When I clicked on this notification, I expected to hear a sad and tragic story of a woman who was horribly mistreated because of something she had no control over during a time when so little (probably nothing) was known about hormonal abnormalities. Instead, we are given a beautiful tale of a resilient woman who used her differences to her advantage and reaped so many rewards for it. I was touched to learn how Anna's father built a special bed for her to feel comfortable in the most private and sacred moments - alone and sleeping. Surely, this gesture of love and compassion set Anna on a course in her life where she continued to seek these things out. Her family loved and accepted her as a person deserving of all the same regard as anyone else and she internalized that message. She knew she was worth the salary that Barnum was paying her (which was a LOT of money and made her a rich woman in the 1850s). She knew her life was worth saving in not one, but two fires, and she survived and helped rescue others. She knew she deserved to feel deep, romantic love and she found it. This story isn't a tragedy, it's an inspiration. What a beautiful human being she was and what a life she lived!

Wonderful video. She sounds like she had a very loving, compassionate family growing up, and that helped create a lovely woman. Hearing about her lost babes is heartbreaking. Perhaps if she lived now, they could have survived. On another note, imagine little Queen Victoria at 4'11" and Anna Bates standing next to each other!
It also sounds like she had a good relationship with her co-workers, as some of them saved her from the fire and she immediately went to help rescue others. Life can’t have been easy for her, but it’s good to know she had friends and family who cared.

I was so excited when I came across this video. Anna had lived in Seville, Ohio, USA, the same town I had lived in for 22 years. When I first moved there, there were parades held for them yearly. Unfortunately, that eventually wore out. Her husband, Martin, was a well known scoundrel owing many people money. He was often thrown into jail for this. The jail still stands by the railroad tracks. I had helped in starting the museum based on them & other local history info. There is even a historical plaque showing that they had lived there & what their contribution had been throughout their lives.
Do you know why he didn't make good on his debts? It sounded like they had a lot of money, I just wondered if he burned through it or if he just didn't want to pay what he owed. I hope he at least treated Anna well. Edit: Well, it sounds like they still had money...

Very interesting. You comment that the circus freak show was cruel, but it allowed people to earn money, support themselves, and hopefully, retire. It’s interesting that these people making a good living in the circus sideshows and gaining self-respect was muddled and ruined by “do-gooders” who thought it ought to be beneath them.
It was considered cruel only by busy-body, hyper-religious do-gooders that thought they knew the score. In modern day, these are the same jerks who are trying to control our bodies.

Excellent video. I heard stories of Anna Swan and Captain Bates as a child growing up. She was a friend of my great-grandmother who lived on a farm in LeRoy Ohio right near Seville. When we went out to visit the farmhouse (still in the family) we heard that when Anna and Captain Bates came to call they arrived in a springboard because there was no closed buggy big enough for them. When they went to the front door and knocked, they were looking in through the fan lights at the top of the door and not through the panes at the side of the door. My great grandfather brought chairs outside because the ceilings were too low in the old farmhouse. My grandfather was just a little boy and he said that he was barely as tall as Captain Bates’s boots.
These people were amazing to carve out an almost normal life in such a difficult time for people who were seen as “different”. Losing 2 children together and for him, a third loss is heartbreaking. Thank you for bringing this story to us.

Hope you two get together. Are there other really tall people in the family? I know three girls myself who are over 6 ft. tall. I come from a tall family as well. Finding shoes is really difficult.
P.T. Barnum was good for her. She met her future husband at the circus and had what appeared to be a good and loving marriage. She seems to have been a good-hearted woman as anyone who looks after animals is not bad. I'm sorry that her children died and she lived only to be 42 years old, but her brief life was very fulfilling. Few people can boast striking up a friendship with a queen and traveling the world back when most people never left their town or city.
Wonderful historical video! I'm in B.C. Canada and have never heard of this lady in my 58 years of life. Not to be dark or anything, but I know about the Halifax Explosion of 1917... but never of such a prominent and respectable woman such as herself and her family.
I'm from Ohio and I had no idea that she lived here. She really was pretty extraordinary for the time. The fact that she negotiated her way into the circus instead of being sold to it is pretty telling. She was smart enough to know her value and she expected it. That's pretty bold for a Victorian woman

Hi!!! I really liked this story of Anna. I would have like to have known her. I'm glad she at least found love in her life. So...sad about her Children. Seville OHIO is about a hour from my town. I hope she is resting well...Great Video!!!...Your fan&friend from USA...🇺🇸🦋
Glad you enjoyed it!
i wonder what happened to the house! i would've loved to see that! happy birthday!
That's what I was thinking too. It must have been a grand place ❤.
I think they tore it down some years after Martin Bates died, thanks for watching!
This story would be a great movie 😊❤
I’d love to see that!
…with Gwendolyn Christie, maybe?
Happy birthday!
I thought her story was great, despite the sad things that happened.

Thank you for this great video. I lived briefly in Seville, Ohio, so knew the story. They did seem to have a happy marriage!
Thank you for the fascinating and very respectful video. I’m glad that most of Anna’s and Martin’s lives were happy. They were very inspiring people.
Glad you enjoyed it :)
She was married to my great-great-great uncle Martin Van Buren Bates.
@@GhostofHistorysPast he is a cousin to me! My 3rd great grandmother was a Potter
Hope you two get together. Are there other really tall people in the family? I know three girls myself who are over 6 ft. tall. I come from a tall family as well. Finding shoes is really difficult.
Oh wow that’s interesting. Are there any other large people in your family?
@@shannsimms9072 not in that line. It wasn’t genetic, he had a brain tumor
@@dorothywillms115you can go to Sweden and they hand make shoes for ppl.
Another lovely video, thank you. Happy birthday 🎉
well put. thank you. you are the best telling these stories. :)
Wonderful video. I love the love story, they sound like a beautiful couple. It was an honor to learn more about them. ❤
Marvellous as always. Happy Belated Birthday 🎂 🥳
A very sympathetically told story. Good to hear that she had a caring family and and loving husband.
Fascinating bittersweet story, both happy and sad times, thanks for sharing~
Thanks for listening :)

Hedy Lamarr I think this woman should be your next video. She’s female Hollywood actress that also co-invented radio guidance system
Will look into her!
Thank you.. i loved it.. you have a lovely accent and tone. Easy to listen to.
Wonderful historical video! I'm in B.C. Canada and have never heard of this lady in my 58 years of life. Not to be dark or anything, but I know about the Halifax Explosion of 1917... but never of such a prominent and respectable woman such as herself and her family.
Thank you for another very interesting video
A good tribute to Anna, and her family. Well told.
This was so interesting. What a nice couple . Thank you. ❤
I'm from Ohio and I had no idea that she lived here. She really was pretty extraordinary for the time. The fact that she negotiated her way into the circus instead of being sold to it is pretty telling. She was smart enough to know her value and she expected it. That's pretty bold for a Victorian woman
EXCELLENT. HAPPY BIRTHDAY. GOD BLESS❤
