Power is not the most important aspect when throwing a punch in a fight. Too many beginner over concern themselves with getting that knockout punch, and in turn tense up their muscles, waste energy, inhibit their accuracy, and slow their punches down. You’ve probably heard people say it before: stay calm in a fight. They don’t mean like a wet noodle, overly relaxed, but wait to tense up your muscles just before making contact!
Created with Coach's Eye. Try it out►www.coachseye.com
An example of a great fighter who tenses his muscles at the right time is Gennady Golovkin. He stays calm and composed just before his punch lands, then you see his muscles and face both tense up. And look at his knockout percentage! This works for him because he makes sure his punch is going to land in the right spot, it gets their on time, and THEN he tightens up to pack a harder punch.

Man... I wish I could hang out with guys that were interested in fighting like me, but everyone I know only wanna talk about getting high, drunk and gaming and other stupid shit.
Keep it up bro I know how you feel, me and my bestfriend are boxers but no one wants to talk about fighting just ps4 and parties
kidda the red Yeah me too man. I can only talk with my team mates but they are way much older than me, and my high school class is full of junkies and gamers.
Butcher6evil III I understand bro, but keep training hard and you'll make it
+Butcher6evil III I'm with you guys.
+Matt Rowold same here
Power is very important when throwing a punch. It's how you generate the power. Power does not have to equal tense.
Adam Donovan will shadow boxing increase power and speed just wondering I’ve been practicing for about 3 months now so still a very new beginner and I’m noticing that By instinct I’m always keeping the hand that’s not throwing the punch high protecting my chin
@@jamesmatthews6715 use a training partner or just a punching bag
I’d say shadow boxing helps you build the mechanics to throw punches with both power and speed. But heavy bags, resistance bands and pads are the best way.
the explosive more important than power in punch
@@Burnwarcrimetemple that is the power….
Precision beats power, timing beats speed. - Conor McGregor
callum3383 Conor McGregor? Why would you take fighting advice from a social media personality? I think he sells whiskey too actually...
CableReadyTechnoSIut
"Social media personality"?? LMFAO
CableReadyTechnoSIut lol. You joking??
It’s a Bruce lee quote McGregor just restated it.. 🤦🏿♂️
MadTitanMMA me? Of course not! What’s retarded is putting social media celebrity Conor McGregor into a cage match with Khabib Nurmagomedov! Did you see that PPV? Poor McGregor got mauled! He shouldn’t have been in there, they need *fighters* in there, not a guy who looks like a lost puppy dog. Poor fella got knocked on his ass and then choked out, yikes. Stick to selling whiskey boye.
the key to a strong punch is to be relaxed to use ur whole body use gravity in ur favor and tense ur muscle right on impact
takes a lot of practice
Learning to pivot on your feet correctly throws your body weight into a punch as well.
I do that naturally so...
you can't use gravity to your advantage when you're opponent is taller than you or even your same height, it works oppositely, but yes gravity can do a lot of damage in certain situations but those situations don't happen often. I can't believe the amount of people that actually think they have fighting knowledge, it's hilarious. I actually fight and train every day, youtube has so many wannabes. Jt is the only one on this comment that said anything useful. Though basics, basics are most important.
Mrwolfguydude "youtube wannabees" i started training kyokushin karate when i was 5; 4 times a week à 2 hours
am 16 now
guess i still am a wannabe
Dont act like you know how to fight cause I haven't even heard of you in anywhere so don't act like your some great fighter that has the abilities to defeat anyone you want People on the internet are all bluffs
As my trainer always said, "If you can't go slow, you can't go fast" ~ Armando
shut the fuck up Jesus
Fer good
where you get that Goku's shoes?
those are wrestling or boxing shoes. search on line. good ankle support for footwork
what about knees? got injuries on both of my knees, now they felt out of place and weird to pivot. like theyre loose.
even when running or walking, it felt strange.
I need those them shits flyyyyyy
Lmao
When I was trained I was told to tense up only at the point of impact....that's were the power comes from.
well and thats totally right - and also important because of the fist - you ll break it if you dont clinch it before impact
but it is even better to be loose all the time and throw palms
John Constantin palms are very effective and reduce the risk of injury...a hard karate chop to the neck is often overlooked but it is one of the most effective strikes.
A hard shot to the neck hurts like hell! I'd like to warn though that using palmstrikes doesn't mean you shouldn't be cautious of technique. If you hit higher then the bottom of your palm you can hurt your wrist.
+Brent z the palm of yur hand is safe to hit in a street fight , I owe someone ass whooping an my right hand pinky don't bend an that's my power hand
Do u tense Ur whole body
You'd be surprised how many street dudes don't know how to punch
What the heck?! How do you punch that fast :o
Years and years of practice, my man.
***** Respect!
*****
Two years are enough, Shane. xD
I mean, if you don't slack and actually like training. Doesn't mean you can stop training though! You need to continue or your speed will die, along with your strength, stamina, reflexes and maybe technique.
Griffith oh wise lord griffith.

I speak from actual experience.
This guy knows his shit
Benacot he must not know that it's power that sends the chin spinning, and that's what knocks them out, normally people saying power doesn't matter are people who have a weak punch and aren't a born puncher.
You didn't watch the video did you?
Ryan Hollenbeck nah, watched about the first half and clicked off, he's full of shit. The title should be, why you shouldn't tense when punching.
Dat Boi exactly you didn’t watch the full video headass. Shut up and watch the whole thing before judging
You obviously stupid, does your punch becomes stronger when you push after the impact? No.
One of my TaeKwonDo teachers said "you've gotta be relaxed when punching, because relaxation is speed, and speed is power"
A martial arts master once said "fighting is a lazy man's game"
Very refreshing to see fight info videos with a balanced approach, filled with practical advice. Shane is very professional and I don't think there's a single video from this channel that casts doubt over his skill and knowledge. Of course, these tips should be paired with regular training... but if you're someone who doesn't train and you find yourself in a fight, perhaps something from a FightTips video pops into your head and saves your life. That'd be a great video for the channel: a true story of someone using Shane's tips in a fight!
Be like water man, water can flow or it can crash.
***** Hahahah!
Ric Rac melodysheep
Jesus walked on water, and turned water into wine. Be like Jesus and drink from his Word, and you will never thirst again. Now, back to what creates the power of a strike - any strike, hand, knee, elbow, head butt, foot. It's a combination of being relaxed before the moment of impact and being tense, only at the moment of impact, as when, for example, chopping wood with a heavy axe, or hatchet, or as when someone cracks a whip, loosely holding the handle of the whip, until the moment it has neared its intended point, then grasping tightly at impact. Along the way, in the example of the whip, the whip is propelled most quickly and powerfully by offloading the weight of the body, say, for a reverse, sidearm whip, much like someone throwing a frisbee does, when they are attempting to throw one a very long distance - as when one throws a reverse ridgehand strike to someone's kidneys, rotating their hips into the strike, and also, transfering the weight from one foot to the other, and offloading it at impact - POP! Visit my site for more on such principles and concepts, though, this is just the tip of the iceberg. And keep in mind, never did I say anything about such nonsense as Chi power or aligning Chakras or other BS. No. It's physics as applied to the human body, along with an understanding of how we are wired, neuromuscularly, in exercise science called Kinesiology - the study of movement!
I almost never add alot of power to my punches unless I know its a free way from where my fists are to my opponents chin.
Many times just evading and blocking all of their strikes while constantly jabbing up lowers their morale and exhausts them enough for the openings to come
I feel bad for the hard ass that messed with shane. Ur a good dude shane. Thamks for all th3 help bro
+G36Jeff w0w nic3 sp3lls!
I really like your movement, its smooth
Awesome tips, this relax and tense will save me oxygen and extend my energy span. All your vids have been perfect ready for my first uwcb fight. Thanks pal. Phil
...THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE TIPS! Wow...I actually never thought I could punch much faster thanks to this video. Shane, you're a talented guy thanks.
you need way more subscribers bro. keep it up champ.
look at this beast... doing big things Shane ... keep it up my man
Holy molars bro it's bleeding my eyes right now to see you punch that fast! You sir, are pretty awesome!
i trained in boxing my teens gave it up after a bad injury in an accident after 13 years recently started to get back into it. its kind of like riding a bike you kind of never forget but start remembering bit by bit but ive puck up some nasty habits your videos are really helpful thank you.
So impressed how this is organized. The data is sequenced. The material is presented in an efficient gradiant. Unusual. Efficient.
One thing I think is important to think about if in a "real" fight, where you don't have gloves, and to a certain degree in MMA with grappling gloves: Not tensing the fist until last moment is of course sound advice, _but_ if the opponent moves into your punch when without gloves you can seriously hurt your hands if you have waited to tense your fists. It's easy to underestimate just how hard a human head is and how badly you can hurt your hands by hitting it with a sloppy fist. Actually, in a street fight it may even be prudent to not strike with your fist at all, using an open hand instead. Being ex military we trained strictly to never strike with our fists in hand to hand fights since you really can't afford broken fingers or hand bones which will make you a crappy shot. This is a special situation of course since the opponent you may end up in a hand to hand fight with may well be wearing a helmet, body armor, lot's of equipment etc which makes the risk of hurting your hands even greater, and you will really never score a knockout in a situation like that anyways.
The Pekiti slap can be devastating. I practice it
This helped sooo much. Believe it or not I’ve been training for a couple years and still felt slow in my punches. I’m not the quickest guy but I was slower than I knew I could be. I would always gas so hard too when I threw quick because I was still tense and throwing bombs. If I just let it flow, it feels so much faster. Such an obvious thing but seeing this video made it click 💕
thanks for sharing your information.I went to first degree blk blt in Kenpo Karate being tense the full time and it was hell!I'm just glad someone got this knowledge out to the public.Thank you very much, bro.
The fundamentals not neglected and done well! Thanks for sharing.
Good tip indeed..Keep the feet moving.
Good stuff! Tightening your hands and muscles right before contact is a a good ass reminder for preventing hand injuries too.
Helped me a lot bro much respect
This is a great vid Shane I watched it 4 times already lol
this was really informative vid! Thanks man :)
someone shoulda told mike tyson all this when he was knocking all those people out
I can prove this. One of our "best" varsity football players asked me if he could punch me as hard as he could in the chest. I knew it might hurt but I wanted to gauge his strength and test myself. He threw a sloppy horrid punch and it didnt even hurt that bad. Strength dont mean shit
Shane is definitely correct on this one, people. I lost count of how many times I quickly tapped someone and hurt them. These are Cruiserweights, and Heavyweights, by the way. All I did was close distance with fast steps and pop! Now the guys either stopping for a minute to regain his bearings, or he's backing up/standing there gasping for air.
Awesome channel
u got good footwork man
Thank you for your videos!
Great one
Love the way you explain shit bro thanks, keep up the good tips
good teaching shane
love this, these are all okinawa karate principles too. loose, fast, accurate, tension only at the moment of contact, angles, and weight transfer. good karate has this. :)
Hit em as hard as you can as fast as you can and as many times as you can and at the same time keep your chin tucked and your stance on point and always punch first!
Great video good reminder for me
I know this is a old video, but it is so true. I had this same wrong conception of looking for that 1 punch knock out, especially from my modern karate background.
Woooo..!! Ur my mentor now bro..!
great vid man...sorry i havent talked much....my facebook twiiter have been blocked by my school on my computer...but im always here for you man.:)
could you do a video showing us some drills that we can do to teach us to stay loose and not tense up until the moment that our punch makes contact with our opponent? ive been with fight tips since the beginning love your work and how the channels grown hope you can help me out do you keep your kicks loose until the moment of impact like you do with a punch? thanks for taking the time to read this comment and God bless you and your loved ones.
Great video I realised that if I just watch then try it I get it quite quickly
I just did 150 punches in 2 sec with only one arm take that world.
U can't do 150 punches in 2 seconds.
I just did it with no arms. Figure that one out.
get some strength bands and let her rip lol
He means wankin lol
wanna see me throw a punch? wanna see me do it again??
Power is important for that punching video game.
Thanks for the advice! I'm already seeming faster!
nice video broo
good stance man
True true I am a big guy and have a real bad habit about throwing power punches, thanks for the tip
Great insight. You look pretty hard to counter as well. I always keep muscles relaxed because ik it's agility and speed matters more in fight however I never knocked anyone out while relaxed. I knocked people out when I tensed all my muscles. Tense muscles somewhat decreases speed and accuracy but increases power behind punch.
you got them shoes untied i tell you what (hank hill voice)
Informative
Love you💙💙
This helps me a lot cause I have mucle and nerve problems
i love this video...too-many ppl focus on power...WAAAAY too-much...and they wonder why the gas after 5minutes...--another great video..good videos..
It's amazing that the time came out to almost exactly half of the first punches. It's because when you tense all of your muscles, half of your muslces (flexors) are actually working AGAINST you. If your tricep is extending your arm, your bicep is actually trying to pull it back in. Tensing your muscles doesn't somehow give your arm more mass, it just makes you half as efficient.
Fully agree with avoiding excess tension.
The demo wasn't quite apples vs apples though...
Driving with the hips on the tense ones but not on the loose ones.
Shane, Please make a video on how to block with diffrent types of punches I really need help blocking
ive been watching these videos for some time now, and i just wanted to say that i would love to see shane in a tournament and would also love to spar with him. i dont want anyone to think that im making light of his abilities though. i just think it would be hella fun
Love ur vids
Thank you!
I don’t believe power is better than technique, nor do I believe that technique beats power. I’d rather have both
Thanks Shane for the tips! WHAT ARE THOSE SHOES CALLED?
Sick Jordans.
Like ur the best u areee the besst i swear
shane can you do a tutorial on how to be handsome and slick in fighting? been in your vids man very beautiful content!
Shane can you please make a video on good defense, I got the offense part down, but can you show some defense. Like how to block punches, hold up your hands, etc. And if you already have a video like that can you please link it in a response. Thank you!
Yes i would like to see this as well.
I've always wondering why he hasn't made many videos about blocking, catching, slipping or ducking punches, bescause those things are very important
BigBackyardBrawls he has made videos about that in the past
MrKinggodzilla i said many*
Haha, awesome video, man! And tbh, I would rather not focus much on power... accuracy and speed is what really matters.
It all about timing and accuracy!
Good advice. All that excess tension does is make it harder to adapt your movement and increase the chance that you telegraph the technique, while wasting energy. Your arm weighs as much or more than a baseball bat, so it's capable of serious damage without the extra muscle effort or even without the body in it.
One thing is, GGG uses the hole kinetic chain to get the power via fascia up to through his chest and then he throws a punch. IT looks stiff but it his muscles contract in the proper sequence(pushing through the forefoot with the glutes, rotating with the contraction of glutes, while rotating pulling the arm slightly back and once the rotation of the body is done then throw the punch(I simplified the explanation, so its not the most accurate)). Power is important, but I understand what you wanted to say. As Connor said , timming beats speed and accuracy beats power.
Got in a drunk fight recently, threw a big punch, dislocated shoulder. Luckily guy didn’t pursue the fight once he saw I dislocated shoulder.
You move a lot like Conor Mcregor. When shadowboxing it almost translates into a weird looking waddle, but it allows mobility when striking. I have known this since I began training, but after watching this video I think I should take a second look at my technique and how im sparring/doing pad work. Thanks for the great video!
Great speed :o
very interesting and important topic... also, always going for a head shot and a knock out, is a very ridged way of looking at self defense.... take someones fists out, strike arms, limbs in general, takes your opponents mind to where you want it, makes them hesitant in using their weapons, you cause serious pain in the lead limb... that will likely cause then to change stance and even pull their guard in tighter, it gives them something else to think about : )
well said, a huge amount can be done in 2 seconds.... as you have said, the big haymaker etc is a bit like a birthday present to an experience fighter/martial artist.
if youre ever in newyork, i d love to spar with you man
There is a very important thing which is critical if you want to deliber a good punch and that's DISTANCE. You want to extend your arms to generate maximum power. The combination of proper technique, balance and distance will give anyone great results but you have to drill a lot (hard and smart work every day) and then practice it in sparring.
Speed is twice as important as "power." Kinetic energy is squared with velocity (speed + direction) and then multiplied by 1/2 then by weight. 1/2massxspeedsquared. That is why high speed crashes do so much more damage. Twice as fast punch = 4x harder hit. 3x faster punch = 9x harder hit.
and that's why 200 kg dude wil knock the fuck out of you
so.. flash could possibly punch harder than superman?
but how his arm will hold the counter force?
WHat are you a SmARTyPanTS??
Raul UFO Well, honestly speaking if you focus and train on speed as a primary aspect, I think you could punch a **300 kg** dude 10 times on all the places where it hurts before he could even lift his arm.
dezinfectant tru tru tru
"Relax the whole body so that it can react instantly without resistance, becoming like clear water. Water can take any form; It drifts without effort one moment then pounds down in a torrent the very next." I learned that from Spike Spiegel ;)
As Newtons Second Law states: Force equals mass times acceleration - without a high acceleration, there is no force
can you talk about Lomachenko and how we can train to move like that?
Awesome
Speed equals power, complimented by accuracy and skills.
Great tip! This was bugging me for some time. Flurry of punches>one or two haymakers
Are you kidding, power is everything
How did youtube know that ive been practicing punching in my room?
You've got a nice clean foundation, which is essential. When did you start boxing, how old are you now, and what is your amateur record?
I wish you guys had a gym in philly
basically, you want to use your speed to wound and open your opponent for the finishing blow in which you should focus some more power
After watching this guy for a bit kinda got me interested in MMA, but I think I might just learn self-defense. Plus it keeps you in tone, I'll condition my body. I'm 6'1 160lbs and have been conditioning my lungs more (running 2.4+miles per run)
There is no best way to punch. There is also no wrong way to punch if trained.
Might have to fight more than one guy soon. looking for pointers
Power is really important for punches
Impressive for someone to release that many punches within 3 secound also there is a disadvantage to moving your legs around that much if the enemy can take some shots and hit your legs you might just lose your balance and and fall and that's ganna be a problem
Can u please do a video on your boxing gear?
