The Ayn Odin 2 Max and Pro are the most powerful retro handhelds that I've ever used. This Android based portable can play GameCube and PlayStation 2 VERY well, and even handle a surprising amount of Nintendo Switch games.

I love that my snarky tweet about paying $11 per question showed up in this video 🙂

Hey RetroGameCorps ! Love your vids ! 🔥🔥
I will say one thing: Switch emulation can be popular because it allows people to apply mods to their games! To do that on an actual Switch, you either need a very, very early iteration of the Switch for a physical exploit, or to pay out the nose to add a modchip.
You need a modded switch to emulate and get support so. Seems worth it to me!, plus v1 switch consoles are super cheap nowadays
Finally, a way to play my favorite Switch games on the go!
Nintendo needs to take some notes!
😂😂😂
It would be pretty cool if Nintendo developed a portable handheld of some kind. They're really far behind in that department
@@NationXyou mean like a switch portable? Ridiculous, too much of a good idea; they’d never.
@NationX you mean a handheld that run nintendo switch games at a stable fps and at least 720p
At 53 years old, I'm a novice when it comes to emulation. I have a couple of Anbernic devices and had ordered an Odin 2 pro. I cancelled my order not because of the price, but because I wasn't sure if I would have a device that would do what I wanted to do. Which is retro emulation and Android games. A dedicated android device just for game is appealing to me. I ended up woth the Retroid Pocket 3+. It's the perfect device for learning emulation. Im just disappointed that it says Diablo Immortal isn't compatible with my device. I am still looking to get an Odin 2. I think it's a great device overall.
Worth every penny for me. I can now play almost every ps2 and gc game at 3x or 4x, 30 or 60fps locked (full speed) for around 7-9 hours straight
Does it have budokai tenkaichi??
@@NathanG64im pretty sure you can add it yourself
@@NathanG64 It doesn't come with any games or emulators. You have to add that stuff yourself.
Late as hell but this was genuinely my dream back when I saw the Shield portable running Half-Life and Portal over 10 years ago now.
How did you get the ps2?
Why is the title "the best way to play switch games" if it can barely run switch games well? Isn't the steam deck way better for that?
Because it's clickbait that gets a video more views which = more money
Wait for Strato emulator this year
Because it's wullf den
why am I still subscribed this guy fell off so hard
It's mainly cause it's not the system's fault, but the driver for switch emulator. Once that get fixed, it will be a different story
He took a note out of wood from “beatemups” and clickbaited
Switch is arm based, Native code Execution (NCE) runs every arm base instruction from the processor directly on your android device since it is Also arm based, no emulation, its all Native, with some exeptions but in general thats what nce does
yes, that is why as of now even most AAA games from Nintendo run with fantastic performance
Great video! The big thing the Odin 2 has going for it is it's CPU. This is one of the cheapest devices I've seen with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in it.
But at this price, I'd recommend a Steam Deck
@MrSujano That doesn't look like Aethersx2's website. Are there updates for the emulator?
agreed if one does not mind that the steam deck is much bulkier, weighs 50% more and battery life is only half of the Odin. I have both devices, since owning the odin I do not really use the deck any more.
Not the yellow grip
A big draw to me of the Odin 2 over a Steam Deck or ROG Ally is that it is an ARM device and thus has significantly better battery life when emulating PS2, GC, Switch, etc. I am also hopeful that through projects like Cassia we will see the ability to run Windows based x86 software through translation layers in the future.
But you miss out on the Steam Library.. There's so much more great stuff on there than just emulated games. I think that library adds a lot of value to the device. It even encludes pretty much all new Xbox titles and a good selection of ps4/ps5 titles like GoW and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
They're already working on making Linux compatible
tbh the other factor for me was weight. I got tired of holding the Steam Deck for long periods of time. @@Nucleosynthese
Well the steam deck OLED has a 50Wh battery vs 8000mah. So the power saving really doesn’t matter that much. It is a smaller device so that counts for something I guess.
@@derosecm it does, it does a lot, have you seen any actual tests?
I did actually broke a nail while opening the microsd slot... 🥺
But great video! I was waiting to see what your thoughts were on the Odin 2. I bought it and pleasantly surprised by the whole purchasing experience (especially after all the Loki issues).
Thanks for clarifying the AYN and AyaNeo btw, I used to get them mixed up when I first started getting into the space cause I didn't know any better and I'm sure there will be others in the same boat too. Thanks man!
I find the Micro SD slot is un-openable without a tool.
The ad is 🔥!!!😂 2:59 It had me on the ground rolling!🤣
I had a terrible issue with Ayn when i bought the first Odin Pro, i ordered a blue One, they made me wait 3 months more, then sent me a transparent one with broken leds
I would choose a Steam Deck above the Ayn Odin 2 any day of the week. That Steam library is just so huge, it adds so much value.
Just can't do the screen. OLED or not it's 720/800p. The PPI is booty.
steam deck is too big and has a terrible battery life. literally should not be considered a handheld at this point. I have large hands but it's still way too uncomfortable. imagine this with someone with average hand size.
enjoy your 2 hours of play time, steam deck needs a tether to a power bank
@@poffy02 I find it to be far more comfortable than the Switch to be honest. Battery life is more than enough, it's for use around the house. (also battery life is better when playing indie games)
@@pdj2975 2 hours is worst case scenario. 4 hours is more realistic, 7 hours if you play light indies. Nevertheless, I would have been okay with 1 hour. Who cares. This is to play in bed, on the plane, on the couch or in the backyard. I have never had an issue. Steam has the largest game library that has ever existed, that's where value is.
I always watch these videos even if I have zero intent on buying the device. I always like what you have to say.
The Steam Deck is my favourite for general emulation, I don’t know if it does Switch, but considering its popularity and accessibility, at least many have an emulation device now.
Steam Deck does Switch pretty well. With the current price drop for the LCD versions, it makes the Steam Deck a comparable price to the Aya Neo 2. Course if you only care about emulation, the Neo 2 has better battery life and is smaller.
I've been playing Switch games on a GPD Win 3 lately, recently got one, really love that device.
since this runs on Android os, I can play android games on this right? So I can play Genshin and Star Rail with it and some of those rpgs.
yeah, any app on the google play store and any apk you want to run
Anbernic 405M and V are fun but even close as an odin 2, i bought the ambernic 405V because i thought i have to wait long until my odin arives germany. In the end i dont even wait a month for it (bought it on the Ayn website) and i can say there are worlds between These two devices
What a mad lad. Wulff Den didn't win a single TGA category, yet he's still posting videos with his head held high!!!
Wow. There's piracy, and then there's Piracy with a capital "P." Switch emulation is Piracy with a "capital P," right now.
Watching this and seeing Yuzu again made me furious with Nintendo again! To hell with Nintendo!
The Switch lacking game saves on the carts themselves or offering a way to put saves onto an SD card is enough reason alone for me to dump and play my Switch on devices like my Steam Deck. I can go between an amazing upscaled higher FPS game with mods to remove dynamic scaling or blur on my desktop or laptop and then play it on the PC handhelds with an experience similar if not better than the switch hardware and it's super easy to manage your saves.
I just picked up a copy of Dragon Quest Monsters The Dark Prince and it says "Does not support cloud saves" on the back of it. A title released like a week ago?!??!
There’s a few games that don’t support cloud saves. All the main Pokémon switch games among them. I’m assuming in part to prevent the ability to dupe monster by trading, closing software, restoring from cloud.
It’s frustrating that this was two companies solution to prevent duping in their monster collection games. Especially when you might actually need to restore a save for any legitimate reason.
I would love to hear about it's cloud/streaming gaming potential (gamepass, steamlink, PS Remote Play, etc..) and compare it to Logitech G Cloud or PlayStation Portal that also just came out.
$369 for a handheld that can play switch games better than the switch and even the steam deck for the most part is actually an amazing deal, not to mention how small it is in comparison to even a regular Nintendo Switch.
I am not interested in Switch emulation, and that's even a tricky matter for a lot of reasons... I totally agree: if you want to play Switch games, just buy a Switch. But I definitely love the idea of upscaling PS2 and NGC games, and even use a handheld as a console to plug to TV: that's the main reason why I would consider an Odin2 (and also because it seems great with controls and ergonomics). However, I totally agree: price is an issue, and there's the Steam Deck just at the corner. Having something slightly less powerful, just to have 1080p PS2 without Switch emulation, around 250$ maybe, and in a smaller form factor, is what I would seriously consider (Retroid Pocket 4 hopefully).
odin 2 has great switch emulation and I don't want a switch because of the shitty OS, android gives you much more
My ROG Ally is great with some games…I mostly have to emulate Switch on PC. I also have an OLED switch and I buy the games I emulate…but the graphics for most games that are Mario are very dated.
The Retroid pocket 4 will be a great fit for you. By the way: When using emulation you can mod the games. Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for example already runs breath of the wild with 60 FPS. something the switch will never be able to.
@@franzgucktyoutube When I wrote this comment, the RP4 Pro was not out yet. Now I can say that this device is the closest to my ideal handheld, but being honest I am still more than satisfied with my Retroid Pocket 2S, so I don't feel the need for an upgrade right now. I think also the upgrade to the RP4 Pro would not be worth, and this is because audio is better on the RP2S, as well as button positions (start and select in particular). I also need a really compact device, and RP2S is better also in this sense.
"if i catch you emulating any indie games i swear to fucking god"
hell yeah, bob has his priorities straight
I think the only appealing aspect of having a console like this that can also do switch is that you don't have to mod a switch to do similar; and I feel like game wise, you'd want to do it to be able to run modded or hacked games.
Animal Crossing is one good example with a pretty good modding scene, but Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl has an amazing one. Because it was created in Unity, fans have been able to do all kinds of stuff to the game from fixing following pokemon, bugs, and removing the chibi-artstyle, to adding in every single pokemon across every generation including Scarlet and Violet, and adding back stuff like Mega Evolutions (as well as silly stuff like "play as kirby"). It's very cool to have that as something you can turn and play on the go... (but also kind of sad the game couldn't do all this stuff already). It really seems like Pokemon BDSP is going to become the future Pokemon Fire Red in terms of creating hacked games and fan projects.
was waiting for your odin 2 video for a while now, awesome
Saving for this as a dedicated wuthering waves gaming handheld
Even someon who owns a Switch can benefit from one device that can run those games and tons of others
I think it is really easy for one to take the high-route on emulation and piracy when they get half their devices free and the price of games and consoles is not even close to an issue at their salaries.
I love that Bob threw shade on his leaving Nontendo podcast during the sponsorship segment.
I would probably get one of those for "high end" mobile gaming, games that are more complex in the play store benefit from having controllers, and by having that big screen i could use it as a tablet.
I honestly feel like you may as well get a steamdeck if you're going to do this at all. It has the cheap price or the other versions for more money, and can do everything here. And if that's not enough, wouldn't you get the ROG Ally?
With the Steam Deck getting as low as 300 dollars you gotta really want one of those to chose an Odin instead of a Deck.
14:39 bingo. This is me. I want to play Final Fantasy 12 for PS2 on a handheld but I also want to be able to emulate the switch Final Fantasy Pixel Perfect.
I also had a good experience buying the original ayn odin pro.
I've found that if you disable Google play and Google play services on android handhelds you tend to see a performance increase.
your fingerprints on the display just drive me crazy
holy shiat
Thank you for making this video. I've been struggling with buying this or not.
"and if you have a yellow one that means you'll quit that podcast"
So damn funny and heartbreaking
I was shocked but I also laughed so hard haha
Can’t wait for Wills tell all drama video in 6 months (podcast reference)
@@mafel97 yeah, it's feeling more like there is some drama there. I thought I could see it during the podcast, but wasn't sure
@@crisiswax nah I don’t really think there is. I think Bob just wants to focus on other things. That fact that Will joked about it on the podcast like that (Wulffden podcast) just makes me think there isn’t really much there it was just time.
The point this review is missing when comparing the Odin to a Steam Deck or other X86-handheld ist battery life and portability. The odin 2 weighs 35% less than the Steam Deck, is way smaller and has much better battery life. Hall-Effect sticks come on top. Switch emulation on Android is still in its infancy but the fact that as of writing the Odin 2 can handle Mario Kart, Mario Odyssey, Animal Crossing and basically any Indie Game flawlessly is remarkable. in a year or so it will basically be an adequate replacement for a switch. Without stick drift. The max variant of the Odin is too expensive, indeed, the pro model for 369 bucks might be the best deal in tech for emulation fans right now. By the way I love RetroGameCorps;-)
Nintendo ninjas want to know your location
emulating indies is only ok if you actually buy it. ive never used any steam software, but own multiple titles just to support some projects ive played 😅
I usually just run switch games on my switch, because that’s what they’re made for 🤷♂️
I'll be getting my new Steam Deck OLED in the mail tomorrow...so I'll have that, a Nintendo Switch, and the Powkiddy RGB30..I should be set for awhile...
Glad to see Satisfye is sponsoring you. I’ve been telling you for years to get a grip ! #wulffdendad
With shipping and tax it cost 500€ in EU, I bought a second hand switch lite for a 100 made it cheaped for a 100 and bought a 1to micro sd for a 100, so it's a total of 300€ for the ultimate handheld, and for the other game, I bought the new gamesir g8 it turned my phone to a perfect retro device
"I played the drums... I played the drums!!!" -- This made me LOL
Bob is right. I am just a fun little silly guy havin' a little goof.
Why did your title say that it was the best device to play switch games if your recommendation is that it’s not? Weird lol.
Clickbait 🤑🤑🤑🤑
I mean it's not just for switch emulation, also most classic arcade cabinets, all the atari consoles, all the Sega consoles, all Nintendo handhelds, all Sony handhelds,nes,snes,n64,gamecube,wii,switch,ps1,ps2,pc emulation is getting better also all the things an android does.ooh alot of people don't know this but GGPO for android let's you play classic arcade games on line with people around the world.
This is a cool device, it really shows what an Android gaming handheld can do, but I could only see somebody getting it if the size of the Steam Deck is a deal breaker for them.
I'm someone who will always prefer the ease of setting up a handheld device with Windows.. that said. With the current options available the Odin2 strengths lie within it's insanely impressive battery life and overall hardware quality. I DO NOT like Android or dealing with it's setup BUT it is the ONLY negative I have. The O2 destroys Steamdeck in every single way. My O2 PurpPro is the best powerhouse handheld I've ever owned
one thing thats nice about nintendo switch emulation is that games play better, example being pkmn sword and shield run terrible on the switch but emulated on pc they run great
... Imagine downloading an APK on a computer to push to an android device.... With wifi.
I mean with the size of it, it's more of a true handheld than the Switch. It looks like something I could actually tuck away in my pocket instead of having a extra accessory specifically for it like a bag or carrying case. The Switch Lite was such a waste of potential. They could've made something much smaller and maybe even have given it a nice clamshell design. You can technically take the Switch on the go, but it's nothing like a 3DS or a PSP. Unless you have really big pants, your Switch isn't going to fit in your pocket, especially with Joycons attached.
my odin 1 base came exactly 2 weeks after I ordered it
Hahaha yellow means you will quit the podcast! I can hear Wood crying in the corner now.... 😂
saludos desde Nuevo Leon, Mexico!!!
I just got my Odin 2 yesterday, its very impressive. Had no issues with my order, so strange to hear you had issues.
The mig switch flash cart plus the oled mod is far better approach if you really want to play switch games.
Quit simping for Jirard, take a step back and look at the issue OBJECTIVELY
Great review. I want this but on the other hand i have so bloody much games i havent played yet. I need 3 clones of me to even play the existing games :D
Can you plug Ayn 2 to the TV?
yes you can
If I didnt already have an S23 ultra I would def get one of these
To avoid being overwhelmed with the plethora of Retro handheld options, do like what PC gamers have always done.
List down what you want first THEN filter down what's available on the market. 😀
I find Discord a good source of information to help sieve through what handhelds to get per use basis.
I bought an Odin 2 Max and love it, but until a Switch emulator can pull off save states, I may as well just use my regular old Switch.
I also have an ROG Ally, but use this thing for lower emulation as the battery lasts forever!
Update 3months now.
Pre edit: 2 months later it's still on sale for $459 for the max
13:00 but it's not $460 because you don't need the max version or the pro version because 8 GB of RAM is plenty so it's $300.
And I don't need to pay Nintendo $60 for every single game that I want regardless of how much time is past since it was released
The price to me is not that bad when you think about having to buy an Android phone with an SD8 Gen 2($600+) and a good controller that’s usb-c ($60+), if you don’t have one as your daily driver.
exactly! I sd8 gen 2 makes this price tolerable imo- just not the max version
Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 scored 5338 points. Can't wait for an updated version with larger screen!
The whole point is the smaller profile. Otherwise, just get a Steam Deck.

So far I read everywhere that there are problems with charging :/
There's nothing on this piece of paper... hahaha this guy cracks me up.
Fun fact, Ayn and Retroid are owned by the same parent company!
Not to mention streaming is more fluid and consistent through xbox game pass and to my ps4 than anythung else available.
that laptop kills me
Currently having to email them over a case that wasn't in my order
The only reason I can commend switch emulation is being able to play the same games at a better quality. In my case, Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate can run at 60fps when emulated vs the locked 30 just by using a cheat code. some other games do the same.
The yellow one means you're going to quit a podcast with that guy 😂
You lost my respect when you made your tweet defending the completionist as a good person. Charity fraud and lying about where donations truly go for over 10 years is a serious crime, and no matter how buddy buddy you are with him he still deserves to be called out for it. You and Wood should have just kept your tweets to yourselves.
I just want an OLED steamdeck to make an arcade like yours. I already got an 8bitdo arcade stick 😎 and the 8bitdo keyboard as well to play typing of the dead.
All I wanted was a power house ps2 emulation and maybe some GameCube games. And switch emulating is just a plus. This is perfect. I just have to wait several weeks.
It's not a long wait, I ordered mine and received it in 12 days
Well, thank you. I really wanted to know the power of this console because I want to buy it. I don't really know that much about emulation, I have dabbled. I'm emulating things on my computer once. And that was the only the only Game that I have
Played was mobile emulated, call a duty mobile. I don't know how to set up emulation games.
And yeah, I'm mainly getting it for 2 reasons. One super powerful, another 1 is I get 2. Actually 3 reasons. Another one is I get to play all my games. I like to play on my phone. On that console with an actual controller and another reason is
Streaming, I'm a fan of streaming. I pay for every streaming service, so this console is something that I want for a stream. Yes, you don't need the greatest hardware for streaming, but because of g force now. You kinda need to have your console running in 4k Or whatever you're trying to play defourth, now on if it doesn't support 4K, you will only get 1080P to play energ Force now game, and I pay for the ultimate here, so I want a handheld that has the ultimate capabilities 4K a 120 Hz, but yeah, I am excited? I thought I'd never get to play these old names again after he said about emulating games. I'm going to look for emulators when I buy this console. Cause me and my buddy, he wants to buy A. Wee because he wants to play all the old wii games. But I think because we live close to each other or we did, I don't live anywhere closer now. I think he could buy it this console. I'll learn how to set up emulated games and set it up for him. And I'll set up for myself so we can play old school games together, but like back in the day when we used to play, I remember after school, I used to rush to his house to play the new games that came out for the three sixty for the new games that came out for the wee
This device is downright fantastic. If they stuck an Oled screen on it, and Yuzu gets from the infancy stage in the next year, switch will have a P R O B L E M
The switch is 6 years old it doesn't matter anymore
if people stopped glorifying piracy maybe nintendo wouldnt have a problem?
@@jub8891 if people stopped licking the boots of billion dollar companies that don't give a shit about you maybe people wouldn't have to pirate
@@The_MEMEphisimo switch 2 would have already been released at that point and it honestly doesn't matter after that cause now the goalpost will be moved to emulate switch 2 titles.
Switch is about to be replaced.
The steam deck is nice but it's huge and will have much worse battery performance, so I'd rather get the Odin 2. I have a PC for PC gaming 🤷
You are just so entertaining. I love your channel. Debating if i buy the ayn odin 2 since i already have the logitech g cloud.
whispers "just mod a sw11t ch"
Either Bob is utterly fearless or he's angling to get his channel nuked from orbit so he can spend more time with the family.
Does the ayn Odin 2 come with games or do you have to download games for your self? And if you do where? 🤔 what if you are new to the emulator game.
no it does not come with Games, they are called ROMs when referring to emulation. Just use your own ROMs, otherwise Google might help you;-)
The Odin 2 kinda reminds me of the Ipod touch. Same spec with its phone counterparts and at half the price
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe wants you to install Switch firmware to properly start, by the way ...
i feel like neither of these really make sense to get based on the entry level pricepoint for the steam deck being $399. You'd be better off just getting one of those and being able to play your entire steam library plus having the ability to do almost everything these devices can.
Damn man I’m new to this . I want a handheld so bad , one that I can play heroic games on the go . Not just streaming at home . Yet I don’t want some big emulater. What is the perfect handheld
Wulff you should do an update video. They've patched a lot of stuff and apparently with just the base model you can do crazy stuff and you have a max and pro
Personally I'm glad for Switch emulation. I don't want to have to take my Switch out and about with me, partly because I don't want to risk the hardware but also because I have to take a bag with me if I do. My phone on the other hand I can slip in my pocket and I was going to have it with me anyway. Switch emulation also makes my phone the only place I can play all of the Telltale Walking Dead games portably, as Michonne isn't available on Switch.
Ayn seems cool but if your walking around with a $800 - $2,000 Android phone/foldable just buy an controller grip for your phone or atleast use an Xbox controller if you already have one.
Your android phone can absolutely destroy these cheap Android handheld... If you have money to waste... Your better off wasting it on a steam deck, Asus rog ally extreme, or Lenovo legion go.
I like the think. Try it before you buy it for SW.
