General Tom Thumb was one of the greatest performers of any size. Like Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) and Michel Dunn (The wild Wild West) would having similar opertunities as he did in his real life would have been a major star today.
Thinking about the difficulties of being small in the ordinary world made me think about constructing a world that was twice full size, as place to visit and wonder at. Imagine that house. Approached thro' a garden of large plants, you reach the front door. You have to reach up to the handle: The knocker is out of reach! The door swings open, to a world of monster furniture. Think about all the items in an everyday dwelling. Movie set producers could do the job, aided nowadays, of course, by 3D printing and Virtual Reality!
There is a movie I saw called, Freaks. Movie about travelling Circus performers (It was like Barnum). All the actors were real life performers and they were all great. The ending was scary. I wish I could get a copy of that movie because it talks about the history of each performer as an added bonus.
I know the channel's called forgotten lives but she's not forgotten here. I'm from Middleboro Mass and Tom thumb and Lavinia are very much alive here still.
It's nice that Barnum treated them with dignity and had them presented them as royalty. It's very sad that they were not able to restrain their expenses and had to work hard into old age.
For such a little person she had an amazingly large life! No life of a performer of Barnum's I've ever heard has ever been so full! She lived the American dream despite her tiny stature. Finding love, having a grandest of weddings, touring Europe and meeting the most prominent leaders of the day-What a BIG little life. Just one question though- where was her second husband buried? If she was buried next to general Tom, and but she remarried after his death, you would think that she would be buried next to her second husband....

I think they are posing formally with 'arms reversed.' I've only ever seen it standing up, though. It's very strange when sitting down. Smiling in photos is a modern phenomenon.
My daughter and her kids have never been to a circus because she is terrified of clowns. If there is a clown in a parade, she is immediately gone. When the original movie of IT came out, she completely freaked out. The movie gave her nightmares. When she was a toddler, I found the cutest clown lamp for her room. She screamed blood murder until I put it in the closet. After that, if I went near the closet, she would start screaming. I finally gave it away. She is now 36 and still can’t stand clowns. She says they are just plain creepy. She like me loves horror movies but if there is a clown in it, she is gone!
@@ForgottenLives I don't think it's as taboo as differentiating someone with autism from people of "normal intelligence". But yeah in general the word "normal" is kind of hot-button nowadays, so the safer bet is "average."
Normal statistically means the normal curve which includes all of us. The very short and very tall at either end and the average height people in the middle. It's a rather nice thought that we are all normal really 😊
“Normal” in this context means “conforming to a standard; usual, typical, or expected”. It is not pejorative terminology to say that there are people who fall into a normal height range of that time/place/demographic and there are people who fall on the outside of those ranges perhaps due to disease, genetics, etc. To say we are all normal height, or that no one is of normal height, is nonsensical. Thank you ForgottenLives for helping these people be remembered! First time here, love to see a creator who avoids stock pics/video👍
@@grimtt I'm a biologist so although I have no problem assuming that you found that exact definition somewhere, even science nerds would not use it as a standalone term. -Look, even you realized that it was necessary to clarify that normal height really means a RANGE of heights. I say, if you learn that there are alternative ways to talk about a minority or marginalized group that they find less painful to hear than another (even if that one is technically correct) ... why not at least try to remember to use it? It may not be technically wrong to call people "homosexuals," or "blacks" or "prostitutes," or "not normal," and if nobody has ever told you that those terms can be injurious, then you are truly innocent. -Just the other day I listened to an archival story from NPR (and you know how "politically correct" they're accused of being) about a serial killer, and the commentator referred to one of his victims as "a 14 year old prostitute". I literally gasped, imagining how it would feel to be one of that child's parents, hearing that. And that story was less than 20 years ago! -But it was innocent, because they didn't know any better yet. So the real, original, meaning of "woke" is, once you are awakened to the better choice between two different ways of saying something, it's "woke" to try to choose the better one in the future, to the best of your ability. If you ever forget, that's okay, just keep trying.
