    Funny video, but I feel I have to correct a couple of points: 1. Viking age battle axes were NOT household tools used to chop wood in daily life. A woodcutting axe is far too heavy and pretty much useless as a battlefield weapon. All archaeological evidence shows battle axes as being very light and nimble weapons with extremely thin blades (thin as sword blades in fact) even the big two-handed "Danish" axes. Trying to cut wood with a battle axe would quickly destroy the axe I'm afraid.2. Gambesons do protect against blunt impact, but actually they protect pretty well against cuts and thrusts as well, especially when they contain a layer of felt.3. Maille didn't really require much of a skilled craftsman to make. In fact, it was often a job left to aprentices or unskilled labourers, while the master armourer worked on helmets and other more advanced stuff. The high price of maille comes from the fact, that it was extremely time consuming to make (drawing wire alone was an incredibly troublesome multistage process)4. That sword is a poor representation of a true Scandinavian sword of the period. In particular, the grip is at least an inch too long. The grip should really restrict your grip and basically lock your hand in place. Also: Swords of the period WERE in fact designed for thrusting. One of the defining characteristics that set "Viking" swords apart from earlier germanic/scandinavian swords is the fact, that the blade is more tapered with an acute point, clearly a cut-and-thrust sword. The sword has a floppy leather sheath, where a real sword of the time would have had a fur-lined wooden scabbard.5. Unlike the battle axe, the long seax actually was a household tool, used for all sorts of daily work, including use much as a modern day machete.6. You make it seem as though the round shape of the shield is something special. However, circular shields have been common throughout history, simply because they are easier to fight from behind. For a center grip shield it has the added benefit of even weight distribution, so the shield is easier to carry and maneuver. 7. The spear is ridiculously short and looks like a poorly balanced javelin. A proper war spear would be at least twice as long. 8. The rape joke... Yeah, I get it, but really it should be pointed out, that Vikings did NOT have a particularly bad reputation as rapists. Raiders and warriors of all times have committed rape, so vikings most likely did it often as well, but there's no reason to believe, that they were any worse than other Europeans at the time.

      Well said also I would like to add that helmet he was using looked like a later Norman helmet with that style of nose guard. Yes there where helmets like that back then however their nose guards uselessly where not that big maybe half that size. Also based off of the one Norse helmet found it had a face guard as well or helmets with cheek guards as well as a nose guards where used as well. Also you can use a ax indoors depending if it was a single hand ax or a great ax aka Dane ax. Same with the swords they could be used indoors in a real fight you wouldn't really want to make overreaching attacks with your sword for one it's a wast of energy and leaves you wide open there a videos on this. As well as the way he held out the shield which was straight out with the flat side facing the enemy that is impractical and limits your view. They most likely unless in a shield wall held it at a slight angle with the edge of the shield facing the enemy which also allowed you to switch sides easily with a flick of a wrist and protected your side and your sword could protect the other side. Or have your hand behind the shield edge with the sword facing out still allowing for slashing and thrusting attacks. Also while in a shield wall the spear would be over the shield in an over hand grip at a angle facing down or rested against the shield same for swords as well.

      There's also no evidence that the viking Norse wore gambesons. Naturally, there won't be physical eveidence as cloth degrades very easily, but even from the sagas, most evidence indicates the Danes wore their byrnies (maille shirts) directly over their kyrtles (tunics). Gambesons were a later technological advancement.

      All of you in this particular comment thread make me happy. It's refreshing to see this many people who know their archaeology in one area.
      I'd like to add for metal Mike, why did you choose boots that Danes never have in the Viking age, pants that didn't become popular until the time of the Rus and that hat that has no basis in archaeological finds. Even those wrapped leggings depicted in so many reenactments weren't popular. There is one saga where a Dane is made fun of for wearing them.
      Tighter designed pants, boots that were no higher than just above the ankle bones and hats without the Santa point. There are patterns on the net for all of these from historical sources. That's what you need to get your hands on. :)

    • @nielsbruls6061
      @nielsbruls6061 7 років тому +1

      Finkeren you are mostly correct, but your gambeson point isnt (no bad feelings :) because the early medieval warriors/ soldiers wore a sort of multiple layers of linnen jacket, that would have been used for protecting blunt force. It was cheaper to make, you could wear it under a piece of mail and it protect pretty well. If you take a later medieval gambeson with allit of layers what doesnt need chainmail or other armor on top, than yes, it will be used against gutting and thursting.
      But I have to say that Im very happy with this comment, you nicely axplain the historical facts compared to this video, well done sir ;)

  • @taylorwatson7932
    @taylorwatson7932 6 років тому +2

    1:35 Untrue. Scandinavian culture in the 8th century was agrarian, and therefore cash starved. Most Vikings (pirates, if you will) joined raiding parties with hopes of improving their financial status. Consequently, many went into battle with a shield and simple spear or axe. In the early days of the classical Viking period, It was only the extremely well-to-do who could afford armor and a sword. As time progressed and the northmen (as they were referred to) incredibly became involved in international trade did you see the rise of a small middle class in Scandinavia.

    7:13 And here you see why vikings bit their shields before battle. Soften up that piece of hide with spit and a bit of chewing and it'll swell, providing you a rest for the haft of your spear that is semi-tacky and hard for your spear shaft to slide down (or also to soften up the part of your shield you plan on trying to catch an enemies blade in if you're using a sword or axe on sword or axe). Or at least that's my take on it from using medieval weapons since the late 80's. But opinions are like arseholes, everybody's got one, take it for what it is, some rand-o on the internet.

    See, if I see a viking coming in that age, I am going to be meeting them on the shore with gold, silver and high quality bales of good wool cloth. I will do this every year just to keep them from destroying my settlements and people. In time this will lead to true trade, this is what happened, the vikings did raid for a long time but then kings, nobles and the like wised up and just paid them off to save their people.
    BTW
    Is that boiled leather under the armor? Very styling if I say so myself.

    There is a couple of things that youve got wrong, a viking chainmail was heavy, the viking hauberk reaches to the knee and weights in to aprox 12 - 18 kg.
    There is no historical referenses that the vikings used a gambeson, there are likely that they used a form of padded jacket but there are no evidence that they actually did.
    And the helmet question, you say the most common helmet of the period, nah there have been wery few helmets that has been found so to have a metal helmet was something only the wealthiest men could.
    If you look to the findings you dont se the "norman" helmet style in the same context as the vikings but rather the Gjermundu.
    The norman style helmet can be seen in the bayeux tapestry but that is a later time period as it represents the battle for Hastings in 1066.

      I doubt that people didn't make helmets with only a nasal guard on the face, before 1000 AD. It's literally a standard saxon/norse helmet without the sights.
      edit: Though I imagine that is could've been less common than the famous viking helmet

    • @TheThingInMySink
      @TheThingInMySink 8 років тому

      +asa holcombe No it's not, there has been many occasions in which mail was worn without a belt, yes it helps BUT it definetly isn't essential, watch scholagladiatorias video on mail if you want to know more.

    • @TheThingInMySink
      @TheThingInMySink 8 років тому

      asa holcombe Oh i should have addressed one more thing, most re enactors will say that belts were indeed essential. (I'd say that personally i would always use a belt) But then there's the thing about medieval soldiers, they were tough and strong (atleast the one's who could actually afford metal armor) So wearing a belt wouldn't make a huge difference. BUT once again if you can afford a shirt of mail i can't see why you wouldn't use a belt unless you have a coat of plates which basically does the same thing, it basically distributes the weight more easily. Byzantine soldiers are often depicted wearing multiple belt like contraptions over the mail that they used, but i'm not sure if it was simply for decorative purposes.
      41.media.tumblr.com/b344a149e1c8ac8302c9a7622bc46c85/tumblr_mzm9buiW1J1qfg4oyo1_1280.jpg

      +MyNameIsMud thank you for providing these sources. If you had not, I would not believe you for a second. simply because the only time I've worn mail is at Renaissance Fairs, and I did not like weight on my shoulders. I found the belt helps to keep the mail from moving around too much, but obviously I need to do more research.

    • @TheThingInMySink

      +Arian Wijkstra Nasal helmets were in use throughout northern Europe from at least the middle of the 9th century, roughly in the middle of the period usually defined as the "viking age". It was by no means an exclusive Norman piece of equipment, but by the 11th century it had become so popular as to be nearly universal in European military equipment. It's very posible for a raiding scandinavian pirate of the time to be wearing one.

    • @peejeevermeiren2314

      I've a question, isn't chainmail heavy? If I search in on other sources, it always says between 8-11kg or something like that. Most likely going to 10kg. Is that correct?

    • @Finkeren
      @Finkeren 8 років тому +1

      Peejee Vermeiren 8-10kg for a (short sleeved) hauberk is about right. Some maille was heavier, being made from larger gauge wire, but making the rings thicker quickly reduces flexibility, so most maille hauberks would fall around 10kgs, which is really not that heavy as far as armour goes (a thick gambeson could easily weight 4-5kg) If you've ever tried to handle maille, you'll know that it feels extremely heavy in your hands, but that's because of its flexibility - in some ways it behaves almost like a liquid - which makes it hard to get a good grip on. However, once you put it on, the weave pattern means, that it actually "hugs" your body (sorta like metal spandex), which helps distribute the weight across your body. Wearing a belt helps even further to take the load off your shoulders by shifting the weight onto the hips. I've worn a well made hauberk (I'm a tall guy, so it weighed a bit over 10 kg) on a couple of occasions, and it really didn't feel heavy at all. I've also worn a high middle ages "full" maille outfit, which weighed well over 20kg. That felt heavy, especially on the arms and legs when moving around, but it didn't restrict my movement any, it just got quite tiring after a while.

  • @Samael16661
    @Samael16661 8 років тому +5

    While the equipment is interesting to look at, almost nothing in this video reflects actual Danish/Norse history.
    VIkings did not rape, pillage or plunder more than any other Germanic people at their time. They tended to be farmers and traders before being pirates. They did settle in a few places and conquer territory though. But so did Charlemagne, and Anglo-Saxon kings are more often reported to raid their own churches for money than actual Viking raids.
    While it is archeologically proven that at least people of Jarl status would have mail armour and gambesons, very few written sources actually give us information on that. Icelandic Sagas almost never mention armour beyond shields and helmets. Those were the items that you could easily transport and easily equip.
    When it comes to battle tactics, we don't know that much either. What we DO know is that Vikings did not actually use shieldwalls (at least while conquering English territory), that was the tactic used by Anglo-Saxons. While there is talk of a "Great Heathen Army", Vikings were smaller in number on the battlefield, and either preferred to defend strongholds or use smaller parties to outmaneuver the giant shieldwall of the Anglo-Saxons.
    The point about the shields being held square in front of you is really the breaking point of the video. Everything stated before has been regurgitated by tons of historians, but since you actually hold the shield in your hands you have to realise that holding it square in front of you, flat side first, makes it vulnerable to be slapped aside so the enemy has an opening to kill you. Try holding it out with the edge first.

  • @RikkiTheRose
    @RikkiTheRose 9 років тому +4

    1.5 kilos is a very heavy sword. thet shield is alittle bit smaller than a normal one. those arms on the mail are a bit short in that time they were to the half of your forarm. and you forgot the most dangerous weapon of the feared norsemen. fists feet and body as the iron quality was so very very bad.

      Feffnirsbane there's quite a bit of wiggle room for shield sizes of the 8th - 11th centuries, his is just fine. Good to keep in mind that the amount of armour you wear os inversely proportional to the size of your shield.

    Well overall good video but I think I have 1 point of critic here... There has not been any evidence found that the hammer of Thor was worn around the neck or worn in any other way. Of course that doesn't mean it's not possible, but... Well you know... Maybe we should stick to proven stuff and stuff that is too obvious for them to use to deny.
    Also a point about rape because many people talk about it...
    You can't say they didn't rape. I dare to say that pretty much any military force on campaign in enemy territory did rape... I would even go so far and say even today it happens when armies of a country go to war against other countries. And of course outside of war it always happened and will sadly probably always happen... Humans are cruel.
    It just kind of bothers me that it's almost exclusively mentioned for viking raids... As if they went out to rape...
    It happened before the vikings, it happened after them, it happened during their period by other people... It wasn't treated as a crime in your homeland if you did it in enemy territory... That simply made it easy for them so many did it. Regardless of if they were scandinavians or other people raiding.

    The bullshit is strong with this video. I can point out at least 10 things you got wrong, but why bother. To understand how something works one should test it. What I mean is -no, they didnt hold the shield like that

      They did and have even painting them on their shields or other runes or symbols to gain that gods protection or favor in battle. There have been many finds of Mjonir's in Norse warrior graves like the one I wear which is a replica of the one found in Oland Sweden. In a viking grave.

    Would you Christians stop mixing Norse culture, weaponry and armor with English/Frankish please? That sword is typcial English, so is the helmet. Gambeson is hard to make out of materials avaible in the north during that time period.

    • @Finkeren
      @Finkeren 9 років тому +3

      +Daniel Gadea The sword is a pretty lousy reconstruction and neither looks particularly English nor Scandinavian. A spangenhelm construction nasal helmet is pretty much standard headgear for most of Europe from the 10th century, so that fits perfect. A gambeson can be made from a host of different materials, you don't have to use linen (even though flax was in fact grown in Scandinavia at the time), but can use wool, cotton, leater etc and it works just as well. Even though it's poorly documented in most cultures, gambesons or similar clothing has likely been used by virtually all armies for the last 3000 years. So yes: A gambeson is quite accurate for a viking as well.

    • @longkuaiji
      @longkuaiji 9 років тому

      He wants to portray a viking but u argue that it's okey to wear stuff from just same time period and not replicas of accual norse finds?

    • @Finkeren
      @Finkeren 9 років тому

      Daniel Gadea No, it must be at least plausible as gear a Scandinavian warrior at the time would've used.

    • @longkuaiji
      @longkuaiji 9 років тому

      Again... There are finds... Why use something else? That's like saying Chines wore samurai armor

    • @Finkeren
      @Finkeren 9 років тому +2

      +Daniel Gadea For the sword, I agree, but when it comes to the helmet there aren't so much "finds" as there is "one single find" which makes is ok in my book to look a bit outside Scandinavia for ideas about what headgear might have been worn.

      Der kleine O. vikings are no etnic group. A viking is defined as going on the viking, the quest for loot in foreign lands . So they were all warriors.

      Josef St indeed, but they origined from the baltic area what was shown on their clothing, the most who went far east joined the locals there and didn't go on viking but established trade routes.

    • @josefst2677

      Der kleine O. true but then they are danish or swedish settlers and traders not Vikings. but you are totaly right if we use the term Wiking as a general term for norse people of that period.
