What Causes Conflict in Israel-Palestine?

  • What causes Palestine and Israel to come into conflict? Some might simply point to their religious differences-Israelis are primarily Jewish while Palestinians are mostly Muslim-but while they do fight over specific sacred sites, the broader conflict stems from much more temporal concerns. Namely, the fact that two distinct nations are both attempting to stake their claims to the same land, and that Israel and Palestine have very different views on where the border between them should fall.

People interested in this topic and eager to look for more should look at the events in Lebanon (the civil war and the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah War) and in Jordan (Black September).

Had they wanted to divide the land they would've divided a much bigger territory and not created a new nation with no historical past, Jordan. What is Jordan and Palestine are southern Syrians as the the Lebanese are coastal Syrians. Bit the Brits and French creatures these new nations to keep the peoples divided. The way I see it a 2 state solution is no longer viable. For it to be accepted by palestinians it would require the recongition of at least the 1967 borders meaning that Israel would need to take back all of its illegal settlers in the West Back, something I don't see them ever doing. And even if a 2 state solution were implemented, there would be virtually no chance for Palestine to become stable and politically secure which means that the conflict would continue further. At the point we are now israeli politics is becoming more and more brazenly fascist and palestinias are essentially living under an apartheid system. The only viable solution is the creation of 1 state of Israel-Palestine which would uphold secular values and protect the rights of both arabs and jews. It would be extremely hard to implement and it would very messy if it ever were but I do think that it is the only viable solution that respects the human rights of all. Progressives and anti-zionists should start advocating for a 1 state solution more openly instead of hand waving the problem as a "complicated conflict".
Anyway, very informative and good video as always. Good job!

@@LookBackHistory The most important thing is to create a system which would by itself erase or limit the social conditions that lead to sectarianism and nationalist extremism. We shouldn't just try to create a way for the palestinian people to govern themselves. We should also make sure that that self goverance is stable and capable of prospering. I don't think that an autonomous zone within a foreign and hostile state would lead to any of that. The creation of hamas which rejected any type of peace with Israel proves that.

While the idea of unity generally sound good, I do not believe it should always happen.
As for Israel, it is a nation-state created after the horrors of the holocaust. While we all can unilaterally agree that it was a terrible point in human history, it was a small piece of the puzzle when it comes to the targeting of Jews. Throughout history time and time again Jews have been target in most times of society. Especially in Europe and Middle East (with discrimination in the rest of Asia not being heard of or not common.)
Which is why with all that in mind there needs to be a Nation-State for Jews for their own protection and well being. As much as I want to believe in the good will of humanity and that they will be acceptances in an Arab (or other) majority society history has shown otherwise. And if Israel is no longer a Nation-State for Jews, there might never be another again.

@@maxs.5112 Well, in my opinion, when Israel declared independence in 1947, the jewish zionists living there had no valid, legitimate or fair claim to what the renamed Israel. They had not inhabited the region for almost 2000 years and they were just the very distant descendants of jews that had intermarried more than1500 years ago with all kinds of ethnicities all over the world, in places like China, India, Azerbaijan, Ethiopia, Yemen, Tunisia, Spain, Poland, Germany, etc. They had the same valid claim to the land of palestine that the italians have to the formers land of the roman empire, or that Greece has to all of turkey. That is, they had no valid claim.
Palestinians, on the other hand, where the native inhabitants of the land, as they had been for 1300 years. They were probably more close geneticaly to the ancient israelites than the jews themselves.
But, what's done is done, and using the same logic White australians have no place in Australia, or basically everyone in the US and Canada, as they came to a land that they weren't indigenous to, evicting the natives in the process.
So that's why today, in 2022, I'm against the destruction of the Israeli state. What I'm favour of is for reconciliation, for the recognition of crimes commited on all sides, and of ending the discrimination of arabs in Israel, enabling their social integration, at the same time that their culture, language and heritage is recognised and protected within Israel.
So yeah, to me the creation of Israel was a mistake, something I would oppose in the 1940s but something I don't now.

You got pretty much everything right for the early history of the issue however you missed a lot regarding the more recent history. For one, you missed that Israel has expelled another almost 400k Palestinians during the 6 day war. Also, the reasons for the intifadas (both times) is neither just the settlements nor that the 2000 peace plan failed. Both intifadas started because Palestinians were frustrated that nothing was happening in regards to Israel's violence and expulsions against Palestinians, which were happening on a daily basis. The first intifada ended when the PLO and the Israeli government signed the Oslo Accords, as Palestinians thought that this peace plan would stop Israel's violence. But it didn't. Nor did Israel recognize Palestine as a state. Nor did they stop the settlements. And these are all obligatory according to the Oslo Accords. That's why they failed, because Israel refused to follow it. Another issue with the ending is that the PLO is actually trying to make a peace plan with Israel. It's only Israel that won't walk along a path to peace. The "Palestine Papers" show the thousands of emails sent to Israel by the PLO in an attempt to make a plan, but Israel judt ignored them. The PLO has been calling on Israel, even at UN general assemblies, to immediately start talks. And Israel ignores this. I understand how I sound like I'm biased, but everything that I'm saying is true, and you can search it up yourself. When you start looking deeply at the conflict, you'll see that it truly isn't a conflict, despite how most people see it. It's an unequal problem, with one side having no repercussions for their bad actions while the other side not even having an army. And looking at it through a lense that ignores how unequal the situation is only contributes to this issue, and makes it into a bigger one.

On the topic of expulsions, it's absolutely true that hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have been forced or otherwise pressured to leave their homes (mostly for Jordan and Gaza) since 1948. However, it's also the case that virtually all Jews from across the world's 20 or so Arab states have also fled their homes (to settle in Israel) in that period. The fact of the matter is that all of those people, Jews and Arabs, need space on which to live. I do think it's a tiny bit unreasonable to expect Israel to give up land for peace (and when I say unreasonable I don't mean morally, but practically: I don't think it is something that they will ever accept) given how tiny Israel is compared to the many Arab countries of the world who have, undeniably, tried to wipe it off the map in the past. Egypt alone, for example, is about 45 times larger than Israel. Jordan is 5 times the size, and already houses a large proportion of the Palestininan nation.
On the issue of strength, while Israel and Palestine may not be equals in terms of military and political power that does not make what's been going on in the region for the last 7 decades any less of a conflict. I daresay that you will struggle to find any international dispute that has ever been wholly fair. For example, Britain beat the Zanzibar Sultanate in a war that lasted a whole 40 minutes in 1896; Britain and Zanzibar were nothing close to being equals, that does not somehow make their battle not a conflict. Anyway, you're right to point out that in the last decade or two (maybe slightly more or less depending on how you want to define it) Israel has been by far the superior military power, and also has been the less eager of them to enter negotiations. However, an argument can be made that Israel has come to an unfortunate but not irrational conclusion, that Palestine and the Arabs generally are just not reliable interlocutors. In the past, the situation was reversed: with the entire Arab world against them, Israel was the weaker negotiator and the one more eager for peace. They accepted the much smaller state allotted to them by the UN in 1948, for example. Israel's buildup of power in the 21st century is a response to the fact that diplomacy markedly didn't work for them in the 20th. Their extreme caution and sometimes over-zealous defensiveness (to the point that it becomes offensive) has to be placed in the context that Israel is one of only a handful of states which a significant international grouping is determined to wipe out. On the other hand, no reasonable person believes that Arab culture could potentially be annihilated.

the argument isn't about a country its about a people, Turks didn't inhabit the region they just ruled over the Arabs that lived there. the Israelis came and then literally stole thousands of people homes that they illegally occupy while forcing the owners of those homes to live as exiles from their own home. but good job strawmaning
