I spent four days on Mt. Athos in 1988 and it was spectacular. It was the closest I've ever come to feeling like I'd walked through a time portal. You had to apply for a permit (in Thessolaniki) to go out there and I was even interviewed and asked why I wanted to visit Mt. Athos because at the time it wasn't really open to tourists and was primarily for Greek men going there for religious reasons. I basically told them that I was traveling around the world to expose myself to different cultures. It took 2-3 weeks to get the permit so I went to Turkey in the interim. You have to down to the nearest town outside the Athos area and then catch a boat halfway down the peninsula and a bus up to the central "town" of Karyes where they stamp your permit. From there you walked from monastery to monastery and they housed and fed you wherever you went. If I remember right, the 4-day permit cost about $12 US at the time and I could have extended it an additional 4 days while I was out there for no additional cost. If you ever are in the area again, I highly recommend going out there. Of course, some things may have changed since it's over 30 years ago that I was there but I'm sure the feeling of the place hasn't changed.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos It was truly amazing. There was very little electricity (usually only in the areas where visitors stayed although a couple times there was no electricity and I was given a kerosene lantern to take to my room), only one telephone at each monastery in case of emergencies, the roads were little more than rutted tracks, you ate your meals with the monks to the sound of a monk up front who was chanting scripture (in Greek, of course) and you were free to observe their religious services. The monks' days are basically split into three 8-hour sections: 8 hours of work (gardening, building things, repair work, what have you), 8 hours of sleep and 8 hours of prayer and services. One memory that is still crystal-clear in my mind (after 30 years) is sitting at a long solid one-foot deep marble table in the dining hall of Simonopetra monastery and noticing that there was an inch deep depression in the marble at each place where people sat from them placing the metal plates there for centuries upon centuries. Yeah, you would absolutely love the place.
