  • Just ahead of producing a new special for PBS releasing at the beginning of 2021 called Surviving Disasters with Les Stroud, I was working on setting myself up properly with various home supplies that I could film. Then the coronavirus hit and I see everyone panicking needlessly. So here you go - I put this together quickly to get some common sense information out there to empower us all in what to do next. Next videos will include: water, equipment, electric and gas power, sanitation etc. Stay tuned to my UA-cam channel / lesstroud for my brand new Podcast launching summer 2020: Surviving Life with Les Stroud. And let me know if you would like to to produce more videos like this one?

    People forget preparedness was a way of life just 50 years ago. With that preparedness comes skills almost every other person today has forgotten like canning food, growing food etc. People are so comfortable just being able to run to the store. Depending on Walmart isn't preparedness..having the appropriate skills which allows you to live with out Walmart..that is true preparedness.

Just follow some homesteading channels and you can quickly learn about anything, it's key to be able to adapt vs act like "most" millennials whom don't dare leave the tech for a more sustainable way of life. Les Stroud you need not to open your mouth when you don't know what you're talkin about. I am a professional firefighter and medic and my wife is a registered nurse and we are both preppers. I belong to one of the largest prepping groups in North Carolina. We meet for 3 days and training on food preparation emergency medicine alternative power sources and how you really survive during an emergency. Or pandemic. We do not have addresses to Mormon faith nor anyone else to come and take their food. In fact we are instructed to always put back extra food and medication to help those that are less fortunate and ill prepared. And if there is going to be a TV show about what to do an emergency preparedness in the event of a disaster shouldn't it be hosted by emergency personnel that are properly trained an educated in this field. Instead of a celebrity bushcrafter.

    Its funny how it gotten named prepping, I never thought about it as prepping. My grandparents taught me to can the extras of Summer gardens for the lean Winters months. Everyone did it and it was just the normal thing to do was to have extra stuff around for when something happens and it always does. Its called life and it never goes without bumps. I do not have a bunker full of stuff but I can easily go without shopping for a very long time.

    @helena8999 4 роки тому +5

    after 4 months of quarantine(there's a sentence I never thought I'd say) I'm surprised to see how my monthly shopping list has evolved and been tweaked. The first 3 weeks kinda sucked cause I didn't realize what I'd be craving as food started running out. I would look up pictures of chocolate and fresh fruit and just fricking salivate. So as quarantine went on, I started realizing that I should buy frozen fruit for when fresh fruit went bad, canned milk when the milk went sour or soybeans to make my own milk. And discovered that the most important thing to keep me from going insane was getting a huge variety of foods to give me something new to try every day in the monotony of quarantine, rather than buying bulk amounts of the same food.
    And I learned that having your period while stuck at home watching depressing news, without chocolate or bread or tea, is a baaaad way to spend a day. So stock up, ladies

Most notably in the Norweigian Fjord episode, and the Amazon jungle stay when he gets stalked by a Jaguar and has to bolt for a village full of natives he doesn't know. You can hear it on his mic. It follows him all the way to the village. That was scary.

I know people who’ve done this and have 1-6 months of supplies after a year of making this a practice. It’s not paranoia. It’s insurance. And just like the auto accident you didn’t schedule in, it’s here and now you either have an insurance policy or not. Thank you so much for being you. Prepping is easy. Just buy stuff that stores well everytime you goto the store and then pack it away using one of the many storage methods so you have extra on hand. If you buy shampoo buy an extra bottle. Buying batteries or toilet paper? Buy an extra pack. You do this every time you goto the store with all of your necessities and you've covered a large part of prepping.

      I shop once a week and only buy what's on sale. Why? After doing this for a month or two I literally have enough food to last me months easily while eating quite well. The only thing I really need to buy semi regularly is fresh veggies and fruit but with refrigeration even various varieties of those can last quite a long time. Add in some dried and canned versions of those into the mix and honestly I can do quite well in that department should disaster strike at any time. I don't usually stock up on water because i'm in Canada and literally surrounded by water. A good filter system and boiling will easily work should city water stop flowing. The idea of buying water has always seemed silly to me. Now the best part of this type of "prepping" is you barely notice you're doing it and it's all stuff you're going to actually use anyway. It's food and drink and toiletries and whatever......you cycle it like Les said and life goes on pretty much as normal. PLUS you're always buying bulk on sale so after a while it actually saves you money because you;re never paying full price for anything. Maybe I just have too much free time......

    Thank you Les. I was hoping some sanity might show up and here it is. I'm single and 70 years old in reasonably good health as I'm not around other people for the most part.
    In the last few months I've been doing exactly what you are recommending when I go shopping I buy a few more cans of stew and pork n beans, extra pancake mix, extra maple syrup, I ordered from amazon those maple brown sugar oatmeal packages 18 per box minimum order 2 boxes, A duel propane/butane single burner, Extra Toilet Paper and Paper Towels etc. 8x2 liter bottles of root beer at a time (substitute water) So far I think I could survive for about two weeks without electricity which I see as the 'biggest bad' but still buy a bit more than usual each time I go shopping assuming there's still anything left in the supermarkets.
    I've watched ALL of your Survivorman series several times however, I'm as I said 70 years old and not very likely to be in any one of those situations, BUT, surviving alone in a studio apt for a few weeks may indeed affect me. You have given me some new products to get as well so THANK YOU LES please keep it coming and I'VE MISSED your Survivorman but how much of that can you do, I think you've already covered everything possible for outdoors now the 'indoor Survivorman' I look very forward to. (Assuming we are all still here in 2021?) (grins)

    "... and the healthy shall inherit the world". So my husband and I are on a "counting our calories diet" and have been eating super healthy for a couple weeks now trying to shed a few "winter" pounds. We made a trip to Walmart today for our bi-monthly shopping and we both pretty much laughed our butts off. Gone from the shelves (besides toilet paper and hand soap) was ....party-sized frozen pizzas, bagged and boxed cereals (only the fruity sugery ones... all the "healthy" cereals were in full stock), Water (of course), Bread (which our walmart almost never has anyway), dog/cat food, the cookie/snack aisle was decimated, and here's one we weren't prepared for.... the entire half an aisle of Macaroni and Cheese boxes from various brands were just GONE. All the healthy stuff that we've been eating... in full supply. So our "takeaway" from our trip to Walmart: The healthy people will live to rule the world because no one wants THAT food. LMAO!!!! I love this country (America)!!!! So please, people... please continue to stuff your faces (and your children's faces) with frozen pizzas, mac n' cheese, sugery cereal, chips and cookies. Leave the good stuff for the rest of us.

    Les, I have to say that the biggest prep for me for this entire situation was hurricane sandy. I live and work on the Jersey shore and I put my time in on the front lines. My family and I spent a month without power, which meant no heat and no cooking (We are an all electric household so no natural gas.) During that time we were able to cook using the propane grill outside and a host of sleeping bags to keep warm inside.
    I believe that every situation is a learning experience regardless of how well things worked out. Now, we have a portable camping stove. We don't have an option to install a natural gas line as we rent our house, however I did manage to purchase a generator which will be able to run the stove.
    We do try to keep a stock of food and supplies, but one thing I found we have problems with is expiration dates. We do try to get things that would last for a year or two or three, but many times we forget to rotate stock and so the canned soup in the back expires, or the oatmeal begins to draw bugs. We've tried to get on a monthly inspection routine but ultimately we keep putting it off as it is a boring process. What would your recommendation be as a remedy? We've mulled over making purchases when we believe shit may hit the fan, but we know the masses will panic buy and we don't wish to add to that issue. What would your solution be?
