New Rule: if you come right out the gate with a response in Spanish, it's also fair game to allow a moderator to ask you a question in Spanish WITHOUT restating it in English.
Nikki Medearis what about ,and I might be asking for a lot here, a 100% of the debate in english with Spanish subtitles?
I wonder if that would work.

Beto has way better Spanish than Booker!
akdjas real estuve pensando eso durante todo el video. El español de Beto estuvo bastante bien, Booker lo unico que hizo fue pronunciar fuerte las erres pero fue muy cringe (?
Yeah, I totally agree.
Agreed
they were saying on the view that Beto is fluent just not a good accent and booker has a good accent so he sounds better. Interesting to hear that confirmed since I have no clue what either is saying and can't judge on my own. Thank you! :)
Beto spoke a different dialect. Different inflections, different word usage, different idioms. Yes, Cory had the pronunciation down as well as the speed. Beto was also correct, but with the Spanish you'd find in Jersey City.

I live in Canada and bilingual (French/English) delivery in debates is the norm. All government leaders are expected to speak both languages. I thought it was pretty cool for O'Rourke to speak Spanish.

Me, too. I speak Portuguese. I picked up Spanish in the states.
Beto's Spanish sounded fine...he was perfectly understandable.
Yeah he spoke like he actually knew Spanish, even though people might hate on his accent--that's actually what's great about Spanish that you can sound legit even though you don't have a perfect native accent. In fact accents and dialects vary a ton in Spanish but the language is the same and pronounced mostly the same everywhere which makes communication a lot more fluid.
All of them sounded like they learned Spanish yesterday, because they probably did.
It sounded fine, I’ve heard people speak way worse Spanish
Definitely... it's clearly only a preconception that native english speakers cannot possibly speak multiple languages and only "new" Americans can be multilingual in the USA. And about accents... you should hear the way we speak english in mainland Europe ;-)
I beg to differ. Immigrants from any country should be given a test in 6 months and if they can’t order a Papa John’s pizza delivery over the phone, send them back. And because British people are expected to be semi-american, if they can’t loose that god damned british accent, send them back too. As a matter of fact, when I was in Thailand a few days ago, I said, take me to my hotel and offered 60 baht. He acted like he couldn’t understand english. Colbert gets the supreme dumbass award for this one, seeing as how Beto is more fluent in Spanish than Julian Castro. I understand you have to write jokes quickly, but take 10 seconds to google the damn candidate
Folks you do realize you are watching a comic do comedy right?
It still has to be satirical or have truth in it; especially for a comic like Colbert whose ENTIRE persona and purpose is using comedy as a way to champion truth. So you can't be dismissive by saying, "It's only a joke." It's not the purpose of HIS jokes. So it was surprising for him to make two "jokes" at O'Rourke's expense that were utterly false on the face of it - and would possibly mislead millions of people who don't know O'Rourke at all.
The point is not about who speaks Spanish correctly.

“Tulsi and Tim, don’t fight; neither of you is going to be president.” I guess the writers at LSSC forgot how dead wrong they were about the 2016 election. The bias on this show for particular candidates is really aggravating.
Fr
Personally, I don’t take the Late Show’s opinions (if you can call them that since they’re just jokes playing off the synthesis of the social psyche) seriously. At the moment, there is barely any support for Tulsi compared to the front runners. A joke digging into that perspective is perfectly reasonable and amusing, even if it may turn out untrue. The show’s bias is only reflective of the opinion of the crowd, and most people don’t see Tulsi as a viable candidate at the moment. It’s not practical and certainly not humorous to view every candidate as a potential winner. 2016 wasn’t normal and should never be treated as such. Just because a crazy underdog made it through the slip gates doesn’t mean it will happen next time. There is a perspective that the late shows should be accountable for shaping public opinion, and so should not favor any candidates, but the problem isn’t with the shows, but the people who view them as legitimate news sources.
@@CharlieQuartz they're not responsible but de facto they do shape opinion and it is unbecoming to deride people's campaigns despite the facts (ie that 40% of viewers thought gabbard was the strongest in the debate). If they talked positively of gabbard and set her up better, then the same audience would have a positive response to her, but they don't do it cause they are playing political games, which is the problem with the dnc and American voting in general.
Trump shows us that an underdog CAN win, and that should give us hope for a brighter future where we have candidates with higher potentials, candidates that actually represent the values of their constituents and the nation at large. I expect the president to do the right thing, not the political thing, and gabbard is a step in the right direction so we should be taking her and others more seriously otherwise we will end up with another political puppet like every other potus.
This just shows how the media machine is working together to manipulate opinion and shape our politics, and it is unsightly to say the least.
Corporate approved comedy.
Patricio Ansaldi I agree that the Late Show failed in underestimating the excitement people had about Tulsi after the debate (which I sympathize with), and that celebrating her success on this stage could have made for an entertaining part of the monologue.
I must disagree, though, that the media institutions are working together to alter public perception. I suspect it’s merely the effect of hundreds of writers expressing their own biases and those of the crowd to appeal to their audience. Shows will talk about the candidates that they think most people will like hearing about (whether positively or negatively). It’s like how the MSM talks about Trump. There probably isn’t some conspiracy set up by all the news organizations to talk about him only negatively and shape public opinion, but showing a negative perspective is what each of them thinks their audience wants to see. It’s also easy.
I like Colbert. He's certainly a great entertainer, but you've got to wonder why he goes out of his way to undermine Tulsi. She's brilliant, poised, eloquent, a war veteran, etc. His comments against her just makes me more interested in hearing what she has got to offer.

It kind of sucks, I really like Tulsi Gabbard. A veteran who is a bit more middle of the road, who has a voting record that perfectly matches her stated positions.
She's a progressive, and an anti-war one to boot. CBS corporate sponsors won't like that.
Let's not forget her OFF act to get us off oil, or her legislation to create an audit system to secure our elections and find out if there was any foul play by the investigation of the people themselves.
So frustrating to see the treatment she gets from Colbert. I remember when she went on for an interview, you would have never known Colbert was a comedian. Really makes you wonder how much anti war candidates get deliberately attacked/ignored by oligarch-run media. I’ve lost a lot of respect for Colbert with how he’s treated my girl Tulsi.
Shame shame on Colbert for skipping over maybe THE highlight of the evening, when Tulsi did her verbal ninja takedown of Ryan's ENGAGED idea
@@samcartin215 I share your experience with Colbert. I was a huge fan of his until recently and the Tulsi interview was also the nail in the coffin for me. Please look up Pimplegate. It sounds like you are merely wondering about bias. Wonder no more.
Tulsi Gabbard may be an underdog but she is an amazing woman. Would like to see her in more debates. And get rid of those deadweight candidates.
Yes to this
She would be a great Secretary of State or Defense. Her anti-war policies are golden
smu72 totally agreed. Love Tulsi, Elizabeth, can’t wait to see Mayor Pete.
She didn’t answer the women equal pay question.
But she’s qualified for Sec of State.
The one thing I agree with was when Castro said in 2021 we'll be saying "adios" to Donald Trump... the best part of the entire debate. I pray he's right.

Kudos for Beto for speaking a bit of Spanish ... CC folks need to be ready with English translation AND GET CLIMATE CRISIS INTO THE DEBATES!!!
Boring? That's what I would expect a schoolyard bully to say. He who knows nothing about policies and issues would be bored.
Billy Hunter : yes, it was so childish. The little boy left out of the game and not understanding the rules, kicks sand and says loudly : it’s boring and it’s a dumb game anyway !

Why was Elizabeth Warren relegated to the kid's table?
She should have been in the real debate, not the warm up act.
Probably cause it could make her look better
I kinda liked this. She shown bright, Harris shown bright. It'll be like a bracket fight, and hopefully we can end up with a Warren/Harris ticket.
They said the placement was selected randomly. It honestly might be better for her that she was, since she really got to stand out against... well basically everyone in her debate. Plus, if she'd been on night two, too, what would the point of night one be?
As far as I know, it was just luck of the draw but it helped her stand out and anyway, it isn't over yet by a long shot.

Actually thought Warren, Castro, Gabbard and Castro and Inslee had pretty strong performances, and are making me look more into their policies and more. But truth is..any of them would be better than trump.
Beto's Spanish wasnt that bad. And Colbert's Tulsi-bashing continues 😒
Colbert is going to get Trump re-elected.
Dont need Trump to go into more war, just look at many other current top GOPs n DEMs.
He seems to really like Kamala Harris.
It is supposed to be funny ya know? His real purpose is to entertain. Colbert’s not a full time political pendant (pundant? Pendent? I’m at a loss here) he’s just helping people get a little bit more involved in politics. Just a weeeee bit.
I'm a white boy from El Paso, too, and yeah his spanish was terrible. My pronunciation is better and i don't speak spanish

I had already prepared THE comment about that, but you saved Stephen from my rage.
Tulsi gabbard julian castro and corey booker clearly won the first debate they are all refreshing apart of the new generation for americans and had the best moments .gabbard and booker are both fighters who will fight for the will of the americn people while castro stands for human values that we all can relate to with experience in housing infrastructure .they are clearly the future of the democratic party .
I thought Gabbard and Warren were the only good candidates at this debate. I don’t really like Booker’s approach and I don’t know of any positive plans he has that differentiate him from the other candidates. Castro was the mayor of my city for a few years. His twin brother, Joaquin (a US Congressman) is much more intelligent and eloquent than he is. I wouldn’t trust Julian to run a PTA, let alone the country.
I also don’t really care about “the new generation” (I’m in my twenties). An ideal President for all times, I feel, should be in their fifties or sixties. Any younger, they are too naive/hot-headed/inexperienced/immature and much too driven by ill-conceived notions like ideology or the Good. Any older, and they risk being disconnected from the changes in our society and falling to the illnesses of old age.
Tulsi and Elizabeth seemed like the most reasonable, committed people in this debate, though I find it hard to forgive Tulsi for her past anti-LGBTQ, but she has the most impressive foreign policy history of any candidate besides Biden, and that is absolutely necessary for the US right now.
Study Booker's record. Don't trust a word he says.

I don’t want Trump to hear simply, “adios”. I want him to hear, “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in a court of law...”
I don't really disagree, but I would gladly settle for saying adios to Trump in 2020. I know many will say theres no way Trump will win again, but thats what they said last time. The media would have convinced me to bet my life savings that Trump would not win that election. I would have even doubled down saying he wouldnt last the 4 years in office.
Thankfully I didnt find someone to take that bet because I'd probably be eating my gun a year from now.
I'm done buying into any fairytales the leftist media suggest. Trump does/says something stupid. The media bitch about it for a couple days. Trump simply denies whatever it is & proceeds to do something even dumber or crazier so we move on to that. Its a never ending cycle. That man can get away with doing and saying anything. It's funny how he cut Tulsi's "Saudi Arabia is behind Al-Qaeda bit". Tells a lot. :)

I didn’t see the actual debate what’s this about?
@@tairneanaich Tim Ryan was talking about the need to keep troops in Afghanistan because the Taliban is responsible for the attacks on 9/11. Tulsi corrected him because 1) al Qaeda is responsible for the attacks on 9/11, and b) the majority of the terrorists in those attacks came from Saudi Arabia.
The person above is commenting on how Colbert cut Tulsi's line about Saudi Arabia for some reason.
@@candacen7779 And c), she's been in the military and knows her shit.
@Mike well, they were already there. Saudi Arabia and CIA just armed and trained them. Sunni Islam has centuries of 'extremist' history, especially when threatened by foreign powers. It's not like they listen 100%. IS and Al-Qa'eda both are Saudi products, yet they fight each other, like all the rest of us human factions...
It's all one big geopolitical skirmish between Russia and the US and their proxy armies, in countries like Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Israel. A similar thing is happening with China (Vietnam, Japan, the Koreas, etc.). North Korea is to China, what Iran is to Russia (though Islam makes the latter relation a bit different). The odd thing to me is that this never reaches a high level of public awareness. It is in fact sometimes mentioned and even if it is broadcast it get's very little attention - making it less likely to get exposure from the media again. I suppose it's like with Trump... There's not much you can do about it. On top of that it's all quite complicated and interconnected to a bunch of geopolitical organizations, laws, armies, governments, etc. People that grab on to power like madmen, are hardly ever effectively stopped by 'stable geniuses'... You need a combined effort from society, or congress in case of Trump. But that basically only really occurs when shit hits the fan for a majority of the people. I guess US foreign policy is only affected when it hits home, like it did in Vietnam: Growing tired of death with little gain - though you didn't get publicly outraged for getting screwed over in a war that was about China, where napalm, agent orange and cluster bombs were massively deployed. Similar stories for Iraq, Afghanistan, but also Yemen at the moment (fighting Iran proxies, because everyone adapted to that strategy of indirect warfare).
Iran is the enemy, but why is Iran no longer Persia? Why did you support one side in Syria, while Russia sided with Assad? And why did Trump change his mind there, also loves Russia, yet still opposes Iran? How come your politicians blindly support Israel and why was Israel created, based on what plan and who where involved in making the plans. When did this occur and why?
Isn't it odd that Afghanistan was invaded for Saudi crimes from a 'rogue' mountain area in Afghanistan? Or that Iraq was invaded for WMD that didn't exist? Both countries coincidentally surrounding Iran... Or that Iran keeps shooting US drones that fly over or near Iran (like the sentinel in 2011, which initially was claimed to be flying over Afghanistan)? The answer to such questions is often pretty clear if you ignore the narratives and just look at the actions taken over a period of time. The problem in the middle east isn't a problem at all. It's chaos for profit.
Russia now is indeed the product of the USSR bankrupting itself on the US and Saudi led proxy war, or resistance in Afghanistan - mainly by providing them with man-pads in order to close off the airspace to the Soviet forces, which was the beginning of the end. After that the US moved quickly, along with NATO which they basically headed, but now faces a Russia where the strongest thug rose from the ashes. He uses the same strategy of funding, supporting and intervening in politics. Just look at the orange of your President. Greed and pride, I guess. The US keeps creating its own worst enemies.
