The existence of the Forgotten Vale makes me think (hope?) there may be other hidden pockets where Snow Elf survivors may have hidden, undisturbed. Maybe one day they will appear again.

Since we only find 1 snow elf male even if there are other holdouts it would be almost impossible for the snow elves as a species to bounce back from. They would need to relocate to the Forgotten Vale(FV for short) unnoticed, destroy anyway into the FV (but one), stay hidden and repopulate until these a few hundred of them when they couch decide weither to open relations with the outside world. And thats IF anymore snow elves survived.

My head canon is that there must be some who escaped the fate of the falmer. For example, I'm playing as a snow elf in skyrim now, with the backstory of his family sensing great magical power in him and hiding him away from the dwemer. Obviously that's not canon but I feel it's definitely possible something similar could've happened

Gelebor actually states that there were 100 of his pupils with him and it was only fairly recent that the betrayed stumbled upon the forgotten vale and killed all 100 of his pupils leaving only him and vurther so it's not impossible for other large groups of snow elves to go in noticed on other parts of tamriel

Tarlo The Boar i don’t know if “peaceful” is the right word. They were civilized and relatively good, but they weren’t innocent, they attacked the Atmorans for no real reason other than greed (wanting to steal the eye of Magnus from the Atmorans). I’m not saying they “deserved” it, but it was something they brought on themselves by making war with the Atmorans.

No one ever seems to talk about the ending to The Diary of Faire Agarwen.
"We know that we can never again be the Snow Elves and live freely in this world. We will forever be in hiding in one form or another. But there is no reason we cannot live life with the sun and the wind against our skin. There are those here who are friends to us and plan to help us once the threat has ended. We know now to survive we must be born anew. Outside, we will appear as though we belong here. Inside, we will carry our truth and our scars."
Those last three sentences have some really interesting implications and I've yet to hear anyone mention them.

I have often wondered about those lines, too. Just out of curiosity: what do you think it means? False hope because the whole Dwemer race disappeared before the kindly few could offer help in secret? Some sentient, seeing Falmer among the twisted ones? Or something else entirely, like an escape in the form of High Elves or even Nords? Some kind of change magic to live out in the open, hiding in plain sight. Or none of the above?

This is only a theory, but seeing as this excerpt is seemingly from a female falmer perhaps this could be the origin of the whisper mothers. There is an interesting reddit thread on this matter that speaks of how the whisp mothers faces have striking similarities to the snow elves, and that they are likely snow elven in origin. Maybe it's a bit of a stretch but purhaps the Pale lady is this Faire Agarwen, "reborn" and the first to make the transformation. Either way those sentences from this diary is extremely interesting and worth being explored further.

I never felt much animosity towards the Falmer. While they are vicious and aggressive creatures, and I dispatch them without question, I can at least understand where their behavior comes from, after their systematic abuse and torture by the Dwemer over generations.
But the chaurus... the chaurus I absolutely DESPISE. I hate every single one of them with every fiber of my being. They’re dark, evil, scary, scheming, skittering giant ice-centipedes with ant-like social structure. But oh no, they’re not just mindless insects...no definitely not. I swear I detect some kind of cold, calculating intelligence behind their nasty, black alien-like eyes. It’s almost as if they enjoy murdering men and mer alike, rather than killing us for sustenance. I feel a sense of pride every time I clear a Falmer den; the Falmer are dangerous and a big risk to adventurers and travelers and killing them keeps their surface presence to a minimum. But annihilating those nasty chaurus is the work of the Nine.
I’d rid Tamriel of every last one of them in a giant crusade, like St. Jiub and the cliff racer scourge, if I could.

The Snow Elves were said to have been very advanced, and were far ahead of what was expected at the time, and they had no interest in spreading out from Skyrim to the other provinces, since they're well attuned and adapted to the North as it is.

Given the existence of the Chantry of Auriel being untouched by the Atmorans, it could be possible that the Snow Elves can still exist beyond just the Falmer in the caves. While it is unlikely, given their ability to use wayshrines, they could have created a type of sanctuary based around one of their temples and hid, when Ysgramor and the Companions and the Snow elves were losing, a few hundred of them could have fled through a wayshrine or several to a place where their culture could rebuild again, slowly over the next 4,000 years hidden high in the mountains protected by their gods and the use of their frost magics. Its an interesting scenario that could play out and give a good lore reason for why they could return in their original state.

Unlikely though possible that survivors who lived in the Vale and Chantry weren't all wiped and some made it to the Western reach of High Rock through the Vale, by some now lost route. Or like Gelebor said, other pockets who went elsewhere when they went to the Dwemer.
That said I strongly believe if any are still out there by now, they like Gelebor are solitary, or at best few in numbers and tragically isolated away from the world. Unable to really return to the world or find each other. Not to say if they even did, they would be a living relic unable to find peace in society, if not outright hunted.

Exactly, can't believe much of the Fanbase says that the Snow Elves "deserved it".
Ysgramor and the 500 Atmoran Companions didn't have to commit an Extinction level event upon them all for one city.
Really, why did Snow Elves across the whole province have to pay for the actions of a few for the Night of Tears?
The Snow Prince, ruler of the Falmer, put on an impressive last stand, to the point where they buried him with full honors as a warrior, despite being enemies. After he died, Ysgramor should've ended the war to respect the fallen Warrior Prince.

      Funny thing is, I was watching a video on the Eye of Magnus, and it states not only was Saarthal not the only city (just the main one/capital) but that the Snow Elves never intended on wiping out or pushing the Nords from Skyrim;
      ua-cam.com/video/wJGUWbDip_A/v-deo.html
They didn't just go in and slaughter everyone (although as tensions rose in the city at night, unfortunately the situation must've gotten out of hand) they had a map of the city and went directly to a part of the city (night means less resistance or issue moving in the city) and supposedly were indeed there for the Eye of Magnus.
Questions is, why's they leave it in Saarthal for as long as they did? My guess is that they knew something was wrong and as Elves, they felt the magical presence of the Eye, and came to investigate, maybe not knowing what exactly they were looking for, that's my best guess.
They wouldn't have attacked for no reason, and if the Nords were messing with the Eye or were being careless with it, the Snow Elves, as natives of the land, would have a right to see and assess the Artifact.
Either way, the Snow Elves only went to Saarthal, and the situation went from surgical operation to a fight, in which (somehow) Ysgramor and his sons were the only survivors..
Weird, how is it the leader and his sons of a warrior race were the only survivors, even though you'd think he would've remained and fought "like a true Nord" not abandon his people. The situation may be exaggerated by the Historians, maybe not a full blown slaughter, or if it was, Ysgramor certainly wasn't the only one who lived and escaped from the city, maybe others went to the other cities and sought to hide with them, since the Snow Elves had no interest in wiping all of them out in the first place, but Ysgramor would've been angry enough to go to Atmora alone and make bold claims of "Elves being jerks", and used that as an excuse to kill them off into hiding.
Either way, I won't condone innocent people dying, but the Snow Elves certainly had their reasons with something like the Eye of Magnus involved, and given the Staff of Magnus was found in another capital city of Nords, well... seems they were hiding it and perhaps tampering with something they didn't understand, and the Falmer fearing this would cause calamity to Skyrim itself is reason enough to demand the Eye be given to them, a race far more advanced and able to safeguard the Eye and have it under safe keeping.

Very cool video guys, loved the intro poem :) *Humble suggestion that might help spruce up the visual content in the videos* - you could play with lower FOV values when recording these panning shots to variate the focal distance, which helps create more dramatic cinematic scenes and an enhanced sense of scale for NPCs and objects. For example, Skyrim's default FOV of 65, is the equivalent of a 28mm camera lens which is quite wide and helps capture large areas, and landscapes, but the disadvantage is that NPCs and objects appear tiny. On combat scenes, you could experiment with FOV 39.6 which provides the focal length of the 50mm camera lens, or FOV 23.9 which is the equivalent to an 85mm lens - ideal for panning portrait shots of NPCs and such. Of course you would have to increase the distance you capture the subject from, and really decrease sucsm to 0.1 or something, to pan smoothly at these FOV values. There's even depth of field mods such as "Marty McFly's Advanced DOF
" that you can try, for slightly out of focus backgrounds.

@@Twilight24682 could have been any number of reasons, despite the peace Ysgramor and those from Atmora were likely members of the Dragon Cult and were claiming more and more land as their own this could have led to skirmishes between the two sides that we never saw. After all, the Dragon Cult is known for its brutality so it makes sense for those who believe in it to still act as their religion would dictate, even in a new land. Also we only have the word of the Nords and the Night of Tears to confirm that it was just a farming village but I do not think so; this is a people who are known for their embellishments when it comes to accomplishments and demonizing their foes further than they should be.
Not only that but after reading through the night of Tears and information surrounding the Nord-Falmer War, it seems that most of the Falmer were unprepared for the return of the Nords. Perhaps it was a small force that made their way into the city as the Imperial Report suggested and made their way into the center because they detected the eye of Magnus. With such a powerful tool in the hands of new and likely aggressive arrivals it makes sense for the strike to secure it but the situation got out of hand resulting in them destroying Saarthal. It could have been a group that was just tired of the Atmorans constantly taking land that wasn't rightfully theirs or a noble who believed that such a power was a threat to the snow elves. After all, if you were the leader of a nation and suddenly detected that a rival nation has access to high grade uranium necessary for the construction of nuclear warheads, a surgical strike would be warranted. The entire situation could have been a mistake blown out of proportion and would have been settled in a talk, someone needed to pay but not the entire Snow Elf civilization and population.

According to the Gelebor, the Atmorans and Snow Elves were always at war because the Atmorans claimed Skyrim was their ancestral home and wanted to conquer it.
This is further supported by the Night of Tears suggesting that Snow Elves and Dwemer shared the Eye of Magnus and were thus able to advance far beyond what would be expected from their time period. However, the Atmorans built their city of Saarthal over the Eye's resting place and tried to keep it away from the Snow Elves, who retaliated and attacked Saarthal.
In addition, the Atmorans were ruled by the Dragons and the Dragon Priests. I doubt the Dragon Cult ever had an interest of peace with the Snow Elves or anyone else. And even if they were, it would make sense for the Snow Elves to let some other race "peacefully" steal their land and start setting up civilization.

It is a nifty trick, I can even dodge the invisible arrows. Now some may not believe it and that is fine but in truth it is my experience time and time again with the falmer. It is amazing how much depth the game actually has, apply basic principles of relying on other senses and you can indeed sense the Falmer. Additionally, mans first historian was Ysgramor himself, that fact alone discredits the Night of Tears for me. The Snow Elves were the most peaceful race not just of Elf, but of all races. There is no record of a war before the Nords came, and even when they came the Elves let them stay.
The races of man have a history of genocide of Elves. The Yokudans and Redguards eradicated the Left Handed Elves for seemingly no reason. The Nords did the same to the Snow Elves. It's hardly even a theory, everything we know leads us to believe the Night of Tears is pure propaganda

Snow Elves allowed it and wanted peace cause they figured not to be petty, but like children, Man kept taking more and more for granted, and eventually, once hostility grew with increasing demands and the Atmorans claiming Skyrim was actually there's, well.... turns out it was the humans greedy in this situation, Snow Elves had a right to fear a group of humans that worshipped dragons in cults, just saying.

@@thalmoragent9344 I would really like to have a discussion with you about the Snow Elves and Atmorans because you seem like a reasonable person.
I have to say, though, that your perspective is very biased towards the Snow Elves because it does not take into account the Atmoran theology that states the Nords were created by the breath of Kyne upon the Throat of the World. The Atmorans then migrated to Atmora for unknown reasons and now began to return to Skyrim, the land of their birth as a people. That is why the annihilation of the Snow Elves and settling of Skyrim by the Atmorans is called "The Return".
You say that the Snow Elves were the ones rising above pettiness and that the Atmorans just began taking too much - like children - yet I could just as easily say that the Atmorans were being uncharacteristically tolerant to their ancient enemy, the Snow Elves by peacefully coexisted with the Elves in what should be Atmorans' sovereign land.
As for fearing a dragon-worshipping people, I'd have to disagree. The tablets along the 7000 Steps vaguely outlined that dragons use to rule the world peacefully and wisely, only Speaking for "true need". I believe it most likely that dragons only began to turn towards domination when Alduin did so as well. As the World-Eater turned towards dominating, so did the dragons and perhaps so did the Atmorans become cruel in war.
The Atmorans needed land to settle, fleeing war and a changing climate, so I can understand why they were so desperate in seizing land. Atmorans were concerned for their whole species. But still, that doesn't justify the Snow Elves outright attacking Saarthal and wiping out all but three of it's population.
Yes, I can see a lot of faults in humans in both real life and in the Elder Scrolls but this idea of Elves being this better species is sorely unjustified. We don't know what provoked the Snow Elves and there seem to be varying accounts of the relations between Snow Elves and Atmorans from "they were friendly" to "they just tolerated each other and nothing more".

      @@adarshkamoda9183
Ah, thanks for the conversation! I'm totally open to a discussion with a fellow fan such as yourself.
Although, even if Skyrim was where Nords were born to fight the Elves back when the Ehlnofey were fighting under Trinimac and Lorkahn, that means Elves have been in Skyrim just as long as the ancient Nords were. If anything, the fact the Nords got separated from Skyrim and stuck on Atmora after old Aldmeris was sundered by the Ehlnofey Wars, means the Snow Elves have a higher claim to Skyrim. Their Aldmer Ancestors were there just as long as the Nords, (and in all honesty, even longer) and unlike the Nords, they remained in Skyrim, which would've changed a bit over time as well, and the Aldmer would, as they always do, adapt to their new environment, and became white skinned and eventually called Snow Elves, and maybe other Aldmer took to the underground in and around Skyrim and mainly Morrowind, and evolved into Dwemer.
Anyways, I've defended the Snow Elves time and time again, because much of the community seems to think Ysgramor tantrum was totally justified and that all of the Snow Elves across the entire Province were somehow guilty and deserving.
And I mean, just as what was said in the video and other sources, we still don't know what exactly transpired before the Night of Tears in Saarthal, so who knows what the Eye of Magnus had to do with it. They never took it with them, or did anything with it from what we know
Maybe they feared the warlike Atmorams using it for war purposes, or who knows. Atmorans coming in droves and acclaimed Skyrim as their homeland, so I mean... they were worried what would become of them if these Atmorans came and decided they didn't want to be friendly, and used the Eye of Magnus to help them.
The Snow Elves fearing this is understandable. Doesn't justify killing all the innocents in Saarthal, no of course not, but Ysgramor and his 500 Companions probably killed them all because they likely didn't want to "share" their homeland with its other native inhabitants. He probably used Saarthal and blew it out of proportion to the Atmorans back at Atmora to "justify" killing all Snow Elves, probably claiming BS like "Oh, they can't be trusted, Saarthal was the last straw" or "we did nothing wrong, theh just declared war on all the Nedes in Skyrim and killed everyone for no reason", etc.
And we know little to nothing about the whole story except from, of course, a humans point of view, something to take into consideration 👀
      Long story/rant incoming, sorry but I'm VERY passionate on this subject;
Undoubtedly, the Snow Elves knew the Atmorans were hiding something, and they were right to fear it. If they came with claims that Skyrim was actually their "homeland" then the Snow Elves would take this as a huge potential threat.
I try to think of things from a Snow Elf point of view; Atmorans come claiming Skyrim as their true homeland and land on top of an Aedric power, and the Snow Elves, the most peaceful elves we know of, next to the Bosmer, are fearful of this and try and kick them all from Saarthal, which then leads to a Genocide that spans multiple generations with all of their people and cities destroyed with no traces left.
Now, why wouldn't the Snow Elves have asked for the Eye, saying it was an important item for their God? I feel there's a lot the Nords didn't write down, to victimize themselves more for future writers. No attempts of diplomacy, at all, from a race of evidently very peaceful elves in comparison to the all the ones we know of?
Just saying, something doesn't add up. This doesn't justify killing all the innocents in Saarthal, no, but seriously, the entire race to be killed for the destruction of ONE city? That's BS, and I say Ysgramor should've ended the war to respect the fallen Snow Prince, the Snow Elf that the nords so clearly thought was a great Warrior to the point they gave him a proper, honorable burial.

      @adarshkamoda9183 3 роки тому

@@thalmoragent9344 I agree with you in terms of the Old Elnohfey and Wandering Elnohfey perspective. The Old Elnohfey remained on the original Tamriel the longest so have the truest claim to their land. The Wandering Elnohfey thought they would be welcomed back as long-lost kin but they weren't. The book that told this tale mentioned explicitly that the reasons for the war breaking out was unknown, though it would have been reasonable to assume the Wandering Elnohfey wanted a piece of Tamrielic land and so attacked the Old Elnohfey.
You're absolutely justified in taking the Snow Elves' point of view on this. Wiping out an entire race is almost impossible to justify in any fantasy situation. You'd need a race of monsters that do nothing but kill, kill and kill other species with no reason except malice. This does not hold true for the Snow Elves, yet I think it is reasonable to assume that Ysgramor must have had a good reason because he won in the end - wiping out Snow Elven civilization into the most tattered books.
As for why the Snow Elves didn't take Eye of Magnus, perhaps they were still holding out in the ruins of Saarthal and Ysgramor drove them out of Saarthal as the first objective? Maybe the Snow Elves were trying to figure out how to move the Eye without incurring major damage? If the Snow Elves really did want to safeguard the Eye, why didn't they take it? It just makes the most sense. Perhaps the Elves thought that dealing such a heavy blow against the Atmorans meant that the humans would be too afraid to attack the clearly technologically superior Elves or that the humans had no way of mounting any real resistance. After all, the Elves knew where, when and how to attack Saarthal and sacked the city in a way only people who knew the layout of the city could. This may have been due to the magic of the Snow Elves.
Why the Snow Elves would fear humans such as the Atmorans and still allow them to have residence in their land makes little sense to me. We know that both races have had interactions on the scale of religious war in the most primordial sense. One could argue that perhaps the Snow Elves were trying to avoid a second Dawn Era war but due to religious and political internal strife, they moved against the Atmorans who are clearly warlike and may claim Skyrim for themselves. Better "to nip the problem in the bud", right?
You keep describing the Snow Elves as peaceful but I don't think that's the case. They never seemed to have many interactions with their neighbours, who consisted mainly of the Dwemer and later the Chimer and perhaps the Khajiit and Argonians (as the latter two races are known to be natives of Tamriel). Yet, we also know that the first interactions between Khajiit, Argonians and Altmer were in war and conflict. Khajiit reputedly populated all of Tamriel and Argonians once had an advanced civilization of their own. My point being we don't know of many interactions the Snow Elves had but they were undoubtedly sophisticated as heck. So, it begs a similar question to yours as to why the Snow Elves chose to war with the Atmorans? Perhaps they thought that the war would be easily won and that negotiating with these 'savages who didn't even have a written language' wouldn't bear any fruit? Like you described Men as children taking land greedily, I don't think the Snow Elves were that nice. The Dwemer lacked all compassion, the Ayleids enslaved humans brutally and the Chimer take death and deceit as their religion. Perhaps the Snow Elves thought they had been too generous by allowing the Atmorans to live in Skyrim and the more aggressive leaders of Snow Elven society thought they could win if they struck first. The Snow Elves remained in Tamriel for longer so it may be they have clearer records of the Dawn Era and some of them may have been pushing to wipe out the Atmorans.
Imagine what Tamriel could have been if the Snow Elves remained in Skyrim...

The Snow Elves certainly were far more peaceful than the other races of Mer at the time. I mean, they let humans come in and eventually spread from Skyrim to the rest of Tamriel with no issue.
They let some stay and build in Skyrim and, unlike the other races of Mer, they didn't enslave or torture Humans. They lived in their Isolated Province with no mention of war outside Skyrim. They were content with what they had and we have no reason or evidence to believe that they had any conflicts with their neighboring Provinces.
They liked it there, were best adapted to the Tundra of Skyrim, and given the Dwemer were an immoral race as it was, it says a lot that they had respected each other's presence in Skyrim for as long as they did, opting to stay out of each other's way and go about their business.
A race of Mer that figured to just let bygones be bygones and let humans live in peace for who knows how long in the same province? I buy it. The Atmorans coming and claiming more and more land as theirs can only last for so long before the Snow Elves would of course get uncomfortable with how the humans would be so bold.
I mean, yeah, the Snow Elves were definitely generous given the dangerous nature we knew of the Atmorans of the time, dragon cults with no written language that come en masse... I mean, what other race do you know of that would be willing to take in foreigners with little to no issues until they came over and settled a city over an Aedric Artifact? One so important to the Snow Elves, given their sun aesthetic, you'd think the Snow Elves would simply ask for it as tribute for letting the humans stay in peace, and given the attitude of Nords today... not too far fetched to consider that maybe the Atmorans were being difficult and passive-aggressive about it.
Yeah the races of Mer have had their own problems, but notice with the Chimer, they had followed Dunmer, and so did some Aylieds (don't forget many Aylieds also joined Allesia and her rebellion, likely ones that worshipped Aedra instead), and Dwemer are a very interesting situation even for Mer and Man or Beast alike.
Just saying, Snow Elves couldn't have been all that bad given they had the least high and mighty attitude of their other Elven cousins when it came to humans. They let the Atmorans have as much as they did, and eventually they demanded and took too much, with the Eye of Magnus not being given over as the last straw.
Even then, we don't know if this was a unanimous decision across Snow Elven leaders, or just one guy thinking "yep, they have the Eye of Magnus and we're already having problems with them as it is, can't let this get out of hand with an Aedric Artifact hanging in the balance", and given what we know, Atmorans probably had no idea what it really even was, so I mean... they could've been tampering with it for all we know, and the Snow Elves figured they had gone too far and were being difficult and were now too dangerous.
It's also worth a mention that Saarthal was the only human settlement destroyed. Later, a Snow Elf makes a journal and says his family is hiding with a family host, which they don't name so that they won't be scrutinized if they ever got found out about. So clearly, Saarthal was being a pest and some Snow Elves figured they could only handle so much ignorance and greed from the Humans before they had to put their foot down.
Ysgramor probably left the Eye buried since he knew the Eye meant a lot to the Elves and he figured that it was dangerous and they obviously weren't sophisticated enough to be able to even comprehend its true nature. My take on it is that Ysgramor figured that since tensions were rising and Atmora was becoming less hospitable, he'd kill all the Snow Elves by blowing the situation out of proportion to the Atmorans back home and used it as an excuse to annihilate everything in Skyrim to make way for waves of Atmorans to migrate and settle in their "homeland" without needing to share, which again, shows a greedy and childish action from the Humans.
Skyrim today is a run down, backwater Province with brutish Nords running about with, in some ways, less sophisticated civilization than even their Atmoran ancestors that had some rather impressive builds that we see in their Ruins. Had Snow Elves remained, Skyrim may very well be better off sophistication wise as of modern times.
