact is amazing, in these times.
This was wonderful. Loved listen to you Dr. Bergsma. I love your book ‘ A Catholic introduction to the Bible The Old Testament ‘ that you did with Dr. Pitre. Are you doing the same book for the New Testament? Praying you and Dr. Pitre are writing it. The Old Testament is Awesome! Please please do another book with Dr. Pitre. We so need it. 🙏🏻
I believe it was Fr. Mike who either said or quoted someone, but he said "Saints rise up when the church needs it the most." This has stuck with me, we really need revision in our church and we can do it together 😌
In fairness the description here of the priest's role - that shocks Matt - as a face of the people to God and word of God to the people is classic Old Testament theology from Calvin Seminary.
So awesome! One of my sisters walked away from the faith and is a Calvinist ! Years of prayers for her will bare fruit ( God willing ) it’s sad , however I know The Lord is still working on her and her family
@@cjgodley1776 interesting how many apologists on this channel are trained in reformed settings... maybe we have a kingdom strength Catholicism needs? By the way reformed people confess one holy catholic church; all the early church fathers are ours too.
@@johnbouwers6787 I converted to Catholicism from "reformed" (deformed) Christianity. You don't have a "kingdom strength", whatever good is in you is residual Catholicism. The Catholic Church is the fullness of the faith and is the Church historically established by Christ.
A good study of Church History will help keep one as a humble servant! The Church is always struggling, yet the Holy Spirit is, and always has been, our guide.
So excited to hear about the Essenes. I read that Sts. Joaquin and Anne - parents of Blessed Mother were Essenes and Anne who was enlightened to know the future, raised the Blessed Mother in preparation for her future role!!
Well said, well put, well understood. Thank you Dr Bergsma And when Jesus saw that [he] answered with understanding, He said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” Mark 12:34
How about our Catholic schools get behind teaching the truth for a start. I'm sorry, but in my experience, vocations to the priesthood for teens are discouraged at best, mocked at worst by many Catholic teachers. Don't get me started on the general consensus among Catholic school teachers on abortion, trans topics, feminism (3rd wave) etc...etc... It is so sad and very challenging as a parent. Lord have mercy on us all.

21:54 Dr. Bergsma's elders would have encouraged and maybe even subsidized his advanced education, specifically so that he could become a Presbyterian/evangelical pastor. His consultation with them, his hesitation to go Catholic immediately, make sense as part of the conversion process. But ultimately, for anyone who's intellectually satisfied that our faith is true but worries they would be "ungrateful" to their parents or teachers by going Catholic (especially pastors), Jesus gives encouragement in John 4: "The saying is true, that 'One sows and another reaps.' I sent you to reap what you did not work for; others have done the work, and you are sharing the fruits of their work." Formation & pastorship are supposed to be for the people's spiritual good; don't let embarrassment about them hold you back from the very highest good that a Christian can receive.
I like John Bergsma! I’ve known of him for a while but I love his cheerfulness and humor! His lightness as well as his devotion to our Lord!! Loved this video Matt F, thanks!

To the questioned asked: Why only male priests? I heard many women say it is not fair that the Church only allows male priests. I have also heard a man tell me he was mad at God. I asked why? He said because I am a man and I will never know what it feels like to have a life grow within me, no man can ever know only women. Why can't men be pregnant. Was God fair? Well taking these two points of view I asked Our Lord about this. I knew God is Just and Loving and has His design. What came to me was this: "Among females, they bring souls from God to earth. Then not to leave out males God choose some but few, to bring those souls back up to heaven. They give birth by Baptism and the Sacraments as Priests, and mothers give birth to souls on earth. It is a Divine Circle of Love. There is a circle in nature God's design and a circle in the spiritual sense. So that all things depend upon each other and no one can think they are not important." So you see woman, you a very special job that isn't done by males, with God female you make priests in your womb. That can not be done by males. So is God unfair?
Can someone point me to the location he explains the term “remembrance” as it pertains to ancient Hebrew cultic worship?? This is such a missing link in the arguments for the real presence vs symbolic gesture of the Eucharist. Trying to further convert myself then my brothers. Also pray for me please. Thanks
I don’t know but check out time stamp 1:37:20 maybe that will help. He discusses his book Stunned by Scripture which details what convinced him to convert.
Hey Matt, Love your selection of guests. Would be great to see interviews from prominent Catholics from Australia. Cardinal George Pell, Dr. Robert Haddad... I know very few but I'm sure there are more.
Excellent discourse on the Catholic Church to which many still clother se their minds-misunderstanding in some cases and willful calumny and hanging on to cherished beliefs and ideas against the church despite the fact they are proven wrong by Holy Scriptures
Hey Matt, it would honestly be super helpful and awesome if you could clip where Dr. Bergsma is talking about the biblical basis for the priesthood and post it. It is super relevant and honestly one of the best logical walk throughs of the subject Ive ever heard. Thanks and God bless
Man I'd love to hear more from Bergsma on biblical translations. There are so many discrepancies between my (protestant) bibles and Catholic teaching. One thing that I've had trouble with is that Mary will crush the head of the serpent - "blatantly false!" Ive cried every time I heard it - I had no idea that there was a difference in translation, I just thought Catholics read the bible wrong (I'm sorry guys! I repent.) But I wish he would talk about Luke 1:28 (I think 28? might be wrong) where the Angel says "Hail Mary, full of grace" in all of my translations it has been translated to be more close to "you who have been given grace" or something like that. Quite different!
@Prasanth Thomas I pray the hail mary with "full of grace" I trust the church in that sense. It just didnt make sense to me biblically because the verse is translated differently in my protestant bibles :) thanks for your answers :D
Go to St. Jerome's Latin Vulgate. "Illius" refers to either gender, his, hers, its; of him, of her, of it. The word has always been translated to indicate that Our Lady would crush the head of the serpent when she agreed to be the Mother of the Messiah. She is the human being that Satan fears the most. Satan was cast down from heaven because of his pride. He refused to adore the incarnate Jesus because he figured that he, Satan was far superior to any man, even a Man who was also God.
"Full of grace..." Again, the Latin Vulgate has "gratia plena" " full of grace. ( I always trust St. Jerome) The Protestant bibles prefer "highly favoured" which sounds nice but has a different meaning. The Angel Gabriel addressed Mary not by her given name, but, as it were, by a new name, Full Of Grace. If Mary was full of grace there was no room in her body or her soul for sin. Hence the Immaculate Conception. Some people like to modernize the prayer by changing "thee, thine, thou" to you, your..., but the Vulgate uses thee... "Thee" is singular while "you" is plural. Thee, thou, thine are words still used in many parts of England, they indicate whether you are talking to one person or more than one. Similar to the French language. It really iritates me when people think they're clever by saying "...the Lord is with YOU..."
@@alhilford2345 something that hit me the other day is that people probably spoke koine greek still when Jerome translated his Bible, so it should be trustworthy if he did his home work.

Amen! Welcome home.
Would love to hear your story on Pints with Aquinas or the Journey Home (EWTN). 😄
I've always appreciated how Matt doesn't simply cheerlead for the home team. He asks the hard questions. Catholic now, but I was fortunate to have been raised in a Bible-reading Protestant home, so it's nice to hear a fair treatment and not Protestant bashing. Much appreciated.
This is the most listenable 2hr conversation I've yet found. Dr Bergsma is such a great teacher! And he has a charism to teach!
Dr. Bergsma is a great presenter of the faith-humorous and insightful.
Agree. He's funny, intelligent and not full of himself.
Will you have Dr Brant Pitre one day ?
Would love to see Dr. Brant Pitre on your show.
That would be awesome I hope Matt has that scheduled.
Agreed!
Id love that. 4 hours, take as many pee brakes you need!
Yes, I vote for dr Pitre in the show too 😊
Wonderful interview and love Dr.Bergsma...one of brilliant catholic apologies. 🇨🇦
What an excellent biblical overview of the priesthood! A topic often misunderstood by Catholics and Protestants alike.
Cheers to Dr John Bergsma and Pints!
You are so very correct, Thank you for taking your time and comment. Blessings 🙏
That’s a very quotable quote, “You salute the uniform, not the man”. That goes for cardinals, bishops, priests, deacons, and religious.
What's the name of the book?
@@bluschke52 I think it would be: A Catholic Introduction to the Bible: The Old Testament
Dr. Bergma is an absolute blessing to the Catholic Church. I've purchased many of his books and his writing is very readable for laymen like me. Bible basics for Catholics and new testament basic for Catholics are two books you should read before you dive into the Bible on your own.
Wow never knew that he started his Doctrine out as a Protestant, but by the time he graduated he ended up a Catholic, that's so beautiful, praise God
Yes, praise God.
This is one of my favorite interviews, Matt. Fascinating!
Awesome video...always so so good to listen to Dr. Bergsma and Dr. Brant Pitre....
So much to learn from them...
And Dr. Scott Hahn :)
I hope Bob Rice is on in the future, too 👊
Hey, John Paul! Good to see you!
Matt, you HAVE to bring Dr. Brant Pitre in again! He and Dr. Bergsma are AMAZING
I find Dr. Bergsma sense of humor hilarious, I really enjoy listening to him.
Dr. Bergsma!!! What a treat! One of my favorite teachers!
John Bergsma is a very brilliant, humble, man.
I learned so much from this conversation. Dr Bergsma is a wonderful educator and his Faith in Our Lord is inspiring.
I believe it was Fr. Mike who either said or quoted someone, but he said "Saints rise up when the church needs it the most." This has stuck with me, we really need revision in our church and we can do it together 😌
Great interview with Dr. Bergsma, thank you!
YAAAYY I love that you did this one! Bergsma is my favorite - best classes I took at Franciscan by far.
Very grateful for Dr. Bergsma and his writings. I listened to his lecture years ago in Houston. Very insightful discussion.
My goodness what a blessing this whole talk was. Thank you to you both.
Wonderful interview and super informative. Will listen a number of times :-)
Dude! I went to sem with you! Blessings brother.
Another former Calvin grad here.
It's great now being Catholic! Let's make more converts! :)
Scott Hahn is number one. I think the second is John Bergsma. I believe they are the greatest living biblical scholars right now. I love Steubenville!
Agree and they're both Catholic converts.
@Eucharist Angel :
Actually, nobody cares about your rambling because you're always WRONG!
@@carolynkimberly4021 :
Okey-Dokey.
I understand! ! !
😊
Brant Pitre? He's my favourite but I love Hahn and Bergsma too, they are my favourite three.
A good study of Church History will help keep one as a humble servant! The Church is always struggling, yet the Holy Spirit is, and always has been, our guide.
This is blowing my mind! Sooooo good. God bless Dr. Bergsma
Love Dr. Bergsma, he's always a joy to listen to!
So excited to hear about the Essenes. I read that Sts. Joaquin and Anne - parents of Blessed Mother were Essenes and Anne who was enlightened to know the future, raised the Blessed Mother in preparation for her future role!!
Well said, well put, well understood. Thank you Dr Bergsma
And when Jesus saw that [he] answered with understanding, He said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” Mark 12:34
Probably my most favorite interview on this channel. Thank you Dr. Bergsma.
By far one of your best guests. I enjoyed every minute .
Wow great discussion! Thank you for having Dr. John Bergsma on your show. It was enlightening!
Excellent interview! as an ex-protestant, this blew my mind!
PS: Dr. Bergsma looks like Alan Arkin :D
Thanks, Matt, for providing us with such quality content.
Keeping you in my prayers!
Thank you Dr. Bergsma and Matt Fradd! Ut adveniat regnum tuum, adveniat regnum Mariae!
Agree. Its happening in the Philippines, talk about catholic schools... they promote feminism, sogie bill and RH bill
@@cristinaarcillasPage1 both bills are an affront to human dignity and do not protect basic human rights including freedom of religion/conscientious objection etc... a travesty!
An increasing number of Catholic parents are choosing homeschooling.
I am not a Catholic but listening to these men is such a great experience: learning much. Thank you.
Thank you Matt for this interview! Dr. Bergsma - thank you for shedding light on so many riches of the Catholic Faith!!
Thanks for introducing to me Dr Bergsma.
I like John Bergsma! I’ve known of him for a while but I love his cheerfulness and humor! His lightness as well as his devotion to our Lord!! Loved this video Matt F, thanks!
I love this guy -- great sense of humor. Last night my RCIA director gave us all his book, "Bible Basics for Catholics," and I love it. It brought me to UA-cam today to find him, and of course he's in Steubenville, with Matt! Seems like all the cool people live in Steubenville.
Can really relate to what Matt says about when reading the Bible. A lot of times I do feel like I need to be in the perfect mood to read it.
Love you Dr Bergsma! You explain so clearly!
25:09...Church of Christ member...and a huge admirer of St. John Paul 2🇻🇦 (PBUH)...
Very, very important point about women and the Temple.
Thank you, Dr. Bergsma! Praise the Lord, Jesus Christ!
Great discussion.
Jim Rohn once said, you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with and here are my top 6 - scott hahn-steve ray-Tim Staples-Dr. Brant Pitre- Dr. John Bergsma- robert haddad
Matt, you‘ve become a great interviewer!! Congrats!
Love this episode!!
What came to me was this:
"Among females, they bring souls from God to earth. So that all things depend upon each other and no one can think they are not important."
So you see woman, you a very special job that isn't done by males, with God female you make priests in your womb. That can not be done by males. So is God unfair?
Wow, redemptive suffering at 27:00, so powerful! We take it for granted...
In OCIA, full throttle, this video steps on the gas harder. Love it !!!
Also, check out time stamp 15:55. That may be what you’re looking for…
Great conversation
Thank you guys! Wonderful!
Hey Matt,
Love your selection of guests.
Would be great to see interviews from prominent Catholics from Australia.
Cardinal George Pell, Dr. Robert Haddad... I know very few but I'm sure there are more.
So wonderful... and full of insights thanks a lot for this episode.
I 🧡 Dr. Bergsma, thanks for inviting him 😁🙏
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing. So much to learn.
Love what you are doing Matt!! Thank you 🙏 😇🙏
this is an awesome video thank you so much
Tuning in from the Free Methodist Church! Keep up the good work 😇
Excellent discourse on the Catholic Church to which many still clother se their minds-misunderstanding in some cases and willful calumny and hanging on to cherished beliefs and ideas against the church despite the fact they are proven wrong by Holy Scriptures
Bergsma is brilliant!
Wow, I got so much from this!! So many new things to look into!
Just Wow!
Super interview with a super theologian, Matt. Thanks so much.
Gotta love Dr. Bergsma!!!
Brilliant and heart-warming,
Hey Matt, it would honestly be super helpful and awesome if you could clip where Dr. Bergsma is talking about the biblical basis for the priesthood and post it. It is super relevant and honestly one of the best logical walk throughs of the subject Ive ever heard. Thanks and God bless
Bring on Pitre and Michael Barber too!
I repent.)
But I wish he would talk about Luke 1:28 (I think 28? might be wrong) where the Angel says "Hail Mary, full of grace" in all of my translations it has been translated to be more close to "you who have been given grace" or something like that. Quite different!
@Prasanth Thomas yet everytime one prays the Rosary one says "Hail Mary full of grace"..
"Full of grace..."
Again, the Latin Vulgate has "gratia plena"
" full of grace.
( I always trust St. Jerome)
The Protestant bibles prefer "highly favoured" which sounds nice but has a different meaning.
I hope you'll interview him again some time in the future. I'd like to have heard more about Dr. Bergsma's area of expertise.
Brought back memories of long conversations in the Huddle!
I love Pints With Aquinas, as a Calvinist, it gives me justification to drink over priced craft beer and argue religion.
I love that you’re enjoying and watching this brilliant interview 😎🙏
I know Calvinists. They never needed an excuse for drinking and arguing religion before. 😆🍺
