  • The Sony A7SIII Stabilization is pretty awesome with the new active mode and catalyst browse gyro data. But is it better than a gimbal?

    I just "upgraded" from a GH5 to an A7SIII, and I'm honestly shocked at how much more difficult it is to achieve steady hand-held footage with the A7SIII. I've been so spoiled with the GH5's IBIS, that I forgot that it wasn't something that all cameras had naturally. Sheeeeeshh

      Hey man, I was looking to upgrade my GH5 to an A7SIII for lowlight purposes but I was wondering about the difference regarding stabilization (I really really need a good stabilization because I have to shoot handheld, no gimbal, run&gun style, sometimes walking, for my documentary project). Your comment makes me really wonder... is the A7SIII capable enough ?

      @@kevinbrunet-lerouzic579 Damn ! Exact same holdup here. Same R&G application concerns, for large-scale commercial construction - deluxe hi-rise 25-50 floor apt/condo/offfice buildings - where camera has to be adaptive to various non-optimal/undesirable lighting environments/factors, and often handheld slowly walking around miscellaneous debris, litter, materials, equipment, across surfaces either non-graded (not-paved) or not yet finished surface quality. IBIS is not a nice-if-you-can-get-it option in those terrains, it's a necessity. In my case, *not* upgrading from GH5 - rather though have been seriously looking at both the Fuji XH2S or Panasonic S5 IIS but find myself lingering wandering back to considering A7S III since after all these years it *STILL* gets referred to in _many_ comparisons/reviews.
      The comparative sequence that eventually winds up on Catalyst Browse at (approx) 4:40 is a very encouraging transition IMHO. I'm no expert but that is a significantly noticeable stabilization difference that to me looks completely natural and usable. The A7S III's Phase-Detect Autofocus has become pretty much *notoriously* the existing de facto benchmark of comparison. _That still impresses me_ . Sorry for rambling so much, but this is not an easy decision - I *liked* ur comment as not an inquiry by yet just another person who casually makes videos of themselves walking their dog in their backyard or raking leaves etc &/or other similar useless trivial clips I see in some of these so-called *review* clips. Thank you sir for your real world inquiry !!!

      @@trendscoutplus4584 hey man. I tested both cameras last week in a camerashop and ... GH5's IBIS can't be beaten... Period. Lowlight ability of A7s3 is fantastic, but I can have very good results with a second GH5s (special version for lowlight), option that gives me a spare body in case of a problem.
      Buying an A7S3 + lens is way more expensive, doesnt give me a spare body, i'm loosing on the stabilisation side, gaining on the lowlight one but is it worth it ? Not for me. And the A7s3 combo is way heavier, which IS really exhausting after long shoots R&G.
      Both cameras shoot in 4K 4:2:2 10bits... Both images are very similar in normal conditions... Actually comparing them in real life gave me an exhibit A answer !
      Remember :
      A7s3 + 24-70 F2.8 = 7000€
      GH5s + 12-35 F2.8 + 35-100 F2.8 = half the price and you get spare body and lenses !
      That's all for my case.

    • @matrixate
      @matrixate Рік тому

      Yep. GH5 is known for having superior stabilization. No Sony comes close; however, the Sony is superior for low light. The solution is to have both cameras. I hope you didn't sell your GH5 because that is a very capable camera for professional work.

    You can export from Catalyst in "XAVC Intra" "Class 300" which is marked "Planar 4:2:2 YUV 10-bits LE". It looks full quality to me. Or I am wrong ? For me, the most difficult about using catalyst in post is that you can't be sure of your framing when you shoot.

    Active mode looks best. Catalyst Brows makes the video file look really soft like you're shooting with a 1080p camera from 1999 and when the footage isn't soft it has a strange fuzzy artifacting when correcting shaky video. It's so distracting it makes the footage unusable. But I like the Active Mode. Thanks for the video. I'm rally thinking about picking up an A7SIII for video.

    I wrote to DJI and asked if their RSC2 and/or RSN gimbals worked with the IBIS and Active Stabilization in the Sony A7Siii. They wrote the following:
    "After checking with our senior engineers, the 5-axis in-body image stabilization will automatically turn off, but the image stabilization of the lens will work normally as long as it is turned on. So the IBIS and Active Stabilization won't work, however, the OOS lens will not be affected."
    This is a very confusing comment since your testing shows better outcomes when IBIS+Active Stabilization is combined with a gimbal. Do you have any idea what is going on ?

    • @MarcTaraz

    Stabilizing using software is notorious for CROPPING the video. I have the Sony a7c. Also have the DJI Pocket 2 (which has a larger sensor than Apple/Samsung flagship smartphones), which can record in 4k 30/60fps and it's a smart pocket size 4k gimbal camera which won't draw attention when you use it to record because it's so discreet. Saves carrying a bulky gimbal which is a hassle to set up, or relying on software.

    i will choose active mode or use a gimbal instead, because increase in shutter speed for gyro will sacrifice the income of light, you may shoot in daylight open wide for sure, but in low light, this is such a pain, especially if i need F/4 - F5.6 telling an landscape or else, increasing shutter speed means i have to boost ISO, the more ISO the more noisy video, not great in low light.

  • @byRobertEklund
    @byRobertEklund 2 роки тому +2

    Thank you for this clear and so well edited video. The combination Catalyst+motion blur is such a disappointment: already in the FX9 the catalyst stabilization made this weird and unpleasant motion blur related artifacts, and as the motion is not present, on really does not understand the blur. Probably the best way to go is with gimbal. Coming from the GH5 I am so interested in the a7sIII .... full frame, good AF, 120 fps etc. .... but I have not seen yet a video that makes me fall in love with the a7sIII .... in particular when there is motion, like a smooth panning, the movement rendition is a bit shoppy, not smooth.

    Hey Marc, since the description says that you have as well a Ronin-SC, I am curious if you tried to pair it with the a7siii? Does it work properly? Focus wheel & Recording button on the Ronin-SC usable?

    • @MarcTaraz
      @MarcTaraz  3 роки тому +1

      I haven't plugged in my a7siii to the SC because it wasn't supported at the time. It's possible they've come out with firmware for the camera since then, but I've been using the RS2 since then

      Sadly no, you have to stabilize each clip individually and export individually. No batch stabilization or export, you have to do it 1 by 1. Maybe sony will update this in the future

      Not many of Sonys lenses are stabilized because they tend to prioritize the in body stabilization. I do shoot a decent amount handheld, usually in slow motion frame rates, and then some stabilization in post, and I’ve found it works really well.
