  • In this video, I am making over this commission dining room table and chairs using Rustoleum Chalk Paint and MinWax Stain. Dining chairs are officially my arch enemy when it comes to using a brush to paint them. This set definitely tested my patience! I hope you learned a few things about refinishing a table and chairs! This is a great idea to save some money and flip the dining room table you may have already in your home! Let me know down in the comments about your experiences with similar flips. Thanks for watching!

    Looks great! I'm hoping to do my own dining room table in the same way. I like the clean look (not distressed) and will also do a darker stain, but this video definitely gives me a more realistic idea of how long it will actually take. Love watching your channel, keep up the outstanding work! I'm learning so much!

    Lauren - this is an awesome job. You put your heart and soul into it. Its all a learning curve and you did well!! Maybe next time you could say, with a job like this the cost will be between 500- $600 depending on your time invested. That way if you find it takes longer, you're not undercutting yourself. Anyway I am truly impressed, and I can see how weary you are- it was a large project for you, so I hope you can have a few days rest before then next flip? Good on you for your beautiful handiwork. Many Blessings to you and Neiman from Australia. Take care and Go gently. xx

    Great job! A little hint: I do 2 coats of BIN shellac primer when painting white. That second coat does amazing and will cut down on coats of white. Also I have the store add 65 drops of black to a "gallon" (15 drops to a quart) as the BIN has a yellow cast and the light grey (after adding the black) makes the white paint brighter!

    Hello I'm not an expert on doing furniture at all. but I did the same thing.o that you did on a very small scale .only four chairs and a table but what I did was prep and paint all the white first .then sand it off the seats and table top so if I got any white paint on them I just sanded it off. So I did the opposite of you.

    Great work and yes I’ve done a set and they are “big” project! They just take a lot longer because of how big the table is and all the chairs! Maybe if you broke down the cost for each piece individually and the time you spent approximately on, just the table, just the chairs and just the bench you could figure out a price for each in the future. There is a huge difference between say 4 chairs and 7 plus a bench. Please it was a family friend! In the end, I think the pricing was fair. It was a lot of work but it looks amazing 🤩

    Just watching today’s video. Listen to an old lady: don’t use water based top coat - ever. I did on my kitchen table when it was new. Why, you ask. It was too shiny bright for my kitchen. Water based gets sticky in the humidity of summer. Enough so that all summer I was scrubbing the table 4, 5, 6 times a day as it would collect cat hair. Yeah! Just try keeping cats off the table. Frankly, it was disgusting. A friend used it on a wooden rocker. It wasn’t some place you wanted to sit. Maybe summer doesn’t bring high humidity where you are but come July here, it’s darn near raining inside! BTW: you inspired me to tackle refinishing the dining room chairs I’ve been planning to do for about 45 years. They aren’t in perfect shape (about 100 years old). But I’m not either.

      @@karleefuchs6670 : as I mentioned in my original comment, I used a water based clear coat on my kitchen table. It’s OK this time of year but when the heat of the summer coupled with high humidity arrived, the surface became gummy and cat fur plus the grey litter dust from their paws was positively gross. I was constantly scrubbing the table top - every time I entered the kitchen. Don’t know how it stands up on paintings but probably fine. I use oils so can’t apply water base over it.

    I've been stripping, building and refinishing furniture for over 20 years and wanted to just offer some friendly advise. It's very important to never sand wood to remove a finish in preparation for stain. It's great if you're painting, but sanding, especially with an 80 grit paper scars the wood, especially when applying pressure. This is why your table top came out uneven and with some darker spots. I used to make this same mistake. The best option is to use a furniture stripper, then a 220 or higher paper by hand to prepare the wood without scarring it, without applying pressure. Wipe on poly is my favorite finish, but not ideal for a table, it will wear away with time. To save time you can purchase a stain with a poly in it.

    • @rhondadavis1483
      @rhondadavis1483 2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Tammy for all these tips with your experience. I also use a stripper for the ones I’m going to stain. I only sand after I’ve stripped it. You’ve confirmed what I’ve been doing for a couple years. And def a stain with poly. Much easier

Obviously you are quite experienced with a sprayer since doing this set (I just watched you do the crib with the Graco one, which is definitely a more advanced sprayer), but this is a great tutorial for those just starting out, or prefer to hand paint vs spraying. Congrats on the success you’ve had this year and can’t wait to see what 2022 brings for you and Neiman!💜

    I am in a very similar situation. Creating a farmhouse look for a small dining set for my friend and her family. She asked for the rough estimate on the total cost for me to do this... (mind you ...this would be my 1st ever commissioned work). I told her about $175. Now that you said $450...i feel like I priced it too low. What do you think? Should I tell her a higher price? I never saw the piece in person until I picked it up. And she lives in a nice area too.
    Thank you! The table set I am working on isnt real wood. Not sure if that plays apart in it. 🙈🙈

My kitchen is beautiful for me and the thing is that I am tire of the color. Its all the dark color of that table, and my gabinets are from Caoba, that is in spanish the tipe of wood, and i would like another color on them, they have 38 yrs and still the same because I clean them every 3 months and pass the dark Old Enghish oíl to them. And we didnt have kids, so everything last for very several years as New. I know is July 2022, but we made the house and and I choose them, I still like them but tired of the darker. Could you recomend me some colors for up and down? Thanks a lots, because I would not trust any one else.

    I used to do this about 10-15 years ago, but I wish I had had the awesome paints you have available to you now. But I cringe every time I see you kneel on the concrete. I sincerely advise you to invest in a nice pair of knee pads. Your future arthritis pained knees will thank you later. I just had the 4th surgery on my knees and I will need at least one more, my second knee replacement, before I am done. I just had a cleaning out surgery last week and I am in a tremendous amount of pain. At least put some kind of foam pad on the ground when you kneel. Protect those knees as much as you protect every other part of yourself. Please!

    Here's an old body working trick when sanding with a duel action sander move the sander with longer strokes looking for a cooler surface continuously so the paper doesn't clogg so fast. With this method you can apply a little more pressure and really feel it cutting through. Fastest way I know, imagine sanding a whole truck inside and out.

    The paper and tape part.. autobody shops have a stand that holds both and puts them together as you pull. It even cut the paper with an upward pull.. you may want to look into one of those.
