  • This is the first Robert Pattinson scene from the movie. Watch as Reverend Preston Teagardin arrives in town as the new preacher. He sees the chicken livers which Arvin's grandmother Emma has bought for the congregation, grotesquely dipping his fingers into the brown juice on the plate and inserting them into his mouth, before totally insulting her.

The way I understand this scene is that the preacher lied to the congregation about how the dish tasted like so he could have all of it for himself. The narrator implied that he liked it when he first tasted it. In the next scene where Arvin was with his grandmother in their car, he told her that he noticed the preacher gobbling up the dish without sharing it to the congregation.

My interpretation is that Teagardin is narcissistic, manipulative, and above all: deeply hedonistic. This man takes what he wants, when he wants it, shamelessly. He gets high on the fact that a room full of people look up to him and want to please him. This scene like several others in the film represents his selfishness - he wanted the chicken livers all to himself, funny that they are the greasiest and heaviest food on the table because they represent his gluttonous, predatory nature....the way he sticks his finger straight into the grease of the chicken livers, and the way he drops down the rest of his plate just to take the chicken livers all for himself. but of course he would NEVER admit (not even to himself) that that is his real intention is to take it all for himself because after all, he's a narcissist and really does believe everything he preaches. The guy genuinely believes he's doing a great favor to god and these people, out of the goodness of his heart he's taking the cheap (and delicious) dish all for himself. Lol. His garishness and the way he talks down to people, including his predatory behaviour/gaslighting Lenora and the other young girls throughout the film to get what he wants.. When Arvin confronts him is the most interesting scene in the film because we see what happens when a man like this is confronted - even in the end, he refuses to acknowledge his sick, immoral behavior. Its all Lenora's fault because a delusional narcissist would NEVER admit any fault. what a slimy, creepy, gloriously gluttonous character... fantastically despicable and the worst type of person ever to be a preacher. lol! bravo! loved this movie so much.

Heaths adaptation is scary in many sense because he explained where society is going, and people are drawn to the truth and evil in some sense, the same thing happend with Javier Bardems charachter in No country for old men.
Its dangerous because people nowadays are being influenced to easy.
Most people who doesn´t like or understand The Joker is people who cant relate to what he is saying, because they lived in other peoples eyes, easy lives. I dont agree with that tho, life is difficult for most people just in different ways, The Joker charachter is often drawn to people who are lonely and feels like society has given up on them.

Would you consider yourself to be a good person?
How many lies have you told, and what do you call someone who lies? Have you ever stolen something, no matter how small, and what do you call someone who steals? Have you ever taken God's name in vain/blasphemed, even ‘OMG’? That’s taking the name of the God who gave you life and using it in the place of a cuss word - would you do that with your mother’s name? Have you ever dishonoured your parents? Jesus said whoever looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery in his heart. Have you ever looked with lust? Most people probably have broken all 5 of these commandments. I myself have. I’m not judging you but if you have done these things then you’re a lying, thieving, blasphemous, rebellious adulterer-at-heart by your own admission. That's only 5 of the 10 commandments. God is fully just so he must and will punish every and all sin (which is departure from/rebellion towards God and the conscience) when he judges us. He cannot simply cancel our debt and let us go, or else he would be unjust. If you went into the courtroom and said: ‘Yes Judge, I’ve done these things but I also give money to the Red Cross and volunteer at an old-age home. I try my best to love people’ the judge is not going to take that into consideration. You’ve broken the law; the good you’ve done won’t help at all on the day of judgement.
If he judges you by the moral law will you be innocent or guilty? Heaven or Hell? The answer is Hell. Doesn’t that concern you? But, fortunately, that is not God’s will. He is so loving and merciful, he made a way for you to be forgiven. The Son of God came down as a man, Jesus Christ, and lived a perfect, sinless life, so was the perfect sacrifice. He excruciatingly suffered and died on the cross to pay the FULL debt we owe because of sin; justice is fully done. You and I broke God's law and Jesus paid the fine in his life's blood, being resurrected again 3 days later. That’s why he said “It is finished” on the cross - in other words the debt has been paid. God has the payment ready to go for you. What you need to do is repent (recognising you are a sinner deserving God's punishment, turn to Him) and trust ALONE in Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins. Our works can do nothing as by the standard of God’s moral law we fail, but faith in him is enough to save us from all sin - past, present and future! Then though you have grievously offended God, he will forgive you and you will inherit eternal life being reborn in the Holy Spirit when you put your trust in the Lord and saviour. Too, you enter a covenant relationship with God - sonship, and truly I tell you your life will change in his presence. So repent and trust (i.e. Biblical faith), receive the free gift of grace.
He redeemed me. God, The King of The Universe, came down as a man. He lived the first 30 years of his life as a poor carpenter then spent the next 3 preaching, healing and saving souls - all the while being persecuted, insulted and hated by his own people - and took the punishment to save our lives. It’s the most amazing love that anyone ever displayed. Christianity’s not just a religion. It's a pure, sweet relationship with God. Because of Jesus, I am now a son of God. He is my dad, and you can be his child too. God loves you. Will you let him come?. . .. . .. . .

I get a minor kick out of the line, "he as bad as those preachers on the radio"
In the novel it's written that Arvin keeps his distance from religion, which was enabled by his grandmother and the previous reverend, on account of the trauma caused by his parents death in Knockemstiff. And yet here, despite the distance Arvin obviously keeps, he still has an attachment and an opinion on religion. Enough to know that the preachers on radio are less than quality and able to recognize a false preacher from a speech that sucked most everyone in.

Nah what this scene is is the reverend basically lying to the church about disliking the chicken livers (and the plate they came on), pitying Arvin and his family and implying to the church that the food is horrible and they shouldn't eat it. He's narcissistic so he's acting as though he's making a sacrifice for the church by eating this horrible food - in reality, he thinks they're delicious and is selfishly keeping the dish to himself.

In real life, there are people like Pattinson's character hiding among us. They are in a large numbers. Some of them get revealed, some are good hiders. But mind you, there are more people like them than we can imagine.

    • @paulallen8109
      @paulallen8109 3 роки тому

      Among religious clerics? Definitely.
      Among politicians? Arguably.
Among popular youtubers and online celebrities? "more people like them than we can imagine" indeed.
Here's the culprit for this. People tend to listen either to those who say things they like, no matter how obviously targeted that is, OR they listen to people who are brutally honest - because they wrongly believe that anybody honest is always telling the truth. People are much too emotional.
This explain why the kind of people you warn us about have their influence and followers in the first place. The *real* tragic part isn't them but the people who follow them and listen to them.
I'll tell you what. *Reason* is in short supply. Reason has never been a human trait. Reason is what we need to believe in. And we don't need others to follow if we have reason on our OWN.
