Hearing a boat but not know where it's coming from must be the scariest feeling. Especially in a kayak by yourself in the ocean.

VISIflag with a light beacon, or at least some sort of flag/pole (Can even just use a clip-on flag on a rod). Its something considering how low you are compared to boaters... who arent paying attention.

Easily my favorite channel at the moment.
I'm from the West Coast (PNW) and grew up digging clams, catching crab, fishing, and eating everything afterwards. That's just what my family did. Your videos remind me of how I was connected to local seafood as a kid and how it made me love where I lived.
I live in Korea now and anchovies are key to the local cuisine, used in so many different, delicious ways. Anchovie paste is used in making a lot of kimchi, and theyalso form the base for so many soups, such as dwaenjang jjigae. Like you I don't mind, strong, oily, "fishy" fish, so I think I could probably hang with your Dutch friends and even some Scandos.

    Good Video Taku 😊.
You could put a blinking or solid marine light on your boat for when it is really foggy so you can be seen from other oncoming boats. Also a marine navigation compass on your kayak. They are both easy to install and also (detachable).
    Love pickled herring, YUM 😋.
    Keep the video's comin.

Greek recipe : container, sea salt, chili flakes, thinly chopped garlic, origano in layers, a layer of fileted anchovies, repeat the process. At least 3 hours in refrigerator, cover them with vinegar for a couple of hours and ready. You can go as heavy you like on salt. Greek appetizer! Of course you can use chili kelp!!

    Taku,
The only anchovies I've ever had where those
painfully salty ones in a can.
I would have loved to fry up a bunch of them as a
    great fish snack.
You west coasters have a really colorful bunch of sea life!
I used to fish every week off the Jersey coast with my buddy,
in a 12 foot Aluminum hull.
WE use to get loads of Atlantic Blowfish (puffers),
WE would put the head over a nail and skin them back exposing a nice chunk of meat.
WE ate them hot or cold and they tasted....Drum Roll... just like chicken,
    really.
He lived to fish and eventually moved to Merritt Island where he became a commercial
    fisherman.
I had lots of fun on my visits from the Jersey shore..
He passed in his fifties, but we had many adventures.
You carry the torch, he was also a professional chef.
    Cheers,
    Rik Spector

🌴 Hey Taku, this is a really good vid , the Japanese have the small fish thing going from kohada to small mackerel, and don’t why a lot of Americans don’t see it more of a food source, I guess they look at it as being a bait fish and ignore it , I think there great , I usually pickle or fry em but I’m going to try and do some in oil , Prichard’s are our small one like you see in sardine cans around 3” inches, next up is threadfin herring they can get up to5-6 “ but average is around 4” , I would of liked to have seen ya put about a half of a pail in the boat and you make up a big batch of ones in oil and the other half pickled there always good just to munch on with crackers or in a salad, those open face sandwich’s with a cold one is a perfect lunch , I always keep a couple cans of canned mackerel just in case I get the urge, another great Taku Tuesday! 👍🏼

24:45 ~10% salt by weight in canned goods is called for to effectively kill heartier pathogens, like botulism. Pretty sure the final product would not have the salt content required as a result of the scaling/rinsing step. They look really tasty though! I would be happy to eat them the next day.
