There's a difference between turps substitute and white spirit, they are basically made the same way, from the same thing but turps substitute doesn't have a British standard (245) associated with it, so it can be poorer quality..thats why paint manufacturers only recommend thinning with white spirit As regards 'turpentine' i'd say 99.9% of painters have never even seen proper turpentine let alone used it..artists use it, not decorators
