While the parallels with Clancy's novel and the Hollywood film are obvious and clearly inspired the writer, notable that in real life mutineer was not out to defect to the West, rather he was what he saw as a 'true Communist'. Ironic too that in the book and film (as played by Peter Firth), the political officer needs to be eliminated, not as in real life, became later the anti party rebel!
Obviously, the real story of a dedicated communist revolutionary didn't "inspire" Tom Clancy's anticommunist version. A U.S. Navy official even interrogated Clancy about how he had such detailed knowledge of Russian submarines (according to the chairman of my electronics department, whose political views were right wing). Of course, the CIA for whom Clancy wrote the book couldn't tell the Navy that they had given Clancy inside information to make the book realistic.
So the radio man betrayed the original revolution of 1917. Nice.
