    And yeah, formula milk mimics breast milk. That's the point. Does he think it should mimic oreos or something?

  • @andianderson3017
    @andianderson3017 Рік тому +37

    I can’t produce appreciable milk. I don’t appear in any statistics at all because there’s no discernible reason for it-I have no underlying disorder or disease. I just have a very low low amount of breast tissue which isn’t considered a condition by anyone but plastic surgeons. I was so angry to discover that stats on women who can’t breast feed just leave women like me totally out-we’re inconvenient and the insinuation is that we’re making it up or not trying hard enough.
    My son landed in the hospital with dehydration because absolutely no one warned me that I might not be able to produce. I worked with lactations consultants, ate oatmeal like it was my job and ground pure fenugreek to drink fenugreek sludge tea (ugh). Nothing helped. I make 1 oz a day absolute peak. I lost sleep and sanity to achieve that level.
    Anyone who thinks formula should be demonized should be punched in the face. I almost hurt my kid out of fear. I had to BEG people to pay attention to the fact that my son had lost too much weight and was peeing brick dust. I was shamed within an inch of my life. My postpartum depression was so bad and I’m sure the extra sleep lose and constant stress didn’t help.
    All 3 of my babies were formula fed and they are healthy and happy. All the bad statistics on formula correlate with poverty which is likely the real risk factor here-because it’s usually poor women with blue collar jobs who have no choice but to use it. It turns out being exposed to unsafe living environments and high stress will get anyone. But the fact that they and women like me can feed our babies is awesome.
    This man with no boobs who has never tried to feed a baby can take a flying leap. I’m not saying I wish him harm, but I do hope he hits every red light and gets called names by a random stranger tomorrow.

    Fed is best. Breastfeed, pump, formula feed or a combination of all 3. So long as your baby is getting an appropriate amount of at least one and (if you're using them) all bottles are sterilised appropriately, it's fine. It's a matter of personal preference, individual priorities and luck. Shaming mothers who can't or choose not to breastfeed isn't helpful, nor is it helpful to demonise formula brand A when someone can't breastfeed and can't find or afford the super organic gold plated kind.

    I hate when people going against the formulas. I honestly think it's one of the greatest human inventions.
    My grandma fell ill after giving to my birth to my mum and she couldn't breastfeed. Formula wasn't available in their country (70ties, Eastern Block) and my great-grandma needed to make some homemade concoctions just to help my mum stay alive. Luckily, my mum did pull through (my granny also recovered), but she suffered for a while from eating food that was not appropriate for babies. They would have killed for formula.
    Also, I have adoptive parents both in my family and between my friends, and they both experienced shaming on the grounds of feeding their children formula. Like, what else can they do?!

      “Shamed for feeding them formula” absolutely ridiculous but don’t worry! Cuz us breastfeeding moms don’t catch a break either “just give them formula, it’s so much easier” or “how dare you breastfeed in front of me/my kid” blah blah blah. It’s all the same. You never win as a mom 🫠

      It's really irritating to hear these borderline conspiracy theories about milk vs formula. I have a friend who didn't want to use formula when her baby was born, even though it would've made her life a lot easier because she believed that breast milk made babies smarter.🤦

    My friend's oldest child had failure to thrive on breast milk. Turned out he was allergic to it. Moved him to soy formula. He just turned 9. She had twins, born a bit early like multiples often are, and they were both allergic at birth. She insisted on soy formula for both because she figured that would happen. The twins just turned 4. Those kids cannot have ANY dairy. This guy is many bad words I will not say.

    • @pollysshore2539
      @pollysshore2539 Рік тому +1

      I don’t think many people realize that FTT is a large issue. Many mothers have not realized that their child was not getting enough nutrients from their breast milk alone, or that they had allergies and/or sensitivity to it.
      I’m not a mother. I’m pushing 50 and having kids didn’t work out. Such is life. That said I became aware of this problem years ago after reading horror stories from hospitals and clinics that live by the Breast is Best mantra.
      That is not always the case.
      I think many women would like to breast feed for a multitude of reasons but it isn’t wise to advocate strict breast feeding. It can be dangerous/deadly. Women need to be aware of the signs and symptoms of potential problems and the Breast is Best crowd fail to put this information out there every single time.
      Many BIB adherents have displayed their willingness to let women and babies die rather than promote supplement with formula, which is a fantastic invention.
      I’m not even getting into BIB adherents who actually promote it because they want women to be relegated to the home.

    • @pollysshore2539
      @pollysshore2539 Рік тому

      I will say that the research behind BIB is often pernicious.
      I was strictly breast fed. I am the only one of my mothers 3 children that she was able to stay home with for a few years due to financial constraints. She went full on breast feeding and cloth diapers with me because that is what her mother used with all 8 of her children - in Southern Appalachia - before most houses had electricity and indoor plumbing.
      It worked out well. True, I didn’t have many ear infections as a child. I can’t remember having one but I have them yearly now. I’ve also always had issues with chronic sinus infections that turn into respiratory infections, etc. It’s messing with my ears now.
      Okay… your baby might have an IQ that is 1-2 points lower than those breast fed… for a minute. There is research that shows this levels out as the kids get older and there are other things than can be done to increase IQ if 1 point (that will level out) is an incredibly large concern for you.
      It’s all give or take.

    @7:00 I know this is pretty nit-picky, but he says that "babies have the most gut microbiome that they will ever have at that age, to start destroying it with those ingredients is bad news." This is just COMPLETELY incorrect. While it's no longer believed that babies' guts are 100% sterile, they have extremely low populations of gut bacteria, breastfeeding helps to establish a gut microbiome more favorable to "good" bacteria. Not to say formula-fed babies can't develop healthy gut microbiomes, they absolutely can. It just goes to show just how little he actually knows about medicine, showing that he believes newborns have a thriving gut microbiome. As you point out later in that section, babies just don't have a very developed gut.

      You did great. My neice breastfed her first two with no problems. Her last both couldn't eat because a deformity in their digestive system and soft palette (to this day they're not sure what caused it because it doesn't mirror cleft palette syndrome and genetic testing found no matching outliers, although it is something genetic) and the stress of a cross country move (alongside everyone getting the sick) just before they were born. The responders at "La Leche League " or "La lunatic league " kept telling her she was feeding her baby poison by supplementing with formula or not advising she seek medical help. I arrived on the scene to do some nannying and to help packaging the house a week after they were born. I don't have a medical liscence but I am certified in search and rescue/paramedic credentials(which included a hefty conversation/skills training with tons of pediatric nurses and doctors). Our area had loads of immigrant families with tons of kids. Being able to check reflexes we got him into the pediatrician's asap and they did his initial screening, installed a nasogastric tube, and ended up keeping them on formula until they could figure out what was wrong and schedule the surgeries needed. It goes without saying that the stress of the whole thing put my niece's production in the tank. We reported as many people as we could to moderators on the online forums and I had to console her that there's no reason to feel bad about formula feeding. Babies end up needing B vitamin supplements after 3 months because breast milk is low in those vitamins anyway. A fed baby is a happy baby and that is all that matters.

      Bottle-feeding contributes to underdeveloped jaws and/or crooked teeth (I can'tremember which), according to the famous orthodontist's videos by Mike Mew and his orthodontist dad John Mew, and dentist Felix Liao, orthodontist Sandra Kahn, dentist Steven Lin. They talk about it in their books. Also, watch the video interview of psychologist Darcia Narvaez and Brendon Marotta about breastfeeding, and how it promotes bonding. Body pleasure shouldn't be denied to kids, according to psychologists. Cultures which deny body pleasure to their babies (by denying breastfeeding, for example), create for adults who have antisocial personality disorder, which is a disorder characterized by violence. Psychologist Ronald Goldman's next book will be about this. Skin-on-skin contact is important. If a baby is deprived of skin-on-skin contact, they will grow into an adult with perhaps borderline personality disorder, where they don't know where they end and the outside world begins, and they cover their skin with tattoos in order to help themselves know where their physical body ends. They may seek out leather clothing, fur clothing, because they crave to touch skin. Or, they may wear very skimpy clothing to reveal their own skin. They may lay naked with another naked child just for the skin, according to psychologist Dr. Faye Snyder in her book The Handbook. She taught child development at a university in California. Dr. Judy Rosenberg said people with tattoos hadn't been touched in one of her videos on tattoos.

    WIC Nutritionist here (i work with infants and formula quite a bit and have a degree in nutrition and dietetics as well as am a certified lactation counselor hence my need to comment). I am all for educating on the risks of formula (its part of my job) but this guy seems like a douche who missed all the marks. The last thing I'm worried about in the formula is GMOs lol how about the fact that its based off an entirely different kind of protein than breast milk- cow or soy typically, which are drastically different. Also its missing a TON of HMOs for gut health which are linked to all kinds of long term health conditions. From an actually evidence-based perspective, there are well-researched risks of formula. It is very real. It is estimated that if 90% of infants breastfed for 6 months then thousands of babies lives would be saved. Thousands of hospitalizations would be avoided. Lower numbers of asthma, allergies, type 2 diabetes, cancer. So it is serious and I do think if you are going to make an informed choice about feeding your baby the concern is valid. We've learned from recent shortages and recalls that it is not sustainable for the majority of our infants to be reliant on this system of feeding. The reality is most women do have the ability to fully or very close to fully feed their infants milk for a year. The WHO recommendation is breastfeeding for 2 years and beyond (a far cry from our US culture today, sadly). Women get misinformation about breastfeeding and seeds of doubt are planted about their ability to make milk in pregnancy already and health care providers are quick to recommend formula shamelessly when nothing is wrong. Lactation support is so lacking. Breastfeeding is not the social norm and women don't have the info to know what is normal, how to stop it from being painful, how to know if they have enough milk. So of course many end up stopping! This is a HIGHLY complicated issue that he hasn't even BEGUN to approach appropriately. He is clearly uneducated on the issue as a whole so he shouldn't pretend to be a reliable source of info on this one. But I can tell you the least effective way to increase breastfeeding rates is to shame mothers who have already or are using formula. It's never effective and it has the opposite effect. As we can see here by everyone's reaction to this video.

Or even ignore mental side effects that it is causing the breastfeeder and lead to something tragic. I pumped way more than I ever should have, like I pumped hours a day to make maybe 4-5oz. and it was its own kind of hell. It didn't drive me to suicide or homocide, thankfully, but I think how much more sleep I could have gotten, how much time i could have just cuddled the baby if I wasn't so focused on pumping when I just wasn't able to produce enough...and yeah. I still had to primarily use formula. I didn't think anything was subpar about formula nor anything so great about breast milk yet I still did it.

    The point is for your child to *_thrive._* If they aren't, & a solution is available, but obstacles via pressures from religion/philosophy, traditions, expectations from family &/friends, even from those w/in the medical field, cause a parent to deny their child help, well, those things should take a back seat to your child's health & well-being. It encompasses all areas, too, be it diet, breast vs. bottle, discipline, education, medical care, who we allow access to our children, etc.
    It might seem an easy choice when one's child is at stake, but that's often just not the case. Burdening parents w/those pressures, rather than encouraging them to do whatever it is they need to do to have their child be healthy (even if it bucks the system, so to speak), is selfish & cruel.

    Addiction discourse is so sad sometimes, like, obviously your addiction to coffee that will leave you with a headache sucks but it does not suck nearly as bad as dying from alcohol detox. Instead of equating high fructose corn syrup to a physical addiction to opioids trying to scare parents, I wish he would do a video about how to stop someone from overdosing. OR, he could just stay in his lane, entirely skipping addiction discourse.

    Also, he is saying babies have somehow superior gut microbiome which isn’t true. Before birth the gut is basically sterile until the baby comes in contact with microbes in the birth canal and later on while breastfeeding/formula feeding/ eating solids. So basically their gut microbiome is very much underdeveloped compared to older humans, not somehow superior.

    He is 50/50 to me. The timing during a shortage was awful but formula is highly processed and companies most likely aren't sparing infants at expense of profits.
    TLDR at the end😊
    Highlighting other brands was a good call because the shortage hapened because Abbott basically had a monopoly. Formula could possibly be better but no competition means no incentive to change.
    Parish could do better research which is evident by the baby gut microbiome statement along with other statements he has made. But I still appreciate his videos. For example one of his videos was the first time I heard hexane was used to make some oils. Maybe hexane washed and bleached oil shouldnt be so widespread in our foods. I avoid conventional oils for that reason.
    Content creators in the food sphere are a symptom of a larger problem. Companies employ cruel and immoral tactics for profit. Governments allow additives known to be dangerous in our food. The average person doesnt have the ability to "do their own research" When there is little guidance or truth people fill the void.
    TLDR: I am still undecided on him personally. He makes mistakes but some of his content is helpful. I think both of you have your heart in the right place but between consumer confusion and corporate greed choosing what to eat is harder than it should be.

    I was born at 28 weeks without the ability to suckle. My mother nearly fucking died trying to breastfeed me as she was a diabetic and weak initially. She had to feed me every half an hour with a syringe after me being born nearly killed both of us. Formula saved my mother, gave her more than 15 minutes of sleep at a time, it gave her enough time to care for herself as well as me. Being a parent is hard, let people feed their babies and leave them alone. Quit making parents and especially new mothers feel like a failure because they’re just trying to keep their babies fed and happy.
