After years of inadequate dental treatment from the NHS I decided a month ago to go private, and I'm glad I did. It's going to cost a lot, but my confidence soared after I attended my first 45-minute dental inspection. 45 minutes! At the NHS dentist a bi-annual check-up barely took 5 minutes! And with the private dentist there is no language barrier. The NHS typically employs dentists and dental nurses who, sadly, have poor, even very poor English. It is vitally important to understand what your dentist is trying to tell you.
I have had two sets of dentures made on the NHS. They were both so bad and uncomfortable that I am unable to use them at all. So having had them because an unpitted olive in a restaurant snapped off one of my front lower ones, I have for years simply gone without. So I have gone from a confident male who had no issue dating to a virtual recluse. It has affected everything, from publicly performing, eating and having a sex life. I cannot afford professional treatment. So I feel totally let down. Something else you don't mention about the NHS is the waiting. The guys who do the NHS work also do private work, so they see a limited number of NHS patients. Which means waiting months for appointments.
@@ElectricTeeth Actually, no. The "smile studio" I was first signed up to told me I would have to wait 8 months for a second appointment. Then It would take four to six weeks to get my denture back. Apparently they had a huge backlog. Then I found a dental technician, who makes the teeth for many of the dentists in the area. She first tried to repair my first set but they were so bad she gave up and started fresh. She seemed to be very much in a rush and I think the alginate impression was poor which didn't help. After a couple of visits to try to get the new set to sit comfortably I just gave up using them. They had sharp edges which cut into or irritated my gums. All of that cost me over £500 which I don't have. From time to time I go online and look at vids of people showing how to make dentures. Which is what I was doing when I found your vid. I once knew a dental technician who had a factory. He made a fortune. Maybe that's what I should have trained for...

I dream of having my smile back. I fell ill in early 2018, resulting in high-dose of steroids since then. This has taken its toll on my teeth and I now have around 11 broken teeth, 6 front teeth, 5 bottom teeth. I was thankful for the mandatory face masks as they covered my teeth. Always had a great set of teeth before falling ill (I was a volunteer medic that contracted a virus resulting in sepsis and other complications that ultimately caused reactive arthritis at the age of 46) Currently there is around a 4+ year waiting list to see an NHS dentist here in Cornwall. I explained why I missed the appointment, the reason being that I was rushed into hospital and came around in the resus dept following being shocked but they didn't seem to care and had no intention of adding me back to their patient list. So here I am, waiting to win the lottery or something. My smile is so embarrassing, I have to chew my food with one upper and one lower tooth as it's too uncomfortable to eat anywhere else in my mouth. I've also noticed that my speech and pronunciation of words have changed, I sound like I have a lisp, and my S's, F's and words with Th sound nothing like they used to. I’m having to get a partial lower denture - I’m trying to find a video to see how they fit... I’m missing one lower tooth either side in mid-back. The gap on the right is fairly big so I get sore gum when I chew food. It’s been like that for about 4 years. But now the tooth next to the larger gap on the right is going to need pulling eventually-it’s okay at the moment, but it won’t last forever. When my Dentist suggested pulling it I said I didn’t want to make the gap even bigger because it gets tender. That’s when she suggested a partial denture. We’ve decided to take the mould & create the denture for just the one gap each side, and in time when the tooth needs pulling the denture will be sent off and that space added in. But I’m not sure what a lower denture looks like? How they fit? It’s an NHS denture I’m getting.
The exact look will depend on your particular needs Kat. They are made from a combination of plastic, nylon or metal plates with false teeth attached, a partial denture is specifically designed to clip or mount to natural teeth via metal clasps. True but can I find an NHS dentist? Not one. All NHS dentists refuse to see any NHS patients but will see those paying privately. So, how is this so if NHS and Private are supposed to be the same?
I cannot specifically comment on your personal situation, but it is certainly not the case that ALL NHS dentists are refusing to see any NHS patients. Certain parts of the country are under strain with not enough NHS dentists in those areas which might be the case for you. The situation is also exacerbated by the pandemic. Ultimately it should be possible to get into an NHS dentist in the foreseeable future and be provided with dentures.
@@ElectricTeeth Well, I phoned up the NHS dental helpline and they tell me that there are no NHS dentists that would see NHS patients in the WHOLE of Kent even if it is urgent (I had a fractured tooth). They advised me to take painkillers for it and unless I come down with a fever, I will "just have to wait". BUT when I phoned a private dentist, he saw me the next day. What does that say?
Yep soonest appointment for me MARCH 2022!!! Disgusting....apparently they can only see 10 per day....yet 30,000 can pack into a football stadium.. I am desperate and have paid my dues for years the NHS is a disgrace.
@@ElectricTeeth I reckon "certain parts of the country" = the majority of the country. I can't find an NHS dentist who will take new NHS patients within 50 miles of me. But pay privately and one can get an appointment tomorrow... which is what I had to do. They can advertise as "NHS"... but refuse new NHS patients. It's just misusing the NHS name to fish for customers to pay privately and go into debt.
What if your dentist is incompetent? I have nhs partial dentures and he had to flatten all the back teeth because he's a dimwit who can't take proper imprints. He is also a private dentist. So there wouldn't be any difference for me, only that I pay through my non-teeth for him to be a dimwit.
Try finding a dentist who will take NHS in my neck of the woods. So I have to go private and pay more than I can afford. It's either that or no teeth. But of course that's precisely why the gov't underfund the NHS - to drive more and more people into debt for services they've already paid for through National 'Insurance'. Mind you one wonders how much NHS money is squandered in paper pushing - so those teeth actually cost the taxpayers *more* than private when you add up all the NHS 'admin' costs on top.
I am in desperate need for new ones. I can't use these due to a huge break. Literally cosmetic. But I can't bring myself to use the NHS ones, they're so bad my mum has them. I've had these for 10 years they were temp ones and made by the dental hospital and amazing. Yet the local dentist has its own tech and they're so bad.. I would give anything for pay monthly dentures 😂😂
@@rochelleharris9940 Good! It's true, I've had both, I smoke and implants don't like that. If you can tolerate a few weeks of discomfort while your mouth adjusts to the dentures it's easily worth it. It feels as though I have my upper teeth back, they can be coloured or aged to look however you like. I'd advise against white because they'll look like dentures. Don't watch any 'My Dental Journey' etc, on the internet either, as they all greatly exaggerate how difficult it is. Best wishes.

Hi there, i have lost quite a few teeth over the years. Fortunately they are teeth at the back so they cant be seen. I have started to struggle to chew though. Im debating whether to go with nhs or private. Do you have any advice as to which is best for Chewing rather than cosmetic? Well i know private will be better but will i be able to chew foods normally with nhs dentures? Thanks in advance
Lee. Usually within a few days to a week you will be getting used to them. If they feel like they are cutting into the gum, it may take a bit longer as the soft tissue may be irritated and therefore the wearing of them will continue to cause some discomfort. It could be that they need minor adjustment for a comfortable fit. So if you have tried for about a week, give your dentist a call.
The difference between NHS and private? My new dentures were cutting in and I went back to the private dentist to get adjustment. I think I went back about six times but they fit perfectly now. All included in the cost. Hasn't your dentist offered to adjust them? He/she should even if NHS. I doubt I would have got such a good service with NHS one though. My husband was told his (NHS ones) would settle and nothing could be done!vThey never fitted!
I needed some top dentures and went with NHS. When the teeth came back i was told . Oh we did not do the very back teeth. Very matter of fact. So now i am left with a very sunken face. Thanks for nothing.
@@ElectricTeeth On paper, sure. But NHS dentistry is in a calamitous state and I went private because I couldn't stand the cursory attitude any longer.
Trust me any work you get on the nhs Is poor quality and tbh the dentist doesn’t care because basically they get paid the same amount for any work you get, for example if you need 10 fillings they will only get paid for 1!! So they just don’t care about the patient which is so sad 😞 I suffered for years with my oral hygiene 😩 but then I went private ngl I spent £16000 on veeners and crowns I can tell you now best decision I ever made probably gonna spend the rest of my life paying for it but hey it’s worth every penny 👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Hoping someone can advise? I have to have my front two teeth replaced due to a trauma. At the moment a denture is the only thing within my budget. As I'm only 26, I wasn't sure whether I would get a better look/fit with a private dentist or is it comparable to the NHS? Any help or advise would be very appreciated
A private denture is likely to look slightly better due to the materials etc you can choose from. You pay for this though, so if you are on a budget you are going to pay more. The fit really should be comparable.
I'm 29 and I was diagnosed with dentinogenisis imperfecta, I've lost all my uppers so I got dentures. I got mine on NHS and they look great, the gums are quite flat but apart from that, they're good. You pick the colour you want, I went for like 4 shades from the whitest as it's more natural
You miss the main point. I have NHS teeth. Top and bottom. Full set. They are solid. There is no flexabily in either the top or bottom. My mouth feels like a gob full of plastic. Now I went to a private denture maker in my town and he showed me for about £1800 I could have a far better product. He showed me all and how flexible they are in the mouth the are softer and both upper and lower flex with jaw movement. Great. Much more comfy. Brilliant actually. You dont know what you are babbling about because you miss the main difference. 😮😮😮

Does anyone know if dentures are covered under Denplan in the UK?
So you're aren't that desperate afterall. Just go and ask your mum for your teeth back. 😂 Problem solved
I wonder if you didn’t keep up the monthly repayments on your teeth, would they come and repossess them 😁
How much for a single mole tooth?
Single denture price?
It very much depends Lucy. Location, material, the dentist all have an impact. Best to get an accurate quote from a dentist near to you.
The fit, appearance and comfort of modern private dentures are easily comparable to implants.
Thanks. This is the first bit of good news I've read in all my research
@@Johnconno Thanks. Do modern private dentures interfere with your ability to taste?
@@rochelleharris9940 Not at all, your palate isn't covered at all.
You shouldn't require any fixative either.
They're not what I expected at all
@@rochelleharris9940 That's a lot of 'at all's', sorry, it's late. Best.
I finally got mine they don't tell you after you have multiple teeth out you have to wait 6 months to heal i have waited 2 years in total i had to have my teeth out in hospital because i have fibromyalgia( a chronic pain illness) and anxiety....i couldn't do it awake....🙄 and yeah 8 months later i got my denture on the nhs i wasn't allowed to pick the tooth shade or alter it they're a bright white and i would of had 1 tooth drilled down it doesn't match my other tooth 😖😖 but i didn't pay for it and if you break or damage it in the first year that's your problem😖😖
have wasn't allowed to change anything so its like great🙄🙄🙄 i wish i did have the money to get another one but i don't😩😩
I wasn't i dont know why have was put on that comment🙄😂
I had to get a lot of teeth out because of covid and the dentist not doing nhs work so now my front tooth has broke ams just wondering if it be better to get the 6 teeth I have left at the top ams get densures can someone help me.
If you can keep your natural teeth it will always be better. You can get a partial denture to fit around your existing teeth.
I wish I could send you a photo of the NHS denture, absolutely horrible, my husband looks like a Frankenstein
Yes, you will be able to chew foods normally with NHS dentures.
Can you get your dentures BL1 whitest you can get on NHS
As far as I know you can get them as white as you want.
Had new full top set fitted ,, feels like there cutting into my gums ,, how long does it take for the pain to go

Its like shoes, you have to wear them in. Probably won't need to polish them though.
@@sp-pz8uc LOL
This sounds like something you need to take up with your dental practice. They have a duty to make things right.
No they always have a reason they can't
@@kathycox9994 Reason being ?
@@ElectricTeeth On paper, sure. But NHS dentistry is in a calamitous state and I went private because I couldn't stand the cursory attitude any longer.
Does NHS provide implant?
Thanks
Typically no. There may well be some exceptions but these tend to be more exceptional circumstances.
@@ElectricTeeth thank you
Can people use the NHS but pay more for the better teeth?
Yes. You can get NHS checkups but pay extra for private services.
Fly to Thailand to get it done, it costs peanuts here.
How much
@@goodquestion8064 I'm getting partials for top teeth, metal with 8 teeth for $300
Trust me any work you get on the nhs Is poor quality and tbh the dentist doesn’t care because basically they get paid the same amount for any work you get, for example if you need 10 fillings they will only get paid for 1!!
Private metal partial $5000 CND
Long story short NHS dentistry is Governmental control price for dental services never work
Hi
Hoping someone can advise?
I have to have my front two teeth replaced due to a trauma. At the moment a denture is the only thing within my budget. As I'm only 26, I wasn't sure whether I would get a better look/fit with a private dentist or is it comparable to the NHS?
Any help or advise would be very appreciated
A private denture is likely to look slightly better due to the materials etc you can choose from. You pay for this though, so if you are on a budget you are going to pay more. The fit really should be comparable.
@@ElectricTeeth thank you so much.
@@teelesynclair5902 thank you so much. That's really helpful and reassuring. I'm having my front two puller next week and I'm pretty nervous.
Anyone can make fake ghost white robot teeth.
I admire dentists and technicians that make realistic smiles that look like they were made by God.
And if you need adhesive like i do make sure its zinc free cause too much zinc in your body makes you have side effects🙄😖😖😖😩
How many hippos do you see wearing dentures? Exactly, none. Why? Because they are not vain and don't care what other hippos think.
Nhs dentel not good the use cheep plastic teeth and u can not complane about it 😕
Oui bonjour comment allez-vous vous allez bien moi je suis Sénégalais c'est Aline
