HIGH END FURNITURE MAKEOVER | BUILDING A NEW BASE

  • The bottom half of this 1979 wall unit was useless as it was and on its way to the dump but I knew it was a great candidate for a serious furniture makeover, and a pretty high end one at that! I practiced building a new base for only the second time and gave this piece a sophisticated new look with black chalk paint.

Right away when you put the brown on it I thought wait that's what was already there it's going to look 70s again! I love that you show these furniture flips because it gives me so much joy!
The piece turned out amazing! I want to say it's worth $800.

I have to admit it....at first I was saying, "No, no, no don't paint the cane!", but actually, it turned out great. You can still see the texture. Great call on saving the hardware and adding the dry brush shadowing effect. You brought the hardware back to sophisticated life! You gave the piece a "fairy princess" makeover. I love to see furniture that was heading to the landfill be made over into beautiful, functional pieces for the home. As usual, GREAT job, Katie!

Katie, I love when you share those "oh no" moments. For me, it helps remind me it's never too late to redo a step I'm not jazzed about. With the new color & custom base, this piece will be a classy addition to any home.
    •7.5 hr x $50=$375.
    •Supply cost $125.
•Rebuild & durability added value: new top piece, (+husband labor), new reinforced base, paint inside of piece, custom hardware, plus $$$ for size of piece. This is not the piece to only consider your time & cost. I believe the price should reflect a similar size/style piece in an upscale boutique/store.
    •Cost + Labor x 2 = $1000+ 🌷🌷🌷

Thank you for your encouragement. When you admitted you second guessed yourself, it was a big nudge for me to go ahead and do it. It can always be changed. I will began tomorrow. THANK YOU!😊

I’d say easy $900-1100 (not sure of where you live however). The added base & reinforcements you made set it a cut above the “slap a coat a paint fixer uppers”. This is gorgeous and your work is incredibly inspiring. As well, the time it also took planning for the piece should be added in. You made it “one of a kind” and that alone is worth the extra $$$. Bravo!
