  • Time to redo some old furniture Hamptons Style!
This video goes through how to change an old drab cabinet and matching coffee table into a modern Hamptons Style matching set.
I use super basic materials. Both cost approximately $30 and some time and energy.
Edit* I have learnt a lot on my furniture flipping journey. I would always sand all surfaces now as the paint adheres better for longevity of the piece. While I used a paint that said no sanding is needed, and the paint has lasted well on this piece, I still feel that it is worth a light sand before painting.

Thanks for the inspiration! Of note, you could try an airless spray system (a Wagner or the like) that will make the spraying easier and more uniform than spray cans. It will also make the painting more cost effective in the long term as spray cans are expensive!

Yes I have come a long way since that video. I have a Wegner and its 100% better. I also do a much better job at all of the prep since that project as well.

You said the clear coat on top would not add any colour but i feel it makes it slightly darker for sure. What do you reckon?

It doesn’t have any colour in it, but it does add sheen I guess. Just like if you wet raw timber. Many oil based clear coats are yellow and make timber have a more yellow (sometimes even orange) tone.

Nothing is invisible. If you want it to appear raw then you would have to leave it uncoated. But then you risk stains and make it impossible to clean effectively. I just find the clear water based varnish is the best way to stay as close to natural as possible while still protecting the timber.
