      sure they sound cute, and maybe she can make the most of a shitty situation by looking at them this way. but tourette syndrome is absolutely miserable. I have attacks that start with my face and neck, violently, painfully, and spread until my entire body convulses with tics. my teeth have been ground flat and always ache. My eyes and head ache from constantly stretching them to their left-right extremes. No pills have helped in my ten years of hospitalizations and doctor visits, of whom i have come to know more than any normal person should. Heck, my neighbors would have nowhere to park if I invited all my doctors for dinner one night.

      Jman 1975 It basically goes like this. If you accept it, you're cool, but if you can't, you most likely won't be in my life. You can either be accepting and open-minded or I'll move on and talk to someone else. I don't mind if people don't understand as long as they're willing to learn though.

      Bless your heart. ❤ you do exhibit a wide range of tics..but you are not offensive. You seem to have a good hand on it. Oh no, when you said the F word, you could feel it in your mind that it was truly very spontaneous. Not planned out. Anyway, thanks for sharing this. I’m an “old” nurse and have heard many cases of Tourette’s, you have explained several things I had not thought of. I just wish this video was not 7 years ago. Well, carry on with your life… ice to meet you

    Thank you so much for using your bravery, your voice and your vulnerability to educate others. The most important take away for me is to be mindful of my reaction to someone affected by Tourette’s and help normalize their experience by engaging with them as I would any other human being, looking beyond the tics. It’s helpful to see how the various tics can manifest in conversation. Thank you for your courage!

    You did a wonderful job of a public awareness video! I think it's great it was an unedited too. You show bravery and poise in describing a condition that is not well known and debunking the myths! Right on! I have had those breathing type ticks I don't know what you would call them as I mentioned a minute ago to you since I was a kid with the chicken wing arm flapping... But that went away. Never sought treatment for it but I think a lot of people don't understand anything about this condition so kudos for putting it out there! Great job!

    I am so glad you educated me on how it REALLY works. Also, not to feed onto any stereotypes but have you thought about getting padded gloves for all your physical tics? I see other Tourette-afflicted people use them and it helps them immensely. If you do already, ignore that and know you've educated someone with a reality and not a myth. Thank you and I hope you have a bearable life and I hope you never have any tic induced seizures or any of that.

    These were helpful myths to know about, I think most people do misunderstand this condition. Particularly, where these words come from and if they are associated with actual thoughts. I've seen some people with such severe coprolalia that even their family members question how authentic some of their ticks are.

    I don't have tourettes but I do have breathing spasms like you do. I was just wondering if they get stressful for you because I know they do for me. my breathing spasms started after a concussion I got after I was beat up really bad when I was 13.

    • @snappleandcats8045
      @snappleandcats8045  7 років тому +63

      Caci Konrad My tics aren't actually stressful all the time like they used to be, but they DEFINITELY can be. Especially breathing tics. I consider not being able to breathe one of the most unpleasant feelings I've ever known. Thankfully, my breath holding tics are extremely rare now, but I still have breathing tics which can also get stressful and frustrating after a while.
      Also, it really sucks that people in this world would do that to a 13 year old.

    • @youreapowerpuffgirlharry7506
      @youreapowerpuffgirlharry7506 6 років тому +11

      My breathing spasms started about two years ago. I'm 12 and it's developed from exhailing randomly to giggling under my breath uncontrollably. My parents call this a "habit" so I don't really know if it's tourettes. I used to have some really weird habits, like spitting out my saliva and rubbing it into the carpet at my house because I didn't want to swallow it. That lasted about 2 years and we had to wash the carpets about every month until my parents had enough and removed the carpets all together. Thankfully it's stopped and I can peacefully swallow my saliva. I also used to randomly shout "YEEHA!" like a cow girl when I was 10. That only lasted about 3 months before it stopped and I started giggling under my breath at random. It annoys me because everyone around me notices it and asks me "what's so funny" or "why are you laughing". I also grunt and sometimes it can hurt my throat because I've... what's the word... grunted (?) until it turned raw.

    I will admit that I believed that swearing was a natural part of Tourette"s so it's interesting to get the myths out of the way. I also like the way she described tics when she was on The Employables: that they're like sneezes that you can't hold in or are really hard to if you tried.

      We have a girl like that in our school. This might come off as offensive, but I’m trying to depict my experience as truthfully as possible. I’m also aware that I most likely am not qualified to talk about tourettes.
      At first, at least for me, finding out and getting used to her tics was the strangest part. But then after months of being acquainted with her tics (you can sometimes hear her down the hall during classes), it becomes part of your school life. I’m sure the teachers also feel similarly, especially since everyone knows how obtrusive it can get in her life. Also, high school teachers at least don’t give a shit about high schoolers swearing, except for the occasional new-female-teacher-coming-from-middle-school. But then again, I don’t think they would get mad over something literally nobody can control. It’s not annoying in the slightest once you get used to it.

I think your very pretty and I think its amazing that you made this video to try to inform people about living with tourettes. Your awesome!

    What is really sad is I had a friend with TS (now no longer a friend for other reasons) who did not have verbal tics, just physical and squeaking, who used his condition as an excuse to swear at people.

    To have this condition and be able to live with it and educate others about it is a major accomplishment in itself. Thoughts are with you and your future. Stay strong and drive on young lady.
    I personally believe God made us all unique and has set a plan for us all as well.
    Its what we do with those plans that will determine our future here and elsewhere.
    Again stay strong young lady.... God Bless you.

    How does the brain "decide" to swear. What's the science behind it? Why swear words?

    • @leoortiz5914
      @leoortiz5914 6 років тому +34

      123alias it's not just swear words tho and it triggers a nerve in your body to say it, hopefully I'm not wrong, I try

      123alias when you have tourettes you pick up words from other people.
      You cannot control these and its all to do with a nerve in your brain.
      So practically its not just swear words its words that you have picked up and gotten used to saying them

      123alias swear words are actually not stored in the same place as other words in the brain. Same reason why people often swear inadvertently whenever they get hurt. With a simple google search of "where are swear word stored in the brain," you can find out more :)

      I heard that some people think it has to do with a part of the brain (I don't remember which) that deals with impulse regulation being a bit out of whack. Or something similar.

    Snapple and Cats! .. You're amazing!
    I wish I could have seen a video like this when I was younger. I grew up in the UK with Tourettes, but never knew what it was and just thought I was a freak. I heard every reason from others for why I kept twitching and making noises and other stuff .. from sitting too close to the TV to being possessed by the devil (no joke). I only found out about Tourettes when I was in my 20s and it was quite a relief. It always feels good seeing others with Tourettes talking about it. Thank you!
    I'm sure many others feel the same way!

      Kashif کاشف wow that sounds tough. Idk what I would do if I had literally no idea what was going on. My sister had a breathing tic and I'd seen a couple of letstalktics' (though her channel is deleted now) videos because of her sensory processing disorder, so I was a bit confused, but I had an idea of what was happening at least. Still, it was relieving to finally get a diagnosis and have it on paper.

      siti hassan Your true friends will accept you whether you're ticcing or not. People who don't aren't real friends and you don't need them in your life. 99% of people are totally accepting once I've educated them anyways and that's sort of the secret. I'm not more brave or inspiring or beautiful, etc., than you. I'm just a normal person and educating people about my condition is my everyday reality because it's what I need to do to get through life. My Tourette's is still severe and I still have a hard time with it sometimes. My faith and my friends and family keep me going and they can do the same for you. Please don't put me on a pedestal or think I'm doing anything you can't. You're as brave and beautiful and inspiring as I am. :)

    Hi! First of all, The forest behind you is beautiful. Ty for making this video. I did learn some things like that just bc someone with Tourette's is swearing doesn't mean that they're angry which I'll admit I thought that sometimes when they would swear that it was from anger. It's also interesting that when you bang your wrist against your chest that that doesn't hurt you just makes a loud sound. I found out what the brace is for on your wrist and arm. I Love your videos, keep making them and doing what you like and screw anyone else who doesn't approve. Keep fighting! 💗💜💙

    Probably the best info vid on tourette's that I've seen. Most (especially when done by docu-companies and not individuals) seem to be done more to entertain those without the syndrome than to actually inform and make aware of this syndrome.
    The girl in this vid does an amazing job.
    And for those calling the tics adorable. I could be a lot harsher towards these people but I get what they mean. Shes a pretty kid, intelligent and says these random words in such a cute voice. But then you need to go back and listen to how she has no control, and having no control over what you say be the word a swear or just a random word must get f**king exhausting and tiresome for her. Anything but cute.
    But as I said before. Amazing video to inform on tourette's syndrome.
