I love this game!! For anyone looking to play this game for the first time, I have so tips on how to reduce the staff complaints problem. -It is important to note that a lot of pay raise demands usually mean something is making your staff unhappy, raising pay is only a temporary fix. I find that having a large staff room with several sofas, a couple TVs and a pool table helps to avoid this situation. -With a big hospital, your staff may not be able to get to the staff room in time to rest before they reach the point where they start to complain, or are needed again at their work-post, so having a small staff room in unconnected buildings is a must. (Not to mention it helps to keep the rare and elusive surgeons close to the operating theater.) -Having extra items in every room also helps to keep staff happy. I don't recommend plants, since they require care. I usually give each room a heater, a fire extinguisher (which helps to keep your equipment in better shape and may reduce the risk of explosions) and a trash can. -The staff also hates being too hot or too cold, so keeping your hospital properly heated helps reduce complaints. I find a heater in every room usually does the trick. Place them on opposite walls to avoid over-heating. -Hiring an extra nurse or doctor may help to keep things running smoothly while one of them needs a rest. Note: The secretary never needs to rest, so you only need one per reception desk. Hope it helps! :D
Does the receptionist's skill level actually do anything? I generally just go for the cheapest one as she seemingly constantly has minimum tiredness and maximum happiness.
I think Two Point Hospital is in the mould of Sim Hospital rather than Theme Hospital. It's too serious, with real ilnnesses etc. You feel like a hypochondriac after playing for an hour, like is my heart rate normal, oh god have I got kidney stones, etc.
@@vilegrog Okay, the review I watched didn't say that, I will take your word for it. Maybe I will check it out again, though I already have Theme Hospital so why bother.
Funny story about this game, back when I was living in the UK, when I was maybe 8/9 we used to have 'Toy Days' on the last day of school before the summer holidays started, and each of us could basically bring in a toy or whatever and we'd spend the day just playing, and one year I decided to bring in Theme Hospital and have the teacher install it on the big Interactive Whiteboards they have in schools, a lot of fun was had that day
Oh yeah... I remember the ingame announcements towards the patients: "We apologize for the amount of litter" - because my hospitals always were a dump. :D
I played this game a lot when I was younger, I cam back to it a few years ago and realised all the stuff I missed and remembered why I loved it so much. I remember spending hours on this, now I give it to my nieces on a laptop to keep them entertained.
Totally agree with you about the staff management in this game. They will always demand pay rises and will not stick with their designated room which is a serious problem when a patient needs to see a specialist. Ever since I started playing this as part of a Let's Play I'm doing, I've found that the staff seem to be programmed to hate their jobs- regardless of their skill level and how well paid they are. I decided to a test on this by creating a staff room that much more closely resembled an Arcade. The doctors I had onboard quickly ignored their duties, leaving many patients in the reception either vomiting or dying from negligence.
There was an option in a menu to make staff assignments stick, where they would stay in their assigned rooms. Otherwise the staff AI will try to man rooms in demand by drawing on idle doctors or doctors from less busy rooms. You can adjust a slider for how much tiredness staff accumulate before heading to the nearest staff room. I found that overstaffing works. Exactly one staff per room means little when a third of the goobers are on break, a few surplus reserve doctors help if you can afford it. Staff always have a little job satisfaction drop over time. You could go through the staff menu and bump it up with a one-time cash bonus to prevent the demand for a wage increase. It can be a bit tedious, but even several pages of staff is easy to judge. Startopia had the same deal where you had to scroll through the staff menu and check off which ones needed a cash incentive. Working in cramped little offices without a potted plant or heating, or having tiredness build up, drops it faster. The more overworked staff are, the longer time they spend in the staff room getting their tiredness down. And the longer they have to walk to get there, the longer their total time off work becomes. Sometimes it's more efficient to set up a couple new staff rooms in a huge, sprawling hospital than to have one huge, central arcade. This is a game about managing flow and how much time people waste walking from one end to the other.
The best staff room is as small as possible with only sofas so the staff stay sat down resting quicker than if they are wandering between pool tables and arcades in a large room.
RE: The room sizes - The room sizes are based on being able to place the room equipment in the given space, AND allowing the sprites to walk through the room to reach their action-points. So sure, you can have 16 tiles or whatever, but the equipment needs to fit AND allow the sprites to move through the room.

I'd play this game again if it weren't for the constant earthquakes on the later levels. It was so ridiculous. The earthquakes occurred so frequently that I wasn't able to maintain my machines fast enough and they would explode. The game does not allow me to clear the debris so the room I built for the machine is rendered useless. I was spamming my hospital with maintenance staff, too. I wouldn't have minded the earthquakes so much if I at least had the option to clear the debris!
ninja plz Replace hardware of the machines every so often, it brings them back on full strenght - otherwise the strenght will lower down to 1 over time. Earthquakes do 1-6 damage, so that's why your machines blow up. Also the earthquakes come in pairs - the first one being warning, not dealing damage. When you get the first earthquake, quick save (alt+s). If some of your machines get wrecked, quick load (alt+l) and stop that from happening again.
That's the challenge tho, you can't remove the destroyed rooms so you won't easily win the game. Just put an army of maintenance and you're set. Also a tip for earthquake, usually there will be 2 earthquake in one instance. The first one will be smaller, following with the bigger one that usually would destroy the machinery. When the first one starts to happen, reduce the game speed to slowest, and then save the game. Then start replacing every damaged machines so they won't blow up on the 2nd earthquake. In case there's still a machine you can't save, re-load the game and quickly replace that machine so you can prevent its demise. Slowest speed will be your best buddy on the later levels.
I just reinstalled Sim Theme Park, because I missed these types of games. Thanks for another wonderful review and helping me bring back a little nostalgia!
Interesting. Your copy of Theme hospital doesn't come with the restart game option in the file menu. Also I would like to point out that for anyone new to the game it does have a pause and slow down function. It's 1,2,3, and P just like in the Sims. If you suffer from a rat problem you should slow down the game and kill it real time. Apparently if you kill enough rats or know a secret code you can unlock a minigame at least that's what I've read. There are cheat codes for both versions of the game so feel free to use that when the game starts getting odd on you.
Holy smokes! Thank you very very much! I just tried this game, and I found it borderline unplayable even on the easiest setting. The hospital got flooded with people when I just have finished the second room and the staff quits like 2 minutes after they're hired.. I hired a blazing fast janitor once, and he wanted a raise, like everyone and their mother, but he was so fast I couldn't click on him! I will give it another try on lower speed. The micromanagement will still be insane though. All the maintenance stuff is tedious and deviates from the core game. Radiators, fire extinguishers, plants, benches, trash cans and freaking soda machines shouldn't be part of the game, there's enough to do already.
There's actually 5 speed settings: slowest, slow, medium, fast, and fastest. They can be activated from the menu or using numbers 1-5 although fastest only works in the original DOS version. In the windows version, 4 and 5 (fast and fastest) run at exactly the same speed. No idea why.
This is nostalgia crack.. One of my favourite games of all time. This and age of empires were the two games that come with our first PC. Good memories of childhood.
OMG! One of the best games of my childhood! I loved that they have placed the characters who look like those from Dungeon Keeper (another great game) in the intro. It's very addicting and fun game and as you have mentioned it does stand the test of time.
Damn I loved this game when I was a kid. It was hilarious and very entertaining. The only drawback it had was, as you said, the later levels can get repetitive. There are only like 10 patient models and like 10 diseases to cure. If they had made it more expansive it would have been an incredible game.
This was the only computer game at an after school club I went to for those children whose parents didn't love the enough to pick them up at home time, I was about 7, none of us really understood this game, we borrowed loads of money, built massive staff rooms with tvs and just generally ruined the game because for us it was an acheivement to get to the second level, I bought it a little while ago, and started to play it on our ancient computer, 4 words I LOVE THIS GAME :)
your room placement is driving me nuts-I do like this game very much, my mom played it when i was young and i was drawn to it, playing myself repeatedly, though not winning until I was older, and I'm glad you liked it! for real though, that room placement is driving me insane....
I hope you saw they basically remastered this and added way more. It's called two point hospital and it's pretty obvious it's made by the same company. A+
Two point hospital is the spiritual successor to theme hospital two point studio was created by some of the devs from the former bullfrog studio. two point campus is also out now by the same studio both the radio DJ and pa announcer on both two point games are the original voices from theme hospital and park🙂
I love this game, I've still got my original box. The more annoying problem for me are the earthquakes, once it destroys one of your rooms, you are left with rubble that can't be cleaned up, eventually half of your hospital is in rubble and you cant do anything about it.
I agree that the staff AI and the repetition of having to build every hospital from scratch are this game's greatest flaws, but it's otherwise great. Never got around to finishing it, though.
:) I've been playing it on and off for 22 years. Only today did I notice one of my patients peeing on the floor, out front of one of the loos. None of the janitors wanted to clean it up so I had to hire someone especially for it. lolol
I had this on the Playstation one as a child and absolutely loved it, I have so many fond memories. I got the game for PC on GOG a couple of years ago now and obviously prefer the PC version as it has more to it than the PS version. It's still a lot of fun to this day and still challenging.
Now that Planet Coaster and Project Highrise are out, it wouldn't be a bad idea to modernize Theme Hospital! That could turn out to be something pretty awesome I think! A guy can always dream at least..
It got a "kind of" sequel in Hospital Tycoon, but that game was rushed in the end and never lived up to its real potential. There's enough game there that you can see where it could have gone, and I think it had the potential to be even better than Theme Hospital, but in the end it was a huge disappointment for me. What I'd love is a sequel where they had the resources and could take the time to do it properly, and even allow fan made mods as well for things like new diseases and equipment. Maybe even have multiple themes which would basically be re-skins - historical hospital, modern hospital, future hospital, serious hospital etc.
I was looking for this game for a long time but forgot the name, this was the only game I can afford when I was a kid that is close to sims, now I know the name of the game, thank you LGR
Love this game, and I'm glad you reviewed it ^_^ I've been playing this game for so long I almost got to the final level without any deaths whstsoever! A major part of the game play is making sure the rooms are as efficient as possible and laying out your hospital to have enough room to house many patience, while still slowing a clear path between diagnosis and curing rooms. I understand the complaint about the minimum room requirement, but the thing that irked me more about the game was how the hospitals were never symetrical, but that's just a personal OCD about wanting the same rooms in an area and not being able to fit them -.-
I absolutely loved this game, although I never managed to finish it. Theme Hospital and Dungeon Keeper are my favorite Bullfrog games. I still play them about once a year.
+Randal Skefingtonidis When I think of "comedy gold", the first thing that comes to mind is prison. Think about it! They have to worry about food poisoning and soap dropping while we get to live a decent life! Now that's comedy gold.
+Randal Skefingtonidis This game is still a ton of fun today. It's pretty simplistic but it's still a total blast and is a great contrast to Prison Architect's much more demanding style IMO.
prison architect, how cute. my colonists in rimworld wish they could live in the luxury of a prison. unfortunately in their world, theres only disease, pyromania, cannibalism and death.
I had this game for the PlayStation in the early 2000s and would play it with my brother ALL THE TIME. My dad still jokes around with quotes from the game to this day! I also got it for free on Origin a while back as well and I still revisit it from time to time. Truly a classic.
despite his claim that you don't need the manual... there are actually some very important things that aren't even explained beyond the manual. You can find these points around the Internet.
I'm gonna say it.....this is one of the best games ever made. Yeah I said it. The best way to beat this game on the later levels is to take out the maximum loan, build everything possible. Once you build the research facility, set diagnosis research to 100%. Keep building the newly researched rooms. Gradually pay back the loan and watch the money and rep roll in.
Once, I bought the PS1 version of Theme Hospital from the PlayStation Store. Bad idea, whooo boy... It was crap. Low res graphics, no music, it was a high fidelity port of the game. *FOR THE PS1.* My dad still laughs at the bedpen joke when you hover over the game in the PS3 menu.
its nice to see you like the british sense of humor, i've never played theme hospital but i have played theme park world which was fun and cool but i could never make it past the first level...
I'm glad EA never did a follow-up to this game. I can imagine them making a sequel on mobile device as a free to wait game, riddled with microtransactions.
Been watching through a bunch of your videos recently, both old & new, and UA-cam recommended this one to me, another fantastic video for a fantastic childhood game, would love to play this again someday! 😁👍 (never did fully play through it!)
I absolutely loved this game as a kid on the PC, I went fan boy mode when I had heard they released the PS release on the PSN for the PS3 and PSP. Which I have, I find it hilarious how I not once beat the PC version 100% but I can play this on my PSP and win without trying. Still a great game that tickles my nostalgia every time I pick it up.. and the one game boxes I love seeing at the beginning of your videos.
Dungeon Keeper, Theme Hospital, Theme Park World, Age of Empires 1 & 2, Pharoah, Homeworld. Those where great games and to this day, they still are. I miss those days. I used to play those games a lot and from time to time even to this very day, will go back and play them.

One of my favourite games of all time. This and age of empires were the two games that come with our first PC. Good memories of childhood.
Free on Origin... I got it too lol
Captain Cartman Yeah, I got this free on Origin as well. I haven't actually played it until after watching this video.
RothGamingOfficial Ha ha, it's funny. I actually have quite a few free games from Origin.....and I haven't even touched a single one. XD
Captain Cartman
Damn, missed it.
Gene Glagolev It's like $5 on GOG. Get that one. They updated the textures for modern resolutions.
The only reason I use Origin is because of free games, lol.
OMG! One of the best games of my childhood! I loved that they have placed the characters who look like those from Dungeon Keeper (another great game) in the intro. It's very addicting and fun game and as you have mentioned it does stand the test of time.
Not just dungeon keeper there's also a syndicate cameo in that intro X)
This is one of the most addictive games of all time for 20 years I am returning to it titme to time.
I found that always taking the maximum loan for each scenario at the very beginning of the scenario made the scenario a cakewalk. Scenario.
Loans are definitely the way to go. You pay next to nothing in interest to float loans and the benefits of investing that money are huge.
Scenario

Thanks for the link to GOG, haven't been able to find this anywhere and oh my it's amazing. Memories
I can only feel that an NHS theme hospital would be a lot more boring.
You'd pretty much end up with this LGR - SimHealth - DOS PC Game Review
+Lazy Game Reviews i love you
As opposed to the American healthcare system simulator, where the hospital consists of the rich person wing and the second mortgage bank.
Eric Bishton Visit an NHS hospital
Damn I loved this game when I was a kid. It was hilarious and very entertaining. The only drawback it had was, as you said, the later levels can get repetitive. There are only like 10 patient models and like 10 diseases to cure. If they had made it more expansive it would have been an incredible game.
This game is so great, I used to play it in after-school care, it is a huge part of my childhood :O
I remember my older cousin showing me this game when i was in like 5th grade. I bought it on gog.com after seeing this. Absolutely amazing.
this is free on origin now
omegaweapon27 thanks
I love this game, I've still got my original box. The more annoying problem for me are the earthquakes, once it destroys one of your rooms, you are left with rubble that can't be cleaned up, eventually half of your hospital is in rubble and you cant do anything about it.
Got this for free on origin a while ago and haven't bothered playing it until seeing this review :D
This is one of my all time faves.. the humour is so awesome
I agree that the staff AI and the repetition of having to build every hospital from scratch are this game's greatest flaws, but it's otherwise great. Never got around to finishing it, though.
Such a great game. I still play it 27 years later.
This game has held up well for being 23 years old.
I got the game when it was free on Origin, but didn't play it until I saw this video. Thanks LGR, it is a really good game.
any plans for Two Point Hospital soon?
:) I've been playing it on and off for 22 years. Only today did I notice one of my patients peeing on the floor, out front of one of the loos. None of the janitors wanted to clean it up so I had to hire someone especially for it. lolol
Glad we have Two Point Hospital now, hmmmmm.Who came here after playing Two Point?
I had this on the Playstation one as a child and absolutely loved it, I have so many fond memories. I got the game for PC on GOG a couple of years ago now and obviously prefer the PC version as it has more to it than the PS version. It's still a lot of fun to this day and still challenging.
Now that Planet Coaster and Project Highrise are out, it wouldn't be a bad idea to modernize Theme Hospital! That could turn out to be something pretty awesome I think! A guy can always dream at least..
And it came true, Two Point Hospital
I love this game. Every time I buy a new PC or laptop I always install this game. Such a classic never goes old!
When are you going to review Two-Point Hospital?
1:31 Awww, they threw in the Horned Reaper. That's a cute nod to Dungeon Keeper. Good on you Bullfrog.
That was such an awesome Game, could need a Sequel!
Two Point Hospital is a spiritual successor. Check it out.
I was looking for this game for a long time but forgot the name, this was the only game I can afford when I was a kid that is close to sims, now I know the name of the game, thank you LGR
l just got it for free from origin!!! XD
Same
Same! I was so excited since I haven't played it in years and always wanted to try and finish it. One of my fav games.
Same
I got it free from steam and i am running it on a windows 8.1 laptop XD
KURO CALVO origin ha
Watching this was an amazing blast from the past! I loved this game!
We gonna have new theme hospital, two point hospital...
I understand the complaint about the minimum room requirement, but the thing that irked me more about the game was how the hospitals were never symetrical, but that's just a personal OCD about wanting the same rooms in an area and not being able to fit them -.-
whoa, this game figured out a simple way to create a room in the 1997.
Meanwhile Maxis's Sims franchise figured it out 17 years later.
I absolutely loved this game, although I never managed to finish it. Theme Hospital and Dungeon Keeper are my favorite Bullfrog games. I still play them about once a year.
It's free on orgin
HELP i really cant stop watching your videos my eyes is like glued to my pc
And this is why you now buy Prison Architect.
....
Except the humor is gone..
+Randal Skefingtonidis What do you mean "Having to build and use an execution chamber for the tutorial level is too grim"?
+Randal Skefingtonidis
When I think of "comedy gold", the first thing that comes to mind is prison.
Think about it! They have to worry about food poisoning and soap dropping while we get to live a decent life!
Now that's comedy gold.
+Randal Skefingtonidis This game is still a ton of fun today. It's pretty simplistic but it's still a total blast and is a great contrast to Prison Architect's much more demanding style IMO.
prison architect, how cute. my colonists in rimworld wish they could live in the luxury of a prison. unfortunately in their world, theres only disease, pyromania, cannibalism and death.
ow the edge
I had this game for the PlayStation in the early 2000s and would play it with my brother ALL THE TIME. My dad still jokes around with quotes from the game to this day! I also got it for free on Origin a while back as well and I still revisit it from time to time. Truly a classic.
I have played this since i was a kid... I have NEVER been able to beat it not even on easy mode :)
despite his claim that you don't need the manual... there are actually some very important things that aren't even explained beyond the manual.
*FOR THE PS1.* My dad still laughs at the bedpen joke when you hover over the game in the PS3 menu.
so i should get the dos version
Yes. Get it from gog.com
its nice to see you like the british sense of humor, i've never played theme hospital but i have played theme park world which was fun and cool but i could never make it past the first level...
I'm glad EA never did a follow-up to this game. I can imagine them making a sequel on mobile device as a free to wait game, riddled with microtransactions.
Looks like we're getting a true sequel, though.
Been watching through a bunch of your videos recently, both old & new, and UA-cam recommended this one to me, another fantastic video for a fantastic childhood game, would love to play this again someday! 😁👍 (never did fully play through it!)
Theme hospital made me become a doctor, I will never forget that game!
I played SO MUCH of this game. I absolutely loved building massive training rooms and having armies of consultants.
I love how you pointed out the Dungeon Keeper Cameo but not the Syndicate Cameo in the same shot.
Very well explained, thank you! It was my favorite game growing up, so I wanted to show my son. I still have the CD ROM.
This game was my childhood 😅
I absolutely loved this game as a kid on the PC, I went fan boy mode when I had heard they released the PS release on the PSN for the PS3 and PSP. Which I have, I find it hilarious how I not once beat the PC version 100% but I can play this on my PSP and win without trying. Still a great game that tickles my nostalgia every time I pick it up.. and the one game boxes I love seeing at the beginning of your videos.
Great review - can't stop playing this game!
This games was great. Brings back good memories. Unfortunately, I always ran out of personnel in the end game :(
Definitely a classic, isometric 3D at his best. Great vid.
Dungeon Keeper, Theme Hospital, Theme Park World, Age of Empires 1 & 2, Pharoah, Homeworld. Those where great games and to this day, they still are. I miss those days. I used to play those games a lot and from time to time even to this very day, will go back and play them.
Sim Theme Park was my favorite of the Bull Frog games growing up!
re-installed this a few days ago and didn't realise you had a review for it!
The graphics of this game will never get old. So well made, why don't they make games like these anymore! There was a sort of theme hospital clone with 3d graphics but my god that one sucked. I regreted the 2 euro's i paid on that one. Reinstalled theme hospital again and played that. Awesome awesome game.
I remember renting this from Blockbuster on PS1.
