You should really watch Ash vs. Evil Dead, it's really awesome and adds alot of extra lore and mythos (like for example, it answers who wrote the book in the first place) and you'll definitely like the characters, each episode is only 20 minutes and there's only 3 seasons, highly recommend it, its hilarious
I love this franchise so much,I've recently started watching Ash Vs Evil dead and I'm mad that it was cancelled,I wish we got one more season but Bruce is retired from playing Ash
It's so great! For those who love Ash and want to see his character fully realized beyond the movies, it's a blast to watch. It has it's own great characters and moments, expands and answers some of the lore and brings the Evil Dead franchise together for me as an all time great .
A lot of people at the beginning of the Franchise like Army of Darkness the most because it’s the most friendly to general audiences. I felt the same way, but over time Evil Dead 2 became my favorite after plenty of rewatches
The more I watch the franchise the more I love the campiness of it. The show and Army of Darkness are my favorites, because Ash is this larger than life character than just the main survivor. Stuff like The dumb one liners are the best parts of the franchise for me
So, the problem with Evil Dead 2 was studio problems. They didn’t technically own the rights to their own film, so it’s a messy remake/sequel as a result.
Bruce said, you should watch evil dead 2 after he is flying through the trees, as it will line up with the events of Evil Dead 1. The very beginning was suppose to be a recap of the first but they didn’t have the rights to the first film so it doesn’t seem like it’s a recap cause the actors are different
@@Nunyabusiness40 I have always wanted to splice 1 + 2 together with Army, cutting at the part you mentioned in 2 where he is flying through the trees, then at the end when he goes through the portal, splice that part of AoD where he and the car are transported back in time, and viola! One continuous adventure.
@@charliechristensen6663 I seem to remember someone doing that a few years ago. I'm sure it's online somewhere. (you might have to go over to the shady side of town)
Right? I was confused when he complained about not seeing those people again. It never even crossed my mind and probably would've been very cheesy. I see no way that could've made the movie any better anyway. Me personally, I'd never go into a cabin in the woods again (but especially THAT cabin) once I was lucky enough to get out of the situation alive, so why would they? That scene always just felt it was there to explain the smell that was bothering Mia, that lead them to the basement, so they could find the book...and it'd be a good guess that one of those people is who probably wrote all the warnings in it and wrapped the book up...but of course there was the one dumb guy in the current group who couldn't leave it alone, lol.
The remake seemed more like a repeat of history. Like the book, the cabin, and the demons make these events happen over and over again. I could totally see ash hearing about what happened and teaming up with Mia to finish the demons off together. Perhaps with ash sacrificing himself to end the evil forces forever.
The crazy thing is that Ash and Mia *were* supposed to team up in Ash vs Evil Dead, but Mia's actress had already been preoccupied with other works, so that was when Raimi and Campbell came up with Kelly's character.
Yeah, you could kinda skip the first one. Army of Darkness works pretty well on its own, and Rise is a standalone film. It’s better to understand the franchise though, so definitely give the classics a watch if you can
I didn’t personally like the 2013 one that much. I totally understand what it was going for, and it very successfully does what it wanted to, and it is a good film. I just personally didn’t enjoy it as much. Then again, I prefer the comedy of Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness, so that’s probably why it’s not my favorite
I’m probably the only person who feels this way, but I think the first film is the best out of the original trilogy. I love how it took the horror in the film seriously compared to the other two where the makers added in comedic elements. Not that I hate the other two films, but I thought the slapstick humor ruined the horror elements in those films.
You're not the only one definitely prefer the first one the new ones were good as well I just wish they didn't make the deadites call people sluts and cunts kind of takes me out of the movie
Evil Dead 2 used to be my favorite but after a couple of years I found myself rewatching Army Of Darkness the most. It’s the most rewatchable, entertaining and unique. Although I don’t think 2013 and Rise are canon to the main trilogy. There is a multiverse, we know this because of Evil Dead The Game and comics, so yes, I do believe theirs a universe where the other two books in Army Of Darkness could be the 2013 and Rise books but the universe we see play out in the main film trilogy is Ash’s own adventure. Mia survives her own nightmare in her own universe and Beth is having family problems in hers
This video was fantastic. I did exactly what you did a few years ago with the series, just to see what the hype was all about, and had a very similar experience. It was really exciting and cool to relive that in your video. Evil Dead is now my favorite series ever, and I hope it grabbed onto you and never lets go like it did for me :) You’ll know when in a few years you’re watching DVD commentary, or buying Evil Dead merch, or even checking out Evil Dead: The Musical (which is actually really awesome too). Keep up the great work, man.
The only other NC-17 movie I've seen that comes close to the horrors of Evil Dead is Showgirls. Lol Ok seeing Jessie from Saved By The Bell bouncing, like literally bouncing, around in her birthday suit was anything but horrifying. Lol
This is a very interesting and entertaining look at Evil Dead. I really like how you tired to connect the other two movies with the original three, I hope you do a video on Ash VS Evil Dead as I believe that deserves more recognition. Thank you for this well edited video.
I like the 2013 remake I love it how straight forward to the original it has ash in the ending and he says groovy at the end and mia she's awesome and kick some deadites ass
I do not agree with Rise rating higher than the 2013 remake. I much prefer the 2013, I felt like they did a much better job fleshing it out. The kids finding the book in a bank vault that happened to be underneath their crumbling apartment during an earthquake… that felt cheap.
I am an Evil Dead 2 fan! Love all of it, but this was my favorite. As far as the strangest experience of a series. I was eight years old in a movie rental store when I accidentally rented Evil Dead 2 thinking I was re-renting the first film. That was a trip! I fell in love with Bruce Campbell and onward I went 😂 He never disappoints. The guy is just straight up groovy!
The very first Evil Dead was made about a mile down the road from where I grew up. The cabin’s gone now, but it was a cool place to visit after the movie came out.
Evil Dead is my favorite horror saga. Really like the new flicks, that return to form and forget about the humor (which I like in the old ones) and are straight up horror.
When I was little horror movies were how me and my dad bonded. When my mom was away he would let me watch a horror movie and The Evil Dead series (wasn’t a franchise at the time lol) was one of the first we watched and I’ve loved them ever sense. The evil dead rise might be my favorite out of all of them (mainly because I prefer horror over comedy but I could see how ED2 or AOD would be most peoples favorites) just because of the lore of the 3 books coming back into play. I really hope this one gets a sequel where we follow the history of the books and get deadites in new and interesting places rather than just a cabin in the woods, though if the story is good it shouldn’t matter where it’s set.
I found your channel the other day, and I’ve watched load of your videos already, which of all been great. However, the most surprising thing is that you’ve never seen the evil dead movies!
Evil Dead 2's one of my favorites. Its so creative and insane. Poor Ash's suffering, being beaten and broken down the entire time to insanity. His screams are amazing, his acting is on fire here. So many things happen, nothing feels wasted, even the camera is evil. The sound design is awesome. Its non stop misery, I love love love it
I love this franchise, especially as a Michigander myself. It's absolute insanity in pure form. The second and third movie(Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness/Medieval Dead) played part as major inspiration for my work when delving into supernatural horror comedy. Ash Vs Evil Dead is the reason why I want to borrow a friend's Starz account, and I do appreciate the 2013 remake getting a ton of praise one decade later. Before getting into Evil Dead as a legalized adult, I grew up with Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy throughout childhood to mid teens. Nowadays, I adore horror for what it's been for years especially since indie movies have become the new normal with studios such as A24, Neon, and Skydance. Evil Dead was that much of a phenomenon after becoming controversial(especially in the UK where it was banned) when the first movie released, then recoiling with Evil Dead 2. I vaguely know the ReBoot episode with the zombie game and Resident Evil VII Biohazard; and it was so refreshing. Come to think of it, DMC5 should really have a mod where Nero gets a chainsaw-themed Devil Breaker from Nico as an homage to this brilliant series.
The first two Evil Dead movies 🎥 weren't given a rating when they originally came out, because Sam Raimi didn't want the movies to get a X rating from MPAA. Only the Army of Darkness got a R rating.
I never had an interest in the Evil Dead franchise back in the 80s as a teenager then. Now, in my early 50s, I am interested in the Evil Dead universe. This video was helpful & the perfect guide to this franchise. I'm planning to watch all of the ED movies during Memorial Day weekend. I have been a horror/slasher fan for a long time. Thanks for posting🎞
I only saw the 2013 remake & the new one but 2013 is still my fav! So thanks for this! I think you would like the show Yellowjackets & I’d love to see you cover it!
You should definitely watch Ash Vs Evil Deaf if Army is your favourite, it’s that tone for a whole series that’s hilarious and has genuine horror in it
I love how the director of the new film saw that one scene in Army of Darkness and found a way to connect each film into one cannon vs just being remakes/reimaginings or one offs.
Maybe been mentioned in the comments already, but in an interview, Bruce Campbell has explained that Evil Dead 2 was a remake, not a sequel. They didn't have the rights to the first movie and the second had different producers and distributors. Raimi was able to do a lot of things he couldn't in the first one, and honestly, I think it's one of the best blends of horror and comedy I've ever seen. AOD leaned way too heavily into the comedy and was too silly to be scary, so 2 has always been my favorite.
Evil Dead 1 was this movie in my childhood that the cool kids knew about but nobody had seen it. It was banned in my country and the only way to obtain it was to find someone with a copy and make another copy with two vha players. It wasn't until the early days of file sharing that I saw it the first time as a teen and ir blew my mind. The file quality was horrible but the movie was so drastic and manacing for that time. Became one of my favourite movies and to this day I can recite some of the dialogs.
Remember in evil dead original, ash gets taken by the Deadites and Evil Dead 2 picks shows us what he goes through and due to Ash being the chosen one , is able to fend off the possession (it’s why I think Mia is also a chosen one)
just wanted to let you know there is also an Evil Dead musical which is incredibly hilarious and i would definitely recommend you give the soundtrack a listen to. It's basically the original trilogy with more comedy, less horror, very enjoyable
What you need to know about evil dead 2 is that it's basically a do over movie of the first. they even poke fun at this fact in the show Ash vs evil dead.
Evil Dead 1 has a lot of hidden story elements to it regarding Ashes growth as a character (or regression depending on how you look at it). Upon first inspection it may seem the other characters are just set dressing, but that is very inaccurate. Scotty's personality is a lot more akin to how Ash is in 2 or Army of Darkness, a bit crazy, ready to kill what needs to be killed with little hesitation, though kind of an ass and a bit cowardly at points. It is very heavily implied Ash developed this personality archetype because of Scotty, as the two are best friends. The best part this can be seen is during Ashes initial "cowardly" state in the first film (Ash cowering while Scotty slices up Shelly) compared to Ashes sudden change at the end of 1 (getting the rifle, trying to fight back) and then all the way into 2. Linda in the first film is a huge part of Ashes character as well (the later recasts not so much) as the spin-off games and other media make it clear the love he had for her and the fact he can't find someone else like her. As a huge Evil Dead fan it obviously takes some looking into, but the first film's story and characters very much connect to how Ash is later in the series, and is a fantastic origin. Ash originally wasn't even meant to be the hero but due to circumstances was the last survivor, and it not only subverted expectations, but made one of the greatest horror icons of all time. The story of these films may be confusing, but it all does connect in a truly awesome way. Bruce Campbell said the recaps aren't canon as well.
Nothing to do with movies, but watching the footage from the game, made me remember my feelings on it, in that for a multiplayer focused game, it was actually good, and I could tell the team behind it loved the series. I can only imagine the game they could have given us not being forced to do multiplayer.
I love the evil dead franchise. Evil dead 2 was first I watch on TV when I was teenager over 20 years ago fell in love with it. Since last year been playing evil dead game and instantly fell back in love franchise got back watching evil dead movies again. Also you should see TV series but only 3 seasons it called ash Vs evil dead and be honest not feel like TV show it feel more like shirt mini horror movie and dies follow from three original movies and great gire, comedy horror it well worth a watch
oh course Rami is gonna be careful. He's been working on them since he was in college. In the Woods was a proof of concept that got him the green-light for The Evil Dead. This isn't just a movie franchise. This is Rami's baby. And Bruce Cambell is the awkward but charismatic uncle.
So the original Evil Dead movies were each produced by different studios which left Raimi unable to possess the rights to the the movies (a problem that would carry on to Ash vs. Evil Dead in which they couldn't make direct references to Army of Darkness with some exceptions). The incontinuity is fixed if you chop off the recap and ending of Evil Dead 2. I believe someone made a supercut of all three films so it would be seamless. Also, in spite of the franchise being held in cult praise, Army of Darkness flopped because people didn't know it was a sequel. This was due in part to the title change from Medieval Dead which was done because the executives at Universal wanted AoD to stand as a standalone movie, which is insane. There was an original version of the script where half of the movie would be a remake of Evil Dead, but Raimi got permsission to just make AoD a sequel, though the title change had to stay for some reason. Also, fun tidbit, Evil Dead was _the_ movie with the cabin in the woods. It's the same as Dr. Sivana popularizing the mad scientist villain. The movie was so controversial because of its graphic imagery that it made the news. You ever see that clip of that woman bashing Tarantino for violence and language in their interview? It's like that.
Evil Dead was the “trope maker” for many of the cabin in the woods and modern horror movies, which is why it seems cliche. It was also Rami’s first professional movie, and you see his later work evident here with the camera and beating the crap out of Bruce Campbell.
Ok I remember in the mid 90’s (movie could have been from the 80’s) watching a movies where this guy had a shotgun in a closet that was a dark portal with flying creatures that he shot. I know it’s not the best description but is that an evil dead movie?
OH HELL YEAH!! My favorite trilogy being covered by one of my favorite analysis channels! I figure this is a fantastic opportunity to talk about my special fan cut of the first three movies. There was an interview where Bruce explained how you can line up and cut the three films into a seamless mega movie. So I did that very thing! ua-cam.com/video/-TNf-p41rjs/v-deo.htmlsi=DX6rT1N9HsN_ucuO this is a UA-cam video showing how I lined up each of the cuts with text labeling which film is on screen, at the end I also included how I did a special end credits for the mega movie too! Then in the description there is a link to the full movie on google drive, which I lovingly named ‘The Evil Dead Killogy’ I hope you all enjoy it :)
This is just my personal feeling but i feel like people went into the evil dead remake expecting it to be campy like the older ones. And im not saying it was a great movie but i went into it expecting it to be like a modern horror movie. And tbh i love the remake. I wish it had a higher score The whole 1 and 2 thing. I usually tell peoplr to just watch 2 then watch army of darkness then the tv show. Bruce Campbell says because of the whole rights issue that there is a proper way to watch 1 and 2 but unless you know "watch when the demon cam goes to ashes face and thats when the sequel starts" then id just go with 2. It is one of those franchises i will always like. I still wear a evil dead shirt. I got dvd copies of the films. When i started Journaling i saw journals with the necronomicon face. Its a solid, fun, bloodfest, franchise.

I only saw the 2013 remake & the new one but 2013 is still my fav! So thanks for this! I think you would like the show Yellowjackets & I’d love to see you cover it!
I’ve been watching that! When season 2 comes to a close I’m gonna make a video on it!
@@thethriftytypewriter yay!! I can’t wait!!
So glad you made a video on evil dead but you NEED to watch the tv show as well. It has the best version of ash’s character
It's cool because Resident Evil 7 Biohazard use this film as a vase line, the car, the house the cutting of Ethan's hand etc.
Evil Dead 2 is still the Greatest, love em all though
I also saw all they previous movies for the first time and it was great! Also really liked Rise
just wanted to let you know there is also an Evil Dead musical which is incredibly hilarious and i would definitely recommend you give the soundtrack a listen to. It's basically the original trilogy with more comedy, less horror, very enjoyable
What you need to know about evil dead 2 is that it's basically a do over movie of the first. they even poke fun at this fact in the show Ash vs evil dead.
Evil Dead Rise was cool I like the change of setting
Evile dead is 10/10
Great video
dang that footage from the game is sooo old. That was back when support ash could still get his healing from hitting enemies in a finisher. dang....
The Ash Vs Evil Dead tv show is a must watch, all campy horror comedy at its finest
The way i rationalize 2 is evil dead is like a pilot for a tv show and 2 is the true first movie
Evil dead 2 is what rami wanted the first to be but due to budget wasn't and the second is the best in my opinion
Nothing to do with movies, but watching the footage from the game, made me remember my feelings on it, in that for a multiplayer focused game, it was actually good, and I could tell the team behind it loved the series. I can only imagine the game they could have given us not being forced to do multiplayer.
Wish Ash vs Evil dead was in this, but excellent video sir
We need the Ash vs Evil dead series review!! 🙏🏽
Bruce Campbell looked a little like Rick Grimes there while he was holding the shotgun in army of darkness
fuck i wish i could watch all of these again for the first time. i hope you enjoyed them, they're a fuckin ride!
Army of Darkness is the second best movie ever made , next to Blazing Saddles
In 2013 the cabin is not actually the Knowby cabin
The cabin is from Mias family and the researcher is different
You should've gave a section to the TV series
Im still wondering why you never gave it a chance
I cant get it out of my head, Thats Uncle Bens Car From Spiderman ❤️
Hope you watched Ash vs Evil Dead by now, its a dark hilarious show
I love the evil dead franchise.
You got to watch the Stars TV series Ash vs The Evil Dead. I do not know what movie that series is after but it is part of the Evil Dead universe.
If you don't wanna read the book maybe you should check if there's any movies, I think I saw a VCR and an old VHS tape. That might be fun!
Ash Vs gives you a lot of answers on the Necronomicon.
oh course Rami is gonna be careful.
He's been working on them since he was in college.
In the Woods was a proof of concept that got him the green-light for The Evil Dead.
This isn't just a movie franchise.
This is Rami's baby.
And Bruce Cambell is the awkward but charismatic uncle.
The reason why they can’t burn the book is because it’s made out of witch craft
the car... its in every film by the director.
Dont know if anyone else have made this point, but it realy seems that Cabin in the Woods is a "part" of this franchise if you ask me.
I saw the remake in theaters in high school and holy shit did it freak me out
Ok I remember in the mid 90’s (movie could have been from the 80’s) watching a movies where this guy had a shotgun in a closet that was a dark portal with flying creatures that he shot.
The series is pretty good. Recommended.
Ash is my favorite hero character
It’s funny, because my favorite one was the 2013 remake!
This is just my personal feeling but i feel like people went into the evil dead remake expecting it to be campy like the older ones. And im not saying it was a great movie but i went into it expecting it to be like a modern horror movie. And tbh i love the remake. I wish it had a higher score
The whole 1 and 2 thing.
Can you talk about the 2 sequel comics to Freddy vs Jason? Freddy vs Jason vs Ash and it's sequel Nightmare Warriors.
Groovy!
