Another tidbit is that Liechtenstein refused to recognise Czechoslovakia and its successor states Czechia and Slovakia for the longest time, not doing so until 2009. The reason being that Czechoslovakia seized the dynasty of Liechtensteins properties in the country after World War 2. These properties included several castles and palaces, as well as farmlands and forests 10x the size of the country of Liechtenstein. Just goes to show as well how weird the country of Liechtenstein can be, when the ruler owns land outside his country, far larger than the country.
They exist because they were so small and insignificant that France, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria didn't want to waste the resources and they didn't make any waves. 😂 Even the Nazis didn't want them.
Apart from Monacho and Liechtenstein there is still one other country in europe that has his monarch rule it to some degree. And this one is actually an absolute monarch whos word is law and the last elected absolute monarch in europe left: The Pope and the Vatican City state. Yes legally speaking the Pope is an absolute monarch that gets elected to his office once and who then rules in Vatican City without question. Sure the Vatican is basically just a company Headquater in essence but still its a country wiht all the rights and powers that status gives.
No agression, I am from Liechtenstein and the Swiss soldiers just marched in the wrong directon and crossed the border by accident. There are no visible borders with switzerland.
Indeed. It's supposed to be quite a good tourist spot. Though, one wouldn't want to spend too much time there - just a day trip or something - considering the country's size.
I was there last year! And one day was fully enough to see all 😂 I was in the capital vaduz and i saw the nice castle! Vaduz is nice and small! I dont recommend to stay longer than a day because the prices for foods etc are extremely high! Pasta 🍝 for example 30€ 😳 and so on…
Because Switzerland and Austria are not like Ameirca. If the US had been a little less of a warmonger then small states like West Florida would also have existed, and wouldn't that have been swell.
Do you know of another country that survived against the odds? Comment below!
How about countries that no longer exist?
Could be good! potentially a series.
San Marino, also went there. Really cool place, super funny how there is an armory basically in every street (fun fact)
@@tankadar Nice, I didn't know that.
luxembourg, andorra, monaco, switzerland....a video on any of these would be sweet

It really did survive against the odds! I knew it was small, but didn't realize it was 25-km long small.
Yep, tiny! The fact that it exists (along with quite a few other microstates!) on such an empire-loving continent is quite miraculous.
I wonder if he goes full HM and questions why every country exists
Nah, only the ones with good stories!
Amazing video! I always did wonder exactly how that specific german principality has lasted so long
Thanks! 😃

The intro line of this video is extremely underrated.

Why does Lichtenstein exist? Why does Monaco exist? Why does San Marino exist? Why does Andorra exist? Why does Vatican exist? Because
I went to Liechtenstein when I was living in Germany. It was a really pretty country!
Gotta love how Austria lost every possible war.
...and also started them all
Lichtenstein is that one lucky kid that is liked by every teacher so he cannot get into any trouble.
0:54 the coat of arms 💀
Professional, to the point generally awesome video 👍
To be fair though, Switzerland's army has crossed into Lichtenstein on a couple of occasions. Aggression maybe??

Interesting. Could be worth a visit. Obviously when we can all travel safely again.

Gosh, I don't know why I didn't just say that. Would've saved me quite a bit of work.
@@LookBackHistory Yes, you would have had a lot less work 😅 Nevertheless, thank you very much for the good video 👌
Thank you very much also - Liechtenstein is always a good story... :-)
A relic of the past
the european empires and their comedic blunders of the medieval age
They brought Licht to the Stein.
So, Liechtenstein.
