- In this video I take you through a fast-paced step-by-step tutorial for removing and replacing the thermostat housing on a Chevrolet Sonic. A faulty thermostat housing will usually result in a coolant leak and will sometimes be accompanied by a P0128, P0597 or a P0599 code (check engine light). This video will be able to help anyone with a GM car with a naturally aspirated 1.8 ecotec engine from model years (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016).
The coolant pipe that exits the top of the thermostat is prone to becoming brittle and breaking on removal. The Chevrolet part number is 25192905 and is referred to as (S) Pipe in the Chevrolet part catalog. The suggested retail cost of this part is $38.99.
I always perform repairs according the factory service manual. You need to have all the information (toque specs, testing procedures and schematics) to insure you've pinpointed the actual problem and to insure your vehicle is safe after you've completed your repairs. The tools I use in this video are (In the order they appear): Electric impact driver, 13mm socket, T20 Torx bit, pocket screwdriver, scrap piece of hose, 13mm wrench, plastic drain pan, 1/4" flex-head ratchet, 10mm socket, remote hose clamp pliers, 3/8" flex-head ratchet, T10 external Torx socket, brake parts cleaner, utility razor blade, 3/8" torque wrench (In/lbs), spill-free coolant funnel, and a scan tool.
The part I installed in this video is an AC Delco Coolant Thermostat Housing with part number 15-81816.

This video is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I also found an online manual indicating that the thermostat housing mounting bolts are torqued in a criss-cross pattern to 18 in-lbs on the first pass, then 71 in-lbs on the 2nd pass. Note that's in "inch" pounds, not ft-lbs ;)

dealership service is 50-75% of a dealers revenue, of course they are going to rip you off in every way, shape, or form. Never let a dealer service your car if you have another option unless it's 100% covered under warranty. Even if it's under warranty, more than likely, there is a high chance they are going to break your car further on purpose to represent other warrant-able claims in the future to do even more warranty repairs, because you are the sucker that keeps coming back and bringing in dough for them.
After seeing this video I took on the project myself and got it done properly without any further issues , and I saved a shit load of money. Every time I go to the dealership these cocksuckers try to rip me off , you ain't lying. Thanks for your advice bro , I appreciate it.

I’m getting ready to do 09 Aveo after buying new thermostat any putting on the problem wasn’t fixed as they sold me a faulty thermostat when taking it off to take it back the housing broke ( plastic part) told me it was notorious for breaking. Anyway wish me luck never changed on and hopefully it doesn’t break as it’s $249 . Thanks for video

Helpful video. I was wondering if there was a o ring on the bottom metal pipe the one with 2 screws. Looks like there’s not a gasket some I’m gonna roll with that.

Easiest way is to call your local dealership and see if your car is still under warranty. Good to go! If not... You need a new car...

Thank you. This was helpful. However, when I replaced mine the metal tube below the thermostat that goes left across the manifold fell off. I had to guide it back into the hole using a mirror. What is it and why isn't it bolted on the other end? Thanks.
You know I have no idea why it's not bolted on the other side. Maybe to save money on fasteners? That tube carries coolant to some emissions equipment but i'm not going to lie to you I'm not sure what it is.

The aluminum tube under the thermostat that runs left toward the engine is the oil cooler tube. The plastic pipe on the top of the thermostat housing (that breaks frequently) is the throttle body heater inlet pipe. It circulates coolant to the throttle body to maintain a temp optimal for emissions
Don't make all that effort to put another piece of cheap plastic that will break again. Walmart sells an aluminium housing. Use that housing and the Chevy Volt (Cadillac ELS) thermostat that run cooler. With this upgrade, your Chevy Cruze, Sonic or any European designed GM will run more years than any Japanese import.
I agree! I changed my thermostat and whilst tightening it to the housing the plastic housing cracked and is now leaking. Now have to go back and replace the housing but most definitely will get the aluminum housing
@@MrPrepd4u83 please, not only change the thermostat housing, change the thermostat inside the housing and use one from a Cadillac ELS or Chevrolet Volt. Be very careful twisting and taking out the thermostat because temperature sensor inside is very delicate. Aftermarket thermostat for Cruze, Sonic, Trax and all of GM Family engine, use to get stock or freezed. Water systems in this cars are a nightmare.

Yes. Because it is an electronically controlled thermostat the thermostat is built into the assembly.

Garret Seesing sorry but 71 is way crazy too high. Aluminum bolts and housing, I tried 71 and snapped a bolt in two. I’ve hear 7 or 8 and even 18 but no where near 71

is there a part number on the seal from that little pipe (the lower one) that gets screwed in. I took my wife's off today, and there was an o-ring type thing in it, and it was trashed. Going to clean up the old surface so the new gasket can make a proper seal on the new housing.
That god damn s pipe. That part can be purchased from O Reilly's as well if needed for (at this time) $35.99

Hi, stumbled upon this video because i just took my car to a shop due to my A/C not working, my GF’s poor 2014 chevy sonic has a plethora of issues & it was giving them like major 4 error codes, 2 were fixed from them replacing a torn whose and then they fixed a leak in the A/C, but then they found the thermostat is sticking open/closed intermittently & temp sensor is leaking. Im already $800 in the hole, so before im in another $400 i want to attempt to replace the temp sensor & housing cus i found a good deal on one, any advice on if this could be the root cause of what causing my Engine Coolant light to be turning on constantly?

I believe the part is designed without a gasket/seal. Sort of like a double flare on a brake line. Either that or it has an internal seal that comes installed on the new part.
In case you're still interested. It does have a seal, that should be replaced, I first went with his comment and just left it like that, but it started leaking, here's the part number for the seal: 25194222
Does the code light remove it self?
Unfortunately no. It's best to reset it with an OBD2 scanner. Most autoparts stores will do it for free. Otherwise you can disconnect the battery for 5 minutes and the code will be erased.
I never got a code on my 2014. I knew I had a very small coolant leak somewhere. It was discovered thankfully when I went to have a tune-up done!
I’m getting a P00B6 code for the “coolant temperature sensor” I ordered what seems to be just the thermostat, not the entire housing. Any idea if this will be ok or would the entire housing need replacing? Thanks again for the video!!
Unfortunately you won't really know until you get the whole thing apart. Normally the housing fails before the thermostat resulting in an engine temperature code. However it would be wise to check your radiator temp sensor with a scan tool. That code means that there is a large difference between the engine temp and the radiator temp. Good luck!

Good evening, I have a 2012 chevrolet aveo and the radiaror fan works and stops all the time. I changed the thermostat I changed the water pump I changed the water cooler. I noticed that after the thermostat the collar is always cold while the rest is hot. An engineer who went to the car told me that I had to put in the original thermostat and change the collar from the water bucket to the end of a plastic valve. because there is no ventilation .. the temperature light has not come on. Can you help me if I change the thermostat to genuine will solve the problem

I just replaced the thermostat housing on my 2013 Sonic and have a leak from what I believe is the (S) Pipe. Can you confirm that the piece with the green dot on the plastic tip is what you are referring to as the (S) Pipe? 5:53 of this video shows you re-connecting this part.
Yes indeed that is what I am reattaching at that point in the video. While (S) pipe is a weird name for that part (thanks general motors) it is very prone to leaking, especially after replacing the thermostat housing. Good luck!

My 2015 Chevy sonic radiator fan don’t work would this be my problem I checked my relay and when I push them in very hard the fan comes on but goes off and never come back on unless I push the fan relays in hard ?? What that mean

because the housing itself is made of plastic, it is prone to cracking. You'll notice the new housing will be an updated part with metal reinforcements. cheers

Hi , is there a rubber gasket that the tube at (3:42) fits into the thermostat housing ? I thought I seen other videos that said keep that gasket to use in new part. I see you didn't have one.
I believe the part I installed had an internal gasket already installed.

Ok I just replaced a thermostats housing lien this one in a 2011 Aveo and the aluminum piping under the thermostat housing that has the torx bit screws is leaking under the exhaust manifold ????

I know nothing about cars. I have a 2016 Chevy Sonic 1.4 LT. Would the process be the same if I'm doing it by myself? also, can you write out a play by play? With the angle changes, I wasn't able to comprehend 100% but I don't want to pay $600 to have it fixed. Last thing, your license plate is in Texas; I'm in Dallas, if you're close enough, could I pay you instead to teach me how to change it?
At 3:50 you removed the silver pipe that I believe goes to the head gasket from the thermostat. Is there a gasket or o ring that should be on there? Mine is leaking at that connection.

It's not too bad. It's easiest if you take pictures of how it's routed first. I like to break the old part to make it easier to remove. Then take your time snaking the new part under all the rails and harnesses. It tedious but not difficult. Good luck!

My mechanic changed this twice with a housing that is all aluminum made in Asia. It works for a month or so & then it leaks again, same spot as b4 with the original GM housing. I noticed the original one is made of plastic. I read that the aluminum one will last longer, so we went with it. My original GM plastic housing leaked & eventually cracked. I would think that if the part was defective it may happen once, but not twice. He charged me $310 for the work & it still leaks. Could it be leaking from another part near the housing & seem like it is leaking from the housing itself. Any suggestion?

I just swapped out my thermostat and Intake throttle/thermostat hose since I had a coolant leak. It was coming from thermostat.
So I was pretty careful swapping out the thermostat but the oil cooler pipe did move a bit BUT ssemed to me like it was still in the other pipe. Go to add coolant and it starts dumping out right where the oil cooler pipe is inserted. I pulled the whole oil.cooler.pipe out and the o ring on outside does look a little rough.
Simple as swapping out this o ring and reseating the oil cooler pipe? I don't think there would be another reason for a leak here.
Anyone can help or has done this let me know please. Appreciate it.

Did u make sure u plugged the wire harness back.if wire harness is not plugged to your sensor or anything else then your car will not start.

Not entirely. While the 2009 1.6 and 1.8 engines are similar, the thermostat and housing are different. However, most of the process will be the same. Good luck!
