I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for taking the time to do these sharpener reviews. As a knife guy who is newer to sharpening they are immensely helpful, and there is no other resource out there like these reviews. You rock, Pete!
one thing i find pretty cool about this system is once you set your desired angels, the stones actually give a large representation of what your edge should look like, so you can see how wide and stout a 45 degree edge would look vs a 35. pretty elementary, but that visualization is still nice when picking the necessary angle for what the knife is being used for along side its geometry
The most effective way to use these V style sharpeners is to stand above them and look down, makes it a lot easier to keep the blade in a vertical position. When standing horizontally to them its harder to get consistent results.
I searched for a sharpener to use while out and about. First i wanted to get the field sharpener, but i found this one for 5 bucks more. This thing is portable enough but has much more options, great tool. It won’t replace my big sharpeners at home, but to do a quick resharpening in the woods? Great for that.
Agreed. If you can keep your hand and knife consistently vertical using one of these kinds of sharpeners, you _should_ be able to keep your angle consistent on a flat stone. Also, there is a far greater variety of options in standard bench stones compared to these specialized "systems".
I think it is more rewarding as well. I purchased this worksharp and some sharpal stones to see what I'd prefer, I definitely prefer benchstones. The benchstones for me provided a much quicker sharpening and a more even edge than on the worksharp angle set.
@@GOxHAM Yeah I think that sharpening 'systems' with preset angles are a bit of a crutch really, every knife bevel is a little different and it's better to adjust your angle by eye and feel to match it. I'm not a fan of sharpening with a stone flat on a table either, I get much better results if I hold the stone and blade up so I can actually see what I'm doing, and switch hands for either side. I also find it to be much more ergonomic than leaning over and guessing what I'm doing to the edge. See Michael Christy's videos for an example of how good you can get with proper freehand sharpening, though I don't think you need such expensive gear, I can get great results from cheap diamond plates and diamond paste from ebay.
I currently own a spyderco sharpmaker. I see many similarities between the two. This has the advantage of including an even finer stone and more options for what angle you would like your edge to be at. The spyderco has the ability to sharpen more things and is more compact when closed up. Overall very similar sharpening systems that require the user to be in control of the knife and aware of what they are doing in order to create a nice edge.
Hey Pete, I also would very much like to thank you for making this excellently instructional video! It sold me on this product. I'm also new to sharpening and tools like these in my opinion, are a good way to start learning. I'll be referring to your video here quite a bit when my sharpener arrives, like a guide! Thanks again!!!
Great review...and it looks like a great touch up sharpener. I have a KME and really like it. The deluxe kit has everything you need to go from a a re-profile grind to a mirror polish blade. I rarely do the mirror polish just mostly because of the extra time...but it works great when I do.
I have lansky and gatco guided systems. I also have the Spyderco sharpmaker. I have the KME. About a month ago, I saw this and had to have it. It works like the Sharpmaker, but with 5 separate angles vs the 2 offered by the sharpmaker. It also has three grits like the video indicates. While it won't make mirror edges, obviously, I like having the 5 angles. It does a great job of sharpening any knife you have including all kitchen knives, at an affordable price. I can get very sharp edges with it. It's a winner.
I do not know about other Work Sharp sharpening systems, but i do have the GSS system you said you are interested in buying, Pete. I have it for more than a year now, so i have put quite some use to it, as i was experimenting between free hand sharpening and the GSS. It has fairly good quality put into it. However, the diamond plates are made in China and the 600grit one(fine) wears out really fast, even when used in cheap steels and with minimum pressure. Also, the length of the plates does not give much comfort when sharpening and they are quite narrow. The 2 holes where the magnets come in place sometimes catch the tip of knives and the surface arround those holes is a bit different than the rest of the plate. I have no experience with a dmt 600grit plate to be able to compare, but the gss system has failed me completely. This my personal opinion and i hope it will be of help to someone. You can buy a couple of really good stones and practice free hand sharpening with the money you would spend on gss. Plus, the wheight and volume it has makes it a bit inconvenient to take with you if you travel. Pete, if you take the time to read this, i hope it will give you a good idea of what it might be.
I've had one of these about six months, and I love it.I seldom use the high abraive section, don't really need it.One thing-Ive had better results,by not applying pressure on the blade,I just drag it across, with just thaweight of the knife
Nice review! I bought this sharpener and it is great. This sharpener has also an advantage of possibility to sharpen any shaped knife except maybe “hook” shaped knives. Other system that hold blade in a clamp sometimes fail to hold blade well or it is impossible to choose the right holding position when the blade is not square on the back. Also for large knives clamping position can be not optimal in any place. And these scratch marks from clamps might show up sometimes. This system from Work Sharp here is free of these issues.
Windex is the best diamond stone cleaner I've tried, a few drops then quickly rub it in then squeegee it off with your fingers. I started this after I wrecked a couple of stones by not drying them well enough and they rusted, the stones on my work sharp field sharpener actually.
Per Worksharp's email to me a few months ago, the course diamond is 400 grit, fine diamond is 800 grit and ceramic 1000-2000, depending on your pressure. Comparing them to the KME diamonds though, that doesn't line up at all. So I guess each company does their grits totally different. 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Oh come along mate. It is time for a spot of tea. Nice demo. Thanks for posting. Knives need to be sharp so we can be ready for the king brown snakes we have here in Australia.
Yes, get the kme once you can afford it. It is the best sharpener on the market. YES! I had wicked edge before. I still very aggressively believe that the KME is better, even if the WE was less expensive.
Get a wicked edge. Better that you can work both sides of a knife at the sane time. WE also feels way sturdier than KME. Then again personal preference of course.
Looks like a reverse spyderco sharpmaker. I mean Ken onion does cool designs but I think the spyderco offers more utility especially because you can get all the way into the corner towards the handle
Hi Pete, you van see your hand move a bit, thus there is no absolute fixed angle. No problem at all, you create a convex edge that way, with a slightly sharper angle than 17.5
I grabbed one of these even though I'm a KME guy. I just like gadgets. It's a decent system that can do everything sane knife owners would need. And yes I wish it had at least a rudimentary strop. But solidly worth $50
Really appreciated all the information in this video. I received this sharpener recently, tried to follow your technique exactly, but I can’t get it sharp enough to cut paper. My edge has improved and it’s moderately sharp. Honestly I shouldn’t be disappointed with the results for my first attempt, but it’s frustrating to not be able to cut paper. Im doing my very best to hold vertical, and with moderate/light pressure stroke consistently. I’ve gone from coarse to medium to fine multiple times alternating with each stroke to manage the burr. I strop after as well, just can’t achieve the results I want yet. Any advice is appreciated!
These stones need to break in for a short time. I get anything that is made of proper steel shaving sharp. Or maybe you have a bad knife? I have one strange knife that I can sharpen all day long and it is still trash. Some very strange alloy that can be sharpened only on some rotating stones or so. Level the table under it or at least check it to have even bevel.
Hey Pete, I hope things are well with you and the family! Are you going to do a video on the Work Sharp Guided Sharpening System "GSS"? I received one as a gift for Christmas, it's a very interesting system. I do not know of any others like it. I will give you a heads up if you are going to pick one up, the Upgrade Kit is a must. It comes with two diamond stones and most importantly the strop, compound and a few other bits. IMO it's one of the most complete kits on the market for the money. In the States the system is $49.95 and the Upgrade kit is $29.95. Thanks for all of the great content, keep up the great work!
if you have good knives, but only had around $50 (long story) what sharpener would you recommend. I have many fixed blades but also plenty of folders. I just can't afford to waste my money. when you get severely injured in a line of duty, they really screw you. thanks for your help. Blessings.
OK. Glad you mentioned that their was no jig. I learned how to sharpen on oil and later diamond stones. Honestly don't see advantage. Good work explaining it.
I'm only @ 1:56 and I'm liking it... Because you aren't opening it green and fumbling with no practice or experience. Thank you for that! Okay... On with the video... 400 and 800 grit on the diamond stones/rods/plates... Whatever you want to call 'em. I'm laughing so thanks for the corny music 😉
Would this be considered an upgrade from the guided field sharpener or just more of a sidestep? Looking to upgrade the field sharpener (which I still like quite a bit) for a better quality edge without breaking the bank. Thanks.
Would honestly recommend the spyderco sharp maker over this... This has far more options for degrees but being able to use the corners on the spyderco stones is a huge advantage
@@jonathanwatson268 simple deburring works better with the corners of the spyderco stones the the flats at least in my experience. Also the corners are great for serrated knives also the spyderco stones should last allot longer because there ceramic and not diamond coated. They have diamond coated if that's what your into but the ceramic stones will pretty much never wear. I think if this work sharp had actual triangle stones id like it a lot more
I've been using the Spyder sharpmaker for a couple of years now after i just couldn't get super sharp results using stones (i have never been taught properly), i get some super edges from it if you put in the time i can't fault it for my uses, it looks like to be maybe the next level up from this worksharp.
I like it, but, I can already see that its quite easy to tilt the knife and then you aren't doing the angle that you thought you were doing. The Spyderco Sharpmaker is very similar, but this is slicker. The Sharpmaker has the same exact issue, where you can easily tilt the knife into a new angle by accident.
I think I'd try lightly pressing the palm of my support hand on the top of the sharpening mounts (top of the inverted V portion). That would keep your hands out of the way of a missed stroke, and apply even pressure down through to the base.
that system looks like it would be nice to use freehand (eg. hold the folding stones in one hand and sharpen with the other). Also nice G-Shock! I approve :o)
Not that I'm trying to be a smart-ass but have you tried to put the left hand on top to hold the sharpener? With a gentle pressure looks it would be more steady
Little bit more expensive than lansky turn box and way cheaper than Spyderco especially with extra diamond rods than cost more alone than work sharp. I think it's the best and most complete V sharpening system on the market. All work sharp products looks great and well priced. After 20 years of sharpening I prefer free hand sharpening on ceramic rods and I'm using Chinese "apex" only to make totally new cutting edge. Any way I hate the sound of course diamond stones:)
In order to do proper job with this system or Sharpmaker, you have to stand on top of this and look the blade above and control being perpendicular. You can see on the video that you are not stable at all...
I recommended the spyderco sharpmaker to a buddy and he easily got a razor edge almost never having sharpened before, but of course you should know your particular needs best
Nice review, thanks! Just a couple of thoughts.. No way the coarse stone is finer than 200 grit! It feels (and sounds) like somewhere between my 100 and 140 grit KME stone and it raised a burr on my Spyderco Cat in like 6 strokes. I'd only use it for reprofiling or restoring a chipped edge. Second (now this may be the camera angle) but it didn't look like you were holding the Millie anywhere near vertical when touching up the serrations? I have this one, the Sharpmaker and the KME and i feel it's a usable addition. I wouldn't want to have ony one of them to be honest. Cheers!
The coarse is 320 grit - for the first time sharpening at the angle you select, reprofile with the coarse. After that, all you should need is the medium diamond.
for the sake of safety you shouldn’t take those caps/doors off. Then you would find all your non sharpening hand’s fingers quite safe. They stand at 45 degree for a reason.
I got my Benchmade 551 to an almost mirror edge with a lansky basic kit with just a 600 grit normal stone and a leather belt with no compound, could get damn closer to a mirror with a 1000 grit ceramic, and some compound on the belt. (If any one knows good compound to get a mirror edge let me know)
Great video, I've been wondering about this one. On a personal note, I clicked on this video in the hopes of seeing an Onion named Ken being sharpened...I was disappointed.
Um, just want to mention that through the entire sharpening process you had one side set to 20-degrees, and the other side set to 15-degrees. That might have caused any of the problems that you had in the functionality of the sharpening system. Honestly it seems decent. I like how few parts it has, and how compact it seems, but replacing the stones might end up being more expensive than buying a whole new sharpener.... EDIT: I read now that this is an intended feature to include more sharpening angles in the system, but I have to wonder if those additional angles are really worth having, when it would require you rebuilding your knife edge to have the two oddball ones. I think that really leaves my biggest concern being the price of replacing the "stones". Even on the Worksharp website there are no listed replacement parts, nor additional accessories, so you are stuck with the three grit levels you have.
I’m not a rocket scientist but how is the 17.5 degrees setting not a more obtuse angle than the 20 degree if you moved the leg outwards as opposed to inwards?
Save you money if someone bought your stuff and shipped it to you? You give someone in the US $ to buy it and you pay to ship it to you. Many of us would help you out if it saved you some money. There are different USPS International rates. You have some honest people that would assist you FREE.
Please do a SpyderEdge rope cut test with a fresh, fully serrated Spyderco in at least S30V until it will no longer easily cut rope or break down cardboard. Compare the same test against a plain edge in the same steel. I actually had a job with heavy cutting once upon a time, and I found that a soft ass H1 Spyderco Salt 1 was a far superior cutting tool to my plain edge super steels at the time, which would dull in an hour or two. I was able to easily maintain it on my Sharpmaker, as well. Knife enthusiasts severely underestimate serrated edges when cutting abrasives, and you are in the position to showcase that. Help me Pete, you're my only hope. i really want to do this, i do wonder what ‘yardstick’ i would usec as the ‘slice held paper’ often doesnt illustrate even a crazy sharp serrated edge.

After 20 years of sharpening I prefer free hand sharpening on ceramic rods and I'm using Chinese "apex" only to make totally new cutting edge. Any way I hate the sound of course diamond stones:)
Lansky turn box is great to with rods for 20-30 bucks
Damn... That song, when you start sharpening... You've had it in so many videos.
Could anyone help with the name of that song???
Is it 'Final Fantasy IX - Black Mage Village' perhaps? There are a few songs he uses regularly.
@@Dhari1 it is... Thank you!!!
Review the Cold Steel SRK Compact!
In order to do proper job with this system or Sharpmaker, you have to stand on top of this and look the blade above and control being perpendicular. You can see on the video that you are not stable at all...
yeah, i know. its hard to do it all for video though, without getting up and down and adjusting cameras and such. knives got sharp, its all good
My Hero Academy. A decent manga.cheers guy.
I think as a beginer I think I would rather try the Lansky system.
I recommended the spyderco sharpmaker to a buddy and he easily got a razor edge almost never having sharpened before, but of course you should know your particular needs best
are you able to replace the diamond plates?
With the Lansky turnbox I keep constant pressure both up and down, slashing at the sharpener seems crude and inexact.
Although this one is OK, I like their guided bench stone (with tilting base) much better, specially with upgrade kit.
Did he Jam his tip straight into that stone?
Worksharp needs to make something like the KME or wiked edge but for much less then everybody could afford to sharpen like a pro 😎
It doesn’t look like you are using much pressure?
I like the cut of your anime jib
La punta queda bien afilada?
Is the edge Pro Apex still any good?
Spyderco sharpmaker has worked well for me this is definitely interesting but I see some drawbacks
My favorite part was your shirt. I don't even know really why I'm watching this.
GREAT Vid 🔥🔥
What was the blue handled knife?
for the sake of safety you shouldn’t take those caps/doors off.
(If any one knows good compound to get a mirror edge let me know)
When is a budget knife video coming? Would like to see something under 30 compared to something 150+
Sensei132 blade hq has tons of vids on that. As does like 100 other people
Great video, I've been wondering about this one. On a personal note, I clicked on this video in the hopes of seeing an Onion named Ken being sharpened...I was disappointed.
Ken Onion is very sharp.
Uncle Randy approved?
For those of you that don't know, it is a 30-degree angle that last the longest while still very sharp! Have a happy sharpening day!
Personally I like the sharp maker better, just preference
This system seems very flimsy I don’t think it would last long. Thank You for the video.
7 Boss theme for the AUS 8?
Great, practical info. Going to suggest less music. It’s distracting.
Little known fact: Pete sharpens light sabers for Jedi masters
I’m not a rocket scientist but how is the 17.5 degrees setting not a more obtuse angle than the 20 degree if you moved the leg outwards as opposed to inwards?
He put it in the 20 and 15° slots which average to 17.5°
EDC elephant you’re right. I must of tuned out when he said the two most interior slots were set at fifteen degrees.
In Oz 9 = 10?
Was that an electro version of GREENSLEEVES? ;p
Save you money if someone bought your stuff and shipped it to you? You give someone in the US $ to buy it and you pay to ship it to you. Many of us would help you out if it saved you some money. There are different USPS International rates. You have some honest people that would assist you FREE.
John Shuttleworth Soundtrack. A jolly decent sharpener too.
When you just can't find the perfect river rock.
Awesome shirt! Are you up to date?
Hey brother, l love your vids..but music while you are talking is little annoying.
I hated this sharpener... Returned it after 1 day
Prefer the Field Sharpener.
Interesting
You seem like such a talented chap.. plugged in.. With very low aspirations.. Still, I use your information - danke
Help me Pete, you're my only hope.

i really want to do this, i do wonder what ‘yardstick’ i would usec as the ‘slice held paper’ often doesnt illustrate even a crazy sharp serrated edge.
schmutz! As we say here in NYC
i just imagine ken is a guy who always carry and eat raw onions to fuck with people
The music is really distracting from trying to hear your advice
