      Consider this, you get bullied all of your high school life and get dirty looks and abuse from people in public because of the way you look and what you listen to. Suddenly being pissy about reducing your favourite bands to a fashion trend isn't so stupid. People quiz others so they know that they are in the same community and have the same interests, some of the best people I've met have been metalheads and some of the worst have been "normal" people and so I'm more inclined to quiz someone on a band just to make sure they are the later.

    Once I was asked about a Cure shirt I was wearing. I was prepared for the dude to ask me my five favorite songs by The Cure, but instead he started talking about a live album they recorded (which I hadn't listened to at that point), and he was so friendly about it! If more people were like that, damn, I'm pretty sure more people would feel welcome to listen to rock/metal/alt/etc. bands.

  • @harleymoone
    @harleymoone 7 років тому +331

    Yes! Thank you! I've been into metal for as long as I can remember and it always infuriates me whenever some rando on the street or online feels the need to make me prove I'm not a poser because I'm wearing an Iron Maiden shirt. I've even had people accuse me of wearing band tees to impress guys, which honestly pisses me off even more.
    And I do really believe there's sexism behind this considering I've been out with my boyfriend, who is also into metal, and will have a conversation with someone about music yet once I hop into the conversation the other person responds with skepticism as if I don't know what I'm talking about. Dead serious, a guy once said that I've probably never listened to any Metallica albums besides Master of Puppets because I was wearing a Master of Puppets shirt so I was more than happy to tell him that my favorite songs weren't even on the Master of Puppets album.
    Anyway, I went on a tangent but you worded everything I've wanted to say on this topic perfectly and hopefully more people will realise that hey, it's just music, not a way to bully people.

You're being just as petty as they are. This groups vs that group is all we see on social media in 2017, it needs to stop.

      how is that surprising? queen is in a lot of mainstream films targeted to that age group. queen is not a band that should be surprising to listen to. kids now have the internet and for decades people know what their parents listened to so queen and classic bands from the 80s make absolutely no sense to think kids dont listen to. with the internet anyone can listen to anything from any time frame. its surprising that people still have that mentality

      people need to stop thinking they own music just because they're from a certain generation. I know how they feel because I've had to stop myself from being bitter about Gorillaz getting so popular all of a sudden. I grew up listening to them, I used to listen to their cd in the SUV with my mom and I still remember the "music videos" I'd see when I listened to them. None of my friends knew who they were and now everyone knows them and everyone's listening to them. I stopped myself from thinking "these people are so annoying, they're only pretending to like this band because it's trendy now etc etc" and instead i realize that I'm happy that people like *my* childhood music, I'm happy that this band I loved is getting more attention, I'm happy they're successful. Be glad that people are supporting the musicians you know and love, don't be bitter. If you see some kid wearing David Bowie merch, instead of getting possessive remember that, just like you, they might have grown up on that music or maybe they just discovered them and fell in love because David Bowie's music is really neat. You do not own these people, you do not own that music.

      samm_ pole Same! Once a random man saw me with my dad at a record store and he said "what is a little girl like you doing at a record store??" (This was one my birthday last year, when I turned 12) and I said "I'm shopping for them. It's my birthday and I wanted some records. My favorite albums are from Elvis!" I didn't think anything of it until I saw the dumbfounded look on his face, and now I kinda laugh

    A 30-40 something year old dude at my job saw me wear a lamb of god shirt one day and was like you don’t even know who they are. (I’ve been a fan since I was 13, seen them live, etc) I literally just rolled my eyes and walked away. Now that I dress “normal” people judge me for wearing band shirts. When I used to dress “goth” people made fun of me. You can’t win. Needless to say, I stopped wearing band shirts at work.

      Dani i relate to your comment so much(minus the band t moment). Was labeled as a goth all through Jr high and high school. I look much more normal now. I blame a mix of being older and working in retail. Anyway, I dyed by hair a teal color and then all of a sudden i became cool enough to be talked to by the misfit crowd at work. As if I wasn't before but gained a badge of honor by dying my hair a non natural color. They have no idea of what I have done in the past or what my interests are because it's not really reflected in my appearance anymore. And that somehow translates to, I'm normal or boring or that I couldn't possibly be into anything they are interested in. Its actually quite sad. Youre right though, damned if do, damned if you don't.

      so relatable Dani!! we are being judged because of anything tbh i mostly dress head to toe black because i feel comforable that way (not that is anyone's business) and people used to make fun of me when i was younger (since i was 13 at least, i am 20 now) and every time i wear something with color some people still make fun. onyxandluna someone once quizzed me on a Marvel vs Capcom 3 shirt I own and I (probably shouldn’t have) obliged them. I don’t understand why people think they’re so goddamn special. I’m also into Wrestling and Hot Topic recently starting selling merch for some of my favourite workers from Japan, and for me, it makes me so happy seeing people rep that merch. Wouldn’t life be so much nicer if we just embraced each other’s common interests instead of shutting people out arbitrarily?

      They're not the only people who want to be oppressed so bad, that's for sure. This isn't even a gendered issue. Not once was gender mentioned in any of the comments Sarah showed on screen. Yet this video is somehow about being an oppressed woman because some people asked if she likes the bands or not.

  • @snusmumriken3912

    I guess it's because a lot of people who listen to metal/punk/rock in general are social outcasts and the music was their special thing, music is always very dear to people's heart. People wearing band tees of bands they don't listen to reduces the music to just a trendy look, which always suck. It's like this small rebellion you had against society is worth nothing anymore because society took it from you by making it normal. Yeah, it's just a shirt but it's also a symbol. (also side note, mass producing band shirts of punk is stupid af and very much not punk rock) It kinda bothers me when people do it, and personally I'd never wear a band tee of a band I don't listen to, but the comments you get are absolutely ridiculous.

But if someone doesn't know the band then I usually just leave it alone or I might suggest a song. I never tell someone that they're stupid or whatever. What is even the point ya know?

    • @skullslace2426
      @skullslace2426 6 років тому +8

      It's also really an intention thing. You can clearly differentiate between people who ask you out of interest and because they like the music, and people who think you're a poser. Luckily I've only dealt with people of the first kind so far, and we've always ended up with new bands to check out and listening recommendations. :)
      I do have to admit, I personally don't go to concerts of bigger bands, because I struggle with anxiety in larger crowds, and I like the intimate setting with smaller bands. Also, the tickets are cheaper and leave me more money for CDs and merchandising XD
      I've only once been to a concert of a more well-known group and it wasn't really fun. There were mostly kids (14-16) there, I got a boot to my head so hard I lost consciousness, and the people in the moshpit just ended up MMAing one another. Not much fun.

    • @allisonfields3108
      @allisonfields3108 6 років тому +1

      Amber Peterson It's good that you're respectful and don't judge people, but I implore you to do some soul searching and really ask yourself why it bothers you. I can't understand the logic. By wearing the shirt they are both giving money to and supporting the band, and raising awareness. It shouldn't matter. It's like the "I liked or before it was cool" mindset.
      I do understand the "you made me feel like shit for listening to this music, but now you're wearing the shirt and/or listening to them just because it's mainstream" mindset, but that's very specific and can't be the case for every single person who wears one.

    This happens with comic books and video games too. I've heard lots of stories from women who go into comic book stores and the employees try to mansplain to them what comics they should be reading and question whether or not they actually read comics. It's so fucking annoying. It's like women can't enjoy "masculine" things unless they're trying to impress men.

    • @suez7615

The use things with negative inflection like "feminist" and tell me I must have cheated or attack my appearance even though they can't see me. They don't do this to each other.
      Oh, the other day this dude and his friend were playing against me, so I had my friend join and they kept making fun of me telling me "I sucked because I needed backup". Excuse me, it was 2 on 1. I evened the score.

It’s not just the metal scene, too- it’s definitely the punk scene as well. If you listen to more pop punky bands like Green Day or NOFX or AFI you’re not a TrUe PuNx!!! It’s completely ridiculous. Why are people so concerned with what other people wear?? If I see someone wearing a band tee I never think “ugh, they probably don’t even listen to them” I think “oh cool, they like *this* band.” And even if they didn’t listen to them- who honestly cares?? How does it affect you?

Being an old fart I've developed a love for different genres of music over the years. Two concerts I loved in the last year or so were Motionless in White (freakin awesome!!) and Coldplay (quite magical). Polar opposites, but loved both of them. The mood I'm in typically dictates what type of music I listen to, but most of the time it's heavy and loud! I have quite a few band tees I typically buy from gigs. I love a good band tee! :) x

    I know this is old but I use to get his all the time. I don't look like I listen to metal, I listen to lots of different stuff, but I use to get this all the time when I would wear a Mastadon t'shirt. I ended up getting rid of it because I couldn't take the constant questioning without freaking out at men in the end. I also had a long term BF who looked like a metal chicks wet dream and he was in a band and the girls we ruthless to me because I looked more grunge or just regular I guess. Women can be just as bad but I don't understand where gatekeeping music comes from.

      I just have to tell you I had the baddest Mastodon tee eveerrrrr. I got weird looks but never questioned. I used to wear Metallica tees to school all the time and I did not appear to be a metal head even though I was. Nobody asked me about it except to talk about music. I wonder if perhaps the issue was with your boyfriend and the type of person you were hanging around. I hope you didn't give up on metal completely 💗 and I challenge you to wear a metal tee you love and rock it out with confidence and see that you can be metal AF if you want to be. And you can be feminine or whatever the next day and a hippie the day after that. If you love the music, wear the tee!! 🎸

    I almost only wear band tees/jackets/hoodies because I feel really comfortable in it (mainly Metallica, Maiden, zeppelin etc because those are truly my favourite band, as “basic” as it might be and they’re the easiest to find where I live ) but I’ve actually never had a single person accuse me of being a poser or anything like that. If someone comments on them, it’s always just like “hey cool shirt!” Or throwing up the devil horns. Maybe I just look the part? (Though my profile picture would beg to differ)

Just because I'm not the BIGGEST fan, doesn't mean I'm not allowed to listen to it. Also, random, but here is a random metal band you might like, you should listen to Gojira. They are AMAZING!!

    The quizzing is definitely a problem, and I used to not put that together. I don't know why. I look back on times I've been quizzed and wish too that I had answered differently. I was wearing an Acid Bath shirt at a party and some guys were like "So you like Acid Bath huh? Well what year did Audie die?" and I just cheerfully told them, because I knew the answer. I didn't really put it together that all of that was just because I was a GIRL wearing an Acid Bath shirt and they wanted to poser check me.
    I also think about how I was wearing an EyeHateGod shirt once in college and these boys stopped me and started questioning if I really hate god. I was like "... it's a band." But I can't help but think they wouldn't have stopped and interrogated a boy wearing the same shirt.
    However I'm glad to say that most of the time, these days, people do take me seriously, and for that, I am grateful. But I hope I do keep in mind how I need to react if this happens again.
    EDIT: Oh yeah, of course it is also a problem in the "Geek" world - video games, anime, cosplay, etc. the boys be like "oh so you like ___ anime huh? Well who's your favorite character huh?"

    The only reason people get curious and whiny about this is because we typically as humans only wear clothing that is representative of us, our beliefs, etc.....example: The "Its just a shirt" thing wouldn't work if someone was wearing a shirt with a swastika and said "Oh I had no clue it meant that" or "I know it means this but I just think the design is pretty and its just a shirt." So when people who are heavily into a certain scene or subculture see that becoming popular in fashion it can be frustrating to some as you're portraying the image that you do listening to that band and do in fact enjoy it.I see your perspective too, but I thought you'd enjoy hearing someone elses take on this :)Btw, you're skin is so beautiful!

I replied saying I love MCR, and she insisted on listing songs other than Helena or Welcome To The Black Parade. I know that I wasn't obligated to do so, but my petty side took over, and I listed like 20 songs I listen to by them, half of which she didn't even know herself. Then I told her to fuck off and to not tell me I don't know who my idols are. 😊

  • @anon4486

    People tend to wear band tees/ any fandom tees to show they're a fan of something and to express their interests and who they are. That's just the reasoning behind the majority of metalheads wearing band tees and you show this by stating that you like Korn and that's why you're wearing the shirt!
    It's hard to explain but as a metalhead I feel a little offended when people wear band shirts and don't like the band as petty as that sounds. I think the reason why is because metal itself was and still is seen as being unpleasant by the majority. If someone shits on something you love but then pretends they like it to 'look bad ass' it's kinda just offensive idk ??? Surely some people feel the same way?
    It's not so much the people who don't 'know' the bands but like the shirt design. It's more the fact that most of them are people who actually DISLIKE metal-
    SORRY FOR GOING ON A RANT IM JUST TRYING TO ORGANISE MY THOUGHTS INTO A RESPONSE BECAUSE THIS SHOULDNT UPSET ME BUT IT DOES AND IM PROBS A SENSITIVE SNOWFLAKE this ain't hating at all I love you and your channel so very much ok ok

  • @dianacuric6017

    In the past band-shirts helped to recognise people who may belong to the same subculture as you do. It gives you a sense of belonging when a stranger smiles at you or greets you because he likes the band on your shirt just as much as you do. (and it's a very easy way to start a conversation btw) This has nothing to do with elitism, it's about a minority trying to stick together. Sarah, i have no doubt that you like the bands on your shirts, but i don't think people are questioning you because of being a woman. It's just that the bands on your shirts are very popular and well-known even in the mainstream folk, so i guess it's not that wrong to ask if you really genuinely enjoy these bands or if you just picked up a shirt from h&m. As a metalhead i'm confused when people who used to laugh at me for looking a certain way, now try to copy this style because it's trendy right now. If i would wear a t-shirt which says: "I love Nutella." and somebody comes up to me and asks me if i really do and i say "No, actually I've never tried Nutella before." you'd be confused too. 😂

      Yeah but there's a difference between wanting to know if someone listens to the band on their shirt, and stopping a complete stranger in the street to quiz them as if you're some holy gatekeeper.
      Also, your nutella comparison isn't really fair. If you wore a shirt that had the nutella logo without liking nutella, I don't think people would be confused. Logos are designs meant to attract attention. There's a difference between a shirt with a logo and a shirt with a plain statement like "I love x". Sarah's shirts are band logos.

    • @saraheerie
      @saraheerie 7 років тому +18

      But here's the thing, it's nobody else's business why you're wearing the clothes you choose to wear. And if another fan wanted to start a convo with me about the band on my shirt, coming up to me and saying "name 3 songs, bet you can't" is not the way to do it. Those people are just being elitist dickheads.
      Personally I could care less if someone is wearing a Marilyn Manson shirt just for the fashion. Am I a huge fan of his? Uh, yeah. Do I give a shit if someone who isn't a fan is wearing his shirt? Uh, no.
      And if you wore a shirt that said "I love nutella" I doubt anyone will give a shit if you actually love nutella or not. I doubt anyone would even comment on your shirt. I have a shirt that says "I love naps" but I don't actually "love naps" and no one has ever questioned me about my choice to wear the shirt... because most, everyday people, don't give a shit.

    The thing with people wearing band shirts is it has become main stream , and the reason we get upset about it is most of us where made fun of for liking this music. And with it being popular to where as a fashion trend is just really annoying because metal is not really just music it's a community. But that being said fuck metal elitists

  • @tijana5616
    @tijana5616 6 років тому +1

    It's really annoying to me that people still expect someone to be a stereotype of a certain music genre just so they could prove they are a "true fan". I've heard many times my metalhead friend say something like "oh god what would other metalheads think if they saw me listening this" while we were listening to pop or some other genre. Honestly, they wouldn't think anything, they don't give a shit, they just enjoy music they like. Music isn't some kind of cult or religion that forbids you from listening other genres. At the end, music is great and beautiful, we should just appreciate it and enjoy it, not accuse each other for being a poser for (not) liking it.

    I‘m gonna be honest, I hate it when people wear band tees of bands they don‘t listen to, especially when it‘s metal or punk (any type of heavier, "alternative" music basically). Maybe that is because the metal/punk/hardrock or whatever you wanna call it to me is so much more than just an aesthetic, it‘s not just a fashion or trend, it‘s a place where I can feel at home. It‘s something I can relate to, and something that actually means something to me. I get pretty pissed when I see, say, Slipknot tees at H&M, knowing that so many are going to buy them without knowing one song of the band. That said I don‘t think anyone has to be a die hard fan of a band in order to wear a band tee and I also think it‘s unfair to make assumptions about someone being a poser, but at least you should know a few of the band‘s songs. Obviously everyone can wear whatever they want but maybe just don‘t be a dick and wear band merch from bands you‘ve never even heard of

    I once had a guy come up to me at a concert in between sets while I was at the barricade ask me what my favourite song by one of the bands was. Since it was loud and I was literally right in front of the speakers that were blasting music I couldn’t hear him so I said idk and he continued to tear a strip off me and try to embarrass me in front of the people around saying I’m “just a fucking poser” and I shouldn’t buy mercy from bands I don’t listen to. Like I’m not a die hard fan of the band but I like their music and I thought the jacket was cool so I got it. He literally went out of his way to come harass me about it too cause he was like dead middle of the pit and I was barricade left and he forced his way over just to quiz me on their music.
