I have always sharpened knives by hand following the simple instructions of; "Slide the blade across the stone like you are trying to slice a thin slice off an apple. Repeat on both side and use plenty of oil." Been doing it since the 70s, I hold the stone in left hand and knife in other and sharpen that way because the instructions didn't say hold the stone on a table. So I've been sharpening knives wrong to razor sharp for over 50 years. I mostly sharpen knives for working, scalpels are only taken to 800 grit at most with a light strop, butcher edges are the same, they want to cut meat with a toothy edge.
I used to do time/passes but checking for a burr every so often seems to work better for me. Then you just lop the burr off and go until you get another burr on the other side and move to the next grit. When you are on the last one, you just don't develop the second burr on the last grit.
Just pre-ordered on Blade hq for my son for his bday! To go along with his 940 for Christmas. He's going to be very happy next month!
That’s awesome! Did he get it yet?
Great product for us amateurs l received it today in Australia and sharpend my first expensive kitchen knife and its like new again👌
Sawing back and forth in the same area is going to leave different thicknesses in the blade unless you do the same amount of back and forth strokes every time you move. You will end up with a wavy edge. Just to be technical. Will you have a sharp knife when you are done? Of course.
Got mine today and put a really nice edge on my Bugout. This sharpener is so easy to use especially for a beginner like me to sharpening. Excellent sharpener for the price.
When all the upgrades are available it will be a truly complete system....it already produces excellent results.
Looks good. Really like the angle adjustment. Much easier and more accurate than any other system.
Was wondering about this sharpener. Thanks for filling us in. If I didn't already have my KME and a zillion stones and add-ons I'd get one. Looks like it was well designed and does some things that other higher end systems don't quite as well!
It is an excellent system, best in class for price range. Rumor has it that a universal stone holder in 4x1 format is coming, if that occurs it makes the kme a non factor
Just picked one up at Sharpening Supply. In stock and 50 bucks. 2 days and it was at my doorstep.
Would you recommend this or the Lansky sharpening system?
My Non-Existent Girlfriend: Why did you buy ANOTHER knife sharpener?
Me: Papa SliceyDicey told me that I NEEDED it!
Knife guys got no disposable income for a girlfriend 😂😂
Hahahah...
@@brentjacobs7083 Which is why my wife lets me be a knife guy... :)
Best!
@@tkindschi Same. I wanted her to talk me out of buying a second Sebenza in a week and she said "You should get it! You have wanted a moon landing one"
I bought the spyderco sharp maker a few years ago - don't know how much I really like it. This seems like it would control the angle better. Has anyone used both? Is there a logical reason to try invest in this Workshap even tho I have the spyderco? Thanks in advance.
Hands down the best sharpening system for the money
I used to sharpen on a worksharp Ken Onion edition. However, I picked up an Edge Pro professional at an 80% discount a couple of months ago. Very satisfied with it
how did you acquire such a discount? haha would like to know
@@jessebennett7163 they had opened this box as a display model, never used though. So they had it on their website and every hour it didn't sell they lowered the price by a few euro's
I have been happy with the job mine does. I have had trouble with the stone rolling and leavening lines in the edge.
LOL “...a beginner knife enthusiast...” as Bryan sharpens a $425 Hinderer. LMFAO
Lol! I was thinking the same thing. First time on M390 on an XM18 lol
Cool seeing someone with a clutch profile pic.
@@BRB_Covers Thank you sir.
I have been worried as I just ordered one I carry a giant mouse ace biblio with m390 and was worried it wasnt going to well after seeing this I ain't worried.... like you said he put a $425 hinderer on it I think I'm good
The fact that some people who buy $1000 knives look down on the lowly $425 knife as "beginner level" is unfortunately a thing.
A week after buying the Spyderco "V shaped thing", (which seems a little bizarre and uncontrolled), I saw your reveal of this sharpener, and smacked myself on the forehead. THIS is what I need...but didn't want to spend the $200+ on KME/Wicked Edge/whatever. Just something to put an edge on, or fix a ding. Mine should be shipped from Amazon next week(?) $50. What a deal.
BTW, $49.95 seems to be the going price. Besides Amazon, Blade HQ has them "Coming Soon" at the same price.
Same thing happened to me. I bought the Spyderco sharp maker about a month ago, even sprung for diamond and extra fine rods, and I’ve had a hell of a time getting a consistent edge with it. Wish I would have waited. I’m still going to buy this, but kicking myself for spending all that money on the Spyderco.
I knew my procrastination would pay off! I’m not great with a handheld sharpener but this would definitely help. Now I just have to find it in stock.
Looks like you can get direct through worksharp listed as in stock. 70 bucks with shipping though. Other guys taking preorders with 2-4 week delay on shipping. 50-60 with shipping
Tnx Bryan, I will def get this kit. I was nervous about trying to sharpen on my own. This isn’t as intimidating as some other stuff out there. I will practice with my budget knives before moving on to my nice stuff. Thank you !!
Now they make one after I done got a wicked edge.
Fucking brutal, dude... ive been holding off for years.
Its ok. WE is better quality. Obviously you pay for what you get
Have a Wicked Edge Go and I love it. IMHO they are the best, but pricey. I will be ordering this to check it out and carry in my truck. $60 is doable...if I don't like it I'll gift it to my grandson.
This is a great system for the money. You did not make a mistake by buying the WE. It’s the best system on the market.
@@everydaybladesinc thank you and yes iv been really pleased with every knife to come off the we, scary sharp!
👍👍👍👍👍👍 nice job. Great system..
I got this a week ago after seeing your livestream where you announced it. Used it on a few knives. I have several of the “under $100” systems and this blows everything out of the water. Super easy to use and consistent.
I’ve got a Lansky system on the way from Blade HQ. Couldn’t get the new Worksharp but for the price you can’t beat the Lansky, especially with the $10 stand.
Just what I've been looking for. Thanks for taking the time to demonstrate. I learned a lot thanks to you Bryan!
I received mine yesterday and i absolutely love it. Its so easy to use and damn i thought my knives were sharp let me tell you they were dull. I started with my tuff lite sharpened up very easy. Then did my qsp penguin in d2 and damn turned it into a real slicer.
Do you remember what angle you used for the penguin?
I’m interested in how the stones hold up/quality and how much they are to replace.
Looks like stones are about 7-8 bucks each through the manufacturer. Hoping for more choices In the future
@@Corbs627 I’ve been looking and couldn’t find anything. Thanks for the info!
For the price they will hold up fine. The replacements will be cheap
I just ordered this and all I'm seeing is great reviews. I'm no pro at all but this looks easy to use. Just wondering how it's going to work on my Benchmade Infidel
People that can’t afford a KME: How do I consistently sharpen my knives?
Bryan: This is the way.
This is the way.
This is the way.
Sliced Dicey: ‘I have spoken’.
So the question is...what do they recommend for the longest knife blade this will sharpen? For example, KME’s recommendation is 6”. Tha kinda sucks is you want to sharpen some larger kitchen or hunting knives.
That I do not know.
@@SliceyDicey...I imagine it’s a little like the KME. But thanks anyways.
I just ordered mine I'm so excited
I had no idea that these were even a thing...... I watch nutnfancy use an edge pro similar to this.....it's very expensive.....but my collection keeps getting bigger and with better knives so it may actually be time to invest in a excellent sharpening system. I definitely want to get one of these though in the meantime.......if I upgrade I can always gift it to somebody who is starting out themselves. Thank you for putting this up man. I appreciate the heck out of it.
I have the Wicked Edge. If I did not already have it, I could buy 8 of these for what the wicked edge cost. The only thing is it should clamp to a table..
Been using a lansky but the clamp stinks, the angle setup is crappy, and the rods can bend and mess up the angles even more if you don't notice at first. I think this will be a good upgrade. Can't justify a KME or Wicked Edge at the moment.
Mine is coming wensday. Need to learn about stromping next so give us a video on that with what compound to get and all that cause I’m clueless!! Thanks
Just preordered one from blade hq. seems like it be good for beginners.
I've sharpened two knives on mine so far. It is easier than my KME unless I want to reprofile an edge.
Why is it hard to reprofile with this? Grit not course enough?
@@faethe000 Correct. Worksharp may make a coarser set as an accessory in the future.
I just put a 15 degree edge in my civivi praxis and it did very well but it is what 9cr.
Where do I buy it from guys
Any idea when WMK will stock these?
Yep. They have confirmed they will be making more stone options for it.
Someone asked if they plan on making more grit options on insta and they said "Well, we'd be a fool not to."
I ordered one over a week ago and expected delivery is between 11/27 and 12/10. Driving me nuts waiting for it!! By the time I get it I'll have to send a couple to Jarod. Lol.
I was literally looking for these online when I got the notification for this upload
Get mine Tuesday! 👍👊
Is it more comfortable to use than the lansky sytem? Thanks for the review!
OK well I'm sold. I just watched the full walkthrough over on their site and I'm in. I've held off committing to one system or the other, weighing the pros and cons and just using my field sharpener in the meantime, but I think this one is finally the right combo of configuration and price for someone at my more casual level of use. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
Just ordered mine for 50 from blade HQ who knows when I will get it though, they are only taking as per orders. Hopefully additional stone choices in the future.
Yep. They have confirmed they will be making more stone options for it.
Someone asked if they plan on making more grit options on insta and they said "Well, we'd be a fool not to."
Got mine yesterday from blade hq and this thing is amazing for the price and what it is
@@edcevo3052 yeah, I got mine too about a month ago. For the price it is incredible.
The last grit and final phase I always use up strokes and feel it helps with better steels. Obviously strop is not upstroke. Anyone else do this technique? I know some systems say not not go back and forth, but up tends to work better for me towards end. Nice review. This is a price point I can finally work with!
Sweet little system! Looks really easy to use, and cuts nicely!
Silly question, maybe? How would you rate a Wicked Edge to this worksharp? The wicked edge i really want isn't in same class as the worksharp, its we120pr2, $699usd.
I have multiple high end fixed angle systems...including a weps 130. Will this replace it....no but for the price you absolutely can't go wrong.
And if the upgrades that are rumored come to fruition....this is going to be a major force in sharpening.....portable, easy to use and best of all inexpensive.
Huh. Back when I got my hapstone, it was just wicked edge and edgepro. Love my hapstone, though. If I'm just matching angles instead of reprofiling, it takes me like 5min to put a screaming edge on S110V, but that's more on the stones than the hapstone itself.
I was under the impression that you should 1) always use water with diamond stones if you don't want to wear them out super fast, and 2) the stone should always go transverse to the edge. I learned from Cliff Stamp's tutorials, so maybe I'm just old school.
I couldn’t find it anywhere so got the Ken Onion edition sharpener.
I've got one on the way. I've been hand sharpening and getting pretty good edges, but looking for more consistency. For 50 bucks it's worth a shot.
Where’d you get yours from?
Really hope they come out with additional stones. I’m a freehander but I’m getting one of these. I’m very good at longer blades freehand, in particular kitchen knives, but on folders I find myself scratching the sides of the blade. Been looking to get a guided system, but not willing to spend kme or edge pro money when I have probably a thousand dollars invested in bench stones.
Just really want them to bring out a 1200 and 3000 diamond and maybe ultra fine ceramic. Live me some high refinement. For now the existing set up and strips will do.
Thank you! Hows the website coming?
Like the looks/price of it. Very KME-ish. That being said for the few knives I have will it do more for me than my 35$ lansky deluxe? Dunno maybe I'll try it out once I wear out the lansky in 10 years.
I love this thank u slicey!!!!!!!!
Yep, need one.
I'm like you in that I prefer the up and down motion rather than the full side sweep. you might also want to put some sharpie on the tip area and check that as well. the thickness of the blade can give you a much larger bevel on the tip even with the identical angle as the body of the blade.
Thanks B
I'm sure there'll be fifty leven videos on this but watching you half ass it on a Hinderer is helpful informative.
Glass Animals - Space Ghost Coast to Coast
Did this just kill the Lansky? I think it’s about the same price right? Could you re-profile steels like d2 or s35?
Can't see why not.
I just reprofiled my civivi praxis but that’s 9cr
Another great video, although I'd watch it either way because you're entertaining. The only advice I could offer is to check for a bur after each side to make sure you are fully apexed before switching sides or switching stones.
Thanks for the review. I preordered one from BladeHQ as soon as I finished watching your video. Gonna give it to my brother for Christmas.
I love it, been getting great edges on some really dull knives👍🏼
I wish this one had been available when I bought the Workshop table top guided system with the pivot. It's good but this one looks better. Thanks for the review
Definitely want to get one. Will be ordered within two weeks for me. Thanks for the review.
Did you back Ben Peterson’s angle finding ruler could be just what u need to go along with any system.
I am surely getting one of those👍🏻.
Really like the look of this one they sold out incredibly fast, I gotta get my hands on one the lanaky system I have is just too limiting on angles seems like any time I need to sharpen I have to do a full regrind 😔
I got one! Pretty great and will ride me over till I can get the KME. Many not even get the KME now
If work sharp comes out with everything rumored for this system such as a longer rod, more tri- stone modules and a universal stone holder....there won't be a need for a kme.
I had compared my kme with this few nights ago....this is much easier to set angles with and I feel the jaws are better than the jaws on the kme....held my para 2 and 3 much much more securely.
And for $49.95 how can you go wrong.
@@fldiverjc4496 I've sharpened a few knives with it and really like it. Nice upgrade from my Lansky diamond deluxe. I could get a mirror edge off it with the ceramic stones. Hoping I can with this when they release more.
@@slo_carry I have no doubts that you will be able to get fantastic results with this.
For me the lansky system takes much longer to get the results you want....I was never crazy about the slip between guide rod and angle slot, nor only having four angles to choose from....it got old really fast when I needed to reprofile blades to fit the lanskys angles.
Not knocking the lansky...they been around forever and have a huge selection of stones....but if you go all in...your spending over $300 and at that price point your playing with some heavy hitters that the lansky can't compete with. Every now and then for nostalgic reasons I will break it out and use....
If Bruce Springsteen had a knife it would be that Micarta Hinderer. It looks so American to me. Cool knife.
I own the $50 combo electric sharpener from WS, as well as two of the field sharpeners, but I should’ve looked at this first, I admit it!
Any idea when they’ll be available again? It says it’s on preorder from BHQ
I seen somewhere available in mid december. Reach out to bhq if they have any info they are usually good and sharing expected dates.
Cool. Was waiting for full reviews on this. Even tho it only has 3 stones, I was wondering if the rod will accept other stone “brackets” from other manufacturers
I believe I read somewhere that they were making different stone grits, unfortunately I don't think other stones fit this system.
Bryan, where did you get this? Every place I’ve looked has been out of stock.
Just got mine in today. This is my favorite in depth review/tutorial. Thanks and cheers 🍻 liked and subbed and I'm greedy when it comes to that 😈⚔️
How about thank you for the review on this!!!!and we're not you like you said everyone is going to be different with the way they use it!!!!as it should be!!!!!!!what i take away is that now I know that for 60 bucks it'll be worth my hard earned money!!!! Thank you Bryan!!!!
Price/setup looks great, need a much finer stone though.
Theyll come out with different grit packages.... they have to.
Sold! I need one. 🔪
Too many moving and adjustable parts that can fail or become off angle. I still would choose my KME. That said the only people that would pay $400+ for a sharpening system to sharpen $600+ knives are the only people that this system being off a degree or 2 is gonna bother. The stones need to be wider though, that was my problem with the lansky systems, more prone to rolling of the tip. Looks like a great budget or beginner option. Plus I can be lazy and sit in my recliner and sharpen my knives holding my KME in hand lol.
Was that an ICP reference lmao
Nice, my video of it drops tomorrow
Good day sir
Great video! I definitely look forward to a stropping video and a knife Enthusiast beginner video!
Great review, I'm going to get one.
I WANT IT NOW! Tired of waiting for this, Benchmade Jade M4 940, green Pacific Salt 2. I have no patience for knife or video game pre orders!
This is like everybody being able to buy a 15000.00 Tesla!
I have a sharpening system, but I don't drag it out into the field with me. I use their Guided Field Sharpener when I'm outdoors. For $50, this thing could live in my truck instead of that one.
Sure make a 20 minute video you summarized in 20 seconds😂 kpl, wiha, this sharpening system, a strop... I’m going to watch, and buy this😁
This is a must have! Does she get mad when you're watching tv and you keep flipping your knife?
How about just making a dull edge sharp again.
24 degrees? No wonder my xm-18 didn't cut worth a darn until I reprofiled it to 17 a side. thats nearly 50 DEGREES INCLUSIVE! I know mine was obtuse...it looked like 45 degrees inclusive at least. So much better now, I carry it every day. But that factory edge, while sharp, was pitiful. My xm-24 though is much better from factory. Still, Hinderers are supposed to be 20-22 degrees per side. 24 is WAY too much. Lower that angle man!
I feel like a 3000 grit ruby stone and a strop will give it a mirror edge.
happy little strokes lol i'm dying here hahahaha
Down to 50 usd atm.
Oh yeah, that's the sound , lol.
After your done with one stone, make sure you beat the devil out of it before using the next.
Cuz you’re Bob “RoBurrt” Ross...
Just found out about this one. And not surprisingly, out of stock
Nice !!
Pretty little strokes, on a pretty little blade. If you make a mistake don’t worry that’s a serrated blade now 😂
@drones r us bob ross reference
Brian, sounds like you haven't watched the DVD lol
