    Saying that you shouldn’t wear a shirt about leatherface because it was (loosely) inspired by ed gein is like saying you can’t use anything about Star Wars because of it’s similarities with the nazi Germany, it’s just ridiculous!!!!!!

      I don't think it's an issue so much of common sense as difference in opinion. It's like she said in the video, some people think wearing tshirts or whatever that depict killers on them is in a way glorifying murder (even though that's obviously not the wearers intention) and that's a completely valid opinion to hold. It's not one that I, or you by the sound of it, agree with, but still it's a valid opinion to hold. It may not be offensive because there are no previous victims, but whether or not TV programmes, films, games, etc depicting murder and murder methods inspires real killers is disputed - it's definitely not cut and dry, so I think people thinking those tshirts are wrong to wear is a completely legitimate thought to have and we shouldn't just dismiss them :)

    I think another big difference is that the (purely) fiction was created to be art. The murders were performed to inflict pain. However, when it gets into the "based on a true story"/fictionalised versions it's kinda case-by-case, and that can pose some important questions and spark conversations that we should be having.

    Interesting topic, Sarah! I completely agree with you but for some reason during the whole video I thought about Elephant (2003) which was about school shooting and possibly loosely inspired by Columbine shooting. I mean, it's fictional in the same way that Texas Chainsaw Massacre is fictional but somehow I don't think twice about anybody wearing Texas Chainsaw Massacre t-shirt but I wouldn't sit beside a kid who wears Elephant merch on a bus. Possibly because Texas Chainsaw Massacre was meant to be an entertainment but Elephant was always meant to be terrifyingly real. It just shows that grey area exist because art is sometimes grey, but yeah in general I agree with you.

    As the great Stephen king once quoted, ”We make up horrors to help us cope with the real ones”, I have a shelf full of Michael Myers masks, Freddy Krueger gloves and so forth these iconic slashers....they didn’t actually go killing people, the scary movies that we all know and love were created by young film makers who were having the time of their life shooting these films they win awards they inspire people and everyone was having a good time no one is harmed and everything is great and everyone wins ❤️🎃 and that’s the difference between fake horrors and the real horrors, in the real horrors everything is real everyone is scared everyone is depressed and everyone loses.

    as for wearing merch of fictional killers based on real killers, i guess my gauge would be to consider facing the victims of the real killer, and if they would be upset by the association. i guess that's hard to know, but i would probably err on the side of caution. it'd be really interesting to hear their opinions on the topic, as they are probably the most important people to consider. i guess it's quite a grey area, and you could make assumptions based on how far removed the fiction is from the real thing 🤷‍♀️

    I’ve legit never met anyone who understood liking horror and it not immediately being a taboo demonic thing. You hit the nail on the proverbial head saying that there has to be a balance between understanding fiction is fiction and reality is just that - real life. And there are victims. And those victims have families. There have been exploitive movies, series and books that I’ve stayed away from out of respect for the victims and their families. There is a line and it’s just something you have to approach carefully and gauge with your moral compass. You did such an amazing job of voicing this. Really. Couldn’t agree with you more. And I don’t think it was in bad taste to wear a movie tee when talking about serial killers. Sadly we live in an age where it takes so very little to be offended vs taking the discussion in with an open mind.

  • @KerlyFries
    @KerlyFries 5 років тому +3

    I think the easiest way to make the distinction is picture wearing the shirt in front of victims families or anyone effected. Scream is very loosely based on the Gainesville Ripper. I lived in Gainesville a good chunk of my life, and I don’t think anyone in the entire town would give a shit about a ghost face tattoo or T-shirt. I haven’t talked to the families themselves, but if I ever had I wouldn’t second guess wearing a Scream shirt in front of them. But I sure as shit wouldn’t have a Danny Rolling shirt on. It’s about being respectful to those effected and not glorifying the horror a real person did. I feel like it’s pretty damn simple.
    The grey area, ish, would be say can you wear an Extremely Wicked shirt, or get a tattoo of Zac Efron as Ted Bundy? Personally I don’t think that is a grey area. It’s not that the movie was bad or disrespectful, but...Before I lived in Gainesville, I lived in Lake City. I have a friend who’s cousin was named Kimberly Diane (last name not mentioned for her privacy) because her mother was friends with the victim before she died. I can’t imagine wearing a T-shirt portraying Zac Efron as Ted Bundy in front of her and having to explain why I felt justified. It’s too close.
    But I can see the argument for that being a grey area because it’s still fiction, and it’s glorifying a good movie not the killer himself! But to me it’s too close.

    The Chernobyl series is absolutely over-dramatisised, if you read the interviews with people who were there and lived through it who compare the mini-series to the actual events, it's clear that they altered a lot to make it better suited for tv- which is fine and cool, it's not a documentary. But people are viewing it as if it were a documentary, and it can be dangerous if people start opposing nuclear power even more than before, when it's one of the best solutions for non-fossil fuel energy if we want a chance at reversing or at least slowing down the damage we've done to the atmosphere.

    You give an awesome and thorough analysis. I also find it puzzling that some of these things actually need a complete explication like you provided. I like to concentrate on the intent thing most, though, I mean like a teenage kid who says something gauche like "My favorite serial killer is...." probably doesn't mean anything cruel or malicious. On a different note entirely, for example, those movies that depict trans characters get things way wrong or make us flat out monsters, and that is disconcerting, but I don't think the directors/producers/writers of Sleepaway Camp, Silence of the Lambs, etc. were malicious, but the depictions are still telling about societal transphobia/othering of trans people.....But again, because the INTENT wasn't cruel, I can still watch and enjoy these movies.....Of course with the real killers the real victims variable gives it almost no wiggle room at all.....

    the thing is that a story can be read in many ways, whereas a real-life tragedy cannot be interpreted in a wide number of ways. I get having a serial killer t-shirt, for example, if it is used to critique society or people who glorify them but I think that there would be likely many more people who would wear it to glorify the killer and/or the act, so that is why real-life killers are off-limits and fictional ones are more ok. I understand that for some people making the distinction can be hard, but they could put an effort into reasoning and thinking about it.

    Completely agree, I wear horror movie merch all the time. I have a very large tattoo of Patrick Bateman on my leg and I’ve even been told it’s I’m bad taste. It’s not real, there’s no victims so nobody to offend 🤷🏻‍♀️
    Just to point out, I also agree with the original video, very bad taste to wear/have tattoos of or inspired by real events

    I heard the Ed Gien(?) story and saw Texas Chainsaw Massacre and I knew it was loosely based off of it but if I hadn’t been told that I never would’ve put 2 and 2 together. So, what are you guys talking about?

  • @roselinestephania
    @roselinestephania 5 років тому +1

    I think a fictional killer is so much more than that, in reality, a real life killer is a monster, but a fictional one is the creation of someone else. I'm not a fan of horror myself, but there's a lot of credit in creating a realistic character, even if it's barely based on a real person. Idk, to me it's much more than that, it's the story, the characters, the film itself, it's the work a lot of people put into it (actors, directors, etc). But that's just me.

    I agree. I feel that it is important that shows and movies 1) respect the victims 2) accurately and sensitively portray mental health conditions

    Lots of Disney fans have Snow White and Florian tattooed on them and no one is calling them out for having a tattoo of a pedophile, or Belle and Beast for bestiality, or GoT characters who murder every other person, or James Marsters (Spike from Buffy) and questioning why they have a tattoo of a sexual assaulter. Fiction is NOT the same thing. NOT. THE. SAME.

    personally i think it depends on the character, its depiction, and, if it's based on real life, how closely it resembles its base. mercy black is in poor taste because they used & heavily sensationalized a real attempted murder for horror factor. texas chainsaw massacre is okay because leatherface only loosely resembles ed gein & the story is completely fictional.

  • @makimaluver5457

    Like it’s not the same if someone has like a shirt of a loosely based killer for
    Example: if someone has a penny wise shirt no one should be offended because he only killed fictional people
    But if someone has a John Wayne Gacy shirt it is more offensive to the victims because he killed ACTUAL people

  • @ddtottot
    @ddtottot 5 років тому +2

    Speaking strictly from a movie making perspective, when you buy a shirt with the face of a fictional killer on it, you are not supporting that character’s actions, you are supporting the art and the effort made by countless individuals that worked on that movie. People put in hours of work to piece together these horror films. If I get a shirt with Michael Myers on it, it’s because he is the face of an art piece. You’re also supporting the effort made by the actor that played the killer. For example, I love the movie Terrifier. Art The Clown was a very violent killer, and it was pretty gross what he did. But I love the way the actor portrayed him. I felt like the actor did a great job with the character. So I very much agree that it’s not the same thing as serial killer tattoos. Ok, I’ll get off my soapbox lol

  • @sicko033
    @sicko033 4 роки тому

    I personally love the movie Zodiac because everything that happens is shockingly accurate to the actual events, and there was little to no dramatization. That’s how it should be done

  • @0ReigningCats0
    @0ReigningCats0 5 років тому +2

    I agree with your message and don't think wearing fictional killer merch is problematic. However, I do see the other side of the argument. If your validation of wearing a Leatherface shirt is that there are no real victims or families of victims, I think it's worth thinking about the families of victims they were based off of.
    For example, if my family member was murdered by a real person who inspired a movie character, and I saw someone casually wearing the character's face on clothing, I would find it very upsetting. Especially if the character is widely known to be inspired by a real killer, such as in this case. Again, no hate, I just think it's worth thinking about this from a victim (or their family's) point of view if that's what you use for justification.

    As a subsequent victim of a murder, it does not entertain me to see fictional characters be murdered. I personally still find it offensive to romanticize or idolize fictional murderers/ serial killers, even if there are no ‘real’ victims. If you find it entertaining at all, what does it matter if it really happened or not? I think we need to stop finding enjoyment in things that are hurtful to so many.

    I'm russian and it was kinda funny how people thought that Chernobyl is realistic, but now it just makes me sad. Do you really think that people WHO LIVED AROUND the fucking station didn’t get what was going on? Of course, the miners were naked and immediately agreed to this because they are so cool that they don’t care about their lives and families at all
    The coal minister was over 60 during the events, and he was a miner himself for a long time, no robots on the roof, there are no chances to the second explosion that will be as bad as first was and my favorite no one drank alcohol that time due to the dry law.... do i even need to continue? The writers apparently wanted to add drama, as if it was not enough already
