Thank you for a very educational & enjoyable video , I,m 62 first time I picked a paint brush since school I was 60. This last 2 years I have enjoyed painting my families homes, It keeps me busy in the winter, From a much appreciating ground worker still on the tools. Thanks again. Its the first I have watched looking forward to the rest . Liam.
Brilliant Video. Very true..."Time is money" certainly on price work. 99% of site agents would not notice a rolled finish on spindles and it makes the job so much quicker and easier. Very helpful vid to any newcomer to site work and new build painter. Well done.
Mark, thanks a million for providing these videos, they have been a great help. God, how I love glossing with a roller! Best... Mike PS the missus is dead chuffed too (with the progress haha).
+wallington filming price (on the grip) and private (prestige). on the grip meaning same money if you get in done in 1 day or 3 days, so get a grip and get finished quick lol
wallingtonfilming The Candle man they ain’t got a clue Mark,!,,they’ve done a bit of painting for their auntie,,then think their painters,,,Regards, the 72 year old spread 👍👍😀
Totally agree with the comment from Richard Dwyer. I'm in the trade and would never just roller any gloss work and leave it. To achieve a smooth, high gloss finish the paint should always be laid off with a brush.
That's what DIYers think but, in fact, rollers leave a stippled finish which feels bumpy to the touch (even with the glosser rollers used in the video). As a pro decorator, I always lay off oil based paint with the very tips of a brush which should leave no brush marks and a finish that feels like glass. I understand that time is money but, after applying the gloss with a roller, it should take a pro 10 seconds to lay off a spindle for a better finish. Maybe I'm just 'Old School'.
OBEJAZZFUNKSOUL roller finish is an orange peel like effect which is considered a defect any professional decorator. A good site agent will always notice this and flag it up and a good tradesmen will never leave it to chance. Taking the extra couple of minuets to lay off to get a proper finish is doing the job properly.
I would definitely do the underneath of the handrail first then the base rail, spindles then the sides and top of the handrail and the newel post last. That’s the way I’ve always done it, good video anyway.
Great video, always like all the little tips, like knocking the brush on the scuttle... I've just done the undercoat on three flights of stair (Spindle-tastic!! NOT), goign to be doing the satinwood coat tomorrow, would you apply 2 coats, and would you sand lightly between, thx, keep up the great work...
Surely you would start from the inside of the bannister, then to the outside as this would make more sense and make life more easier, and you would also get less paint on yours hands.?
Respect to you loving the videos I always used to brush the spindles never roled but the Dulux sleeves do look good. How do you store your rollers after use? Do you clean with cleaning spirits or just chuck them in a sealed tub of water. If the latter how do you get them ready for the next use?
I'm starting a level 1 painting and decorating course at college this September I know that you do panting, wallpapering, and glossing but is there actual woodwork such as cutting wood in painting and decorating at all?
Every Gloss I've used you only have a short time before it goes off and cant be painted over or laid off any more as it drags and the marks won't come out. That one you have there works like gloss is supposed to. What is it?
can you give me some advise please how much wouid you charge a customer for doin a stairs Hall. landing ...2 coats emulsion ..all skirts 10 doors glossed .and stair banister .please advise wouid be great .
have u a video on walls and ceiling, I want to roll walls undercoat as v dark and run the same white over coving and across ceiling , any tips buddy , cheers
I'm a pro painter. Trade and private are different worlds. high end residential finish takes time. site, new builds. smash them out to a certain finish in the time the price allows. man who work for nothing get a job anywhere. man who works on price in out see you later next plot please. A lot of people don't realise how tight the prices are on price. two beds need to be done in 3/4 days. you may have to paint 2 one beds a week if the plots are ready and available just to make any money. You are not painting your grandmas spare room and having tea and Jaffa cakes every half an hour. Your working, hard. every day putting in some serious hours banging out voids or new builds to make some money on a price that normally only allows a couple of days per flat.
Well, at least now I know why the of the quality painting was very average in the new build houses Ive lived in. You should tell people that this vid is meant for trade people working at speed on new build price jobs, not have ago diyers who are about to wreck their carpets. Good video though.
Hi mate. I need to gloss an old staircase that hasn’t been painted in 30 years. Im keeping it white but was wondering if i need to remove the old white paint before undercoat and gloss or just sand the current paint down and then undercoat and gloss? Thanks
Well ive just painted 30 year old white internal doors which were badly yellowed with age and UV light. So i applied 2 coats of pure white primer undercoat nefore fresh glossing. Came up a treat.think just going straight on with gloss any yellowing might show through quite quickly
very tedious work because there are so many surfaces to paint. you have to be very systematic to ensure coverage. The easiest way to do it is spraying, but not always possible.
Helo hi sir good morning iam sanjeev iam painter iam working here in uae 🇦🇪 dubai iam interested job canada 🇨🇦 canada I want to join your company in canada painter work please help me
what type of brush are you using? been glossing skirting boards today cannot get rid of brush marks no matter what I do. Its some what depressing cannot get a good finish.
Derek Gibbons you have to be reasonably stupid. Not much of a thinker. A bit slow. Then add paint fumes all day and you end up with a full time vegetable.
Rebecca Harmer don’t forget 30 weeks paid holiday, full private bupa, diamond ring every time you finish rolling out a room, private jet and fresh set of Hamilton brushes every day pre worn in .
Rebecca Harmer yeh yeh I’ve been in the game yrs. self employed is shite. No holidays. No Sick pay. Good money when it’s good no money when it’s not. It’s wank. Fucking wank.
wallington filming I did my stairs today actually and I used dulux once satinwood on top of a sparse bass coat over varnished wood that I sanded down . It has come up ok so do u think the paint I used is correct. Funnily enough I also used a small foam roller on the big areas of wood in the hallway and it came up OK and saved time but I will still need to do another roll. I am straight by the way hey

Wrong type of roller mate, you need to use a foam roller for gloss and only on doors if you really need to use a roller but laying off the door with a brush never for what your doing.

Great video. It was really good to see a British video on the decorating trade instead of all the American videos.
Excellent!!!!! Just what I needed to know before painting a staircase.
Thank you very much my friend.

Mark, thanks a million for providing these videos, they have been a great help. God, how I love glossing with a roller! Best... Mike PS the missus is dead chuffed too (with the progress haha).
I would do the spindle's 1st then the handrail last, as idiots always put hands on it lol (lock up and leave)
I've been a painter & decorator over 35 years & would always lay it off with a brush. I would've got the sack for just using a roller.
OBEJAZZFUNKSOUL same here
Agree.
But this is house bashing, not a level five no expense spared private job, big difference
Time is money. Is use a 9" roller on mine then lay them off. Job dome half the time
Cheers mate,
I'm glad someone understands what I was saying. There is a difference between price & private

I'm no professional decorator, but i would have thought a roller would leave a surface free of brush strokes.

Yes free of brush strokes but leaves a roller effect

Superior finish for almost no extra effort. It should be a given.

Thanks

Surely you would start from the inside of the bannister, then to the outside as this would make more sense and make life more easier, and you would also get less paint on yours hands.?
Seems useful to me. Spindles are so time intensive, anything to save time is a blessing.
excellent video, just about to do my 3 story house and your tips will be invaluable.
If the staircase is varnished. And you wanted to satinwood would you have to sand it down first then undercoat and prime it..?
yes
Prime then 2 coats of satin.

nah as close as you'll get to cutting stuff and it'll be on private work is coving which they dont teach you at college and it isnt wood
Great vid, cheers.Helped me a lot.
Does white gloss give it a better finish compared to satin ?
Sir, I like the way you paint.you are a very good painter.
I am indian painter, can I get a job.
Yes in India
Can you get them rollers in 9 inch?

put turps in your gloss bud easier to work with
Owatrol oil paint conditioner is what you need . Or Floetrol if water based.
@13:30 How to choose the right roller
can you give me some advise please how much wouid you charge a customer for doin a stairs Hall. landing ...2 coats emulsion ..all skirts 10 doors glossed .and stair banister .please advise wouid be great .
Can u paint over gloss stairs cases already or just scraoe them off i wanna paint it white and the rails black
If I haven't said it before, this video is great.
Thank you.
Would you use a gloss roller .?
Your an inspiration mate thanks lot
Nice job
Do the rollers work with round spindles it cut out when you went to talk about them

Are you using oil base or latex ?
When u say lay the spindles off with a brush do u use more gloss paint on the brush ?
Are Tac cloths/rags any good to a painter, i never see them in use anymore
I use them

Want to put some paint with that white Spirit 😂
Many thanks for the tips on the rollers
Hi wallingtonfilming The Candle Man how do you prepare a staircase that has been previously stained for gloss?
Call a professional painter
Hi Buddy, what is the best roller to use when painting oil based dulux gloss.Great video
Two fussy blokes
What undercoat was applied? Is there a special paint for it?
No undercoat, as he’s ruff as fu*k
What's the paint ..oil based or water based?
Thanks for the advice. Good man
Excellent thanks

Good video mate... But think you need some new white's ????

I normally wait until they stand up on there own 🤣🤣🕯☕️🚬
To be honest they are clean compared to most painters haha. Should see mine. They are made of caulk 🤣🤣
Thanks Again friend
That isn’t the way I was taught when I was an apprentice and he is leaving heel marks in the paint because he isn’t laying off right with the brush.
should have masked whole of uk and sprayed spindles to keep site agent happy

Roll them with a 9" roller then lay them off. Time is money as you say. You will thank me later 🤣
Wouldn't spraying it be quicker and a better finish ?
why would i use a dust brush to paint ?
I would also use a proper gloss roller
Thank goodness am an electrician I hate painting
No wonder he switched to an airless sprayer this is way too time consuming.
I tried this but got bored after doing the first end. How anyone can do painting for a living is beyond me. Must have the patience of a saint.
