    I was at the museum filming my two young kids running around. Saw somebody else using another camera brand filming his kids with a gimbal. I respect his dedication but for me, I whip out my A7IV or ZV1, film the kids and their mayhem without a worry in the world, come home, and stabilise my videos in catalyst browse. My wife thinks they look epic with the smooth buttery gimbal like results. Thanks Mark for your great videos!

    Thanks so much for a thorough overview and tutorial on how to use this software.
    I have an A7C and tested Catalyst Browse vs Davinci Resolve stabilization on a number of walking and talking vlog videos. Catalyst Browse has better stabilization thanks to the gyro data and I think it's pretty amazing, but, I feel like the Resolve stabilization is 80-90% similar, while also having a much faster workflow. I do notice some wobbly corners with Resolve's stabilizer, but for a vlog style video, no one's really going to notice. It's awesome we have this option from Sony, though!

    Thank you for that very helpful introduction to catalyst browse. The first time I've stabilized one of my Sony 10-20mm G videos I seriously thought "WHAT THE FOHK!?!", that looks sooo clean and smooth! Night/day difference! I'm super happy now!
    Altough I cannot stabilize footage made with my Sony 70-350mm G, as that lens somehow doesn't record gyrodata. I thought you can do this with all Sony G lenses. But it's ok, for tele I'd mostly use OSS and/or tripod anyway... Cheers! 🙂

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  Рік тому

      You have to turn off the stabilization - if you have lens stabilization on (or standard stabilization in the camera) the gyro data will not record

    • @miabaerfilm
      @miabaerfilm Рік тому

      @@MarkBennettCameraCrisis after testing i feel like its more effective for tele (above 70mm) when using lens OSS + stabilize in post with davinci.
      Turning off lens OSS on a tele gives very shaky footage so catalyst has a hard time and might have to crop significantly to compensate.

    Aloha Mark!
    Huge fan of your videos! I was wondering why you're so funny, and after some digging found out that your comedian haha! I've watched every single video on the Sony ZVE known to man. I bought the camera and sigma lense off your links. I film all my videos on Gopro so it took me a while to learn how to use the ZVE. But I did it and I love the picture, but when it comes to walking and talking, or holding the camera still, I can't hold it steady to save my life. I just followed your tutorial on Catalyst browse, and it took me 3:40 to run a 1 minute clip through it. I also bought the M3 gimbal, but it takes so long to set it up. I can't get it to balance correctly with a mic and sigma lense and am afraid of breaking it by running it unbalanced lol.
    I was looking at the Nikon Z30 because of it its stabilization, but after watching your video on it compared to the ZVE, it doesn't seem like its much better.
    Anyway, this past 2 weeks I've been watching all your videos on the ZVE and obsessing over it, but sadly I think I need to return it, and get something with better stabilization. Without needing a gimbal setup.
    Do you have any recommendations?
    Or am I spoiled from GoPro, and should continue to use it for my camping, walk n talk videos?
    Thanks for you time :)

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  2 роки тому +1

      Cameras just aren’t able to do what the GoPro does (unless using catalyst with Sony). So I would stick with the GoPro for ultimate stabilization. Z30, ZV-E10, Canon R10 - all pretty bad. Something like a Panasonic g85 has really good stabilization for a camera - but they autofocus is terrible. The Olympus EM1 mark ii (and iii) is good with stabilization and autofocus, but the video features aren’t amazing. But it does do nice 4K and for vlogs it will likely be one of the best choices. So my advice would be keep the GoPro going or looks at a used Olympus EM1 mark ii with a wide lens

    One thing I've discovered (which I don't think you note, but apologies if so) is that you can't stabilize clips if you've shot them using the 100 or 120fps options. It only seems to work with the Super35mm flagged ones.

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  2 роки тому +2

      I may not have mentioned that in this - but that is true. You can only stabilize up to 60fps. which, of course is ok and footage slowed down to 100 or 120 is usually very stable regardless.

If you brought in squished anamorphic footage (looks like Moment is developing an anamorphic adapter to work with existing lenses, which means if the existing lens has AF, there would be gyro meta data recorded as well) into Catalyst Browse, do you think it'll do a good job of stabilizing it and look normal after unsquishing the anamorphic footage?

    Hi Mark I don't know if you mentioned it before, but today I did a test (video on the way) and I forgot the camera in Airplane Mode because I was using the gimbal last night and surprise surprise, all the video shoot today are without geo that means CB is not able to stabilize because there no metatag. Obviously in Airplane Mode Geo is off as well 😞

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Tony, I just tested to double check, but airplane mode on or off does not affect the ability to record the Gyro. If the info did not record, it was because stabilization was on in some way or the connectors had an issue. So if you were using a lens with autofocus, and had all stabilization turned off, and you were recording in 60fps or less, then I would suggest taking off your lens, brush the connectors on the lens and the camera with a camera brush (or use an air blower) and reattach. Then test it out.

    About the flicker, apart from matching the fps to the venue, I think your shutter speed also has to be a multiple of the fps. This is easy in PAL countries, because every camera has 1/125s. But for NTSC, it gets tricky unless your camera has shutter angle. I am in PAL 50Hz country, so it makes sense to record in 25FPS but there is one venue I record at that has a giant monitor screen on stage that runs at 30FPS (29.97 to be exact) and I can only shoot at 1/60 seconds shutter speed at that place. I tried 1/125 seconds and there was some flickering - not enough to cause an epilepsy but enough to be distracting.

    I am using M1 MacBook Pro from 2020. Back in June it worked fine, but now I try to stabilize the remaining footage from the previous shot, and it just won't export. I selected the export options, and clicked "OK" on the popup window with the freshly stabilized video selected, but then nothing happens after I hit "OK". No progress bar on the top section of Browse, nothing. Just classic Sony software.

    Thanks Mark! Got the ZV-E10 and paired it with Tamron 11-20mm f2.8 after watching your videos. Catalyst browse works great with this combo 👍 I'm thinking of getting Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 that comes with lens vibration compensation "VC", so was thinking whether Catalyst Browse will work fine together with the VC? Thanks!

      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  2 роки тому +1

      I’m not sure. Catalyst sometimes works with lens stability and sometimes not. but honestly, if you are using catalyst browse, the lens stabilization won’t make a difference even if it works. I find it’s best to turn off all stabilization and let the gyro data work.

      it depends on your computer, but that would take 15 mins on my computer (2019 iMac)

    Hi Mark,
    I would like to ask you a question because I have just purchased a Sony ZV-E10 camera and I use "Catalyst Browse" to do my color correction.
    I downloaded my video files directly to my iMac's hard drive and did the color processing without difficulty.
    The problem is that when I do "EXPORT", my new video file created does not take into account the added effects?
    Does the camera have to be connected to the computer for this to work?
    I even clicked on "TRANSCODE SETTINGS", and it doesn't take anything into account in the export... do you have any idea?
    Thank you for your help.
    DRJ

    ZV-E10 or iPhone 13 pro max, I am thinking of going to a camera from my iPhone for my channel. My videos are mostly of beaches in Spain not blogging. Thanks Barry

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  2 роки тому +1

      I’m a fan of cameras, but they can be a fair amount of work and for your channel where you’re showing beaches in the bright sun - the iPhone will probably be better. great stabilization and great video and you won’t have to worry about things like ND filters and post stabilization or gimbals. Plus, the zv-e10 is not weather-sealed so it can’t get wet and blowing sand can also be a big problem. I would go with the IPhone 13 Pro or Pro Max.

    Hi Mark,
    Thank you so much for this video - it was REALLY helpful!
    Quick q's
    -Have you tried out the new Zhiyun Crane 3 and if so, do you think it would hold up the Sigma 16mm lens?
    -What lens would you recommend to get a fisheye look that most UA-camrs have when they film?
    Thank you!

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  2 роки тому

      Thanks!! The Crane M3 is arriving tomorrow for testing. But it will definitely hold up with the ZV-E10 and the Sigma 16mm. I would recommend the Tamron 11-20 f2.8 for a wide field of view. The UA-camrs don’t use true fish-eye lens they just use a wide lens. A fisheye is more circular and not a great look for vlogging, in my opinion.

    this was very helpful, thank you very much for putting it together. I do have a question. I follow your instructions on how to save the file to the T. In CB they changes are saved and after renaming it I can see that everything saved correctly. However when i click on the file to play in Quicktime the changes are not there. Just FYI I'm making the clips to upload to Instagram and YouTub. What am i missing ? Thanks for your help!

    Hi Mark, I appreciate this video. I've been stabilizing footage from the Sony ZV-1F for HOURS from a hiking vlog I did today. I did buy the Sony ZV-1F after thinking it would be a good vlogging / b-roll camera, but this experience is kinda making me wonder if I made a mistake. Should I have bought an action camera instead? I haven't even gotten into the edit yet. I did download the Catalyst Prepare trial, but even in that you can't batch analyze the footage (unless I'm missing something...).

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  Рік тому

      you can batch stabilize the footage in catalyst prepare. You just tick the number of files you want before export. I will say for a hiking vlog a GoPro (or DJI) would probably be the best thing. The footage will already be super smooth and they are designed for that type of thing.

    Hey, Mark! Quick question. I am shooting with my zve10 and when I loaded up catalyst browse, only some of my clips had the stabilization option. It wasn't an option for my 120 slow mo footage... have you experienced that before?
