Holy s-hit, I used to make 24 an hour and was still homeless. When people say that "homelessness is not a personal failure, it's an institutional failure," this is what they mean.
go live in the forest preserve. matter of fact. let a 100,000 people move into a forest preserve. lets see how long it takes for the government to act.
my wife's coworker at chick-fil-a is making 12 an hour, she's not homeless, she just bought herself a house near work. 30 miles north of Charlotte NC. if you make 24 an hour still homeless, time to move to a place that does not demand that much for a living, also, vote your political party that controls the city out, if dems or republican running the city for 20+ year can not solve your housing issue, time to vote those guys out.
At age 54 I got layed off. Plant closed. I was a highly skilled employee. My hourly rate was $43.00 per hour. The same day I was let go I got a call. The president of another company offered me a job. $20.00 per hour. The plan for years was to retire at 55. He knew dam well that he was taking advantage of me. I didn't say a word. I had to stick with the plan. I spent exactly 1 year there to the day. Every dollar I made went into are retirement accounts. On my last day I didn't say a word. And walked out. I heard they tried to recruit different people from all over the country to replace me. I was very good at what I did. People from all over the country knew my work and that president knew it. I got the last laugh. After 39 years I was done.
43 per hour did you forget to save money. 20% housing means 9 dollars per hour should go to housing 9 per hour for housing that is 1375 bucks a month for housing but not good housing .crappy housing in texas is 1600 a month for 2 bedroom apt. its not the wages its the housing costs . if i made 43 per hour tho i would have saved 20k per year with a 89k yr salary .ive never made 89k a year but i still bought house .moneymanagement or go broke

WE DON'T NEED NEW HOMES, we need big money/companies to not be able to buy single-family homes. Honestly, there should be regulation over this, its just disgusting
It would not be any different. Supply and demand dictate price. There would be different players but the same outcome. Your only solution if you don't like it, is to buy your own.
@S Blijheid I respectfully disagree. If there were a limit on how many homes a person could own (idk like 5- that number can be debated on when relevant) and that corps/big money couldn't buy single family homes there would no longer be a supply shortage.
The issue isn't the wage there, its the fact that narcissistic NIMBYs have blocked all new housing development for decades through control over zoning. It doesn't matter what wages are if the houses simply don't exist.
@@emmetcosten9453you're right that lack of affordable housing is also used to hurt the working people. What I meant to say was that, whether it's caused by lack of affordable housing or people being underpaid, it's bonkers that we've been conned/coerced into accepting the idea that a person can work full time but still not have stable housing. Everyone working full time should have a place to live, either because housing is plentiful or because full time jobs pay enough to guarantee housing. It's late and I'm tired, hope this makes sense.
Isn't it weird that the more minimum wage increases the less affordable things become? It's almost like basic economic principles like supply and demand exist.

You had the chance to buy a home for a reasonable cost, go to college for very little. Imagine the people younger than you that never even had those benefits and still face the same hardships.
You could contact the Federal Department of Labor and Wage. Your employer is literally doing something illegal in not paying you time+ half after 40hrs I think. Also, retaliation for reporting them is also illegal. A job I had years ago was cracked down on. Hope this helps.
Then the rich residents should be prepared to do all the low wage jobs themselves. It's an outrage. Anyone who works a reasonable amount (35+ hrs) at an honest job should be able to have healthcare, vacations, raise your children in peace and safety, and certainly have a decent home.
It's the same here in Florida too. Anything less than $25/hr you just can't afford rent anywhere. Yet the minimum wage in this state is still set at $11/hr. Wages/cost of rent are a joke anymore. I'm ready for people to start rioting in the streets.
Americans riot for many issues, but now when corporations are changing housing laws and many working class families going homeless, we as a people don't even have demonstrations at the local city hall. What's that about? Fix up existing buildings and folks will have affordable housing.

I noticed that two things seem to be driving the housing problem in a lot of towns. First, you have quiant small towns that become holiday spots for the rich, and they gobble up all the houses. Then the people with the low-paid jobs (or the municipal employees) can't afford a place. Then you have the stupid building codes. My father wanted to buy an old wreck next door, and build a large three-storey home, with an apartment that could be rented out, but the town said no. They didn't want houses with apartments. It would make the block look low-class. The result? A huge house was built next door, nobody could afford the price, it sat empty for years, until the town had to seize it for taxes and auction it off.
In rural Tennessee, you could purchase a nice home for around 50 grand prior to the swarm of UAW retirees that flooded the area. I pay 200 dollars a month for rent and utilities in the Philippines for an air conditioned brand new apartment, and my health care is cheap and outstanding. I love my country. But enough is enough.
The problem is not that people are not working or not making enough money working full time, the problem is that local state politicians, allowing real estate developers to get away with renovating older buildings, converting them into Condominiums, building new luxury apartment, and big houses leaving out the working class not to be able to afford ridiculous high rets and mortgages. Thev only folks that can are the wealthy. I remember back when working regular folks, could live in San Francisco and Los Angeles in the 70s 80s and 90s, folks with regular incomes still have money to save and cover life basic necessaries, without worrying every day we're going to have enough to cover rent.
Rents were affordable not so long ago. But over past 20 some years it's gone completely off the rails. You can't even rent an apartment in some little town in West Virginia in the middle of nowhere where you're lucky to find a job at a gas station for minimum wage without the rent being $800 a month. It didn't used to be that way.
Maybe but wealthy people also want to have top class services and are ready to pay for quality. They need people to take care of their homes, children, health, appearance...they want to be entertained, eat top quality meals and have activities. If they want that, if they pay good money for it, even a hairdresser, a nanny or a plumber will be able to afford living there even in good apartments. Maybe those wealthy people will stand up and ask municipality to attract those qualified high end workers to get what they need. They cannot just hide in their villas alone the whole time. if everything is brought up, it can become a new balance at a higher level. I see it often here in Sweden that many foreigners when they arrive complaining about services that are super expensive. But on the other hand, everyone makes a good living and you do not see people complaining about their work, even if it is not a very qualified type of job, because all jobs pay well at the end.

I make $25 an hour. I still can't move out of my parents house, not because rentals still get snatched as soon as they're available, but I don't even qualify for the 3x income requirement for these rentals as I can't even find a studio for under $2,000 a month, let alone anything else.
@@The2ndFirst Yeah it isn't 1985 anymore............lmao. That was 40 years ago. Prices for everything are 10x higher now in case you didn't notice and minimum wage in many states is still $7.25 which is only double what you made back then.

That's the thing. There are so many affordable places in this country. People don't want to move. And it can be hard to relocate, because you first need the money to move which is hard if you're already struggling. And with remote work being so common now, you can literally live anywhere there's internet. I live in rural Georgia but my job is in Maryland. My last rent was $450 for a 3 bedroom, but my husband and I bought a house last year. Our neighbors are transplants from Miami who couldn't believe how cheap it was. Then again, if everybody started moving here, the cost of living would obviously go up.
lot of people are move ing out off c a to tx mostly because of tax and cost of liveing . in austin last 10 years population increased and rents gone up
This is happening everywhere. You can't create these bastions of wealth while expecting to have low income workers waiting on you. If you're not willing to pay restaurant workers and laborers and other service workers enough to have a decent existence, then you can do everything yourself.
But you can't expect basically uneducated, unskilled staff to make big money. If you try to pay resturant workers and laborers a big income, you wsill have to pay way more for service. I'm not paying $30 bucks for a McDonalds burger so they can get paid more...
It is not an issue of affordability, but an issue of insufficient wages. We need to be working to get a living wage. The money is out there; they just don't want to share it with us.
This is also happening in Martha's Vineyard. I visited with my friends who have lived and worked on the island for generations but because the rich people are moving in and messing with the prices of housing, 3 of my friends live together in a 2 bedroom duplex and another is renting out a barn to live in with no heat or running water for $800 a month. They all work but don't want to leave because that is their home. Eventually I do think they will be forced to leave and then there will be no workers.

A perfect storm is brewing in the United States. Inflation, bank collapse, severe drought in the agricultural belt, recession, food shortages, diesel fuel and heating oil shortages, baby formula shortages, available automobile shortages and prices, the price of living place. It's all coming together and it could lead to a real disaster towards the end of this year (or sooner). With inflation currently at about 6%, my primary concern is how to maximize my savings/retirement fund of about $300k which has been sitting duck since forever with zero to no gains.

I am a social worker and work in homeless services in Los Angeles. This video is a perfect example of the main cause behind the homelessness crisis we're experiencing.
I travel for a living, trucker, oil field hand, pilot/escort. I stay at a lot of truck stops and the like. In the last few years I've seen more and more 40-70 hour a week people living in their vehicles and using the amenities to prepare for their work day. I've personally been living this way for a very long time because I cannot afford to pay for a home I never see.
I’m also a trucker. Had a 720 credit score before I got Covid then a blood clot 2 years ago. Missed work for 4 months and depleted my savings. Had to take out a loan to catch up and pay for the next few months of getting on my feet. As soon as I take that loan out the landlord decided let’s just raise the rent by $250. Then they raised it another $250 again this year. I can’t pay my loans and credit score is in the 500’s now because of this situation. No apartments will rent to me, so now my only option is to live in my work truck after next month. Used to be if you made enough to pay rent that’s all they cared about, but now it’s all about the credit score no matter what the situation is. The system has been rigged to hurt the hard working people in this country.

@@FREE_WILL_AAHhhhhhhhhhhhh I agree, but the practicalities of this place make that essentially impossible for most employers. Eastern Washington is a bit different. You have lots of open space. Here where 60% of the land is in the national park and the rest is either developed or in conservation easements there is very little land available to build housing. Furthermore, what land that could be built on is VERY expensive. And yes, I am very familiar with eastern Washington, having grown up in Washington. Also most of the businesses here are seasonal and don't generate enough cash flow during the 5-6 month season when they are open to build employee housing even if they could get a permit. There is a lot of NIMBYism here. NIMBY is not a problem on a four section whet farm.
It’s interesting how society quickly judges and assumes that homelessness is equal to lazy people who do not work or contribute anything to society but that is far from the truth. I live in Hawaii where wages are lower but the cost of living is too high. We have a lot of homeless people and many are actually classified as the working homeless. The remaining who are not homeless still live with their parents way passed their 30s even though they already have children of their own. I studied finance and one of the down sides of capitalism is inequality. Inequality can work to encourage people to work smarter but when it reaches to levels where even buying the essential goods and services to survive is unattainable then it’s a huge problem. There are many well off people who don’t work at all, I can speak for my parents who are landlords and just collect rent on property they inherited so they don’t have jobs to collect a pay check since the money they make is sufficient so we can’t use the excuse that the rich worked hard.
I just saw some woman from Philadelphia ported to Hawaii and got to skip the housing waiting list. She got a beautiful apartment with a view that the state of Hawaii is paying for. 2k a month. She doesn't have to pay for anything. Honestly the only way to get by is to be rich or be a leech on the government.
Believe me being poor in America is better than in INDONESIA, in America it is still easy to get a job whereas in Indonesia it is limited by age and gender and wages are low. Those of you who live in America are still too lucky, even though you are poor, you can still afford a car. It's really amazing 💓🇺🇸
Disappointed but not surprised. Politicians and businesses need to figure it because this is ridiculous. People working full time jobs should not struggle with housing.
The true face of the ultra-rich has been revealed. They will actually pay lawyers to sue the elected government from building homes for people to live in. Because heaven forbid, we don't have homeless. I guess it's better to just have them live in tents, until you can't stand them anymore? Then you push them out, and hire them when they're desperate for even less money. Then you have even more power and control over them. And at the same time, blame the victim.
Politicians can’t bite the hands that feed them. We let corporations take over politics by buying the kook aid on faux “news” channels and hate commentary for 2 decades.
I think you are not understanding anything. The politicians already knew about the problem and they are actually doing this on purpose to control the populous.
All that money and no philanthropy??? You see rich people don't want to be bothered with poor people. They don't want to hear or see them. They don't want to know about them. They pay their taxes so as far as they are concerned they are doing their part.
Doubt if they pay their taxes. An that's a major issue with the ultra wealthy and companies who don't actually pay their fare share. They do everything they can to keep every penny. Meanwhile I'm being harassed by the Uncle Sam for 500$ dollars. They need it so bad to send to Ukraine or buy more weapons. Schmucks 😎🎭✌️
They actually do everything they can to not pay taxes. If you look into the philanthropy also, many of them funnel money into charities they control, allows them to pay no taxes on that money and there is no regulation for when or how that money must be spent. So they can just donate 10mil to their own charity and do nothing if they want.
This is also what its like living/working in California. Its sickening that even $20 an hour can't get you a tiny no nothing shack. Something has to give.

Well, it mentioned a lot of the mansions have live-in cooks, nannies, landscapers, and yoga instructors. I would assume the issue is for people working in the retail and restaurant industries among other middle class jobs (i.e. utilities). The town needs to work on having housing available for that demographic. For example, the guy at the shelter/dorm is paying around $450 a month to live there and at $20/hr, he could definitely afford a $600-800 a month apartment. He could probably even manage $1000/month if he was stretching himself a little thin.
@@KatieBellino The problem is there are no apartments for $600-$1000 a month. They cost much more than that. No one will build units that will go for that little because it isn't profitable enough.

At some point last year I was working two jobs at that rate and got burned out. Almost every person I met at those jobs was working 2 jobs unless they were married and had support from their partner
It's because the "trickle down" Nimby mentality is all over the country. They concocted this whole fake draconian "single 'family' 'zoning'" nonsense to artificially prop up their almighty "home values" at any cost to society. That's main reason why rents have skyrocketed everywhere.

The biggest problem is not a big enough diversification of housing units to support the mixed range of salaries. When developers insist on only building "luxury" apartments they eliminate a good majority of people. I'd love to see studio units (clean, comfortable and modern) like they build in Asia. Not everyone wants or needs big living spaces and most don't use the "luxury" amenities that cost exuberant price hikes.

The result? Phoenix was unofficially "The most affordable city in the west" in the 2000's. I believe they may have been forced to relinquish that distinction in the 2020's. This is crazy. But it is everywhere. Not just Jackson Hole. It is too hard for lower middle class workers to find housing in ALL places across the USA. I had to move to the Philippines to retire.
You're absolutely right
Rents were affordable not so long ago.

Be your own boss and your opportunities are endless.
ITS not about capitalism.... go to a socialist countrie and see how people live there.....
I hate this modern world. I want to leave
@@javiermp6608 Jackson Hole is ultra liberal in a state that's mostly conservative. This is because all the ultra liberals from Hollywood moved there. Just like Colorado was ruined by Californians. Liberals and their pseudosocialism are ruining this country.
What does capitalism have to do with this? Using government power to artificially dampen the supply of housing is the opposite of capitalism. Nitwits.
It's simple: Stopping working in Jackson Hole eventually the rich people will get tired of cleaning their own toilets and figure out a way to make room for the working class.
Such a good point! I wonder if there is state legislation to say that you have to build a certain percentage of housing in the high, medium and low price range. Sure enough what I see is that most of the things being built now , including rentals are out of reach for many people.
@@adultpubertypodcast78 part of the reason why so much of this housing remains empty is because these homes are not necessarily meant to be lived in, they're just a way for investors to store their money.

My mom always complains that I live with her… talking about when I was your age I was out of the house…
Well, rent was $400 back then. Those same APts are now 1900 for a one bedroom.

How hard is it to throw up one or two apartment buildings and keep them cheap? They can but they don't.
Because they don't care
It is difficult because many people tear it up, refuse to pay rent, etc. You have to pay taxes, maintenance fees, upkeep, insurance, etc.

There is no housing shortage. The problem is hedge funds being allowed to buy all the housing they want and charge a fortune for rent

Great video. This situation is why I live out my van. Either you live in an area where the minimum is $15.50 (like here in CA) and rent is $815 a month (for just a room in a house) or you live somewhere where rent is less, but the minimum wage is $7.50. Why is the Federal minimum wage still $7.50 in 2023? We really need to look hard at that
The dollar amount doesn’t matter it’s what that 7.50 can buy you. I think there should be NO minimum wage because it just causes artificial inflation.
@@user-ni4bc2bm7c I used to think that but not anymore. We NEED to raise the minimum wage
@@TheAmericanCatholic explain why? I have evidence… money in Zimbabwe you can be paid a crap ton of “dollars” there and still be poor as hell. What we should be saying is we need to raise the standard of living. If you were paid 1 dollar but could buy a Ferrari with it we wouldn’t be saying that. We need to fix things in our monetary system NOT just give hard working people worthless dollars.
Same in Ontario, Canada. Minimum wage is now $15.50 but to rent even a room is over $800. If you want an actual 1 bedroom apartment it’s $2400 a month tough when my take home pay is under $2000 after deductions. It’s really sad even 20 years ago a 1 bedroom was $600 and 2 bedroom $750 and then minimum wage was 11.25 the rent has gone up way faster than the wage. My city has 120k population and at last count there were over 1000 homeless people.
The minimum wage is attended for the young to get experience working and most still live at home, minimum wage jobs were never attended to make a career out of.
When you’re rich you don’t you just want to see poor people suffer .. if you think my statement is false then why is the rents so damn high ..
If I was rich I'd help out folks who need money

I'm in tears. I have been complaining about this very old doublewide with single pane windows and very little insulation. The electricity in one bedroom has gone out and the central heat/ac doesn't work. I have been bitter because we can't afford to move anywhere else. I need to be grateful that I still have a roof over my head and can still afford to eat. Although, the price of food is getting to the point where I almost can't it.
