What region and period are you portraying? I like the Russ trousers but am confused by the fact your shoes have laces and the extremely low neckline on the very short under tunics rather than knee length under kirtle. We have a lot of evidence for long narrow leather belts with decorative strap ends for men but absolutely no evidence for wide, modern style. belts. Could you provide sources for the wide, shorter belt and laced shoes?

Massive thanks Bjorn!! I’m a primary school teacher and we copied your hood pattern because as you said it is very simple. Now I have a whole band of boys roaming the school field at lunch time dressed in hoods pretending to be medieval archers! Thanks so much for the inspiration and sharing what you do with others!!! Keep it up!!
Skål! Thats wonderful! I loved playing fantasy when I was a kid with my friends and cousins. Pretending to be archers and mages, knights and nobility. Protecting the castle (school or closest house) from the "dark forces"
As of yesterday I have officially converted to Asatro, I would like to thank you Björn for being on of the "catalysts" for me returning to my roots. Thank you, you are a great man.
I love that you have to try and remember English words. It reminds me of the effort you put into these videos. I can only hope to gain the command of another language the way you do. You are exactly correct, Viking clothing are far more attractive than modern.
I found out several years ago about how I am related to a knight of Willam the Conqueror. The knight's name was Alvared and he originated my family name somewhere around the 1100s. So proud to be a viking!
As a cape, I have found that military surplus stores are GREAT! I bought a grey and an olive drab wool blankets and they are the best! Sooo worm! Just plain grey and a plain o.d. Green and they go great with my winter kits!, I even took the first one I ever got and put a clasp on the neck and used some tablet weave for some trim on the bottom and neck line. It came out great! So I have 3 wool caps but having some spare tablet weave left over from a beautiful grey wool tunic.
I know this is an old video and someone may have already said this but "brikkevev" is called "tablet weaving" or i guess it would be a tablet woven band in English. Fantastic video thank you for sharing with us your viking clothes.
It is great to see this... These TV series and movies nowadays give us the impression that all that Vikings wore were beaten-up leather clothes that were either gray or black, and nothing else...
One other thing is that wool is much more practical in real life situations. It stays warm even when wet. Leather gives you all kinds of problems out in the wild.
Best representation I've seen in regards to Viking clothing!! I love it when someone starts questioning the authenticity of historical reproductions. Especially when there are hardly any original designs to go by!! Great job!!! Cheers!!🍻
Wow you looked Viking! Standing on the rock fully dressed in the Viking clothes overlooking the water, just needed a Viking ship sailing in the back ground to complete the scene.
Thanks a lot, Rick. This place has a deep significance to me. And also, if you sail down that way, you come to Denmark. If you turn to starboard a few hours down there, you come to England.
It must be humbling in a way, to think your Viking ancestors undoubtedly stood in the exact same spot as you, gazing out to the ocean wondering or knowing what is beyond. Quite a time in history, no wonder you are proud of your heritage and lucky to be so physically close to the actual happening.
Bjorn Andreas Bull-Hansen we have had enough of the vikings in England thank you very much ;) On a more serious note awesome vids, loved the one on stoic thinking and the one on city’s making men more feminine.
Yes, i was watching him stand there, and i imagined a Viking knarr slowly rowing out from behind the point, bringing a look of shock and excitement to Bjorn's face.
Hi Bjørn, from viking sister to brother, the kind of making the socks is called naalbinding or nadelbinding. I am a beginner of this technique but it is great fun. The hat you are showing i know as skloldenham gugel. By the way it is q gratis pleasure to learn to know how the norse qre handling the own viking history. You folks are so much more at ease than we germans are with 'historical correctness'. It would be great to gather with vikings from all over the world to a hike in norway.
Bjorn, thank you so much for sharing! A couple of years ago, my daughter had a 'medieval' wedding, so I made myself a linen underdress and apron dress to wear for the event. It was so comfortable, that I have made myself some tunics for everyday wear since then. I am also thinking about making some linen and wool 'trousers' to go with my tunics. Seeing your post is inspiring and gives me more ideas for the garments!
It really is great kit, but its worth saying that most of it can be made using relatively simple hand-sewing techniques. There are plenty of tutorials and patterns available on the internet. The shoes are probably the trickiest to make, but even this is do-able. If you've not gotten kit together yet, then i strongly encourage you. There is great satisfaction to be had walking around clothed only in garments you've made yourself!
I'm into XVIIIth century dress, and it's so amazing to me how this Viking/dark age attire looks much more like today's clothing than Renaissance/baroque/rococo clothing
Really beautiful scenery at the end of your video. You are truly blessed to live in such beautiful surroundings with so much history. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Norsemen, from what I gathered, were very practical, people. If they would have needed a thicker leather belts, they would have. Thank you for sharing.
The wool socks and mittens are made by crochet. If you soak your timic in 1-2 cups of boraxo or oxy clean for laundry in a bucket filled with between 7-11 liters of water for 24-48 hours and then dry it on a clothesline in the sun, all the staining will be gone. Plus your tunic will look like new.
Thank you Bjorn. From America here.I have just started to learn nålbinding, and it was exciting to see those warm socks and mittens. I certainly want to wear those clothes.
I don’t know if you believe in the Old Norse religion, but I find it so fitting that some of óðinn’s ravens were listening and watching you share these pieces of clothing from Viking history. I have a strong feeling that óðinn and all the old gods are keeping a close watch over you as you keep the history of your ancestors alive and well. Skól to you Bjørn!
Just subscribed. Came to your channel from another channel, a teacher who had his students make your hooded cape. I will be going to my first REN festival in Texas, USA this fall (2024), and am looking at various kinds of garb to make. I am an 80 year old widow, with Swedish grandparents, and am very proud of my Viking ancestry.
I'm not sure if I've said this on any of your other videos, but I used to walk in the woods in similar clothing too. Although, I'm more partial to medieval clothing, fantasy gear or even a mix of both. I would walk the woods any chance I got, no matter the weather or time of day. If it was winter, I would bunch up with woolen stuff, a nice cloak and so on. If it got dark, I would carry a small wax torch in my pouch. I also always carried a sword, sometimes even a bow. It's not nessecary in any way, I know, but I feel like I need it. Doesn't feel "right" without a sword at my hip. I've walked the highlands of Härjedalen in medieval clothing, I've stood on the high fells and looked out across the Norwegian border, seeing miles and miles of untamed land. It's a sight to behold. Like I said, I used to walk the woods. Haven't been in the forest since 2015, and I miss it dearly. Extreme levels of anxiety is the culprit, and it's kept me indoors for years... It would be awesome to have a friend or hiking partner like you: someone who not only respects history, but lives it.
the tunic I have I didn't regret owning however I quickly realized it was not at all like the seller made it out to be, a new one is most definitely needed
I love your videos, and have followed your channel long enough to know that you are the real deal, but the way you stopped everything when you heard the raven, shows that you are truly a man of the old faith. I have many ravens where I live, and they not only follow on a hunt, but they lead me in the right direction so they can feast on the gut pile. I have several that I can feed by hand, and one that will perch on my shoulder .
It would be nice to compliment this video with woman wearing a dress.. and detailing her outfit. I was thinking of buying a woman viking outfit and seeing what it is like to wear. It is fun to explore older cultures. :) New sub here.
Thank you so much. I follow your channel already (it's a very good one). Yes, maybe I should try to find a female Viking reenactor with a speciality in clothes? That could be an interesting video.
The women's clothing is also very comfortable and warm and practical. And very pretty! I love historical clothing, and the women's dresses are actually warmer in winter than many of my modern clothes. I think it's because they're a little like a mitten compared to a glove -- in a skirt, my legs keep each other warmer, than when I'm wearing jeans. I wore my historical clothing a lot this last winter, because it was very cold where we live.
Ravens hovering above, a lost blue cape...hmm sounds like Odin has "an eye" on you Bjørn! :) Happy New Year by the way and all the best in the new 2018! Amazing outfit! Simple and yet so extremely efficient and comfortable as you pointed out. Thank you for showing every bit of it.
You know I like the fact that you are what you are,,,and you have what you have,,,your a good soul and I like that, thank you for sharing .thank you for your time and knowledge
I know this is an older video, but I hope you find this comment. Thank you for all your research and knowledge. I discovered recently that I am descended from Ragnar Löthbrok and have been trying to learn more of my Viking heritage! I am always excited to see your videos and hope you get your books published in English so I can enjoy more. Thank you and Skol!
I've spent a good part of this long snowy COVID winter here in Minnesota/USA cutting, clearing, burning nasty invasive buckthorn (thanks, Europe!) and I find myself longing for some authentic Viking clothing, because I am sure those crafty people had staying warm and dry all figured out. Looks so comfy, especially those boots. Enjoyed your vid. Thx.
I just found your channel, and have much to learn about the old ways..I wish I could live where you do but the swampland of Florida is my home...I like that you mentIoned the Raven...I love when they sometimes fly over and call out to one another...if your cape was stolen, I hope the thief suddenly has empathy and feels so much shame that he makes it his life mission to find you and return your cape.
Great video. I have just joined a Viking re-enactment society in England and am about to start making my kit. So this was useful. You have a new subscriber! I like your sensible and non-dogmatic approach. Makes perfect sense to me! Love the party trousers as well.
Every Viking should have a pair of party trousers! And good luck with your new hobby! It is very interesting to gradually get more and more historically accurate, if that is your focus... It doesn't have to be!
You have talented and generous friends Bjorn! ❤ It’s nice to have such a wonderful support system around you that you can reach out to. It sounds like you have a great community around you.
I was hoping you would do a clothing video. Found your channel through Grimfrost about a week ago and haven't stopped watching since then. Keep'em coming. Happy New Year
Bjorn, Thank you for posting your video. My wife has started to produce our families clothing for the viking festival this August in Norway. We are looking forward to our first visit with the entire family for 20 days and hope to experience as much of your rich culture as possible. Leinaia and Charlie San Diego
this is the first of your videos to cross my path and I absolutely loved it. I have been dressing Viking for special occasions for a few years now, definitely not as often as I would like to. I have less than 7.5 years until I retire from my profession and then I can dress Viking much more often! I make the majority of my own Viking attire. I have aprons, kirtles, shieldmaiden warrior attire. and i'm getting more and more accurate with my attire as time goes on. thank you so much for your videos! excuse me while I go binge watch as many as I can!!!
Great video I'm attending a party in October and this is my choice of outfit. I've really been looking into the warrior aspect of clothing with different styles of armour but it's amazed me how much viking armour changed over the centuries but I guess that stands to reason due to the different civilizations they visited and some conquered haha. Great video again Bjorn 🙏
I'm just starting doing more "accurate" clothes, but seeing you lay them out so I can get a good look at how they roughly should be put together, really helps me. Thanks
Your knowledge is very impressive. I have been interested in the Viking era since I was a child in grade school when I found out that Vikings were the first europeans in the "New World". I have no doubt that Columbus was a late comer and if Viking explorers had kept better records all would have known this. This is the first video of your's I have seen and I subscribed to your channel. Now I think I will actually try to make your Viking Bow and some arrows. Then a knife or a war axe and perhaps I will take the kiddies out on a weekend Viking. "G" Thank you for your time and effort you put into the channel. Off to watch more.
Thank you so much for sharing this amazing and informative video with us, I'm in the process of making my own viking/viking inspired cloths, so far I have a dress made. The raven is a very good sign and a blessing from the gods
Your videos and positive attitude brings me joy, and joy is a hard thing to find in America right now being a white male. So thank you for your videos and reminders that it's ok to be masculine and proud to be a man.
Thank you for the information, I’m really into Viking culture , and clothing , this has helped me out working out a Viking costume, love the video please make more . I’ve enjoyed watching and learning .
I feel you have made a very valuable point in this video, perhaps unintentional, but valuable. Much the same as modern people, people throughout history valued self identity. While cultural norms in clothing existed, every person would have had their own style. Perhaps one person valued a wide belt and another valued a narrow belt. Unless someone was there at that time, they just don't know for sure.
You talking about your nalebound clothing lead me to learn the art thank you !! hahaha ! My ancestors must have helped me figure it out after watching tutorials cause it was a bit confusing at first. Since September 2018 now have made- 3 pairs of mittens , 3 hats , a scarf , and now I'm working on a sweater. I have now spent about $150+ on yarn, needles and now a lucet ^_^ x-D thanks to you . Thank you for connecting me to my ancestors in a small way.
The viking style clothes are just so much more practical than the modern clothes, better for regulating the temperature and air flow. I guess the only real advantage of modern clothes are all the pockets. Thank you for this video, I have watched it a number of times, and you have inspired me to research and learn nalbinding for myself.
Great video Bjorn, Looks like Odin was watching as well. Considering the distances travelled by the vikings they probably did have clothes like the kaftan and "Party Trousers"(whick look similar to Cossack trousers from "Rus"sia). - Robb
Yes, absolutely. I think the common man's and woman's working clothes were completely adapted to the surroundings and they would wear what worked best.
Indeed...there is strong evidence of Viking travel and incursion down into the Eurasian zones of the Rus...so the ‘party pants’ and caftan are quite correct by logical inference...you may yet see that cape in parties to come!😁
Been involved in SCA and Dagorhir and have worn these items many many times. They are very good woods clothing. Comfortable and functional. I find myself missing these cloths when i am done with an event. Anyway good stuff!
Thank you for the introduction to Viking clothes! My great grandparents from both sides of my family tree are from Sweden (one from Norway). I really didn't realize that Viking re-enactments were a thing! I'd love to visit Norway so I'd love to attend one if I had the chance. Stay warm, friend!

Thank you for posting your video. My wife has started to produce our families clothing for the viking festival this August in Norway. We are looking forward to our first visit with the entire family for 20 days and hope to experience as much of your rich culture as possible.

this is the first of your videos to cross my path and I absolutely loved it.
I think that you would have fit right in. Great video!
You look fabulous!!! That looks warm and comfy too.
I Always Enjoy Your Common Sense And Clear Insight Into Most Things !!! Thank You !!!
watched this with Tyr playing softly in the background, it was pretty great
I have a tunic made a few years ago working on the rest but found that those clothes are made for comfort and warmth
Dear Bjorn, Thank you for your inspirational and informative video. Excellent! Open my eyes to Viking world. Cheers
super video, thankyou. I am just starting out with Viking re-enactment.
The great Vikings artefacts of clothing very nice and sure looks comfortable as well
I'm just starting doing more "accurate" clothes, but seeing you lay them out so I can get a good look at how they roughly should be put together, really helps me. Thanks
Glad to help, Gina!
Really nice to see you wandering like Odin.
I love your videos. I can tell you are a very mindful person. Thank you.
That hood is so simple yet such a great design. It just fits perfectly over someones shoulders and with such a basic shape.
Thank you so much for sharing this amazing and informative video with us, I'm in the process of making my own viking/viking inspired cloths, so far I have a dress made. The raven is a very good sign and a blessing from the gods
Awesome! I sent this to my son. He likes viking weapons and different things. He'll probably find it interesting.
Love this clothing. Perfect for Canada as well
Pauses for the raven. I do that all the time. Montana has a lot of ravens, I highly recommend Montana if you visit the US
Your videos and positive attitude brings me joy, and joy is a hard thing to find in America right now being a white male.
NIce video, i like viking clothing thats why i wear my viking clothes every day for the last two years :)
Thank you, Bjorn, for not changing in front of the camera.:) Great video mate. Yes, I'm from Australia.
Haha, this is not that kind of channel... Thanks a lot, and by the way, I have relatives in Australia.
Thank you for showing the different pieces and explaining them!
I'm very interested in the clothes you showcased! Thank you so much for sharing :)
Great video ! Thanks again for your hard work and actually sharing your knowledge. Your my favorite channel.
The viking style clothes are just so much more practical than the modern clothes, better for regulating the temperature and air flow. I guess the only real advantage of modern clothes are all the pockets. Thank you for this video, I have watched it a number of times, and you have inspired me to research and learn nalbinding for myself.
Possibly a follow up video on how to get dressed, garment by garment, in your wiking clothes? Just a thought. Thanks for ALL YOU DO! Skal!
I enjoy our little talks! Id love to see the scand countries
Indeed...there is strong evidence of Viking travel and incursion down into the Eurasian zones of the Rus...so the ‘party pants’ and caftan are quite correct by logical inference...you may yet see that cape in parties to come!😁
You are doing a great job, much love brother. Thank you for all your hard work.
I am learning a lot on how to live simple . Thanks from The U.S.A
That was so interesting Bjorn. Thankyou. I hope you find your cape
A friend from Iceland taught me about nail binting. It's knitting but with only one needle-ish tool.
Another great video Bjorn.
That sounds like a plan!
Wow! You look great in the Viking clothes.
Quite dashing,Viking style!Awesome!
Norway is so beautiful, Denmark is just one big field. Great vid
I'm a new subscriber and I'm loving your videos
Been involved in SCA and Dagorhir and have worn these items many many times. They are very good woods clothing. Comfortable and functional. I find myself missing these cloths when i am done with an event. Anyway good stuff!
Bjorn if I ran across you in the Viking garment I would turn the other way and run LOL!! Another great video man thank you.
Love it. Great looking clothes. I want a wardrobe like that :-) Slowly I'm getting there. Thanks for sharing ATB / Marcus
Thanks for the comment, Marcus. It takes a bit of time to get all the clothes, but it's worth it in the end!
