People think it's for weight savings, but it's actually for aerodynamics. The bumpy surface of a logo creates just a bit of distortion to the air that goes to the windshield and towards the sides
I doubt it's for weight. Likely for aerodynamic reasons. There's no way they did that to save a few grams when all the driver has to do is take a sip of water before getting into the car to make the weight savings pointless.
It's definitely not for weight. If that was the case they would be using very basic paint. 18 layers can weigh kilos all up. It's almost certainly for aerodynamic flow over the bonnet. For downforce cars, little imperfections like the Merc logo can have a significant effect on aero features down stream, such as the cooling vent in front of the windshield or any vortex generators further down the car.
I always wondered. At the point where you take off the badge to save weight, wouldn’t it just be better to tell the owner to hit the gym and lose a few pounds?? I mean it probably has more of an effect than taking off the badge
I’ve never had a good impression about Shmee , too much forced smiling. For hm not to raise the aerodynamic implications, yet mention weight Is shockingly disappointing
I thought it would've had more to do with aerodynamics? I don't know the most on the topic, but I feel like a badge would disrupt the flow and possibly make it more turbulent. Having flat/smooth paint probably negates that
That weight is not going to do anything , its it's negligible, I would want a badge paying so much , the car should come with light weight boot and suite to save that weight and a dietitian if they wanna be technical 😂
I think having the badge painted rather than stuck on is more for less drag. The difference in weight between a plastic ring and 18 layers of paint I don't think would be enough to warrant painting over sticking on a piece of plastic. But when there's something stuck on, there's that bit which gets caught on the air when you're flying over 330 km/hr
I would imagine that it has less to do with weight and more to do with air turbulence. The badges create tiny disturbances in the air as it passes over the car, and the faster the car is traveling, the further that disturbance travels over the car impacting ducting and other lowered efficiencies.
