Why Aren't Finland and Sweden in NATO?

- Finland and Sweden are Western European democracies, so why aren't they in NATO?
NATO has existed since the beginning of the Cold War and has expanded eastwards over the decades as more European nations have embraced democratic norms. But Sweden and Finland have been democracies since NATO's inception, so why has it taken them seventy years to apply to join the club? The answer lies in the two states' complicated relationships with today's Russia and the former Soviet Union, as well as in Finland and Sweden's longstanding desires to be neutral in world affairs at all costs.

Should Finland and Sweden be accepted by NATO?
Certainly if they so desire.
💜💪💜
ABSOLUTELY
🙏💜🙏
ye why not
Why not Ukraine in 2006 or 2014? Is it because THEY don't have to run to anyone's aid unless an attack is launched through the country itself? USA happily pays 40B to the next mujahideen in Europe, but this European Afganistan is eerily unacceptable to NATO.
no, gives more power to usa

This aged well… 🥂
Oh nooo please don't call Finland Scandinavia because we're not...
Idk why he didn't use the term Nordic countries instead. It would have been more accurate
Geographical, it's considered part of the region known as Scandinavia..... countries and regions included are:
 Denmark
 Norway
 Sweden[3]
Sometimes also:
 Åland
 Faroe Islands
 Finland
 Iceland[a]
Nordic territories that are not part of Scandinavia:
 Bouvet Island
 Greenland
 Jan Mayen
 Svalbard
At least according to Wikipedia....
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scandinavia
The people? No. Obviously you don't call yourself Scandinavian. That's great. Geographically, however, it's Scandinavia, friend.
@@eddiehancockii "Scandinavia" comes from the "Scandinavian Peninsula" which really only includes Norway, Sweden and negligible parts of the Finnish tundra. But the term Scandinavia also includes Denmark for cultural and historical reasons, especially since the southernmost parts of the Peninsula used to be Danish. To call Finland, let alone the Faroe Islands, let even more alone ICELAND a Scandinavian country will get you laughed at. Finland is part of the larger Fennoscandian peninsula, and of course the Nordic, but not Scandinavia, never been.
Don't ever get the idea that you can understand the world through wikipedia /Sincerely, a Swede
@@surroundgatari never said i did understand anyone. Nor am i trying to. I merely pointed out facts say "fuck you" to your feelings, no matter who you are orwhere you are from. Circle of life, kid. Circle of life.... 😉
@@surroundgatari Nah it’s Scandinavia stay mad
The actual reason for Sweden not joining NATO wasn't the absurd belief that neutrality would protect us from the Warsaw pact, after all we had seen neutrality fail during WW2.
The actual reason we remained outside was to not leave Finland alone as the sole "neutral" nation in the Baltic, as the Soviet Union would without a doubt have taken a more threatening posture towards Finland to compensate for Nato's expanded influence in the Baltic sea.
Very one sided. Sweden did a lot to help the allies.
Also, Finland is a nordic country, but not a scandinavian. Just sayin.
Finland mostly in western europe is considered both scadinavian and nordic
@@GwainSagaFanChannel Totally wrong. Scandinavia is Sweden, Norway and Denmark, where the scandinavian languages are spoken. Finland is not part of Scandinavia. Greetings from Sweden.
@@GwainSagaFanChannel You are wrong.
Scandinavia is only Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
@@GwainSagaFanChannel no, as a norwegian, we do not consider finland to be scandinaviasn since that is 3 nations, norway, sweden and denmark, they are nordic thought
This is very one sided reporting Sweden helped the Allies as well they did what they thought was best for the country and they were right
Agree!
Russia: you guys should not join nato or i will invade you
Finland and Sweden: how about we do it any ways
Stupid comment.
You kinda missed that Sweden traded mechanical parts with the Allies, crucial for their wareffort. And Sweden provided them with military intelligence, such as the plan of Barbarossa and that the Bismarck was setting sail. Sweden sent 8000 volonteers (soldiers with servicerifles) and 1/3 of its airforce, planes and pilots, to fight the Soviets with Finland along with hundreds of artillery pieces, thousands of rifles and millions of bullets. Sweden aided and supplied the resistance in both Norway and Denmark in their fight against Nazi occupation.
Swedens actions against Germany convinced Hitler that invasion plans needed to be planned, just in case the iron ore had to be secured. So in 1943, an invasion plan was put together, just in case.
But sure... All Sweden did to stay neutral was sell iron to Germany
Thank you.
Why be on a single side when you can be on both
@@alfredwaldo6079Sweden was on Finland's side.
Well this aged well
Sweden and Finland are now both in NATO
This aged like Milk lol
They're still not in
@@catmonarchist8920 Finland is hehehe
Also, the EU have it's own defense clause, and since at the time it also included Britain, it meant than any invasion of Finland and/or sweden could risk nuclear retaliation from both Britain and France, or would at the very least cause a war with western Europe.
Which is why even now, attacking them would be a bad idea with just France as a nuclear protector and the EU as a whole, but obviously, Russian agression showed the need of back up from the US and the return of British heavy support.
Sweden sided with North Vietnam though, sending aid and non-military personnel (such as medical supplies & doctors)
Well... well... well... this video is already outdated.
*aged like milk*
on april the 4th 2023, finland joined nato.
The video was made 1 year ago, lmfao
Look Back History exclusive: Finland joins Scandinavia!
Finland has already joined NATO a few days ago.
This aged like fine wine for Finland (as of December 2023)
Video might be outdated soon lol, finland and sweden are joining NATO
The new Hanko Battalion was formed, named after the archipelago where the units were sent to mount an offensive on a Soviet naval base. The number of Winter War veterans wanting to join is noteworthy. According to them, After Soviet forces evacuated Hanko in December 1941, the volunteer battalion was disbanded.
The next Swedish military unit to join Finnish ranks was the Svir company, named so after the river near Ladoga.
Yes your back
I am!
Interesting topic! But video should have be more accurate.

This aged well.

With sweden finland schwiss gone from being neutral and taking stance against russian expansion and illegal annexation of ukraine is quite dangerous since they were quite helpfull in maintaning peace and organizing peace talks between both sides
