Among so many concerts that sound like the trivial version of the sound of greater composers' works, this concert has got some fresh oddities which make it original, lovely and worthwhile listening to.

Again a gain this posting. Carl Loewe was a composer who deserved far more publicity!

Besides being a singer and conductor he was also a heckuva pianist. He was the soloist in the premiere of this concerto, and played 2nd piano in a performance of Mendelssohn's 2nd 2-piano Concerto (the one in A-flat) in 1827, with the composer playing 1st piano.

Good piece. When this was written most concerti were to show off the personal style of the composer/pianist. This succeed well. Loewe was incredibly popular and did quite well as singer, pianist and conductor and composer. He was especially favored by several royal courts- Sweden, Norway, and when in England Prince Albert was his page turner. For the ballads it helps to know German- the texts and musical effects a single unit. The ballad format that Schubert also liked, is a type of lieder that tells a complete story and this is where Loewe truly excels. His ability to change a mood or express intense feeling with one or two words is truly amazing. Thanks for posting.

Very good concerto. Some of the first movement reminds me of William Sterndale Bennett. I really like the slow movement with its very lyrical melodies. The last movement really goes out with a big, dramatic sound.

A long time ago, I used to buy Penguin books simply because Penguin only published well written and groundbreaking books. I feel that you're rather like that with lesser known Classical and Romantic composers. Thank you

Carl Loewe is known only as a writer of ballads for voice and piano, a work in which he excelled - this has to be recognized here: the ballads of Carl Loewe should be better known and more often sung. . But his skills in composition are more large than that. Here, we have his excellent second concerto for piano. The dialog between the soloist and the orchestra is well balanced. All is beautiful in that concerto, but the central slow movement is particularly moving. The part of the soloist is not so virtuoso - much less demanding, for instance, than a Beethoven's concerto. This concerto would deserve to be better known and played in our concert halls. The same applies to the first concerto for piano and to his two beautiful symphonies.

@Gérard Begni What do you know about Loewe's "first" Piano Concerto? As far as I know, it got completely lost in World War II

This concerto certainly has its moments, and serves well as a vehicle for virtuosic display. The work generally lacks the gravitas and sophisticated singing style of Beethoven and Mozart and goes its own way, even though it remains clearly in the Neoclassical tradition. Its "Spanish" movement, though not particularly Spanish in character, exudes an infectious charm and recalls the still emergent romantic fascination with national color and exoticism. All in all a very effective work which, though not profound, makes for a most entertaining half hour of listening. Loewe is definitely a composer worth getting to know better.

      saludos

Please watch this at the lowest quality only (144p) since it's just for the music, which is much more ecologically responsible than at a higher rate. Watching this at 240p (which is unnecessary for listening purposes), will increase the bandwith by double to almost tenfold! At 1080 the bandwith is augmented by a factor of 100!

Let's enjoy this beautiful music by being aware and responsible, doing our little part in decreasing our carbon footprint and protecting this wonderful planet for the generations to come.

Why repertoires do not include these composers who are good in their own right, instead of driving us crazy always with the same repertoires all over the world ????? I know that Mozart, Beethoven, Grieg, Chopin, Schumann etc etc wrote wonderful concertos, but they are so widely and permanently played that we will end up by hating them!!!!!! Repertoires should be interspersed with other composers´ works who also wrote important things like Czerny, Hummel, Moskowsky, and thousands of others who are never played and are practically unkown !!!!!!

I respect your vision, but I do not share it. The thematic is not redundant, there are two themes, which are not deveoped too much. The second movement is even based on a main theme, which occurs many tmes.
