Matt J, please test this yourself and kindly share results. Please clarify whether the gyroscopic meta-data works with only 30 fps or 24 fps, which is apparently the case with the a7c. Great if the Browse / Catalyst stabilization works with 60 fps footage, whether 4k or 1080p.

@@Deatarus51 reelsmart motion blur is great for that. Is used a lot on render CG since blur in render GC is extremely slow. Plus I think there are some free tools that do the same.
What will be great is using the same metadata info for this motion blur plugins to apply blur before the crop to avoid some additional crop when some unwanted artifact may appear. I think Sony can add that feature in their software if is a demand for it.

There's always a compromise although this is great. you're paying the price with cranking up your shutter so all the realistic motion blur is gone. Then cropping and lost of all the high quality we crave. I see this useful only to save a shot or 2. I don't see now going handheld because of this and not using a gimble. Not to mention the extra step to go through your files stable them then tweak then export. Nice to know we do have an option to save us in a pinch, but no way would I use this in a regular workflow. 🤙🏼 Thank you for this Brandon.

It has much deeper usability as a way to remove subtle shakes from traditionally stabilized shots (gimbal, steadicam, slider, auto rig). In cases with mild camera shake, you can use a 180 shutter angle and still get good results with Catalyst. As with all tools, it has strengths and drawbacks.

You can use the 180 degree shutter rule. It's just that the greater the stabilisation needed, the worse the motion blur becomes. If your shot is pretty stable to begin with, you don't need to crank up your shutter. It's the difference between getting shot with a high shutter speed vs not getting the shot at all.

Brandon - nice job on this. I can see special use cases for the post-gyro data approach but it is as cumbersome, even if the results are better, as going naked (no gimbal, etc.) and depending on AE/Premiere/FC to fix it in post. I'd much rather deal with the gear than depend on a later fix. Also - pumping up the shutting speed is poison with a lot of subjects.

This feature enables me to go handheld with my fx9 and get that "handheld feel" while still looking smooth. You just have to walk like a ninja so you don't shake the sensor with your footsteps. But I would love if Sony made a plug-in for NLE's (like Premiere Pro) so they could read the sensor data. The workflow as it's now is pretty slow, where you need to bring it into Catalyst and export every clip you want to stabilize.

That is AMAZING! I wonder if it's possible to then add interpolated motion blur in post. Usually when I try such things it shows some artifacts. But by recording in high frame rates such as 120fps, the software will have a lot more data to work with. Such thing for example is called "pixel motion blur" in Adobe After Effects. One major downside is that it's extremely slow to process. I'll have to test that out when I get my hands on the a7s iii..

Interpolated motion blur in post is based on analyzing vectors. Assuming you shooted in 120fps and you applied a catalyst stabilization, it would make the vector analyze between the foreground (running subject) and background even more accurate. I'm assuming it would work quite well except if the background has a lot of different pattern. It's a ton of frame to render so it would add more render time though.
