      TheRamsesII - saw that same show in Cleveland and it just wasn’t the same as what I’m witnessing here. We were just happy to have THE Metallica be there b/c to me they were at that time, already legends. I didn’t think they’d ever get to the level of the Stones. Still owning shit after all these years. Especially in the fickle world of entertainment.

Everything about it is divine: the dangerous harmonies, the chord intervals, Hetfield's beautiful vocal harmonies on top of those chords, the presence, the sound, lyrics, I could go on. React to: Metallica - Creeping Death(Moscow 1991), They did that entire set in front of 500,000 people. It was also a very big deal considering the fallof the Soviet Union occurred just 4 months after this concert and no foreign bands were allowed to play during their reign. What I find awesome about it is because they were basically blocked off from the rest of the world, they didn't know what moshing and headbanging were so they saw that as an act of rebellion, but eventually during Metallica's set, the guards gave up and started having a great time along with the fans.

    Lars is a great drummer (especially back in the '80s), people just like to hate for a few different reasons. I can think of 3 main ones off the top of my head:
    *1.* The Napster thing, where he spoke out about illegal downloads. Some people are still salty, but what they don't ever acknowledge is that he was pissed about songs being downloaded and distributed before they were finished and officially released.
    *2.* Sometimes live he leaves out fills here and there. And sometimes on studio recordings they will add in fills using Pro Tools that aren't actually Lars (Hardwired has at least one in Moth Into Flame).
    *3.* The reason ...And Justice For All has no bass guitar is due to Lars demanding it be brought way down in the mix to the point of it being inaudible. Whether he was still grieving the loss of Cliff, or he just wanted the drums to stand out more, I'm not sure, but the sound engineer confirmed that it was Lars' "fault".
    For these reasons, certain people talk shit about Lars' drumming ability. Add in the fact that they had a few "slow" albums in the '90s and other people assumed he couldn't hack it any longer. The truth is, when Metallica were in their prime ('80s) Lars was among the best Metal drummers. He remained good in the '90s, they just changed their style (Load/Reload are very underrated btw). He might be a touch out of practice from time to time because he dedicates more time to family now...not to mention, he isn't getting any younger, so his skill level may not be like it once was. But to not like Lars for one reason or another, and then take it out on his ability to drum...well, that's just shitty and those people should be ashamed.

      AMEN. You hit the nail on the head. People need to chill the Hell out. The man isn't perfect but he is for the most part well intention-ed. Pretty much the WHOLE band wrongfully mistreated Jason the whole time he was in the group. It was immaturity on their part cuz they missed Cliff so much. People also forget that Lars is the reason Metallica even exists at all. It was HIM who wanted to put a band together and put that ad out in the paper that James answered. He busted his ASS practicing his drumming and doing all the footwork to make the band what it's become. So...respect.

      Paul Leach Lars was never one of the greatest drummers in the world. Even at his prime he was just decent. He adds fills where aren't supposed to be fills and forgets fills were there are. I do agree that he gets waaayyy too much hate. It's just extremely noticeable when your contemporaries are Dave Lombardo, Nick Menza, Charlie Benante and Gene Hoglan to name a few.

    • @Nightbreed82
      @Nightbreed82 6 років тому +1

      The Stargazer - That's fair. I agree that the drummers you named are a step above Lars. I still think Lars was pretty great back in the '80s, but certainly not the best. What I don't like is when people say Lars "sucks" as if he's not good at all.

    Let me tell you a short story, about metal music, Metallica, and being a "poser". I was born in 1981, but for various reasons, the primary among those being an overbearing grandmother who raised me, not allowing me to listen to "that kind of music", I didn't really get into Metallica until 1996 or so. I wish I had gotten into them sooner, but life goes how it goes. I was aware of Metallica, and I had heard Enter Sandman, which for some reason I wasn't that into as a kid/pre-teen. Well, fast forward to 1996, and the first Metallica album I finally got, was actually "Load", because I had heard the song "Until It Sleeps" on the radio and liked it. Later on, I borrowed "The Black Album" from my friend's sister, and let me tell you, my freshman year of high school, really getting into the thick of my teens (15), and life overall being pretty rough for me, that album was like my "Bible". Those songs "spoke" to me in a way that's hard to describe. Especially the song "The Unforgiven". That music helped me deal with, and survive, a lot of really hard shit in my young life.
    Long story short, Metallica quickly became my new favorite band, and they have remained so to this day. I later bought myself their 1984 album "Ride the Lightning", which I loved, and later still got "Reload" as a birthday gift. By the time we hit 1998, I had my first real summer job, and I was getting more into metal, and more into buying albums and not just listening to whatever was on the radio. I got myself "Master of Puppets" and "And Justice For All", the last of which would become pretty much my favorite album of all time. Even though "The Black Album" will always have a special place for me because of what it meant to me in my teens.
    It was hard for me, though, getting into Metallica when I did, because in the late 90s, it was no longer "cool" to like Metallica, and CERTAINLY not their "new shit". Metallica were "sellouts", and "not metal" anymore, and I was, in point of fact, called a "poser" for not only liking them, but specifically for getting INTO them via their 90s albums first. Instead of welcoming me into metal fanhood, and encouraging me to check out their older 80s music, and OTHER similar bands, I was met with hostility and negativity, because for a lot of so-called "metalheads", they have this idiotic frat boy mentality. Like metal is THEIRS, and you have to "prove" yourself to them, prove how "metal" you yourself are, via the bands you like, how much knowledge of the genre you have, etc. Really stupid, exclusionary bullshit.
    So take it from someone who "was there", and had to LIVE through those "Load" days (even though, by the way, I love Load albums), who had to take shit and hear shit constantly about Metallica sucking now, or even having my own personal integrity or taste attacked, because I had the audacity to like "New Metallica". It was beyond lame, and more than a little emotionally and psychologically hard to deal with, having your new FAVORITE band in the entire world, being shit on by so many, because hating Metallica at that time, through even the early 2000s, was the "cool" thing to do. So I experienced it all, dealt with it all, and weathered it.
    I, as a longtime Metallica fan, can and will tell you that YES, you are 100% "allowed" to love Metallica, and buy merch, and buy posters for your room, or anything else you might want to do. You don't have to know their entire goddamn catalogue right away, to love them. And you're not a "poser" for not knowing EVERYTHING about the band, or not knowing EVERY single song, etc. Not even a little. And take that from someone who, at the tender age of 15, right as I was JUST starting to really get into Metallica, I got called a "poser" by some loser at school, because I was unable to name many songs off the top of my head, outside of "Enter Sandman", "Unforgiven", "Until It Sleeps", etc. Instead of doing the right and mature thing, and positively encouraging me to listen to more of their songs, I was bullied and shamed for being a new fan, and only having heard a few songs, like you.
    So don't ever let anyone hand you that kind of BS. You're "allowed" to do, or like, whatever the hell you want. I love that you love metal, and I love that you feel this way about Metallica, because I do too. Frankly, I don't listen to Metallica a TON these days, but only because I've listened to their albums SO much throughout my life, it's like they're always there. But I love them, and I fully embrace you as a fellow fan, and encourage you to listen to more and more of their catalogue, and to continue getting into other "thrash" bands as well (my personal favorite style of metal).
    As a final note, I'll list a few of my own personal favorite Metallica songs, as a way of suggesting songs I really think you should check out (if you haven't already heard them):
    1. The Unforgiven
    2. Nothing Else Matters
    3. To Live is To Die (Instrumental)
    4. Blackened
    5. Escape
    6. Fade to Black
    7. Sad But True
    8. Hero of the Day
    9. Unforgiven III
    10. Outlaw Torn

      Very well said. I became a Metallica fan around 1987, with ...And Justice For All being my first chance to anticipate a new album from Metallica. The best I can piece together the hate for Metallica (which I have never understood) is the evolution of their sound. It lays out something like this:
      From ...AJFA (1988) to their eponymous album (aka the Black Album...1991) the band, for the most part, stepped away from the complex song structure style they had established from Ride the Lightning through ...AJFA. It would seem they took aim to get airplay on radio, shortening songs and simplifying riffs. It also saw the band start to record "proper" music videos. One was the sole video from ...AJFA and was anything but a normal music video; Black album saw FIVE songs turned to music videos.
      Load and Reload came out in 1996 and 1997. The radio-friendly progression continued, with songs starting to step outside the realm of heavy metal, let alone thrash metal. Load was more alt-rock than metal for many, and Reload showed a touch of the blues mixed in with their sound. In addition to the musical change, the band physically changed: everyone cut their hair short; instead of being guys in jeans and t-shirts, they were all fashionably attired. Even the album artwork had gone from amazing/awesome to artsy-fartsy.
      Looking in the album booklet for Load, some shots even show the guys wearing eyeliner. For those who saw them in the 80s, LONG GONE were the long-haired kids who wore jeans and tees and basically gave radio/pop music the middle finger (they even had a t-shirt made that had a hand holding a dagger coming out of a toilet with the words "METAL UP YOUR ASS!" on it). Those fans had taken up that look (and sound/attitude) and now their heroes had "embraced the system," so to say.
      As if all that hadn't been enough, the Napster case rolled around in 2000. During this time period, Metallica had roughly 335,000 fans banned from Napster. I'm sure that was the last straw for a lot of the haters, if they actually needed a final push. This particular entry is the only reason I can see to fling ANY hate Metallica's way. Regarding their musical change through 90s, I didn't mind it. The way I view Load and Reload is that for METALLICA, they were so-so albums, compared to their stuff from years past. But if some other lesser-known band had put those albums out, they would have been amazing, if that makes sense. Also of note in this time period: Jason Newsted, the bassist who replaced the great Cliff Burton when he died back in 1986, left the band in 2001. Seems like a MAJOR factor in that decision was the band (Hetfield, specifically) basically telling Newsted he could not do any side projects, that it was essentially like cheating on a wife.
      Oh, and one more album that might have been a push for the haters: St. Anger. The songs did become more bombastic and it was a return, of sorts to a much heavier sound. But one thing really stood out as being very different, very WTF. I think most people immediately think of the "ping" sound of Lars' snare drum throughout the album (which was a bit annoying but was not NEARLY as noticeable on the accompanying DVD that had the entire album performed by the band along with their new bassist Robert Trujillo, who is criminally underused by Metallica as he's an incredible bassist). But the thing that really stood out for me was the complete absence of guitar solos on the album. Not a single one! One of their amazing elements to their sound over the years has been guitar solos; I'm sure Kirk Hammett couldn't have been too happy with that choice.
      One final thought: life flows a LOT easier when you learn to not give a shit what other people think of you: your musical tastes, your sense of fashion, etc. (c:

    I was like 7-8 years old, when my dad showed me an VHS tape of Moscow 1991 live show. I watched them performing Enter Sandman. And this was the first time I saw Metallica performing live, and this little boy was shocked. Appearence, passion and smashing power of their band, they looked like some kind of music Gods to me. Dont get me wrong I heard Metallica songs before and really enjoyed them, but it was the moment when I saw a band doing a gig for the first time of my life. Years were passing by, and I watched and heard a lot of other artsts. But it was one thing I understood - Musician\band can only be rated\judged on stage. Where people can see their faith and dedication. To see their eyes shining and making yours to shine. Now I an 20, playing guitar and still in love with a band that inspired this little boy who was jumping on the couch near the TV. \m/

    ...and yes...there's no such thing as coming along too late when it comes to being a fan. It's why music is so often considered timeless. There's no closed doors. If you want to acquire t-shirts, posters, or whatever....go for it. You don't need our permissions/blessings. If it moves you that much, it's all the excuse you need to endorse it as a fan would. ;)

    I love your reactions and it's really wonderful seeing new people rocking out to this music. One thing I would suggest is at some point, listen to an entire album from beginning to end. Obviously this won't work well for a youtube video but you should do it for yourself. Unfortunately today's music is made for downloading whatever song you want to hear so the concept of a complete album is lost. It used to be that an album would be a complete work of art where everything from the cover art, liner notes, and even the order of the songs were chosen specifically to tell the album's story. You can see this easily with Metallica's albums Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, or And Justice For All. Megadeth and many other bands did this as well with their albums. If you think your mind is blown now, wait 'till you start listening to a complete story arc over the course of the entire album!

    If you've ever listened to any comment before then please listen to this one. Find footage of the Monsters of Rock tour in Moscow 1991. Pantera and Metallica put on some amazing sets in an unbelievable atmosphere. Read up on that tour. It was absolutely crazy. Some sources estimated around 450,000 in attendance for the outdoor three day concert. The Soviet police had never seen anything like it and had no idea about moshing. Police beating people repeatedly while Phil Anselmo (Pantera lead singer) calls for the crowd to not put up with it and that they didn't have the numbers to stop the show. I recommend checking that out if you enjoy the feel of the live shows.

    • @07zx14White
      @07zx14White 6 років тому +7

      Also, the concert was to celebrate the Berlin Wall coming down, more freedoms, the fall of the Soviet Union and its separations, the fight against communism in the area, and being able to play for the Russian fans that very obviously wanted it. It was so controversial because the Soviet Union wasn't allowed much western music or even trade of goods. It was a huge time in history and the concert took place in the turmoil of all that change. Amazing stuff

      @RowdyGrunt 6 років тому +6

      Absolutely spot on Kevin. I was in the Army at the time the Berlin Wall came down; and it was a crazy, somewhat scary time. And when these bands went over and did this absolutely insane show, that really opened not only the metal world, but the rest of the world to a taste of freedom. The show you are talking about is still legendary to this day. Great call man.

      That was an amazing show, but I'd just like to point out Yngwie played the SU 2 years earlier: Check out Trial by Fire - Live in Leningrad. Biggest attendance of any western artist in the country up till then. He played a bunch of sold-out shows, crowds went apeshit, tore off their clothes and threw bottles.

    One piece of "advice" though: on ultra fast songs like these it's better to check the studio version so u can understand what really goes on musically...not the same energy as live but live lots of nuances are lost...keep it up!

    This live concert is something completely special, and they knew that in 1989 when the video was released. When James screams "YEAH!!!" at 2:37, you felt it. Your expression on your face shows you felt it. That's what makes Metallica special, you feel it with every fabric of your being.

    Oh, as for the next Metallica song... *ORION*. This is the only option I'll give until then :)
    Regarding Lars, well, he was great at that time... Not the best, but he did great. The problem with him today is that he became lazy... There are shows in which he suddenly proves that he can play perfectly fine. But most of the time he just holds himself back, because... I don't know why :)

    • @alexg892
      @alexg892 6 років тому

    • @squashedeyeball

      al
      Yeah, but there is also the case of him not practicing anymore and the fact that many drummers from his time only got better as the years have passed... If Lars wanted, he could be much better.
      That being said, it doesn't take away the fact that Metallica is what it is thanks to Lars's management and sharp mind. So, I'm not one of those who say "Lars is ruining Metallica", because there would be no Metallica if not for him. But he can do much better live.

    To this day, no one brings a live show like Metallica. Some people do not like them anymore, but we all change as we age. They still bring it like very very few bands can do. I'm old enough to have bought Metallica's first album when it first came out. And your reaction to this band, has made me re-evaluate and re-appreciate the music I've listened to for so long. This was a wonderful video to wake-up to this morning. Glad you loved it and yeah if you can imagine they played this at the end of a two hour setlist. The energy required is unreal but then again most of them were all doing coke at this stage. So that's probably where the extra energy came from. BTW Metallica still put on a great show, not anywhere near as jumping around the stage but I mean they're in their fifties now so they have to slow down.

    I'm sure you've probably heard this already but in case you haven't, Metallica's first 3 albums are the ones that really matter. Also their 5.98 EP. And I guess a case can be made for And Justice For All. I'm not saying that all of their other albums are bad (though some are) but their first 3 are the best. I saw them live in 1985, 1986, then again in 1989 and they really did perform well. After that I just kinda lost interest. However I will say that when their latest album Hardwired...To Self Destruct came out, my wife had never seen them in concert and she really wanted to see them on this tour. She's been a fan since about the Black Album. I have to say that concert was bad ass. Probably one of the best shows I've ever seen and I've been to a lot of concerts. I'm still not too crazy about some of their albums but Hardwired was pretty good and the concert was amazing.

      BM dude same here! My wife kinda liked some Metallica until Hardwired came out and she loved Moth Into Flame. So we went to their San Diego show and we were blown away. Now she’s a huge fan. If their albums don’t convert you once you see them live you’re a fan for life. You’re part of the Metal Militia. Wasn’t sure if they still had it Live but dam they did that night. Also Love AJFA. Album doesn’t get enough “Justice” if you will In my opinion

    • @dmusiclife5727
      @dmusiclife5727 6 років тому

      Ayanle Mohamed The mixing on that album was copied and still is since it’s release. It wasn’t until Justice that you heard the bass drums and snare head so out in front of the mix. Also multi layered guitar tracks out infront while the bass guitar and most of the vocals were the lowest in the mix. Just listen to any Pantera album or metal/thrash after AJFA came out they all have that sound

    • @bm625
      @bm625 6 років тому

      Yeah, my wife was a fan already but had never seen them in concert. Seeing the Hardwired concert recently just made her even more of a fan. When I became a Metallica fan, their latest album was Ride The Lightning. That tour was the first time I'd seen them live. I just started losing interest when the Black album came out. It was a good album but it didn't compare to their earlier albums. Then came Load of Crap and Re-Load the Crap and that's when I was really out.

    Back in those days, Metallica went out on stage as if they were going out to war to murder the audience with furious intensity.
    Now that they've grown old, tired, and all have families, they go out on stage as if they were about to sing kumbaya to the "lovely Metallica family".
    Lars wasn't ever a technically amazing drummer, but he absolutely was flat out beast with the drumlines he wrote and performed - there should be NO question. But as the years went (post 1995), Lars quit practicing. He grew so incapable of doing his own drum lines in most of the songs that everyone was yelling for him to just give it up and give it to someone else who can even keep up with the rest of the band (who all MOSTLY kept things in order during live shows... Kirk, the lead guitarist now tends to botch about 85% of all of his solos and is just lazy as dogshit with them). But that is now the state of Metallica. It's just good that we have these earlier live performances to use as a bar which has been set for all inspired metal bands of today, and its a very very important bar to acknoweldge and work toward. Back then, metal concerts were a lot more loose, violent, dangerous with their regulations with the crowd and how the band interacted with them. Now its not the same at all. Over the history of people getting injured and killed due to the abundance of energy in a concert, safety and security regulations have multiplied riduculously, and as a result, bands don't perform in the same way they used to. But what can ya do eh? Long live the classic Metallica!

    There was a couple of times when you looked at the camera in stunned silence. When they released this video in '93 I watched with my friends, and they (probably me too) all had the same expressions. Great review. Cheers
