also, people , staff and patients, have their own personalities. They react on each other by many ways and it makes them so much more real... this game is pure gold and will be as classic as was its predecessor.
The tannoy announcer is one of the employees from 2 Point studios, they couldn't track down the original announcer. (According to the livestream on launch day.)
I used to play the original Theme Hospital so much and I've never found anything to compare with it. Until now, it seems... I believe the phrase I'm looking for is, "Shut up and take my money!"
one thing i love about this is you can have your own custom radio - always fun when prodigy 'firestarter' comes on when my hospital is basically burning to the ground and people running around panicking
I was afraid of being disappointed in THEME HOSPITAL 2 (no matter what you call it) ... but it ended up being better than I expected. God, I am so happy.
Odd..today it would normally be filled with microtransactions required to do anything in a time period that resembles anything that would leave your sanity in tact. Not to mention all the skins and special characters.
Many years ago PC gaming was considered dead and games like these were certainly never going to happen until Steam came around! They definitely regenerated simulation games for the PC market and opened them up to new younger audiences! The best thing about it all is that independent studios are developing these new titles most of the time instead of the usual large AAA developers such as EA. 👍
Yeah, was gonna say its *very* Aardman-esque. I suppose you could call that generic in the sense that the similar designs apply throughout the various Aardman projects, but I wouldn't say its generic in a gaming/3D sense.
Personally I think they were going with the original theme park that they worked on pre wallace and gromit. (watch the intro vid for the midland bank sponsored theme park)
I still play Theme hospital, just brought two point hospital. I must say the original is still great fun AND i love the new one. Will I give up playing Theme? Nah. Will I enjoy the Two Point? oh yes!
So, the game takes up about 4GB and it gets me thinking: I often find games with 70GB install sizes feel vapid and dull, while games that clock in under a few gigabytes tend to... if nothing else, be more focused. It makes me wonder if those games didn't spend so much time on graphics, what kind of game could they have fit into that disk space. What does 70GB of gameplay look like?
Sign of the times really! For those older developers, there was once an art to compression. These days it's more about the 'ooh shiny' and actual in depth gameplay is just forgotten about. That's not to say every game today is, just a higher amount of games produced are... when they're not re-runs or remakes!
This game was made in Unity, and I assume they used the game engine's asset bundles feature to make everything compact, and looking at how simple texture work in the game is (stylistically, not quality-wise) Two Point might've done some optimizations so that Two Point Hospital's assets wouldn't resort in several materials and textures, because those tend to affect both file size and performance.
@@AgsmaJustAgsma well, let's just assume the game was totally wasteful, uncompressed and had 8k textures for everything. We might get another 20gb out of it. But we'd still be 40 shy of the latest Tomb Raider. I'm not drawing a direct comparison, but it makes you wonder what a 70gb Two Point Hospital would look like. Ten thousand different afflictions with a thousand distinct NPCs?
Polygon count, perhaps? I know for certain that some games don't need props with over 8K polygons *cough cough* HDTF *cough cough* Even with every asset uncompressed I don't think a game like Two Point Hospital would reach a file size with the likes of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy XV or Gears of War 4. One thing's for sure: uncompressed video files are often the main culprit for increasing the file sizes. I remember when back in 2013 someone made a torrent of Metal Gear Rising's cutscenes with a more compressed codec to replace the ones inside the game's folder and deflate its 25GB filesize, which by 2013's standards it was still a huge amount of data.
Agsma, Just Agsma That is a good point, 4k pre-rendered cutscenes is a huge file size, but even HD ones can be if of sufficient length. So I guess cutscenes?
Yes! Thank you! I knew this existed but I couldn't remember its name. One of the LP channels I followed started doing Two Point Hospital. It filled me with memories of Theme Hospital
Re the Tannoy announcements, they said on the launch stream yesterday that they tried to find the same actress again but couldn't locate her, so they got someone else but still tried to get the voice as similar as possible. I preordered and really enjoyed the first evening's playing yesterday - I'd been waiting for a successor to TH for many years! :)
Remember putting in my first cheat into theme hospital , to then be horrified that I'd destroyed my game when receptionist announced " Hospital administrator is cheating " ! 😂
I've been waiting for this for close to 20 years. I just wish it was sprites instead of 3D, like the original. You can't recreate that same cartoon graphics feel on 3D.
Jayne Webley is the new announcer voice; Rebecca Green teaches at Blackpool and the Fyled College - Theme Hospital is her only credit. Also, look at all the "Webley" names in the credits, from testers to dogs.
Yeah, Mark Webley and Gary Carr (who both were involved in making Theme Hospistal) made this game. They've been wanting to make this game since 1997 basically but have had bad luck getting it made until now.
Oh theme hospital always brings back the memory of overheating a corridor outside the room they treated people being sick and getting a chain vomit reaction. Was a fun game and will stay on my list for a classic game.
Cheers for highlighting this game - Wasn't aware of it until now...just gonna go add it to my Wishlist now... :) I've been playing Team 17's reboot of Alien Breed recently...not bad...not great. Nice nostalgia trip...

loved theme hospital and roller coaster tycoon. Does make you bit evil sometimes. Creating a hospital where not everyone comes out, putting patients into the research machine but they don't come out. Creating a roller coaster park where rides even a maze breaks down but toilets and food stalls NEVER break down then get to drown visitors for being unhappy (We Happy Few moment, be happy or die). Then there is Zoo Tycoon which is another game I loved (the original not the shitty console thing) where you can delete fences and unleash lions onto the guests. Sim/tycoon games certainly bring out the dark side in people :)
Love your review. You know what Bullfrog game I wish they would remake? Magic Carpet. That game was tremendously fun and really deserves a modern make-over.
God, I loved Theme Hospital back then! It was just recently that I've managed to finally rediscover this game's name and alongside it a bunch of good memories. Thanks for the video!
If you love/loved Theme Hospital then you will love this. Its very enjoyable (even though it does repeat itself sometimes) and you will lose hours in this. The radio stations are very funny as well and as its on Steam be interesting to see if any mods and thus more stations may appear? Its worth playing anyway :)
Absolutely sublime game. My only issue, personally, is the amount of fecking GP's required. I have about 6 to my current 1 diagnosis, pharmacy, ward, cardio ect, and there's still an insane queue for my GPs.
I've been playing all day. It really is an updated theme hospital. Which is a good thing! Though to be totally honest, although I'm loving it, I'm finding it pretty easy, not sure if that's just because I used to play theme hospital... probably.
Has anyone got the link to the source code to make the graphics better in the original? Just started playing it again and I have to say its better than I remembered :-)
Great Review and well thought out and balanced against the Original game. It's all too easy to heap endless praise or scorn on Two point because of its links and similarity to Theme Hospital but I felt you got it pretty much spot on. I really hope that Two Point Studios use this as a platform to give us a spiritual successor to Theme Park next as we never really got that either with Theme Park World/Inc being poor sequels that didn't feel connected to the original. And from there high hopes for more spiritual successors to classics from that era and the "Bulldog" family as well as new ideas too, I'd love a Video Game Tycoon/Game Dev Story style game mode in the Two Point mould.
It wasn't a glitch, it was digital vandalism by a social anarchist. The "Glitch" was discovered by Maxis shortly after release and he was fired. In a 1996 New York Times article he tried to state "there were already bimbos in these games". Maxis stated, "[They have] always prided [themselves] on creating engaging software the whole family can enjoy.'' Maxis terminated him for adding the unauthorized content they now had to scramble to patch out of the game via an 800 number, a downloadable patch, and updated copies. The vandal has been sued for copyright infringement, cyber piracy, fraud, identity theft, libel and etc. for this and other acts designed to deceive the public and damage the reputation of certain companies. He even started a group that would get jobs under various pseudonyms in order to secretly add controversial content to commercial products. He encouraged members to hide adult content in children's products to force recognition of certain social issues, such as homosexuality. He's been arrested more than once.
That's an interesting point of view of the story, I've searched around when I found out about this (I knew it was intentional) but my info was way more sided with the dev. His side of the story goes that he suffered a lot of bullying and prejudice for being homosexual and thus made that into the game as a protest/prank, and after fired he started activism in favor of sexuality acceptance and such. It's obvious tho that every story has at least 2 sides to it, so it's interesting to see the less pride-friendly - as I would call - side of the story too.
Loved Theme Hospital in the 90s, but wow, I never saw that opening video as the videos were always stripped out of the cracked versions of the game. Yeah I was a poor slob then, but now I got money, so I'm going to pick this up.
Was wondering how much Two Point goes compared to TH with Corsix. Now I only have to wait for reviews on the translation. The old game was quite nice in that regard.
@Nostalgia Nerd For some reason your video no longer plays for me in my playlist it may need fixing? Cancel that its my end it works at 360p must be my crap internet or a full cache or hardrive on my PS4 making a bottleneck of sorts, if only i knew how things worked lol
Neat video, thanks, this is what I was looking for (even though it ended up on my homepage without me looking) because I'm a TH fan but I wasn't sure if Two Point would live up to the original so I didn't try it. Have you gone back to the game since? Would you choose to play Theme Hospital or Two Point if you were feeling like playing a hospital simulator?
very late to this, but TPH completely scratched every single itch TH gave me, and then some. Now it's my go-to game for that sort of style. I can't go back to TH now that Two Point is in my catalogue.
@@Takhar7 haha yess! Since I made the comment I bought TPH and a load of the DLC and have spent way too much time on them! I fully agree, it was everything I wanted from a TH successor. Campus was less exciting for me but still fun, but TPH really lived up to everything it could be.
It's not the same announcer. They went looking for her, but failed. However one wife of the developers (I think it was) could do nearly the same dead pan delivery...
I enjoyed your review of Two Point Hospital, thanks for filling us in. However, it doesn't seem your score matches it. Hearing you describe it, it sounds like it's virtually perfect as a spiritual successor to Theme Hospital, even your 'niggle' at the end was actually another pro instead of a con. I'm curious why the score dropped from what seemed like a 10/10 recreation to a 8/10? Was it those brief moments of non-interactivity you mentioned? Also, I didn't notice you make any mention of stability one way or the other... Is it safe to assume that everything ran smoothly on the technical side?
100% stable. No issues. If you want 9/10 or 10/10 then it has to be a game which I cannot tear myself away from. Although it's pretty addictive, it's not quite up to those levels.
@@Nostalgianerd thanks for your reply. Out of curiosity, how do you feel about the game having Denuvo attached to it? I just went to Steam to purchase it and was shocked when I saw that warning label (it was never mentioned in the months leading up to release).
You're not wrong as such. Alan Partridge can explain that particular one in full, but in short, Tannoy is a company that makes PA systems, and is essentially a genericised Trademark in the UK, just as Hoover is for a vacuum cleaner. Like Q-tips or Band-Aids in North America. :)
Makes sense. I remember reading about Spell-o-Tape in Harry Potter, only to find out later it's a pun on Sellotape, which I had never heard of. Oddly enough, we use our own genericized trademark for the same thing. We call it Scotch Tape.
Feels like they made a LOT of improvements from the original. I've been into this game since I got it, it's as much a massive time killer for me as Sims 4 is.
This is hands down the best game i have played this year. I don't play many games, but the ones i do i play to death. I expect this to eat into my Red Dead playtime when that's out :s
Can't decide whether to get this or Planet Coaster. I like simulation games like this where you can grow a business and can watch characters doing stuff. Loved Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 but never played Theme Hospital. Both games look fun to me. Anyone played both and can suggest one over the other?
I'm glad that EA never did a new Theme Hospital game. It would've been a free-to-wait mobile game, similar to Dungeon Keeper Mobile. *Shudder*
Each new room would be a DLC and the decorations per room DLC's
it would be just a very realistic US healthcare simulator.
haha, damn!
Ugh so true
@@sahhull No, the decorations would be in $5-$10 lootboxes.

Is there a sandbox mode in this game atm?
Ello you!
This game looks pleasantly surprising. Good job on Sega for funding the development of this game.
I was waiting for this one to come out, and didn't realise it was out already. Bought!
The best feature of the game is you don't have to delete the fmvs to get it to load
Never heard the word "tannoy" before. (PA announcements for my fellow Americans.) I love learning new British words!
Was I imagining things or did I hear some Tex Murphy music in this video?
Does this have the same kind of addiction as Dungeon Keeper had?
Feels like they made a LOT of improvements from the original. I've been into this game since I got it, it's as much a massive time killer for me as Sims 4 is.
Wow I went into my local charity shop yesterday and found the original theme hospital for the pc in its original case
Love the Larry reference 🤣
This is hands down the best game i have played this year. I don't play many games, but the ones i do i play to death. I expect this to eat into my Red Dead playtime when that's out :s
Can't decide whether to get this or Planet Coaster. I like simulation games like this where you can grow a business and can watch characters doing stuff. Loved Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 but never played Theme Hospital. Both games look fun to me. Anyone played both and can suggest one over the other?
Planet coaster is much more creativity based
Can't help but think of Crapston Villas when I see the characters in this... Anyone else remember that?
I remember that from Locomotion, the old TV channel.
