I wonder if it would be possible to engineer a plant to produce complete food without dying in the harvest. Technically, grapes and other vines and trees already do it but following his logic it's still their seeds so it would need to be some kind of nectar that just drips off of the plant. That'd be cool as hell!!

The segment about the plant aliens freaking out at vegans eating plants has to be one of the weirdest and worst points against veganism. How on earth is this man a serious, well respected intellectual?
People's brains always melt when it comes to veganism. Besides the inanity of the idea that plant aliens would be freaking out about us eating plants, why does he think the sexual reproductive parts of the plant exist? The flowers, the fruit, the vegetables? Does he think they grow and exist for the sheer wonder and joy of it? What does he think nectar and seeds are? How does he think almost all plants reproduce? Asexually? In a bubble uncontaminated by other creatures?
@@MarlaSingersCancer also the obvious point he missed that we always have to remind people. Based on energy transfer multiple times more plants need to be killed to eat meat than if you just eat plants directly. So the people eating animals are killing way more plants
Absolutely! At that point, I was waiting for his plot twist saying he's vegan himself and pointing out all the ridiculous arguments carnists make. With the plant aliens story he was basically describing how barbaric carnists are when they buy meat...seriously, how can he not see his hypocrisy!?
He isn't for anyone with actual discernment. He's just a scientiest that happens to be heavily promoted by the mainstream media, that's all. There's nothing even remotely remarkable about him. There's thousands of scientists far brighter and more accomplished than him, they just happen not to get the same exposure because exposure in media isn't determined by any real merit.
That's why I wouldn't call him an intellectual. A scientist, yes. And a good one. A communicator, also yes, very good at inspiring people and explaining science to the layman. But not an intellectual.

I’ve been vegan for 17 years and it still astonishes me how fast people are to completely dodge the argument. 5 years ago the “what about plants suffering” argument was the final Hail Mary last ditch effort. Now it’s the first thing people bring up because they don’t want to engage in any serious critical thinking at all.
"Vegan lifestyles cause the deaths of fewer plants than non-vegan lifestyles so if you cared about plants you'd go vegan" shuts that down really quickly.
How about other animals eating each other. A lion eating a gazelle alive is probably pretty painful. Why aren't vegans trying to stop this? Are all animals suffering not equal?
@Ben Lovegood I think the point is that since eating plants is still causing death and pain to plants, the vegans didn't really think this all the way through.
@@makeit784 Humans and lions are different animals. The motives and justifications for their actions are completely different. All life is equal. That doesn't mean all actions are justified. That's a false equivalence. Every vegan is aware that plants and fungi die. That's news to no one. And there is no conformation that plants feel pain, but, as I said, if they did, vegan lifestyles cause less death and pain of plants than non-vegan lifestyles, so that's an argument in favour of veganism no matter if their feeling pan is true or not.

I don't know for sure, but plants could be sentient. There is enough scientific evidence available today showing that, at the very least, plants have their own kind of nervous system. Disclaimer: This is not an anti-vegan comment. I am vegan.
@@alexp.s.4419 Calling it a nervous system is a big leap. There are very, very basic reactions in plants. I have spent hours and hours pouring into research papers trying to diaprove my own opinion on this and there is absolutely nothing in favour of plants being sentient.
@@welcomeback2mychannel I am no scientist, but depending on your initial reference for the definition and use of terms your conclusions will vary. If you take the human anatomical form as primary reference, the definitions become more restricted the more different the organism we are looking at is from humans. That, however, does not mean there aren't any equivalent aspects in both human and more different organisms. For example, if you take as initial reference the functions of a neuron, rather than its form, you will see that plants have aspects with the same functions as far as they have been observed and described by scientists (such as receiving stimuli from the environment, sending commands to bodily features in response to the stimuli, and transforming and relaying electrical signals).
It's like he spent all his time coming up with his thoughts about veganism without ever actually talking to a vegan. The way Neil frames it, he seems to think that all vegans will be dumbfounded when confronted by the genius of the "mice in the basement" argument.
The average life expectancy for a mouse in like great condition in a pet home is 2 years. A 2 year old mouse is considered elderly as fuck. I don't think a mouse in recorded history has ever reached 6 years.

Neil is so far off reality that he is unreachable. He can’t distinguish between a head of lettuce and a loving, beautiful, sentient animal with feelings and a functional brain.
As a comedian said. The most frightening thing about vegans is that what they say might be true. The way that some people try to justify animal flesh eating amazes me.
Couldn’t have said it better myself Ed! It’s so hard to listen to Neil talk about things he clearly hasn’t looked into. It is absolutely shocking to me he is talking about plant deaths without thinking about all the plants that get consumed by farmed animals. Just mind blowing to me

I can say my intuition was right and I'm not disappointed, but it's still painful to listen to so much ignorance from a guy that should be a role model of knowledge and wisdom.

I’ve been vegan for 17 years and it still astonishes me how fast people are to completely dodge the argument. 5 years ago the “what about plants suffering” argument was the final Hail Mary last ditch effort. Now it’s the first thing people bring up because they don’t want to engage in any serious critical thinking at all.
"Vegan lifestyles cause the deaths of fewer plants than non-vegan lifestyles so if you cared about plants you'd go vegan" shuts that down really quickly.
@@Ranger1812 Nice.

"Aliens though"
~Neil Degrass Tyson 2022
"It's mentioned in the bible!" ah shit, he got us there.
The bit about plant aliens is just incredible. Using his own special analogy just replace his plant aliens with a spaceship full of cows, imagine the horror that they'd find on Earth. What an absolute tool.
The only tool here is you and the rest of you vegans. We've hunted animals all throughout humanity. Our ancestors just eat it when can't you?
The most ridiculous thing about this argument (and there are so many, it's hard to choose) is that you literally don't have to use your imagination at all and come up with theories about aliens because animals are literally here for real and are experiencing it!
What would pigs or cows tell you if they could speak?
God, this guy is completely nuts.
Vegans: we should stop needlessly slaughting innocent, sentient beings
Neil: what if the world was made of pudding?
..and it was sentient
...and trapped in your basement.
....and was emotionally supported by sentient space pudding.
...and then aliens arrived on our planet and they were all spoons

Plants building spaceships! They can't even move!
Then they'd be classified as animals lol. If they did photosynthesis maybe they'd be classified as some weird hybrid in a class of their own, very far away from the plants we know. There actually are a few animals that can do photosynthesis after consuming the chloroplalsts of algae. They're still animals, they haven't become categorized as plants.
@@636theofthebeast8 yes good point. We all were once single cell creatures in the early days of the earth. If plants evolved somehow to be sentimental, they would not classfy themselves as the same plants as we know.
Also. Any creatures with a brain knows every animals need to eat other bio-forms to live. The point of veganism is not 'never kill life froms' but 'We can avoid killing sentimental animals for foods scientifically.'

The little mouse story cannot even compare to the atrocities that happen in slaughterhouses.
Industrial agriculture is a problem even if meat is removed from the equation. I grew up by farmland in South Carolina. When the farmers harvest their monocrops (corn/wheat/hay/cotton where I was) you see loads of mice running out of the fields and definitely not uncommon to see headless mice still running without their heads.
Also his point is that he believes plants are living organisms the same as animals. That he doesn't see one life as objectively different from another based on sentience. Not that I agree with him but you missed his actual point. He sees anything reproducing as living and life consumes life to continue on.

FACT: We grow far more crops to feed the billions of livestock annually than humans would consume directly as vegans. So going vegan = reduction of crop deaths.
If you truly advocate for this you would take your own advice. Or is it just an excuse to keep eating meat?
FACT: When a mouse hears and feels vibration of a noisy combine harvester they run as you confirm yourself "loads of mice running out of the fields" some get caught up and are accidentally killed
FACT: When a cows try to run from abatoirs workers knife across it's throat it is purposefully killed as they have nowhere to go.

@@cazzawazzadingdong5139 neither he nor I am saying we care about any of those things. Just that life is life regardless and life consumes life to continue living.
Vegan diets can be healthy with attention to variety and supplementation. If this is the natural way things should be not sure why supplementation of vitamins that are non existent or not found in bioavailable forms that our body has enzymes to efficiently use, like Vit B12, A, D3, K2, Choline, Omega 3 (ALA form in plant foods), as well as the carnanutrients Biotin, Creatine, Carnatine, Carnosine, Anserine, and Taurine.
Omnivorous diets have more of a climate impact because of industrial agriculture. There are regenerative animal agriculture farms that have net zero or net negative carbon emissions. Definitely not advocating for our food systems should remain as is. I think most commercial restaurants should be eliminated as we throw away almost as much food as we produce as well as I believe eating meat should require eating the whole animal and not just our favourite cuts that the modern world has allowed as practice.
Forget the slaughterhouse. What about mice in laboratories!?

If you take the human anatomical form as primary reference, the definitions become more restricted the more different the organism we are looking at is from humans.
