This is NOT the Average American back yard!! But, the backyard of designers. Really great ideas which is what the whole video was promoting/selling. I especially liked the vertical plant walls and sunken aspects. Bring more!
Love your imagination this is what life is to be......creating and sharing to help others go forward to achieve their paradise at home.....spend $$ in back our yards and enjoy our homes without having to travel!!!!!!!!And be stressed about going home.
Thanks Patty! Yes, exactly!! Step outside and enjoy instead of feeling like u need to escape town to relax. Thanks for being part of our community. Have a nice night
Oh my goodness -- what NOT to like?! I will need to watch this several times. I loved seeing the different water features (and hearing them) and the ideas regarding shade or rain cover for a pergola. We're going to have a bar and use your idea of having a "see through" bar so you can through to the backyard. I also love the various ideas using the planter boxes. I'm working on a new design and haven't figured out where the herbs can go. Bravo to you!
Thank you SO MUCH Christii! I really appreciate that u have taken the time to comment to all of the community! Thank you again and please let me know if u have any questions as you move forward with your project. I LOVE that u are starting with the Design of the space as that is essential 👌
Creating a focal point/destination that's visible from inside the house. Such a simple notion but adds such appeal. Great work! Thanks for the video and ideas!
Thank you Kaya - Those sight lines from inside are a cool perspective to think about. Years ago, people use to look at their lawns/flower beds from inside their windows, now they are doing the same with focal point elements. Thank you for watching and commenting! We appreciate your feedback.
Building a covered outdoor space for our patio is definitely high on my list. I want to be able to BBQ year round using my pellet grill even if it's raining or snowing. You've given me some good ideas to start with.
This was a well made video that offered so many great ideas and options. Some of my favorites were adding a bar, adding water features like the vases or water coming out of stone. I also loved adding an element of fire. it is a huge draw to the backyard. Beautifully done video!
Yes I loved it Well worth the advice of a designer Thank you - how clever is the bar. For budgeted comment ok I picked up plants for privacy 4 tall trees will suit my grey spot and fit well
We agree Deborah! It's a super cool look - very unique! I agree about the full-range view too. I like to know what's going on around me while enjoying the beautiful day. Thank you for your viewpoint!
Thank you for the video. I am about to start a complete garden renovation without a garden designer. I have done a lot of research and drawings but your video really many consider other points. So many ideas! Being aware of destinations in the garden really focused my mind.
I am always watching your videos even Im washing dishes. I love it. I have a huge patio and front and backyard but for it’s boring. I want to make a huge make over of it. Precy here of Roswell NM
Happy to meet you Precy! Thank u for watching. Please let me know if I can help u at all with your space. Feel free to reach out if u have any questions. Have a wonderful day
These are all good options but I wanna circle back to the water features. Good examples but most shown were quite expensive depending on the clients. A very easy and inexpensive option would be to create patio ponds or potted ponds. Here you can create pond ecosystems with plants and fish and still retain that white water noise. Patio ponds also look great side by side to other potted plants.
very information for someone who think about designing an outdoor space. I have seen many who realize this after cement and mortar is poured. This video provide all possible ingredients to add to your backyard so you don't sell yourself short.
Thank you Carol! I appreciate you commenting SO MUCH! Thank you for being a part of our community and for letting us know what you liked! Have the best day 😊
I'm just in the middle of designing a patio kitchen/bar for a client, so this was timely and inspiring. Great ideas. I think the privacy is a key element. In urban settings, privacy is the one thing we lack. Any time I can design to add more privacy, that's always good. All the other stuff is great, but without privacy, who wants to be out there? Just my thoughts.
Thanks so much for the video explaining and showing these great backyard designs. As a DIYer every year I am doing a project at my place and I always love ideas on construction and design. Thanks again for sharing.
Great video! I have new construction next to me close to the property line. In one spot I am planning a pergola that will be slatted in the back like the one you've shown. The roof will be pitched also to hide the neighbor's towering roofline. It's such a perfect focal point AND usable space! Thanks for all the great ideas as usual 😉
My favorite was the sunken in office that you did on #10 secret. Very good idea and use of space. Thank you for all of the ideas though.... I liked them ALL♥️
I love the look of pergolas! Always wanted one. Almost had it but had to use the space to make a room for my dad. But ,still would like to make it happen! Great ideas!
Hi Evelyn, yes, make it happen one day - especially if your back yard will be your forever home (Still great for resale value). Dad's are important so understand the wait. We have a few other pergola videos in our play list and tomorrow - a Tuesday Tip on Louvered Pergolas - more great ideas for when you are ready. Thank you for commenting & liking us, you got this - your backyard pergola is right across the street . . .
I’m most impressed by the possibilities presented by the garden feature. It adds so much to a space, especially with the inclusion of edible landscaping and fragrant herbs.
Although I'm not always comfortable on barstools (I think they are built with tall people in mind), I do think the ideas of putting the bar on the back of the table height seating and the standing bar tables around columns were great space utilizing ideas. Love those pivoting stools on that railing bar too. Last example with the sunken area using a slope was so cozy looking and cool.
Really inspirational ideas. Thanks for providing some unattached cover ideas like at 2:20 in the cover section of this video. So many people want a small covered area but don't want to mess with permitting and the time it takes to get permits as well as the expense of them. It is also perfect for a small backyard like most homes have nowadays.
@Paradise Restored Landscaping & Exterior Design I can’t wait to share with you what I’ve done in my backyard. I’ll probably 90 days from completion but a lot of the tips and tricks you shared this video I’ve incorporated into my design. You guys got great stuff!
10 things to consider. For more details watch the video, for those like me who want a list to reference here you go. 1) Create a destination 2) Cover-shade etc 3) Privacy-fence or planting 4) Water Feature 5) Fire-I'm adding lighting 6) Bar 7) Garden spaces for greenery and color 8) Built-in seating 9) Focal feature landscape-a cool plant etc to draw you in. 10) Sunken Areas.
Every design shown here are fantastic, I guess depending of need, budget and space available the design takes place. Destination, in my opinion, makes it interesting and frequently used. If I have to choose one feature would be the use of screens for privacy and to add interest. Also, creates different areas and opportunity. Thanks!
Good thinking Chelin7023 - you are very astute! Budget, space, and design are so important. And Destinations are more so. We have one small backyard with a long bench across the back that we've separated into different destinations. Seems crazy but it works: www.paradiserestored.com/portfolio_item/small-space-landscaping/ We are also a fan of privacy screens as we all might like our neighbors but we like our privacy better! Thanks again for your positive insightful feedback!
I like them all and especially the design with the pergola that has the pull canvas screen. I have a small area but with lots of leaf dropping and wondered what I could do, that was inspirational but really so many inspirational ideas Thankyou so much from here in Australia
That was very helpful! I think the top three were covered space, privacy and fire feature. I love the idea of how can I do this on a budget with things I already have around the house...
Rebecca! THANK YOU! You get it! Yes, things can be done on a budget . . . many see our videos & reply it's not in their $ wheelhouse . . . and yet you understand - these are ideas to go with . . . We appreciate you!
I love all of this video but utilizing pillars and columns to add bistro style seating for bar space is brilliant. I never thought of looking at things as a destination but it really makes sense that way. Saving this video since it's just loaded with excellent information and ideas. I would do a fire feature over water to conserve water unless it's utilized into the ecosystem for wildlife.
I agree! I appreciate that some of the images were actual small yards, but most were not. I have a truly small yard and was looking for some ideas. If you get creative with sourcing materials (like Craigslist and your local Restore here in the US), some ideas won’t be crazy expensive. I do like his idea of getting a designer. You can get plans made up and then slowly do the work yourself over time if you are handy.
Hi All! Let's see - In many of our videos there are elements you could grab for smaller space yards. Take the property here: paradiserestored.com/portfolio_item/peterson-property/ - they put a dry creek bed in, then added a small bubbler feature as the water element, a trellis over some boulder steps near raised garden beds. They used their existing under-deck as a cover and added décor pieces. In this next property: paradiserestored.com/portfolio_item/modern-home-landscaping/ like Vonnie G stated, you could create a concrete firepit with a pergola cover and complete it in stages. Like more of a garden look? paradiserestored.com/portfolio_item/minimalist-garden/ - These features are doable in small spaces - the fireplace wall may not be in some peoples' price range but the other elements would work well. In this backyard we stuffed quite a bit in while creating small destination spots along the long bench. It's actually super cool and the view bar & stairs is a favorite. www.paradiserestored.com/portfolio_item/small-space-landscaping/ In the 10 secrets video - choose your favorite: #1) DESTINATIONS #2) Covered structure #3) Privacy #4) Water features #5) Fire Features #6 Adding a Bar #7 Garden Spaces 8) Built in seating #9) Focal Feature #10) Sunken Areas Then decide if you want them in your space. Put them on paper in a design format and decide the size and materials you want. If you need more ideas, they are all over in our portfolio. paradiserestored.com/portfolio/ Some scream expensive to you but each property has elements that can be a created in a smaller/more-cost-effective version. As to the Bells & Whistles: Décor items go on sale every June. You can grab many things for 40-75% off. We hope this helps - cozy nook backyards have elements individual to You. Thankyou for watching our channel and your honest viewpoints.
@@BackyardDesignGuy exactly. These designs don't need to be copied. Just take the ideas/elements that work for your space/budget and incorporate them into your plans. Be creative
I love the different things you can do to create water features in your design as well create beautiful privacy walls and features that looks more like art than a fence.
The average UK garden, you could fit a table and 4 chairs if your lucky. US small gardens are huge! He needs to give UK some ideas.. I think he would like the challenge!!
Hi Jay, I would love to design a space in UK... In fact so much to that I would greatly discount my design fee as long as I can show off the finished design and completed space to my UA-cam Community?? Let me know? If u are interested feel reach out here paradiserestored.com/contact-us/ please mention this correspondence. Thank u for watching ❤
Loved the sunken seating area. We have a sloped yard too and I have been wracking my brain trying to imagine that space as an area to entertain. It probably won’t happen this year, but the inspiration has begun! Love, love, love your ideas!!!! Thank you! ❤🙋🏻♀️🏘❤️
Thanks! I have 15 x 10 ft. front yard of a rental condo and have half of your features, not nearly as pretty, but just as welcoming for me as I come home! Just take one idea, focus on that one, bring it to completion, enjoy and save up for the next one. That is how I do it.
Sounds great! We think like that too! Way back when - I too started this way. Make a plan and start working your plan. We like your positive outlook Ellen! Thanks for sharing your viewpoint!
Great video with lots of creative ideas. I just renovated my backyard and I can happily report that I have many of these features checked off the list. But I am excited to figure out a focal point for a piece of art behind a bench which is against the horizontal pressure treated lumber fencing. I am looking for an art piece that includes a mosaic type design using colourful porcelain or old pottery pieces framed out into a rectangle that could be mounted to the wall above the bench. Thanks for all the other ideas as well. Loved the small bar area ideas.
I've been using your videos to do a preliminary design for my space that I can send to you, but would like to see some of your enclosure ideas in a few videos. I'm especially interested in curtains, open and close panels, etc. It would be great to be able to close a spa e for private y and to keep out the weather.
Great ideas! I personally don't favour built in seating around fire features because then you can't adjust how close / far you sit...temperatures wildly fluctuate where I live...not only from season to season but also from day to night :)
Good point Cindy! That's why I like some on one side and open-space on the other side. We have many firepit stools to scootch around like you suggest. You are the best for providing your genuine viewpoint!
Thanks Nikkie! We love positive feedback! I guess choose the ones you really love and will utilize the most over the years. Or do a couple now and invest in other a few years down the line . . . If this is your forever backyard, why not? Thanks for watching & commenting!
I liked the living wall, and a couple of the water features, also the jasmine in the frames, unusual and I am going to do it in the side of my house by the porch. Loved that idea. I can't actually have fire or water features unless very small, but love the sunken water feature at the end with the pink, purple lights. Very nice.
Hi Shannavegana! Cute name! - You are right about the little sunken firepit room - in the small backyard it is a focal-point and cozy nook. Thank you for your positive comment!
Minute 1:57...chef's kiss. I have a really small backyard compared to these but appreciated the variety and utility in even the smaller nooks and corners.
Hey Jennifer - those bars around a post are pretty cool! You are right! Many times the main counter bar stools are grabbed up first-come-first-serve so it's nice to have another spot to hang-out and chit-chat in a small space. Thank you for watching and sharing your viewpoint.
All of these ideas are great. I need to play around with these concepts on paper to bring it to the life of my backyard. Incorporating a deck with a fire pit and bar that has a covering would be my way to start the backyard of my dreams.
I love it Pauline. If u need design help... Let me know www.backyardlivingguyde.com/3d-design-process Or here is my Design Course www.backyardlivingguyde.com/
Idea for you: Landscaping for retired persons. Raised garden beds, no tripping hazards, entire backyard is one level, cement paths instead of stepping stones. Seating that is easy to get out of, chairs have arm rests to help push themselves out of a sitting position etc. low maintenance like drip irrigation, perennials.
Hi Kazrikt! here are a few properties you might get some ideas from: paradiserestored.com/portfolio_item/tropical-landscape-design/ www.paradiserestored.com/portfolio_item/inground-pool-backyard-design/ paradiserestored.com/portfolio_item/louvered-pergola/ Hope that helps! Have fun!
Hi Melissa, I understand that small spaces have different definition depending on where you live. I hope you found some inspiration though. Have a wonderful weekend 😊. I'll try to get something together for micro patios
But exactly--a backyard is not a micro patio, is it? These ARE small yards. Micro patios, balconies and terraces are unique in their design challenges, and I hope Paradise Restores considers a video dedicated to it, it's a great idea. For reference I'm a native New Yorker, so I'm used to videos calling 1/4 acre of land a "small space". 🤣
To reply to the comment form the channel the only place this is considered small is murica. I'm in Canada and we have yards with big space but a yard this big is pretty big in most of our cities. Now in the countryside like us our deck is the size of an apartment but most normal people don't live places where land is cheap
I love all of these ideas. Especially the comment on having the outdoors lure you from the inside view. I currently have a fire pit, 2 covered spaces (and a third in planning stage), multiple seating areas and garden bed. However, things are looking a bit tired, disjointed and I’m trying to stay with a rustic theme. I would like to incorporate a water feature and am looking to use some privacy screening ideas shown here to take the place of a large yucca tree that was recently removed.
Put in a patio pond for your water feature! They can range from simple and inexpensive to very expensive depending on your level of detail. Look up examples online! They’re wonderful additions
I agree - I'm getting ready to tear out my deck and redo my back yard - it is already going to be sunken and the other ideas are amazing to keep me focused especially since I will need it wheelchair accessible.
Love the idea of the fixed seating with storage great idea for a small space. What 3D tool do you use. What about augmented reality. As most of us have features or established views that we want to keep (or hide). South UK
Love this whole video. We have a small backyard we are wanting to transform. Our home is in Chico, CA. We can't find one company that does all this. Can you help?

Thanks for watching! Happy to hear quality over size. We get it, not everyone invests in an extra room of the house - outside. We appreciate your insight and the "excellent ideas" comment. We have some talented designers and must say, over the years you get a feel for what works best. Thx again for the thumbs up!
Thank you! Thank you! Some really great ideas. I made a list and will definitely use many of them for my deck design. Loved the idea of the built in seating and creating a destination. I think that you really showed how lighting in the backyard and make a very inviting space too. Thank you.
What a great video. We are just finishing out outdoor reno here in sydney. Something we've also added is inflatable furniture from the fillup club. Really comfortable and stylish.
Hey, rnupnorthbrrr SM! Sounds like your are Chilly! Hurry Spring! We really appreciate your nice comment. Someday for you on the bigger parts of the video, eh? We made a tropical oasis with a firepit , carpet, led candles and hanging lanterns in our tiny backyard. It looks awesome now. Thank you boo for your ideas
Appreciate the #1 Secret having a Destination. Decks are so much more than a place to put the BBQ! Love your ideas and see how a professional design is necessary.
Thanks for sharing!! We agree with you Ghosted! WE have many projects coming up with some art in the form of minimalist design fireplace and water features but no statues and sculptures - yet. We do assist with décor at times and we will remember your suggestion. Thank you!

Something to remember, Small space doesn’t mean cheap… I would have loved to see for each idea here on this video, the price tag per small space. I think that would help viewers kinda know what they’d be spending per small space.
This is NOT the Average American back yard!! But, the backyard of designers. Really great ideas which is what the whole video was promoting/selling. I especially liked

Yay! I’m so happy
Love the lean to style shed with the galvanized roof. A great way to get out of the weather without blocking your view.

I liked the concept of designing a plan for a destination -- another place to be at home. Very affirming of my own intuition.
Glad you liked it and feel the same as we do Julia!
Water and fire features are awesome as well as seating ideas were perfect suggestions. Can't wait to try them.

2) Cover-shade etc
3) Privacy-fence or planting
4) Water Feature

This is aweaome! Thanks for these clear details
Great ideas for my new home! Our homes are very close together and I want to create privacy on my lanai. The fireplace wall will work great!

@@BackyardDesignGuy hi ! I have an area of 10 by 10 sq meters …can you design it ? Please get back to me .
Small? Very expensive! How about a real challenge and try a small yard...and a small budget? Now that would be impressive.
EXACTLY!
Smeall very expensive how about a real change and try a small yard And a small budget now that
Would be impress
It's actually super cool and the view bar & stairs is a favorite. www.paradiserestored.com/portfolio_item/small-space-landscaping/
In the 10 secrets video - choose your favorite:
#1) DESTINATIONS #2) Covered structure #3) Privacy #4) Water features #5) Fire Features
#6 Adding a Bar #7 Garden Spaces 8) Built in seating #9) Focal Feature #10) Sunken Areas
Then decide if you want them in your space.
Thank u Markketta, I really appreciate your comment
The average UK garden, you could fit a table and 4 chairs if your lucky. US small gardens are huge!
He needs to give UK some ideas.. I think he would like the challenge!!
This is huge and I am in Canada
not all US gardens are huge, I live in a row home with a garden the size of a car (sedan, SUV or Van)
So true and I’m in London 👍🤣🤣🤣🤣
Go for it Jay if you can afford his discount, I want to see the finished project
Loved the sunken seating area. We have a sloped yard too and I have been wracking my brain trying to imagine that space as an area to entertain. It probably won’t happen this year, but the inspiration has begun! Love, love, love your ideas!!!! Thank you! ❤🙋🏻♀️🏘❤️
The seating, fire pits and focal point are all great ideas!
Thank you for your viewpoint Ms. Mariel Fernandez!
Great ideas!! I have a vision of my own home I hope to build someday, and you've inspired me w this great video for outdoor living...
I've been using your videos to do a preliminary design for my space that I can send to you, but would like to see some of your enclosure ideas in a few videos. I'm especially interested in curtains, open and close panels, etc.
It would be great to be able to close a spa e for private y and to keep out the weather.
Thanks for sharing your ideas for people who have small spaces to make a Beautiful Yard!🤗❤
No problem. Thank u for supporting our channel but watching and commenting
😇I’m really impressed with your comment, if you don’t mind friendship where are you from?
I love it all! Beautiful and inspiring outdoor spaces!
Thank u Diana.
👍I’m really impressed with your comment, if you don’t mind friendship where are you from?
Appreciated them ALL! Hard to choose.
Thanks Nikkie! We love positive feedback! I guess choose the ones you really love and will utilize the most over the years. Or do a couple now and invest in other a few years down the line . . . If this is your forever backyard, why not? Thanks for watching & commenting!
SO CREATIVE, COLOFUL AND SO EXCELLENTLY DESIGNED! SO TALENTED . . . HONESTLY! THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR DESIGN IDEAS!
Thank you Sandy. You just made my day 🤗
I liked the living wall, and a couple of the water features, also the jasmine in the frames, unusual and I am going to do it in the side of my house by the porch. Loved that idea. I can't actually have fire or water features unless very small, but love the sunken water feature at the end with the pink, purple lights. Very nice.
One of the most valuable videos I have seen. Perfectly delivered experience points here.
Wow! Thank you for this wonderful comment! I really appreciate your support and encouragement 🤗
Really love the last sunken living room w fireplace.
I love the bar around a post idea!
Hey Jennifer - those bars around a post are pretty cool! You are right! Many times the main counter bar stools are grabbed up first-come-first-serve so it's nice to have another spot to hang-out and chit-chat in a small space. Thank you for watching and sharing your viewpoint.
Thanks, the destination concept, is the missing link for many designs. Focal point to gather and enjoy outdoor spaces!
I loved them all, great vid. Did you mentioned lighting ? 😀
All of these ideas are great. I need to play around with these concepts on paper to bring it to the life of my backyard. Incorporating a deck with a fire pit and bar that has a covering would be my way to start the backyard of my dreams.

Yes, yes, yes. How much do you want to spend?
@@joneslo5572 How much $$$$ will it take?
Loved the water, fire, plants and seating features
Thank u Pamela. Happy u found some inspiration

Thank you. I saved 5 of your ideas to try to replicate in my back yard.
With all these lovely ideas, I’m surprised you did not cover lighting.
Good point. I will for sure cover that in the future. Thanks for commenting and watching. Have a great day
Or bugs with the plants
Pick one? They were all beautiful! Great job!
Thank u Irene...I really appreciate your support ❤

Water and Fire features are my favorite. Love them both.
Love the living walls.
Thank you Mariel...I appreciate u being a part of our community
Great design considerations. Incorporating a sunken area to deal with slopes was something I've never thought about before. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful Honest Mom! Many more videos filled with ideas! Thanks for commenting and liking our designs. Thank you!
None of these yards were really small. How about a video for micro patios, like for condo dwellers.
Hi Melissa, I understand that small spaces have different definition depending on where you live. I hope you found some inspiration though. Have a wonderful weekend 😊. I'll try to get something together for micro patios
or rowhomes
But exactly--a backyard is not a micro patio, is it? These ARE small yards. Micro patios, balconies and terraces are unique in their design challenges, and I hope Paradise Restores considers a video dedicated to it, it's a great idea. For reference I'm a native New Yorker, so I'm used to videos calling 1/4 acre of land a "small space". 🤣
In the PNW, these are small backyards.
Fantastic ideas. Thanks a lot. We love ❤️ the bars around the posts.
Thank you Linh...Yay! I appreciate you SO MUCH for Watching the video all the way through and Commenting. Have a wonderful day
Love the idea of the fixed seating with storage great idea for a small space. What 3D tool do you use. What about augmented reality. As most of us have features or established views that we want to keep (or hide). South UK
Love this whole video. We have a small backyard we are wanting to transform. Our home is in Chico, CA. We can't find one company that does all this. Can you help?

Great design ideas! I love PERGOLAS to cover a sunken area with built-in seating. Thanks!
Yay! I'm so happy you found some inspiration. Thank u too
👍I’m really impressed with your comment, if you don’t mind friendship where are you from?
Very informative I love the privacy concept.
We agree Perlita! We all love our neighbors but we love our privacy more! Thank you for watching and commenting.
It isn't the size but the quality of what you have shown. Excellent ideas. Thx
Thank you.
Glad it was helpful Darlene! We appreciate your positive feedback!
The gardens in a small area was my favorite. Keep up the good work.

The pergolas are awesome 🤩

I like garden, fireplace, hot tub/ dipping pool
Hi Roxanne - thank you for your favorites . . . we appreciate your feedback and for watching our channel!
Love the pergola w the slope. The table wrap around the pergola post.. I never thought of using hedges for privacy. And the planter/seating was cool
Thank you Gilbert
Appreciate the #1 Secret having a Destination. Decks are so much more than a place to put the BBQ! Love your ideas and see how a professional design is necessary.
Thanks so much Kimberly for letting all of us know your favorite feature. I also appreciate u watching and commenting. Enjoy the evening 😊
This is the best video I have seen on small garden design. I love all the ideas. Thank you!
Wow! What an amazing comment ❤. Thank u so much
Thank you for sharing! Please allow me to share one of mine that I think should be considered too:
11. Art pieces. Sculptures and Statues.
Thanks for sharing!! We agree with you Ghosted! WE have many projects coming up with some art in the form of minimalist design fireplace and water features but no statues and sculptures - yet. We do assist with décor at times and we will remember your suggestion. Thank you!

Something to remember,
Small space doesn’t mean cheap… I would have loved to see for each idea here on this video, the price tag per small space. I think that would help viewers kinda know what they’d be spending per small space.
