utility of spear is really good (perforate applies weaken and rend to enemies), greatsword is a good choice but one spear per team is usually the best.

There is nothing I hate more than linking gear and someone not picking you because you're not rocking BIS Gear. I have beat m3s with full purple one perk gear with no gems to prove a point to the top players of my server. SKILL>GEAR ill die on that hill.
