      I would’ve before finding out about all the biopsies! I’ve done many biopsies and had a few myself, and if you’re choosing to do it that’s fine and it’s not so bad, but these animals don’t know what is happening and why they have to go through that pain. It would be better if they used one cow one time then moved on to a new one, that’s not much worse than immunizing them. But the harm reduction will be nice as is, I just feel horrible for the animals that have to be specimens

      I don't like meat but I'd feed it to my cats. Also I think it's less harmful to animals and the environment so if meat eaters eat cultured meat it'll be a step up, in my opinion. There are a lot of people who will never give up meat and our current system of meat production is not sustainable.

    Clean meat is potentially fantastic for people who want to go vegan or vegetarian but can't for health reasons. Or even people who just struggle because of social stuff.
    Even in the worst case scenario of requiring stem cells from a donor animal once every three months and the animal isn't treated well, that's still far less cruel than the current standard.

    I feel like the question one has to ask themselves in this situation is: if there was alien species that was eating human meat would you rather them continue to eat humans wholesale or would you rather them biopsy a limited number of humans? Personally I’d rather them just biopsy us than to know my children are going to be eaten. Also I have to believe this will at some point be better for the environment than the raising of farm animals.

    • @raapyna8544
      @raapyna8544 Рік тому

      I like your comment (the alien idea is funny and clever), but I don't see the environmental standpoint as a valid option. Well, maybe in a world where meat consumption is very reduced and preserved for special occasions. Still nah. Food is a consumable. It takes a lot of energy to make and use technologies. Even clean energy requires mining and destroying nature. Death is taboo but sometimes part of restoration. I would not sacricife a lake for a mine to produce factory-made fish.

    • @andreakessler337

    • @katelijnesommen
      @katelijnesommen Рік тому +15

      Cats are obligate carnivores, they really do need meat (specifically taurine) to be healthy. Swayze has talked about this before, she used to have a cat and iirc she fed him meat-based food for the entirety of his life and then didn't get a new cat after his death, because it's just not fair to a cat to feed them a vegan diet. They will not thrive and their life span will be significantly shortened. Maybe there are like taurine supplements or other things that cats really need that you could give them? But their digestive tract would really struggle with plant-based food, it's just not what they are biologically built for. If you want a vegan pet, dogs can be healthy on a well-planned plant diet and obviously so can rabbits and other plant-eaters.

    I didn't even think of how clean meat can be used to make crazy meat combinations and genetically engineered stuff, if they can solve the sampling and fbs problems and throw out the need to be "natural" then this could make some amazing luxury products. But I think the most important function of clean meat will be to accommodate people who can't eat a vegan diet due to dietary limitations, and to feed meat-eating pets. That should definitely be prioritized over luxury uses eventually but in the current market it needs broader appeal to grow. I think people would buy crazy frankenmeats as long as they taste good enough.

    A couple weeks ago I did a speech on animal experimentation for my speech class (I’m 16 lol) so I’ve done a lot of research on the topic recently. The “Bipartisan FDA Modernization Act 2.0” unanimously passed the senate about a month and a half ago. From what I’ve seen, this would ban animal testing mandates. Though, as you said, animal testing isn’t technically required for food products as it is for drugs or other things. I still believe this would affect animal testing in the food industry because there are already tons of medical organizations working on alternatives to animal testing and with these methods being able to actually be used in practice will (I think) rapidly advance these methods. So there will be safe alternative methods to animal testing available (which are cheaper than using animals) and I would think the FDA would loosen up on alls ends if this bill was passed but idk I feel like I’m just kind of spewing nonsense, my little brain cannot handle this complex level of thinking lol.

    Something that has always bothered me about the vegan stance is “why feed the feed to the cows when you can eat that yourself?” Because not everyone can afford the time in preparation and consumption to eat a large bowl of beans 3 times a day, or the expensive boutique processed alternatives. Cows do the hard work in condensing nutrients so we don’t have to, because a lot of us can’t. It’s just not a simple problem, and acting like it is is both naive and privileged.

    I think the serum in the growth media is not an insurmountable issue. There have been serum replacement options for cell culture for years, and if anyone is doing stem cell cultures, the serum replacement is preferred to eliminate hormones and growth factors effects. Some of the alternatives are cheap too. They can absolutely not use FBS. They could also get a relatively small amount of blood to generate induced pluripotent stem cells from the blood cells that can be propagated for years, so muscle biopsies wouldn't even be necessary.
    All that to say, I think it will get cheaper and could be a viable option, it's just a while off still.

    Like you said, it’s subjective… but I do think you dropped the ball here. We desperately need clean meat, like for yesterday.
    1. most people will never go vegan for the ethics. You seem to realize it, but you immediately undermine it by saying “[rofl] just eat plants duh”. Again, this will not happen for most people, and the fact that you’re unhappy about it doesn’t justify to undermine that we need clean meat to end animal farming.
    2. for people who can’t go plant-based because of allergies or another health issues.
    3. for pets (and rescue). My 2 cats have 14 years, I adopted them before I became animalist anew. And when I did, I find myself in the trolley dilemma. Well, it’s bugging me but they’re family, they’re my responsibility, and I will not abandon them in a refuge. And no, I will not feed them plant-based either, they’re obligatory carnivores. Their well-being is my responsibility. If they develop an health issue which can even remotely being caused by plant-based food, I will not forgive myself. Just forget it. However, once they’re gone, I will not adopt another cat… unless clean meat. And I can't express how much I adore cats, it's a huge sacrifice for me.
    4. and, like you said, zoonoses.

    I know there was one clean chicken meat where they made the meat from the cells acquired off of a shed chicken feather. I think as technology improves and progresses there will be ways to move away from needing to repeatedly harvest, it may also depend on what cells. Some human cells types used in research are considered immortal cells, I wonder if a similar thing can be accomplished within the clean meat industry. There may also be hybrid processes where the method uses a combination of plant based substances and cell cultured meats. I agree that there needs to be more information on how the clean meat samples are collected and what happens to the animal. Initially yes these products will be more expensive but it is believed that once the initial cost of development is overcome that the cell cultured meat will be very inexpensive to produce and the facilities to produce it will be very inexpensive as well and the product will be extremely affordable and will have even less environmental impact than plant based products. This may be dependant on which method, but the method of developing meat from a microbes found in yeast will be very economical and uses very little water.

      These precision fermentation diary proteins (Perfect Day makes whey and New Culture) are made by tweaking a yeast cell to produce whey or casein. There’s no requirement of any biopsy of animal cells. It’s a genetically modified microorganism. And then similarly to how fungi is grown, they feed them sugars to grow and then harvest the protein from them. Something like that…check out their websites or precision fermentation in general. But no animals are involved.

    I see it as an incredible improvement. Even if we end up with a stock of 3000 cows kept in matrix-like prison chambers, is that not better than the millions of cattle in the meat industry we have currently?
    We're never going to get the human race off of meat. It's just not realistic to think we could ever accomplish that. But getting people to switch from meat that harms a small group of stock animals for donor cells vs millions of livestock for slaughter is not unrealistic to expect (given we get to the point where the cost is comparable) People don't want to cause harm intentionally, so given the choice between small harm and big harm, without sacrificing anything, people will choose to do less harm.

    For example, say in 30 years from now “clean meat” is everywhere, cost parity, the common form of 99% of consumed meat the way factory farmed meat is today. That’s billions of animals not suffering and killed.
    Say in 30 years then that clean meat is NOT around/as niche as “happy farm” meat. Maybe, generously, saying that 25% of the world is vegan now. Still means that billions of animals are being killed. Even if another 25% of the world ate “flexitarian” it would still result in the deaths of more animals than it would if “clean meat” was around. Vegans who think supporting clean meat is anti-vegan make no sense. Not about whether to call it vegan but to support it.
    The best way to a future with the least amount of animal suffering is going to be something like this. The whole world just isn’t going to become herbivores out of a strong moral ethic in the amount of time that I think it would take for “clean meat” to be an accessible, if not dominant, source of meat. I’m also not interested in “but meat is still bad for you!” Argument. Who cares. People do things that are bad for them all the time. There are vegans who smoke and drink. I’m not interested in policing peoples health especially here in the US where the structures that be aid in our unhealthiness and has no public health system to better address these issues.
    Personally, I don’t want it, don’t care for it, won’t eat it. It’s been so long since I’ve eaten meat I really don’t care if I ever ate it again. Im content with the mock meats and substitutions I use for it. But generally I do support growing this industry and hoping it succeeds for the sake of animals and the planet.

    I hope this isn’t insensitive. I have a lot of people I know that won’t eat vegan meat because it doesn’t taste like meat. Is there any specific brands of vegan meat you recommend that taste as close to (or like) real meat? I know you have said in past videos you don’t like the iron blood taste of meat, but for people that do, what is a good vegan alternative?
    Edit: asking this question gives me anxiety. Please do not attack people I know and love because they like the taste of meat. I’m genuinely trying to find out more information to buy more vegan meat instead of animal products.

    We're in a climate crisis, developed and increasingly developing countries are battling epidemics of lifestyle diseases, and we're farming 80 billion animals a year. A biopsy every few months from a small amount of animals doesn't remotely compare.

It is indeed frustrating to me that those ex-vegans who go back to eating meat because it feels right for their health very seldom advocate for clean meat, I guess because they view it as "unnatural" :(

    It's funny--I think I would have considered eating it 30-some years ago when I started eating vegetarian, moving toward veganism because of animal welfare reasons. But at this point in my life, I simply don't think of meat as food, and I'd be kind of grossed out by it, and I've become more convinced of the health benefits of a wfpb diet,, and the animal concerns connected to this product still bother me, so no, I wouldn't eat it. I would love to feed my dogs cultured meat, though. If this became the norm for people who won't or can't give up eating meat, it could potentially be wonderful for cows and for the environment. It's for sure a move in a better direction.
