      I have an S7800b. I loved it. I think I attempted to plug the power adapter into the headphone jack, which fried it…sort of? There was a software-based workaround I could utilize to make ear buds continue to work.

      No joke, but the Gizmondo. People seem to forget just how capable of a device it was back then. It was shafted by its company. Everything wrong with it was down to the company itself.

      @@retrotechdad do they talk about legitimately retro handhelds too or is it just modern ones? Hard to find a community that talks about old dedicated platforms both common and rare in the same limelight as these new age "retro" handhelds being pumped out that have no original games of their own. Would be awesome if they talk about modern dedicated handhelds like the Playdate and Arduboy for example.

    I just dug up my old JXD S7800B this morning while going through some old boxes for a garage sale. I charged it up and took a stroll down memory lane! I hadn’t touched it since 2016 and it was better than I remember. Played Galaga and R-Type just fine. Video playback is still good enough to watch movies on. Probably ask $40 for it at the garage sale.

    Great video. I think as our hobby grows we will remember some of the more recent devices into the future, but these early handhelds certainly have been forgotten by all but the most die-hard. Its awesome to see you shine a lot on the roots of our hobby (the non first-party roots that is) so that we can really appreciate how far we've come. Can't wait for more

      @SonicBoone56 4 місяці тому

      I'm a diehard who's not interested in the new crap (except for new dedicated devices like the Playdate, Evercade, Arduboy, Thumby, Switch, etc). At the same time, I've become interested in what were once boring emulation devices. Can't believe things like the Dingoo are old as hell now. This JXD is like 10 years old too. So yeah, they're just as valid as "real handhelds" imo. But I don't think any of the modern emulation machines will be as interesting just because way too many exist (basically like old electronic watches and desktops).

    I had a JXD S7300b back in 2013 and loved it, until it stopped charging. The battery it came with didn't even last a year, but it was a beast until it died. I almost picked up the S7800b, but this one had some serious design flaws (poor battery and both charging ports stopped working within a year) so I waited to see how well the S7800b fared and they kind of disappeared, like you mentioned.
    Nowadays I love playing on the Miyoo Mini Plus, though I miss having a horizontal-style console.

    Cool, I too had the S7800B, an Nvidia Shield Portable and an Xperia Play. I also had the JXD S5800 mobile phone and was a reliable phone for the 5 or so years I used it(upgraded to a ROG Phone 1) My 7800 cooked itself as the battery memory was really bad so even if the battery was full it would continue to try to charge itself. But for the 2 years it worked I was really happy with it as reading books/comics/magazines was easy due to its big screen, which was an awesome screen actually. JXD’s problems began with what should have been their magnum opus, the S192 Singularity. The biggest issue they had was the supply of Nvidia K1 chips which was also in the Shield Tablet. Not sure if enough were being manufactured or if Nvidia throttled their supply due to JXD’s growing popularity. Most of the marketing hype JXD relied on was the fact they had the ultra powerful K1 in their device and when they were eventually to switch to a Rockchip sales dropped off. The other issue was the screen lamination. Dead spots on the touch screen and laminate separation became a known issue. I’m not sure if it was The Phawx or Wicked Gamer maybe who did a video on that. Someone did anyway and it was enough to put me off. Shame - such a beast of device otherwise.

    • @mrttype
      @mrttype 2 місяці тому

      I just checked - it was Tech Savvy Buyer’s review that depicted the screen lamination issue. Rerez also touched on it.

    Android-based gaming handhelds were at their infancy stage during Android Gingerbread till KitKat era with Nvidia Shield Portable being the only one that was capable of running console & PC type of games due to more capable Tegra chipset. Starting from the Android Nougat & Oreo era onwards, SD 700 & 800 chipset series were able to run up to most PSP games with a few GameCube titles. Chinese companies also started to put more powerful SD flagship chipsets into mobile devices such as Asus ROG PHONE, ZTE Nubia's RedMagic & of course, Moqi i7s. An episode on Moqi i7s would be a great addition to your classic handheld series.

    I always wanted one back in the day but they were a little expensive for me at the time.
    However I managed to get one around 3 years ago brand new locally on ebay for a very cheap price.
    Since then I did also flash a custom rom on it.
    Had to replace the touchscreen as apparently this was a common issue.
    They devices are quite fragile and being a little slilppery if dropped even from lap height while sittinh down the unti will often break open with buttons falling out 😁. Usually snapping it back together is all thats needed, just be careful not to damage those ribbon cables 😁.
    The 2 front facing speakers sound quite decent and dont forget the screen is indeed a 7" but at an aspect of 16:10 (common tablet type) like the steam deck, rather than 16:9.
    Screen quality still looks good.
    However these days it is a little limiting being kitkat, you will get most emulators on but for dreamcast you need to use reicast, as you mentioned.
    Personally I found N64,Dreamcast and PSP hit and miss, some work ok with often tweaking needed, but many not.
    You can get a barrel to usb cable for it, for that those that lost their AC charger.
    So being usb at other it can simply plug into usb port, no sep ac charger needed.
    But mine is now in its box, on a shelf.

      Unless the lollipop build you are talking about is relatively new not years old, its prob the same one I tried 😁
      Another thing to note is since this uses a Rock chip 3188 Im sure you could theoredically get linux runniing on it.
      Imagine Batocera on this, even limited by its cpu it would be so much better.
      But whos gonna port Batocera to a an almost 10 year old device.. 😌
