I bought a Sharpmaker from some guy and his wife at a small county fair on N California around 1980 ish. Said his name was Sal. Still got the stones. TRUE STORY.
That’s awesome man.
Really enjoy using this Worksharp system! Plus it’s super portable! I get invited to all kinds of parties now with it!
It would be really helpful to have an update video on this sharpening system. Mostly to know if you still like it, or if it let you down over time.
Magnets work because in each magnet theres a tiny little gremlin that holds the rod in place. Don't forget to thank your gremlin after each sharpening.
Great video man. Just a tip at the end of each stone you should alternate every pass. It will knock the bur off and clean the edge up. You probably already knew that though. Love the channel.
Great video! Thanks for first timing it with us cause you did it, like we ALL would've! I'm sold! Thnx again...
I was nervous for your left thumb! lol
Great video thanks. I think if you leave the covers on the May work as a hand guard. Holding the top can help stabilize it and keeps your hand out of the way. It is fast with diamond stone but the ruff grit is maybe only for if the blade is very dull or damaged. Like the diamond for my CPM 3v steel
IMO the covers on this as a hand guard are a joke. Flimsy with no control. On the other hand the shapmaker cover is excellent as a hand hold not to mention the hand guard rods. On the other hand the Work Sharp stones are far superior. They could be better secured than what the magnets provide
One thing I learned from my sharpmaker is I was pulling the knife away too soon on the down stroke so the back end of the blade wasn't getting as sharp. Now, I concentrate on moving the knife down before pulling and my blades are more consistent along the edge.
4:25 All I could think was HEY NOW YOU’RE AN ALL STAR 😂
Your a brave man first use of a new sharpener thanks man
The Cedric & Ada review of this made an excellent point. This system is great, however the flat stones mean it isn't great for recurve blades. If you have blades with pronounced recurve the triangular stones of the Sharpmaker would be a better choice, and its a little better with serrated blades than this system (which only offers a small ceramic stone for serrations).
If you don't have any recurve blades, however, he recommended this one, both for its lower price and because it can sharpen at more angles (15/17.5/20/22.5/25).
Man Slicy, I don't know if it was just the camera angle but I was kinda worried about your thumb. Glad you made it through intact!
It kinda reminds me of the spyderco sharpmaker but with the v sharpener style or whatever flipped upside down
I have been looking at this, I have a lot of sharpening options, but each blade is different. I usually don’t like a factory edge (even Spyderco) I tend to reprofile right away. Cool vid.
To what angle?
Mick Keim depending on the blade stock, 20-17 degrees.
Great video I usually use the kme system but I ordered that system just to check it out I would tape off the sides of the blade diamond stones scratch like crazy
Brian you have saved me by doing this video, I am getting one of these real soon! 👍🏻
I have both a Sharpmaker and this worksharp and I use them together. They are a great combo in addition to a strop.
Looks pretty easy to use! I was concerned about magnets keeping it in place but looks like it works pretty well! Thanks for sharing!!!
Funny thing is, I find that I can get a blade pretty sharp on the WS sharpener but, I'll finish off with the Sharp maker to give my blade, a hair "popping" finish which I can't do on the Worksharp... Starting a dull blade on the Work sharp for me works better, then, finishing it on the sharp maker gets it the edge, just how I like it! Hmmm...
Mr. Dicey. At the first of your video you state it has three angles. The 15, 20, and 25. It also has angles of 17.5 and 22.5. So it can cover all needed angles from 15 to 25. I have the KME system, and the Sharpmaker. I like this better than the Sharpmaker do to having more angles and three stones instead of the two that come with the Sharpmaker. This 5 angle system is the main selling point. No you cannot get a mirror edge, but as a regular system goes it does very well. I have had mine for about a month. It will replace my Sharpmaker, but obviously not my KME.
Definitely recommend a disclaimer for hand position. Great video glad it didn't turn into a slasher flick
Was camera angles. I was never close to my hands.
Copy that looks like nice sharpener
My favorite band is The Rotating Stones.
Their last album sucked. Too derivative.
Good review! I'm really trying to decide between this and the Sharpmaker. This seems like a great value for the money.
holy crap i didnt know about the eraser idea till you said so and so i tried it and it works great just have to put good presser on it and rub clean
Hey Bryan, it’s been a bit now, just curious which sharpening system you use the most. The Angle set or the Precision Adjust or even the Spyderco Sharpmaker? I totally suck at sharpening so I’d like so advice on what’s best for an idiot like me. Thanks!
Nice man i been using the sharpmaker for a few years nice and easy might looking to this
I got an add from worksharp for this sharpener while watching this
Hey... I use a sticky lint roller to clean my ceramic stones. It pulls the metal off.. you can see it on the tape. Instant gratification.
Bite the bullet and get a Wicked Edge. Excellent sharpener! And I gave away all of my other sharpeners I purchased over the past 30 years after getting the Wicked Edge.
This is by no means my only sharpening system. It is a review.
And than you would buy Profile Sharpening System (made in Russia), or Kazak (made in Poland) and you will forget Wicked Edge as underperforming apparatus. It's never ending cycles of better to best.
Definitely going to check this out, I need a system instead of having it done
are you able to replace the diamond plates
Anyone else wincing while he leaves his left thumb in the path of the downward stroke?
Was just the camera angle. Was nowhere near close.
Not familiar with the Angle Set types of sharpeners. I use a Lansky system. It feels less clumbsy in my hand. Moving the stones vs moving the knife; those seem to be the top choices. What I will say there is a certain meditative quality to simple, repetitive motion. When I can pair my breath with gliding the stones - usually in a 4:1 ration - I find myself in a relaxing, almost euphoric trance while sharpening a knife. And the weird thing is, the more I love the knife, the more relaxing the meditative state is.
I’ve purchased so many sharpers and then I finally bought a Wicked Edge. The Wicked is awesome and that is what I use all the time. I would have save so much money if I simply purchased it in the beginning.
First reaction: I don't like that you are drawing the blade down toward your hand and that there aren't any guards for your hand. Sharpmaker does have guards
A nice informative video. How the hell are there dislikes already on it? Trolls are everywhere apparently.
Just purchased one because of your review! Any benefit to this over the electric base model that runs 70$ ? Anyone?
Gonna try the eraser trick on spyderco gauntlet ceramic rods
The blade seems to get really close to your left thumb.
Could the covers be used as a handle for safety like the Spyderco Sharpmaker?
Great video! Thanks!
Hey Brian, Awesome set up for only 50.00 that's pretty good.
John West if you haven’t tried out a Lansky controlled angle sharpener I highly recommend for under 50$
Awesome thanks ilk look into it
Maybe the angle of your camera but it sure doesn't look like you are vertical.
KME master race...
Sharpmaker seems better quality and easier to use!
Thank you for the video. Can you do an update. Interested to know if you still use this. If not why. 👍
Didn’t get a notification for this Brian so sorry so late. The diamonds sound pretty agressive which means they should work well. The base seems a little wobbly/ unstable so do you think it better to hold it. Honestly it looks like you/ whoever probably should. Looks good though but what do you think! Do you recommend it. Probably a little premature to ask beings that you just got it. I use wet stones to sharpen but thought about using some other alternatives that might be a little quicker but will give good results. Thanks for the review. Till next time.
I’ve used it a couple of times since and really like it. For $50, you can’t do much better.
Heretical i know but on my turnbox i stroke both up and down to keep constant contact and pressure.
At the cost of a lot of my knives...I have to go with a guided system out of respect for the craft. I bought a Lansky years ago...there are better systems now (that cost a LOT!), but the Lansky is inexpensive and they have added tons of stones...I have them all...and have the base which I screwed into a piece of hardwood. I use a big spring clip to attach it to my coffee table and I can hone my blades on a guided system AND watch the game! ( YES..I am single. LOL!)...I can put a damn good edge on with that when the blade is past just stropping....a KME or a Wicked Edge would be nice....
The new worksharp precision adjust looks like it's finally gonna beat that lansky.
At the start of this vid was a commercial for this sharpening system I know you don't control what commercials play so UA-cam(google) knows all 😳😬😳
Ah the Joy's of youtube premium haven't seen a commercial in 2 years
You (the viewer) actually do sort of control what commercials you see. They base what ads they play based on your viewership and search engine history.
I'm very curious how S90V will sharpen on it. I just got one S90V blade and Spyderco Sharpmaker ceramics couldn't do anything to it.
It would do just fine. Diamond is going to have no issues abrading the carbide in S90V.
I added the diamond rods and the ultra fine rods for the sharpmaker, I ran my S110v Para 3 through all four stones last weekend and it's wicked sharp.
KME was my wife’s idea, and now she has sharp kitchen knives.
Again... just the angle. It was several inches away. This is why I don’t do sharpening videos.
Ohhhhh yeahhhhh!!!!
I dig it, but I don't know if it would be worth replacing my sharp maker. The camera angle did make it look kinda wonky but anyone who has sharpened on a similar system should get the jist of it. XHP can be a tad chippy from my experience with it, but near ar chippy as s30v.
not sure but compared to others, this one looks very wobbly, not good
Your thumb!!! Lol!, I thought it was a goner
Same!
You got me worried with those passes on the right blade face going right towards your thumb
I agree was waiting for a disaster
Wasn’t nearly as close as the camera angle made it look.
Slicey Dicey okay 😂 I didn’t figure you would be that wreck less but try holding in the middle of the A frame sharpener (:
The burr is giving you some trouble
Fantastic review♥️
Yeah.... I'm going to hard pass on this one. This has to be one of Worksharps poorest product executions. There are far too many moving parts. It's unstable and as you called it, "there are no positive clicks to let you know it's set at the exact angle."
So a knockoff sharpmaker by worksharp
No. It's operation is significantly different.
Slicey Dicey lol saw it was a rod system and assumed it was basically the same didn’t really look in to it much it is pretty identical in how you use it
Magnets 🧲 Yo
Not bad 👍👍👍
the spyderco sharpener has brass bars to protect your fingers... I was really concerned about your safety watching this
Nice I just dropped 600 stones on a wicked edge pro system if you need any knives sharpened hit me up 😂
you can practice on Mine? lol
Maybe lol gotta test on mine and see how it goes
Get your thum out of the way
