I would never have paid nearly £30 for two minor works by Schumann. I bought the disk instead for the Burgmuller Piano Concerto in F sharp minor.
I had earlier downloaded this by chance from UA-cam in a job lot of early 19th century piano concertos. I was interested in Cramer and Czerny, and so almost didn't bother with the unknown Burgmuller. What a loss that would have been! From its opening harmonies, I listened to the work with complete astonishment. It has a vast, symphonic structure. It avoids the showy cadenza writing common to its age in favour of a close integraton of piano and orchestra. It is an intense and dramatic and completely satisfying work.
It owes something to Beethoven PC5, and something to Mendelssohn, but is much more than an imitation. For its piano writing, I would almost call it - if I were now less imprressed than I am by Burgmuller himself - the piano concerto that Schubert never composed. Whatever its influences, I am ready to think it one of the greatest piano concertos of the 19th century. And it is by an 18 year-old student - a young man who died at the lamentably early age of 26, apparently by drowning when he had an epileptic fit while taking a bath.
Why is this work not in the standard repertoire?
I bought the disk partly because I wanted a better version than the lowish resolution mp3 I downloaded from UA-cam, and partly because I wanted to give some financial token of my appreciation. I can't reward Burgmuller, but I can reward those who brought me his music. At £27, I think the contribution worth every penny.

my son died in the same age from the same sickness as Burgsmüller. About 35 years before I have discovered Burgsmüller for me.
The best you can do is champion his works. I support as a music researcher the more obscure ensembles and historical performance of works. This is easily a big contender for my next purchase.

Back in his days Norbert Burgmüller was not obscure. Robert Schumann said: after Schubert's early death, no other early death than the one of Burgmüller (at the age of 26) was as painful.

Definitely not the Burgmuller you're thinking of. The guy who wrote the etudes only ever wrote works good enough for education, and even then, there are better things to learn from.

A friend of mine, who used to host a classical music program on a local FM station in Albuquerque, played the Leonard Hokanson/Schmalfuss/Wuppertal recording of this work on the air many years ago after I introduced him to it. He told me that no other recording had ever aroused as much excitement among listeners. The station was immediately besieged with telephone calls.

I hear a little bit of Schumann in this concerto but not much of Beethoven. Mostly I think it is the unique genius of Burgmuller!

Burgmuller was a student of Louis Spohr. Thus we hear more similarities to Spohr then to other composers. His first symphony clearly shows similarities to to Spohr's music.
Absolutely! Not only in style, Beethoven´s influence is present throughout the work. Perhaps more than any other composer, although in some passages it reminds me of Mendelssohn and Schubert.

Bellissimo! The classic forms formed a basis for him, which he varied and developed further, his works point far into the future - his early death prevented him from developing all his potential.
I hear more influences of his friend Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. A great lost that he died so young. The works he left are all great!
Now that you mention it I hear the Mendelssohn as well.
Not only died young and tragically but his life has been mostly miserable and influenced by health issues (epilepsy and alcoholism latter generated by the breakup of his engagement and subsequent early death of his fiancee). And yes you hear Mendelssohn and Spohr and Schumann but his style is extremely personal and not merely copy and paste of other masters. Besides he wrote piano concerto at less than 20 years but it stands out for a mature writing and robust technique. Another one died too young who could have counted more in history of music had he lived more.

Séduisant concerto d'un musicien prometteur, qui n'a pas eu la chance de donner sa pleine mesure... Tout à fait remarquable... Il avait son style de mélodies bien à lui, qu'il n'a guère eu le temps d'épanouir et d'épurer, par malchance. Avec sous l'exubérance une faille, une mélancolie, une blessure sourdement et constamment présente... Musique plus profonde qu'il n'y paraîtrait à une audition distraite... Le larghetto est fort réussi, le compositeur sentait avec émotion les mouvements lents... Une musique simple, inventive, sincère et sans esbroufe...
Cette musique ne me semble pas si simple que ça . Un grand compositeur ,inventif, c'est vrai ! Je pense que cette oeuvre est même plus complexe que celle de Chopin, quand ce dernier avait le MEME AGE que lui . ( concertos pour piano )

I don't think we should necessarily think we were limited in the past since we couldn't hear these lesser known treasure of piano concertos before. UA-cam, is definitely contributing to that, but isn't the internet as a whole contributing to more information we never knew before. I don't blame myself only for knowing what was on the classic music radio channel and available at the CD music store when I was young. I was born before the internet existed. I am not in my 40 or 50's, but in my 30's. No at 30, I don't find it is a special treasure to find these on the internet. I don't owe the world that I should have known this musical piece. It was never made available to me at the time.

Burgmuller's early death was a tragic loss to music. The foreboding brass and woodwind introduction and dramatic keyboard writing in this concerto foreshadows the work of Brahms of whom I'm sure Burgmuller would have been equal to had he lived longer into the 19th century.

This woek is indeed outstanding for an op. 1 dated 1829. It sounds just as if the young Wagner had decided to write a piano concerto sometimes between the Flying Dutchmann and Tannhauser or Lohenfrin, with forerunning sections.

I don't think Wagner really understood writing for concertos or for most musical sections aside from his ego. As a musicologist I think this is one of the last classical concertos but the first true romantic concerto which almost completely loses form.
@@ernshaw78 Needless to ay I am fully aware of this concerning Wagner's personal ego. This is only a stylistic analogy. You can find here the same chromatic parrallel motions of diminished seventh's than in Flying Dutchman's overture, or access to passing remote harmonic regions through parallel chromatic thirds movament as for instancr in Tannhauser's overture (violas+clarinets) between the two presentations (wind sextet then trombones) of the Pilgrim's chorale. The major difference id that was was put deliberately forward in Wagner's music is more integrated here, which evidences a subtle musical maturity as soon as in this op. 1
I think the best for appreciate this score is certainly not compare with any renowned composer , just with himself and his very good ideas and professionalism

Every pianist would have encountered Burgmuller as a young student. His larger works, sadly, go almost unrecognised and unacknowledged.
You are referring to Friedrich Burgmüller. This concerto was composed by his younger brother Norbert.

Written when he was 19 year old, and fully original. Lots of influences, or rather ideas coming from the Zeitgeist, but definitely a personal style: this is not Beethoven, nor Ries, nor Hummel. I could hear some tones of Schumann and Berwald.

I hated piano practice. I can pick out a melody if it not two complex years later but thus cannot play because of my resistance to practice and probably because of limited physical prowess as well . However, I have long loved piano concertos. The Romantic Concerto series of a couple labels expanded my range of piano concertos over the years. UA-cam is expanding it even more. I was so deprived growing up being limited to Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Saint-Saens, etc. Burgmuller's work here meets everything I appreciate about this specialized music genre.
Have you tried Joseph Marx' Romantic Concerto of 1920? Extremely accessible and I would say compares very comfortably indeed with the concertos of Saint-Saëns, Chopin, Schumann and Poulenc.
I would suggest Adolf Wiklund's Concerto No. 1.
At least burgmuller had a distinctive style, in his solo pieces as well. Unlike many other romantic concertos where they all sound like pastiche from the greats. Except for 11:45 which is Beethoven appassionata, 3rd movement

While this genius was taken away too soon, I take comfort in the fact that we have this beautiful piece that is now part of music history. Going to hold this one close, as form of remembrance for those who weren't given the opportunity to share their gifts with the world.

Amazing Piano concerto. Its language is so different from other romantic composers.
This is late classical. The instrumentation and analysis of the part writing is similar to Lessel, Sterkel, late Mozart, and Hummel. Very late classical. Musicology today cuts the classical period at 1835. The system he used was no doubt inspired from the other late classical composers. Having studied under Kreutzer and Sphor....this man was well primed to be a top composer.

@@ernshaw78 Are you one of those musical conservatives who does not accept any composers as Romantic before Schumann? I am the exact opposite. I put the beginning of the Romantic period in music as about 1800 with Dussek, Beethoven, and Field. This concerto is most certainly early Romanitic with a capital R. Beethoven himselt composed three Romantic piano concertos. Do you seriously believe what you wrote or are you just being provocative?
@@brianknapp8645 I totally agree with you. The first movement is definitely Romantic in brooding melody, harmony, and orchestration. The absence of the ornamental style of Mozart, Chopin and the virtuoso contemporaries of Chopin (Kalkbrenner, Moscheles, etc.) makes me think that Bergmuller's style has more in common with the integrative approach of Brahms, in my non-musicologist, amateur opinion.

August Joseph Norbert Burgmüller (Düsseldorf, 8 février 1810 - Aix-la-Chapelle, 7 mai 1836) est un compositeur et pianiste prussien très prometteur dont la vie et l’œuvre connurent une fin brutale.
Longtemps oubliée, sa musique suscite à partir des années 1980 un nouvel intérêt auprès des musiciens et des musicologues1. Elle comprend entre autres deux symphonies, quatre quatuors à cordes et un concerto pour piano.
Sa vie
Son père, Friedrich August Burgmüller (de), pourvu d’un talent considérablement inférieur au sien, avait fait de la musique sa profession et était parvenu à décrocher la fonction honorable de directeur de musique à Düsseldorf en 1821. Sous sa tutelle, Norbert entama la pratique du piano et du violon. Mais ce même père, de caractère plutôt irresponsable, était bien trop absent pour transmettre son savoir de façon systématique à ses trois enfants ; ainsi, à sa mort, en 1824, Norbert se sentit perdu, en manque flagrant de bagage culturel et de solides bases musicales. Cette triste situation fut de courte durée, car le généreux comte Franz von Nesselrode-Ehreshoven décida de se charger de l’éducation du jeune garçon en tant que mécène, et l’envoya poursuivre ses études à Cassel2.
Dans cette ville, Burgmüller suivit, en dehors de son instruction générale, des cours intensifs de composition chez deux professeurs renommés : Moritz Hauptmann et Louis Spohr. De 1826 à 1831, il fit d’étonnants progrès en théorie, continua également l’exercice de ses instruments, fréquenta le milieu artistique et participa régulièrement à des concerts en tant que soliste ou chef d'orchestre/chœur. Lors d’une de ces soirées, en janvier 1830, il exécuta son Concerto pour piano op. 1.
L’échec de ses fiançailles avec la diva Sophie Roland pour des raisons inconnues, enclencha une dépression violente chez lui durant laquelle l’abus d’alcool et des attaques d’épilepsie se présentaient sous forme de leitmotivs. La réputation d’ivrogne qu’il s’était construite ne plut guère à Spohr, qui abandonna son élève aussitôt. L’inconsolable Burgmüller retourna à Düsseldorf pour y enseigner à son tour, et entreprit la direction d’un petit ensemble instrumental constitué d’amateurs, peut-être avec l’espoir d’attirer l’attention pour obtenir une position importante et permanente dans sa ville natale.
En 1834, Burgmüller rencontra le compositeur Felix Mendelssohn et lui exprima toute son admiration. Cette rencontre fut certainement un moment de bonheur dans sa courte existence. Sans grande prétention, il présenta à Mendelssohn son premier opus. Ce dernier s’étonna du talent prodigieux de son cadet et éprouva dès cet instant un profond respect pour celui-ci. Un sentiment qu’il confirma en jouant son concerto en mai.
Après le départ de Mendelssohn, en 1835, l’écrivain Christian Dietrich Grabbe, avec lequel Burgmüller entretenait des relations amicales, s’inséra dans la vie quotidienne du compositeur. Ils passèrent souvent leurs temps ensemble dans la taverne Zum Drachenfels, où l’idée d’une collaboration pour la réalisation d’un opéra parodiant les conventions du genre naquit. Burgmüller enterra ce projet assez vite, car il était assez lucide pour comprendre qu’aucun établissement n’accepterait la production d’une composition pareille3.
Cette même année, il fit la connaissance de Joséphine Collin, la gouvernante des enfants du comte Nesselrode-Ehreshoven ; ce fut le coup de foudre. Burgmüller projetait de s’installer à Paris avec sa bien-aimée. Non seulement Paris lui donnerait la possibilité de pratiquer la langue activement, mais en plus il y retrouverait son frère Friedrich, pédagogue apprécié dans la capitale française, qui l’aiderait à s’introduire dans la haute société. Ce souhait ne se réalisera pas. En mai 1836, il se noya à la suite d'une crise d’épilepsie en prenant les bains à Aix-la-Chapelle. Il est inhumé au cimetière du Nord de Düsseldorf.
Dans sa Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, Robert Schumann rendit honneur à Burgmüller en parlant de « la plus grande perte dans le monde musical depuis la mort de Schubert »4. À sa mémoire, Mendelssohn écrivit sa Marche funèbre op. 1035.

L’héritage musical que nous a laissé Burgmüller surprend l’auditeur et l’analyste par sa grande qualité et son curieux développement.
Le Concerto pour piano op. 1 anticipe celui de Brahms d’un point de vue technique. L’expansion de l’introduction orchestrale et le traitement des motifs mélodiques annoncent le renouveau significatif du sens de la forme et du travail thématique après Beethoven. À cette originalité s’ajoute le choix excentrique de la tonalité de fa dièse mineur, tonalité expressive rarement utilisée pour ce genre instrumental6, mais qui avait été utilisée par Haydn dans la « Symphonie des adieux ».
Dans ses quatuors à cordes op. 4 et op. 7, il pousse le chromatisme à un degré jusqu’alors inexploré qu’il combine avec une forme plutôt classique pour atteindre une parfaite symbiose7. Tandis que les longues phrases mélodiques rappellent le style lyrique de Spohr et l’invention raffinée de Mendelssohn, le climat des deux compositions, profondément mélancolique, est très personnel.

Sa deuxième symphonie, composition inachevée (deux mouvements orchestrés, l’esquisse du scherzo achevée et celle du final s’arrêtant à la mesure 59) qui avait suscité l’enthousiasme de Robert Schumann, témoigne d’une grande maîtrise de l’appareil symphonique qui écarte tout doute que Burgmüller, malgré sa mort prématurée, ne puisse être compté parmi les maîtres du courant romantique. L'orchestration du scherzo fut terminée par Schumann (à partir de la mesure 169). À la demande de la famille de Burgmüller, il tenta de composer un finale (dont il reste 121 mesures d'esquisses), mais abandonna le projet8.

The date above confund us, since Burgmüller born in 4 december 1806 and died in13 february 1874, with 68 years old.
The dates you are refering to are for Norbert's older brother Friedrich Burgmüller, who also was a composer.
